Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: compare revenue that has actually been recognized and collected with the full, lifecycle cost of producing the company’s AI output. That means separating recurring inference expense from training and research, then adding accelerators, cloud capacity, depreciation or leases, power, facilities, networking, reliability, support, and financing. Test the result at realistic utilization and under downside scenarios; revenue growth or a large annualized run rate alone does not prove that infrastructure is economically supportable.
Start by defining what “support” means
An AI business can support infrastructure in several increasingly demanding senses. Gross operating coverage means customer revenue exceeds the variable cost of serving those customers. Operating coverage also pays salaries, sales, safety, software, and administration. Cash self-funding means operating cash flow can fund required hardware purchases, data-center expansion, deposits, leases, and debt service without repeated outside financing. State which test you are performing; passing the first does not imply passing the third.

Fix the entity and boundary before collecting numbers. A model API, a consumer application, a cloud platform, and a vertically integrated company recognize revenue and incur infrastructure costs differently. Specify the geography, currency, reporting period, accounting basis, and whether the analysis covers one product, a business segment, or the entire company. Do not mix a company’s calendar-year revenue with a supplier’s fiscal-year costs.

Build a defensible revenue numerator
Use recognized revenue for the same period as the costs. Where available, reconcile it to audited financial statements or a clearly identified company disclosure, and separately track cash collections. The following categories are not interchangeable:

| Revenue item | How to treat it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized product or subscription revenue | Primary numerator, using the company’s stated accounting policy | Represents performance delivered during the period |
| Cash collected | Track in a separate cash-coverage schedule | Shows whether invoices turn into liquidity in time to pay suppliers and lenders |
| Annual recurring revenue or annualized run rate | Scenario input, not period revenue | It extrapolates a point-in-time pace and may ignore churn, seasonality, discounts, or usage limits |
| Bookings, signed commitments, or contracted future revenue | Keep outside current revenue until earned | Contracts can be delayed, renegotiated, or conditional on capacity |
| Cloud credits, grants, investment proceeds, and loans | Exclude from operating revenue; disclose as financing or cost offsets where appropriate | They can provide cash or reduce a bill without proving customer demand or recurring economics |
For usage-priced APIs, obtain billable requests or tokens, effective price after discounts, refunds, and free tiers. For subscriptions, obtain active seats, retention, expansion, and the portion of a contract recognized each month. If revenue is disclosed only for a consolidated group, do not assign all of it to the AI service without an explicit allocation method. Private-company disclosures often lack a complete, standardized revenue dataset, so label estimates and confidence levels rather than presenting them as audited facts.
Map every infrastructure cost across its lifecycle
The denominator should follow an accelerator or server from acquisition through retirement, not stop at a cloud invoice. Show each category and indicate whether it is measured, allocated, or estimated.
Inference and production serving
Estimate accelerator time, host CPU and memory, storage, orchestration, model routing, data transfer, and provider charges for every production request. Include idle reservations and minimum commitments when capacity is paid for but not used. Record model mix, precision, batching, caching, context length, quality target, and latency target; a cheap low-quality response is not equivalent to a high-quality response that meets a service-level objective.

Separate pre-training, post-training, evaluation, safety runs, failed experiments, and internal research from customer inference. Training may be lumpy, but it is still an economic cost of building the product. Allocate it over an explicitly chosen period, such as a model’s expected commercial life, and show the sensitivity to that useful-life assumption. If a source reports only aggregate compute spend, preserve that limitation instead of pretending to know the inference share.
Hardware ownership, rental, and replacement
For owned equipment, include purchase price, installation, expected useful life, residual value, depreciation, maintenance, and replacement cycles. For rented capacity, include the provider invoice and committed minimums. Do not add the provider’s capital cost again unless you are analyzing the provider itself; doing so double-counts the same hardware. Capitalized software and internally developed systems need a consistent policy as well.

Power, facilities, and networking
Include electricity, demand charges, cooling, water, racks, security, building operations, data-center leases, cross-connects, internet transit, and inter-region traffic. A quoted per-GPU-hour rate may bundle some of these items and exclude others. Ask the supplier what is included, then document the boundary. Capacity that cannot be energized because of a power or facility constraint is not equivalent to capacity on paper.
Reliability, support, and compliance
Production economics include site-reliability engineering, monitoring, incident response, customer support, abuse prevention, security, audits, and data retention. Allocate shared teams using a reproducible driver such as requests, revenue, or reserved capacity. If those costs are omitted, call the result a direct-serving contribution rather than a company margin.
Financing and contractual obligations
Track interest, debt amortization, equipment financing, lease payments, take-or-pay cloud contracts, power reservations, construction commitments, and required collateral. A company may show positive gross contribution while needing substantial cash to build ahead of demand. Present operating coverage and financing capacity as separate lines.
Measure useful work, not just tokens or GPU-hours
Raw tokens and accelerator-hours are inputs. The economically relevant output is a useful task completed at a specified quality and latency. Define a unit such as a resolved support case, accepted code change, document processed to a stated accuracy, or an API response that passes a quality test.
Use these basic measures:
- Revenue per useful task = recognized revenue allocated to the product ÷ valid tasks delivered.
- Direct cost per useful task = accelerator, memory, networking, power, cooling, and provider charges for those tasks ÷ valid tasks.
- Gross contribution = product revenue − direct serving cost.
- Contribution margin = gross contribution ÷ product revenue.
- Cash coverage ratio = cash available for infrastructure ÷ scheduled capex, lease, debt, and other infrastructure cash requirements for the same period.
Count only valid production work. Exclude retries caused by errors, speculative generations that users never accept, and idle capacity from the denominator while retaining their cost in the numerator of the cost calculation. Report quality, latency, and workload mix beside every unit-cost figure so that an optimization that lowers quality is not mistaken for a real efficiency gain.

