Use two separate controls in an AI Max Search campaign: query exclusions to address unwanted searches, and campaign-level URL exclusions to stop specified pages from serving as landing pages. Find the problem in the relevant report first, apply the matching control, then check search-term and landing-page reporting again. A URL exclusion does not block a search query.
The distinction matters because AI Max can influence both which searches match and which page an ad sends visitors to. Diagnose those outcomes separately before changing settings. Google Ads Help describes the controls and their dependencies in its AI Max overview, setup guide, and AI Max FAQ.

Choose the control that matches the problem
AI Max is an optimization layer for Search campaigns, with controls for search-term matching, text customization, Final URL expansion, brand settings, and URL inclusions and exclusions. Those controls affect different parts of how a campaign finds traffic and chooses a landing page; one exclusion should not be treated as a substitute for another. Google outlines these features in its AI Max for Search campaigns overview.

Google’s guidance says URL exclusions “Exclude specific URLs from serving as landing pages in your campaign.” They are page controls, not query exclusions. Conversely, excluding a query does not, by itself, tell AI Max which page to use for other searches.

A useful first question is: Was the search itself unsuitable, or was the destination unsuitable? If the search is irrelevant, investigate a query exclusion. If the search could still be valuable but the selected page is wrong, investigate a URL exclusion. If both are true, they are separate issues and may call for both controls. This diagnosis prevents a common overcorrection: blocking a potentially useful search just because a particular page was a poor destination.
Keep the scope of each control in mind. Query controls address the searches that can trigger the campaign; URL exclusions address which specified destinations may serve as landing pages. An exclusion in one category should not be expected to change the other category. The reports are therefore not interchangeable either: search-term reporting helps identify query problems, while landing-page reporting helps identify destination problems.
Before changing settings, confirm the campaign configuration
- Confirm the campaign type. These instructions concern a Search campaign using AI Max, not Performance Max. Performance Max has its own documentation and controls; do not transfer its URL-exclusion directions to Search campaigns.
- Check which AI Max features are enabled. Review the campaign’s AI Max settings before deciding what to change. Google’s setup instructions describe the setup and bulk-editing routes. Google currently says AI Max is selected by default for new Search campaigns, but check the actual campaign rather than assuming the default applies to every account or campaign.
- Note any dependencies that matter. Final URL expansion requires text customization to be enabled, so the ad copy can match the selected landing page. If the campaign uses a tracking template, check that it works with a dynamically selected landing page before enabling Final URL expansion.
Do this check even if the campaign has been running for a while. The settings determine what kind of automation is active, and Google’s setup interface and defaults can change. Treat the current campaign configuration—not a remembered setup screen or a default you saw elsewhere—as the starting point. If managing multiple campaigns, use the setup guide’s described bulk-editing route where appropriate, then verify the settings on the campaigns that matter.
This is also a useful point to decide whether the campaign needs automated destination selection at all. Final URL expansion is relevant when AI Max can select pages, and its dependency on text customization means that changing it is not an isolated landing-page decision. Review enabled features together, but do not assume that turning off one feature automatically turns off all AI Max features.
Exclude irrelevant search terms
Start with the search terms report, not a guess about what the campaign might be matching. Identify the specific searches that are irrelevant to the offer, audience, or campaign goal, then use the query-exclusion controls available in the account to address them. Google’s AI Max overview covers search-term matching and reporting, but exact negative-keyword syntax, matching behavior, and menu labels are not established as universal across account configurations. Check the controls and their current explanations in your account instead of assuming one click path or match behavior applies everywhere.
- Open search-term reporting for the Search campaign and inspect the queries that generated traffic.
- Decide which observed searches are genuinely unsuitable. Keep the decision tied to the problem you can see in the report; do not exclude broad themes merely because one query performed poorly.
- Add the unwanted queries using the account’s available query-exclusion controls. Review the match options shown in the interface before saving, since the precise behavior depends on the option you select.
- After the change has had time to affect reporting, review search terms again. Check whether the unwanted searches have stopped appearing and whether relevant traffic remains.
This process is intentionally query-first: AI Max can match searches, but an advertiser should base exclusions on reported queries and their campaign relevance. If the problem is that a suitable search is reaching the wrong page, use the landing-page controls as well; excluding the search would address a different issue.
Make the exclusion decision from the query, not a hunch
For each candidate search, ask whether it is clearly outside the campaign’s offer or audience, or whether it is merely unfamiliar. An unfamiliar query is not automatically irrelevant. Review the wording in the report and compare its apparent intent with the campaign goal before excluding it. If a query is relevant but the ad experience or destination is unsuitable, solve that part of the experience rather than treating the query as the cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Where the account presents match options, read their current explanations before selecting one. Google’s official overview confirms AI Max search-term matching and reporting, but it does not establish one universal negative-keyword syntax or match behavior for every configuration. Avoid copying a rule from another account without checking what the current interface says it will do. The key operational safeguard is to base the exclusion on an observed query and understand the option being applied.

