How to Evaluate Whether an AI Peer-Review System Catches Errors in Research Claims

Evaluate an AI peer-review system with a held-out, independently labeled test set that contains both explicit errors and missing information. Report recall, precision, false alarms, claim-and-evidence localization, and severity separately; compare results with expert reviewers; quantify uncertainty; and preserve every model, prompt, retrieval, and scoring condition. A single benchmark percentage cannot establish that a system is safe for real peer review.

What a credible evaluation must prove

An AI reviewer can fail in several different ways. It may overlook a false statement, flag a valid result, identify the wrong sentence, cite evidence that does not support its criticism, or invent a criticism that sounds plausible. An evaluation is useful only when it distinguishes these outcomes and tests the kinds of manuscripts and consequences that matter to your workflow.

  • Detection: Did the system identify a consequential problem?
  • Classification: Did it correctly describe the problem as a factual, methodological, statistical, disclosure, or other error?
  • Localization: Did it point to the affected claim, passage, table, code, or reference?
  • Evidence quality: Does the cited source, calculation, or manuscript passage actually support the criticism?
  • Specificity: How often does it criticize valid content or produce hallucinated faults?
  • Generalization: Will performance hold for comparable papers outside the test set?

Set the intended use before selecting metrics. A screening tool that routes suspicious claims to a human can tolerate more false alarms than an automated accept-or-reject gate. A system used in a high-stakes medical or policy review may require much higher recall for a narrow class of errors than a tool used for preliminary editing.

Step 1: Define the use case and error taxonomy

Specify what the system is allowed to judge

Write a scope statement covering disciplines, manuscript types, languages, evidence sources, and review stages. State whether the system checks only factual support or also methods, numerical consistency, statistical inference, omitted disclosures, citation accuracy, code, and reproducibility. A model cannot be fairly scored on a category it was never asked to inspect.

Separate explicit errors from omissions

An explicit contradiction gives the reviewer something visible to challenge: a reported sample size conflicts with the methods, a confidence interval does not match the displayed estimate, or a conclusion reverses the direction of a result. An omission is different: a required control, limitation, disclosure, or data source is absent. Omission detection is often harder because the missing item is not present in the text.

Use a taxonomy that records at least:

  • Factual or evidentiary contradiction
  • Methodological design or implementation problem
  • Numerical, statistical, or logical inconsistency
  • Unsupported interpretation or overclaim
  • Missing disclosure, limitation, control, or evidence
  • Reference or quotation mismatch
  • Code, data, or reproducibility failure

Assign each case a severity level. For example, a mistake that reverses a primary conclusion is not equivalent to a mislabeled appendix variable. Severity labels should be adjudicated independently and documented before scoring.

Step 2: Build a ground-truth test set

Combine real papers with controlled cases

Use original papers, authentic reviews, and carefully controlled error cases. For a planted-error case, preserve the unmodified manuscript, insert one or more known problems without changing unrelated prose, and record the exact affected claim and supporting evidence. Include valid claims and legitimate criticism as negative controls. Without these controls, a system can appear accurate simply by flagging everything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use independent adjudication

At least two qualified adjudicators should label each case without seeing the system’s output. Resolve disagreements through a predefined procedure, retaining the original labels, disagreement notes, final decision, error category, severity, affected span, and evidence location. Do not use the model’s confidence, explanation, or self-rating as ground truth.

Protect the evaluation set

Create a development set for prompt and system tuning and a separate held-out set for the final report. Public planted-error collections can leak into later training data. The Dawes Institute’s 2026 AI Peer Review Benchmark warns that its released ground truth may contaminate models trained after its August 2026 release. Rotate private cases or keep a protected set when possible, and disclose whether a model could have encountered the benchmark.

Record the unit of analysis

Decide whether a test item is a claim, a paragraph, a paper, or a complete review. A paper containing five errors can otherwise give disproportionate weight to one manuscript. Store a stable identifier for the paper and each claim so that scores can be stratified by both item and document.

Step 3: Design labels that support meaningful scoring

For every claim-level item, capture the following fields before running the system:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Field Purpose
Claim text and location Defines exactly what must be checked.
Gold status Valid, explicit error, omission, or uncertain.
Error category Enables category-specific results rather than one aggregate.
Severity Allows consequential errors to receive appropriate weight.
Evidence source Identifies the table, method, dataset, citation, code, or external source needed to verify the label.
Required localization Defines how precisely a system must identify the affected claim or evidence.
Adjudication record Shows who labeled the case, when, and how disagreements were resolved.

Mark genuinely indeterminate cases separately. Forcing an uncertain claim into “correct” or “incorrect” can make a system look better or worse for reasons unrelated to its ability.

Step 4: Run systems under controlled conditions

Comparisons are meaningful only when systems receive equivalent information and operating conditions. Freeze the manuscript version and provide the same references, tables, supplementary files, code, and retrieval permissions. If one system can browse sources while another receives only the manuscript, report the difference instead of presenting the scores as a head-to-head capability ranking.