Use evidence with an explicit confidence grade
Create a data register with the period, currency, source, accounting definition, and confidence for every line. Audited revenue and cash-flow statements are high-confidence. A contractual cloud bill is usually high-confidence for the billed service but may hide bundled facilities costs. Management estimates, industry proxies, and extrapolated run rates deserve lower grades. Keep a separate column for one-time items such as launch training, an inventory write-down, or a temporary credit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index reports that annual compute spending for OpenAI and Anthropic increased from 2024 to 2025. The report presents annual compute spend as a proxy for compute procured, largely rented cloud capacity; it is not a complete infrastructure-cost or profitability measure. The publicly surfaced extract does not provide a complete figure table here, so do not quote a precise amount without checking the report’s table and footnotes.
Follow this evaluation sequence
- Fix the boundary. Name the entity, product, geography, currency, period, and whether the test is gross, operating, or cash self-funding.
- Reconcile revenue. Start with recognized revenue, then reconcile collections, refunds, credits, deferred revenue, and concentration by customer. Put annualized run rate, bookings, and future commitments on separate lines.
- Classify compute. Split training, research, evaluation, and production inference. If the evidence reports aggregate compute, retain the aggregate label and provide a range for the split.
- Calculate direct serving cost. Measure accelerator time, memory, networking, power, cooling, cloud fees, batching, caching, utilization, model mix, quality, and latency for each workload.
- Add lifecycle obligations. Include owned-hardware depreciation and replacement, rental commitments, leases, facilities, power contracts, maintenance, and financing. Remove overlapping provider capital costs.
- Calculate two results. First show revenue minus direct service cost. Then subtract operating expenses and infrastructure cash requirements to show operating and cash coverage.
- Stress the assumptions. Run downside, base, and upside cases for demand, price per task, utilization, model efficiency, power and cloud prices, hardware life, customer mix, and financing terms.
- Report a threshold. When assumptions permit, solve for break-even utilization, price per useful task, or monthly revenue required to cover fixed obligations.
Account for utilization and physical constraints
Capacity economics depend on how much of a purchased or reserved system produces useful work. A simple break-even utilization estimate is:
Break-even utilization = fixed infrastructure cost ÷ [(price per useful task − variable cost per useful task) × maximum useful-task capacity]
Use effective capacity, not a theoretical benchmark. Reduce it for maintenance, failover headroom, queueing targets, model-migration windows, and geographic redundancy. Low utilization can make a seemingly inexpensive accelerator expensive per task. Conversely, demand may be strong while growth is constrained by unavailable power, interconnection delays, scarce facilities, or a supplier’s allocation policy.