Also preserve the context of the change. A short note recording the observed query, the reason it was judged unsuitable, the control changed, and the reporting check to follow can make later reviews more useful. This is a management practice, not a special AI Max requirement: it helps distinguish a deliberate query exclusion from an unrelated adjustment when campaign behavior changes.
Exclude unsuitable landing pages
When a page should not receive paid traffic, add that specific URL or an appropriate URL rule as a campaign URL exclusion. Google documents URL exclusions as campaign-level controls for preventing those URLs from serving as landing pages. This lets the campaign retain query coverage while restricting where eligible traffic may land.
- List the pages that are unsuitable for ad traffic, such as pages that do not match the campaign’s offer or destination requirements.
- In the AI Max settings for the Search campaign, add the relevant page URLs or URL rules to URL exclusions. Use the current account interface to confirm how it interprets each rule before saving.
- Review landing-page reporting after the change. Look at the pages AI Max selected and the “Selected by” field, which provides context about page selection.
- If a disallowed page still appears, verify that the URL rule corresponds to the actual reported URL and that you changed the intended Search campaign. Adjust the exclusion to fit the page URL pattern shown in reporting.
URL exclusions are useful when the page is the problem but the search itself may still be valuable. They do not guarantee a particular replacement page for every query; use landing-page reporting to see what AI Max selected after the exclusion.
Check the actual selected destination
When a destination looks wrong, use the landing-page report to identify the page AI Max selected and inspect the “Selected by” field. This gives context for the selection; it does not replace checking the URL itself. Compare the reported URL with the page or URL rule you meant to exclude. If the displayed URL differs from the one you expected, refine the rule based on the URL shown rather than assuming a broad exclusion has the effect you intended.
Consider whether the exclusion should cover one specific page or a broader URL pattern. A narrow rule is appropriate when only one destination is unsuitable; a broader rule may be appropriate when multiple unwanted pages follow a relevant pattern. The interface’s current explanation of how a URL rule is interpreted is the place to verify its scope. Do not assume a rule matches more or less than it actually does.
Finally, remember that preventing a page from serving does not promise that AI Max will choose a particular substitute. The campaign may still be eligible for the search, while the destination selection changes. Review the landing-page report after applying the exclusion to verify the resulting pages, and make another targeted adjustment only if the reported outcome still conflicts with the campaign’s requirements.
Balance automated reach with page control
AI Max combines several features that can broaden matching or help choose a destination. The right configuration depends on whether the campaign needs wider automated reach, tighter destination control, or a specific asset-pinning behavior. Change only the setting that addresses the observed problem; disabling one AI Max feature does not necessarily disable the others.
| Need | Practical approach | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent a particular search from triggering the campaign | Use query-exclusion controls based on search-term reporting. | Review the match behavior available for the exclusion; do not assume syntax or matching is identical in every account. |
| Keep traffic away from certain pages while retaining useful queries | Add campaign URL exclusions for those pages or URL patterns. | Review landing-page reporting to understand which destinations are selected after the change. |
| Allow Final URL expansion to select relevant pages | Keep text customization enabled as required for Final URL expansion. | Check generated ad copy for accuracy and confirm existing tracking templates work with dynamic landing pages. |
| Preserve pinned responsive search ad assets | Do not use Final URL expansion or URL inclusions if pinning is essential. | Google says pinned assets are not respected when Final URL expansion and text customization are enabled together, and also are not respected when URL inclusions are provided. See its AI Max FAQ. |
Text customization can generate assets, so check that generated copy accurately describes the business and destination. Google’s text customization guidance advises monitoring generated assets for accuracy.