  1. Record the model name, version or snapshot, provider, and access date.
  2. Freeze the system prompt, reviewer instructions, output schema, temperature or equivalent inference settings, token limits, and retry policy.
  3. Record retrieval indexes, search limits, source allowlists, tool calls, and whether the model can execute code or calculations.
  4. Run each item the planned number of times. If the system is stochastic, preserve every output rather than retaining only the most favorable run.
  5. Blind human adjudicators to system identity when they score explanations, localization, and evidence quality.
  6. Store raw outputs, parsed findings, timestamps, errors, timeouts, and costs or latency if operational burden is part of the decision.

Use a reference panel of expert reviewers or adjudicators under a comparable protocol. Human performance is not a perfect truth standard, but it reveals whether an apparent model advantage depends on an unrealistically easy or narrow test.

Step 5: Score each outcome separately

Recall for consequential errors

Recall is the proportion of known errors that the system catches: recall = true positives / (true positives + false negatives). Report recall separately for explicit contradictions, omissions, statistical problems, and each severity level. A high overall recall can conceal failure on the errors that matter most.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Precision and false-alarm burden

Precision is the proportion of flagged issues that are real: precision = true positives / (true positives + false positives). Also report the false-positive rate on valid claims and the average number of unsupported or irrelevant criticisms per paper. Editors need to know how much human time the system consumes correcting its alarms.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Localization and evidence support

Score whether the output identifies the correct claim, the relevant passage or artifact, and a sound reason. A finding that says “the statistics are wrong” without identifying the calculation is not equivalent to a finding that pinpoints the affected table and reproduces the inconsistency. Use predefined partial-credit rules if a system finds the right paper but the wrong claim.

Severity-weighted results

Publish unweighted category results and a separately labeled severity-weighted analysis. State the weighting scheme before looking at outcomes. Do not hide missed high-impact errors behind many low-impact catches.

Stability across runs

For nondeterministic systems, report run-to-run variation, not just the best run. A reviewer that catches an error only intermittently may require repeated execution or human confirmation, which changes its practical cost and risk.

What existing benchmarks show—and what they do not

Benchmark or project Scale and design Finding relevant to evaluation Interpretation limit
AI Peer Review Benchmark, Dawes Institute (2026) 100 deliberately inserted methodological and statistical errors in 10 open-access psychology papers. The best single tested configuration caught 71 of 100; the union of 14 configurations caught 93 of 100. All seven errors missed by every configuration were omissions. Project-specific results from a limited domain and setup, not a universal performance estimate. Public ground truth may have entered later training data.
PROBE, Zhang et al., Findings of ACL (2026) 12,000 test cases across summarization, question answering, and style transfer. Separates claim decomposition, evidence finding, evidence evaluation, and hallucination localization; evidence finding is reported as a central weakness. Adjacent hallucination-detection evidence, not a direct test of every peer-review system.
HalluPeer, Lin et al. (preprint, September 3, 2026) 12,000 papers and 38,000 reviews, including human reviews aligned with hallucination-injected reviews. Measures detection, classification, and localization and reports that current detectors struggle to distinguish hallucinated criticism from legitimate critique. Preprint findings may change and should not be treated as settled consensus.
NIST AI 800-3, Keller et al. (2026) Study of 22 API-access frontier language models on three popular benchmarks. Distinguishes fixed-benchmark accuracy from generalized accuracy and discusses generalized linear mixed models, variance decomposition, and item difficulty. Provides evaluation methodology and statistical framing rather than a peer-review pass threshold.
SCORE, Center for Open Science (outcomes reported in 2026) 3,900 claims, 865 collaborators, and nine outcome papers. Treats reproducibility, robustness, and replicability as different dimensions that were only modestly correlated. Claim credibility cannot be reduced to an error-spotting score.
Science One / Chain-of-Evidence, Google Research (July 30, 2026) Experimental audit framework checking reported scores against reruns, code against specifications, and references. States that every claim should carry a recorded evidence chain for completeness and that each chain must genuinely support its claim for correctness. Describes an experimental prototype, not an independent system comparison.

The Dawes results illustrate why configuration and error type must accompany a number. A union of several configurations is not the same as one deployable system, and seven universally missed omissions still represent a serious blind spot even when the union catches 93 errors. Scores for later models may also be affected by exposure to the public cases.

Separate benchmark accuracy from generalization

A fixed test set answers: “How did this system perform on these items?” It does not automatically answer: “How will it perform on similar papers we have not seen?” NIST AI 800-3 explicitly distinguishes benchmark accuracy from generalized accuracy on potential items similar to those in the benchmark.

Estimate generalization with a design that matches your data. When claims are nested within papers, treat the paper—not each claim—as a clustering factor. Generalized linear mixed models can estimate average performance while accounting for paper-level variation, item difficulty, and uncertainty. Report confidence or credible intervals and the number of papers contributing to each estimate. Do not calculate intervals by pretending that thousands of claims from the same paper are independent.

Test authentic review contexts and hallucinated criticism

Planted errors provide clean labels, but real reviews contain ambiguity, partial evidence, and legitimate disagreement. Include authentic papers and reviews where possible. Ask adjudicators to distinguish a hallucinated criticism—a claim that the paper has a problem when it does not—from a valid critique of a real limitation or interpretive choice.