NVIDIA’s 2026 Form 10-Q captures the physical reality: “The availability of land, power, shell, and capital is crucial to support the buildout of a full data center inclusive of NVIDIA AI infrastructure by our customers and partners.” Treat land, energized space, construction timing, and financing access as capacity variables in the model, not as footnotes.
Keep supplier economics separate from model-company economics
A hardware supplier’s margin is not an AI application’s margin. NVIDIA reported first-half fiscal 2027 gross margin of 75.0%, up from 66.6% in the first half of fiscal 2026, and disclosed a $4.5 billion H20-related inventory and purchase-obligation charge affecting the prior-year first half. Those are supplier results, influenced in part by product mix; they do not establish what an AI model provider earns after cloud, facilities, engineering, or financing costs. Use the filing to understand supply-chain constraints and supplier exposure, not as a substitute for the model company’s accounts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run downside, base, and upside cases
Make assumptions visible rather than presenting a single point estimate. A useful scenario table looks like this:
| Variable | Downside case | Base case | Upside case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demand and paid volume | Lower volume, higher churn, or delayed contracts | Current observed volume and retention | Contracted expansion that is operationally deliverable |
| Revenue per useful task | Discounting, free tiers, or mix shift to cheaper plans | Recent realized price after credits and refunds | Higher-value workload mix with evidence of willingness to pay |
| Utilization | Idle reservations and redundancy reduce effective capacity | Measured production utilization | Improved batching and routing without quality loss |
| Model efficiency | Longer contexts, larger models, or quality-driven retries | Current model and workload mix | Verified caching, quantization, or routing savings |
| Power and cloud price | Higher tariffs, egress, or provider rates | Contracted or recent invoice rates | Negotiated rates that are actually available at required scale |
| Hardware life and financing | Shorter useful life, delays, higher interest, or refinancing risk | Existing depreciation and committed terms | Longer life or cheaper capital supported by signed terms |
Show the resulting revenue, direct cost, contribution, operating cash flow, capex, debt and lease payments, and ending cash for each case. The most informative output is often a threshold: for example, the utilization or realized price at which the base case turns cash-negative. Do not call an upside case a forecast unless management has supplied a documented forecast and the assumptions are testable.
Compare deployment models on the same axes
Comparisons are meaningful only when the boundary and workload are identical. Use a matrix like this and mark unavailable cells as not stated rather than guessing.
Best Value
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Revenue evidence | Is it recognized revenue, cash collected, an annualized run rate, bookings, or a commitment? What period and accounting basis apply? |
| Inference versus training | Are production-serving costs separated from model development and research, or reported only as aggregate compute? |
| Quality-adjusted unit cost | What useful task, quality test, latency target, and workload mix define the unit? |
| Utilization and commitments | What fraction of capacity performs useful work, and what minimum reservations or take-or-pay contracts remain? |
| Ownership and leases | Who owns the hardware, who records depreciation, and are rental invoices being double-counted with capital costs? |
| Power, facilities, and networking | Are electricity, cooling, buildings, cross-connects, and data transfer included or allocated separately? |
| Cash generation | What are gross contribution, operating cash flow, capex, lease payments, debt maturities, and cash runway? |
| Downside resilience | How do margins change with lower demand, lower utilization, higher power prices, shorter hardware life, or tighter financing? |
Illustrative calculation (not a company estimate)
Suppose a hypothetical API records $12 million of recognized quarterly revenue and collects $11 million in cash. Its measured production workload is 240 million valid tasks. Accelerator, memory, networking, power, cooling, and provider charges total $6 million, so direct cost is $0.025 per task and gross contribution is $6 million. A separate $3 million of quarterly operating expense leaves $3 million before infrastructure expansion.
Assume the company must also pay $4 million for committed capacity, equipment leases, and scheduled hardware purchases during the quarter. It has a $1 million opening cash balance available for infrastructure. The API passes the direct-serving test but fails the cash self-funding test: $3 million of pre-expansion operating contribution does not cover $4 million of obligations, and the available cash leaves a $0 million cushion before unexpected costs. If utilization rises while quality and price remain constant, the fixed-cost burden per task falls; if price is discounted or tasks become more compute-intensive, the threshold moves in the opposite direction. The figures are deliberately illustrative; substitute verified company data before drawing a conclusion.
Lifecycle accounting proposals: useful, but not a standard
A 2025 preprint proposes “Levelized Cost of Artificial Intelligence” (LCOAI), which expresses lifecycle capital and operating expense per unit of productive AI output normalized by valid inference volume. It applies the framework to representative API and self-hosted scenarios and performs sensitivity analysis. LCOAI can help make hardware life, utilization, and output definitions explicit, but it is a research proposal, not an established accounting standard. Use it as a supplementary lens and disclose every normalization choice.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using revenue growth as proof of sustainability. Correct it by calculating contribution and cash coverage in the same period.
- Treating annualized run rate as revenue. Keep run rate in a scenario column until the underlying sales are recognized.
- Counting investment or cloud credits as sales. Show them as financing or cost offsets with expiry and conditions.
- Comparing token prices without quality or latency. Define a valid task and report its quality-adjusted cost.
- Ignoring idle and reserved capacity. Charge the full committed cost and divide by useful output.
- Mixing provider and customer capital costs. Assign depreciation to the owner and avoid adding it again to a rental bill.
- Putting training entirely in one month. Show both period cash outlay and an amortized product-life view.
- Omitting financing and replacement. Add lease, debt, deposits, refresh cycles, and construction commitments to the cash schedule.
- Calling a supplier’s gross margin a model-company margin. Keep supplier filings as context, not as evidence of application profitability.
- Hiding uncertainty behind a precise number. Publish ranges, source quality, assumptions, and sensitivity to the variables that change the verdict.
A decision rule for readers and analysts
Conclude that infrastructure is supportable only when recognized revenue and realistic collections cover direct serving cost at the required quality, the business remains viable after training, research, support, and other operating costs, and cash plus committed financing covers replacement and expansion obligations under a credible downside case. If the company passes only under an optimistic utilization, pricing, or financing assumption, describe it as conditionally supportable. If key inputs are undisclosed, report the range and the missing evidence rather than declaring profitability.