Think of the configuration choice as a balance rather than a single on/off decision. Broader automation can allow AI Max to match searches and, where Final URL expansion is active, select landing pages. Tighter page control can be achieved with URL exclusions while retaining useful query coverage. Query exclusions are the appropriate response when the query itself should not trigger the campaign. These are distinct choices, and the campaign can require a different combination depending on the observed issue.
Pinned responsive search ad assets are a separate constraint to check before enabling destination features. Google’s FAQ states that pinned assets are not respected when Final URL expansion and text customization are enabled together, and are also not respected when URL inclusions are provided. If pinning is essential, the FAQ advises not using Final URL expansion or URL inclusions. This is a specific caveat; it should not be generalized into a claim that all AI Max settings ignore pinning in every configuration.
Use a repeatable monitoring loop
Neither exclusion type should be treated as a one-time substitute for reviewing campaign behavior. Use the reports to connect what happened to the control that can address it.
Recommended Free Tools
- Review search terms. Find new irrelevant queries or confirm whether earlier query exclusions are addressing the observed problem.
- Review landing pages. Check which pages AI Max selected and use the “Selected by” field for context. Add or refine a URL exclusion when an unsuitable page is still eligible.
- Inspect match and source information. AI Max reporting includes match/source context that can help explain how traffic was matched.
- Check the ad experience. When text customization is on, verify that generated assets remain accurate for the business and the pages receiving traffic.
- Make one targeted adjustment at a time. Separating query changes from page changes makes it easier to tell which control addressed the issue.
Use the same distinction each time you review performance: a query question belongs in search-term reporting; a destination question belongs in landing-page reporting. If both reports point to separate problems, keep the remedies separate and check both outcomes afterward. AI Max reporting includes match/source information and a landing-page “Selected by” field, so use those details to understand what matched and which destination was selected rather than relying on a single summary metric.
There is no fixed review interval established here. Recheck after a change has had time to affect the campaign’s reporting, then continue to monitor for new queries or selected pages that do not fit the campaign. The useful endpoint is not simply that an exclusion was saved; it is that the report shows whether the unwanted query or destination continues to appear and whether relevant traffic remains eligible.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a URL exclusion to solve a query problem: URL exclusions block specified landing pages, not search terms.
- Excluding queries when the destination is the real issue: keep a valuable search eligible and exclude the unsuitable page if that is the campaign problem.
- Assuming a universal menu path or negative-keyword match rule: use the controls and explanations displayed in the account, since exact labels and matching details are not established as universal.
- Applying Performance Max instructions to AI Max for Search: these are different campaign types.
- Enabling dynamic destinations without checking tracking: test compatibility between an existing tracking template and dynamic landing pages before enabling Final URL expansion.
- Assuming pinned assets will remain honored: account for Google’s stated limitations when Final URL expansion, text customization, or URL inclusions are used.
Another avoidable mistake is making several unrelated changes at once. If a query exclusion, URL exclusion, and feature toggle all change together, the next report may not make it clear which adjustment affected the outcome. Apply a focused change where practical, record what issue it addresses, and inspect the matching report. This makes the campaign easier to troubleshoot without assuming that a single setting controls every part of AI Max behavior.

Does a URL exclusion stop an irrelevant search term?
No. A URL exclusion prevents specified URLs from serving as landing pages in the campaign. It does not block a search query. To address an irrelevant search, identify it in search-term reporting and use the query-exclusion controls available in the account.

Yes. That is the purpose of separating the controls. If the query may still be valuable but a particular destination is unsuitable, add a campaign URL exclusion for that page or appropriate URL rule, then review landing-page reporting to see which page AI Max selects afterward. An exclusion does not guarantee a particular replacement destination.

Are AI Max URL exclusions campaign-level?
Google documents URL exclusions for AI Max as campaign-level controls. Apply the exclusion to the intended Search campaign, then verify the affected pages in that campaign’s landing-page reporting. Do not assume a change in one campaign automatically applies to another.
Where should I start if a query is irrelevant?
Start with the Search campaign’s search-term report and identify the actual query. Then use the query-exclusion controls available in the account, reviewing the match options and their explanations before saving. Google’s official AI Max overview confirms search-term matching and reporting, but exact negative-keyword syntax, matching behavior, and menu labels should not be treated as universal.
Does Final URL expansion require text customization?
Yes. Google states that Final URL expansion requires text customization to be enabled so ad copy can match the selected landing page. If you enable dynamic landing-page selection, check generated assets for accuracy and verify that an existing tracking template works with dynamic landing pages.

Will pinned responsive search ad assets always be used?
No. Google’s AI Max FAQ says pinned assets are not respected when Final URL expansion and text customization are enabled together, and also are not respected when URL inclusions are provided. If pinning is essential, the FAQ advises not using Final URL expansion or URL inclusions.
Does turning off one AI Max feature disable all AI Max features?
Do not assume so. AI Max settings include separate features and dependencies. Check the campaign’s actual configuration and change the setting connected to the problem you observed. Final URL expansion’s relationship with text customization is a documented dependency; it does not mean every other AI Max control is automatically disabled.
Can I use Performance Max URL-exclusion instructions for AI Max Search?
No. These are different campaign types. Use Google’s AI Max for Search campaign documentation and the controls in the Search campaign rather than transferring directions specific to Performance Max.
Bottom line
Use search-term reporting and query-exclusion controls for irrelevant searches; use campaign-level URL exclusions for unsuitable landing pages. Check the campaign’s AI Max configuration, respect the documented relationships between Final URL expansion, text customization, tracking templates, and pinned assets, then confirm the result in both search-term and landing-page reporting. Match the control to the problem, and keep query eligibility separate from destination choice.