HalluPeer’s 2026 preprint highlights this separation as difficult for current detectors. Your protocol should therefore score not only whether a system flags a sentence, but whether its reason is defensible and whether the cited evidence supports it. If experts disagree legitimately, preserve that disagreement and report agreement rates rather than labeling every difference as a model error.

Audit evidence chains, not just verdicts

A useful output connects each criticism to the claim it concerns and to evidence that can be checked. Apply two tests:

  • Completeness: Does every material finding have a recorded evidence chain?
  • Correctness: Does the chain genuinely support the finding attached to it?

For numerical claims, require the calculation, input values, and relevant table or code. For citation criticism, require the cited passage and explain the mismatch. For omissions, record the rule or reporting standard that establishes why the missing item matters. Google Research’s Chain-of-Evidence description uses the same completeness-and-correctness principle for research artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the system generates a proposed correction, score that separately from detection. Correctly spotting an unsupported conclusion does not prove that the model’s replacement conclusion is valid.

Preserve a reproducible audit trail

Another evaluator should be able to reconstruct the run and understand every scoring decision. Keep:

  • Test-set version, manuscript hashes, claim identifiers, and label files
  • Model and tool versions, access dates, prompts, inference settings, and retry behavior
  • Retrieval sources, browsing results, code-execution logs, and unavailable resources
  • Raw model outputs and the parser or rubric used to convert them into findings
  • Adjudicator identities or coded roles, instructions, disagreements, and resolution records
  • Scoring code, category definitions, severity weights, exclusions, and uncertainty calculations
  • Run date, hardware or service environment when relevant, failures, latency, and cost

Version the evaluation itself. Changing a prompt, retrieval corpus, parser, or label rule creates a new condition and should not be silently mixed with earlier results.

Compare systems on decision-relevant axes

When evaluating multiple systems, create a matrix rather than a single leaderboard position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis Question to answer
Error category and severity Which systems catch the problems that could change a conclusion?
Recall and precision How many consequential errors are missed, and how many flags are wrong?
Omission detection Does performance collapse when the needed information is absent?
Localization and evidence Can a human verify the finding quickly?
False-positive burden How much review time is spent dismissing invalid criticism?
Discipline and manuscript coverage Does the result transfer beyond the development domain?
Run stability Is the result repeatable under the same conditions?
Tools and retrieval What information or computational access produced the score?
Uncertainty and held-out status Are intervals reported, and could test cases have leaked into training?
Operational reproducibility Can another team rerun the evaluation and obtain comparable results?

Do not rank systems on an aggregate score unless the weighting is justified by the intended workflow and the underlying category results remain visible.

Choose a deployment rule without inventing a universal pass mark

The available evidence does not establish a universal pass score or safety threshold for AI peer-review systems. Set criteria from the consequences of missed errors, false alarms, required human oversight, and the diversity of manuscripts in scope.

A practical decision rule can specify:

  • A minimum recall for predefined high-severity categories
  • A maximum false-positive rate or reviewer-time budget
  • Required localization and evidence-chain quality
  • Acceptable uncertainty bounds, not just a point estimate
  • Mandatory human review for every flagged or unclassified case
  • Re-evaluation after model, prompt, retrieval, or corpus changes

For a triage tool, deployment may be reasonable when it reliably surfaces high-severity cases and presents verifiable evidence while leaving decisions to experts. For an autonomous acceptance decision, the evidence burden is substantially higher, and current benchmark results alone do not justify removing human oversight.

Interpret error spotting as one part of research credibility

Catching textual or statistical errors is not the same as establishing that a finding is true. SCORE’s outcomes distinguish reproducibility, robustness, and replicability and report only modest correlation among those dimensions. Include checks such as rerunning analyses, comparing code with specifications, verifying references, and examining whether conclusions remain stable under reasonable analytic choices.

A system can correctly flag a citation mismatch yet miss a fragile result that reproduces only under one dataset split. Conversely, a valid criticism may concern interpretation rather than a demonstrable factual error. Keep these questions separate in the evaluation report and state which ones the AI system was actually tested to answer.

A repeatable evaluation checklist

  1. Write the intended use, disciplines, manuscript types, evidence access, and human-review role.
  2. Define error categories, omission rules, severity levels, localization requirements, and uncertain status.
  3. Assemble real papers, controlled errors, valid claims, and legitimate criticisms.
  4. Obtain independent adjudication and preserve claim-level evidence and disagreement records.
  5. Split development and held-out sets; protect or rotate private cases against contamination.
  6. Freeze model, prompt, tools, retrieval, inference settings, and output schema.
  7. Run human references and AI systems under documented, comparable conditions.
  8. Report recall, precision, false alarms, localization, evidence correctness, severity, and run stability separately.
  9. Estimate uncertainty at the paper or document level and distinguish fixed-set from generalized accuracy.
  10. Audit evidence chains, raw outputs, scoring code, and every version change.
  11. Set workflow-specific deployment criteria and retain human review for consequential decisions.

If an evaluation cannot show which claims were tested, what evidence was available, which omissions were included, and how uncertainty was estimated, its headline score is not enough to support a reliability claim.
