How to Evaluate Whether a New Video Game IP Is Worth Following Before Launch

Judge the evidence, not the pitch. A new game is worth following when you can explain its repeatable play loop, public footage shows that loop clearly, a demo answers your practical questions, and the developer separates shipped features from plans. A wishlist or follow is useful for reminders; it is not evidence that the game is good or will succeed. If representative gameplay is still unavailable, waiting is the rational choice.

Start with the decision you are actually making

“Worth following” is not the same question as “worth buying.” Following a game can mean bookmarking its store page, adding it to a wishlist, subscribing to announcements, or checking back after a demo. Those actions cost little and preserve your option to reassess. Buying, pre-ordering, or entering Early Access commits money before you know whether the finished experience will suit you.

Use a higher evidence standard for a purchase than for a follow. Before launch, you rarely have reliable information about final performance, the complete feature set, server capacity, or how the developer will respond after release. You can still make a disciplined decision by asking what is playable now, what is merely promised, and whether the available evidence matches your own preferences.

1. Translate the pitch into a playable promise

Marketing language often emphasizes a setting, characters, or cinematic premise. Those details may attract you, but they do not tell you what you will do minute after minute. Rewrite the store description in operational terms: “I move through these spaces, make these decisions, use these systems, and repeat this loop for this purpose.” If you cannot complete that sentence, the game has not yet communicated enough for a confident judgment.

Extract the facts that determine personal fit

  • Genre and structure: Identify whether it is, for example, a turn-based strategy game, an action role-playing game, a puzzle game, a survival game, or a simulation. Also note whether it is mission-based, open-ended, linear, or run-based.
  • Core actions: List the actions the player repeats: aiming, building, negotiating, exploring, solving, managing resources, directing a squad, or something else.
  • Perspective and pace: First-person, third-person, top-down, side-scrolling, real-time, and turn-based formats create different demands on attention and controls.
  • Mode and audience: Record whether play is solo, cooperative, competitive, or always online. A compelling concept can be a poor fit if it requires a group or connection you do not have.
  • Platforms and input: Check the announced platforms and whether the footage appears to use a controller, mouse and keyboard, touch controls, or a combination.
  • Distinctive hook: State what the game does differently from familiar examples, then ask whether that difference changes play or is only story and presentation.

Next, look for agreement among the description, screenshots, and videos. If the description promises systemic stealth but every screenshot shows combat, or the trailer highlights story scenes without demonstrating the advertised systems, mark the promise as unverified rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

2. Inspect footage for decisions, not spectacle

Watch enough footage to see the player make decisions and receive consequences. A useful video shows interfaces, movement, encounters, resource use, level flow, failure states, and transitions between activities. Promotional editing can make a game look exciting without showing how often those activities occur or how much control the player has.

A practical footage checklist

  1. Measure the playable portion. Note whether the video contains sustained, uncut interaction or mostly title cards, dialogue scenes, visual effects, and cinematic shots.
  2. Identify the loop. Can you see an action, a decision, an outcome, and a reason to repeat the process? If not, you have seen presentation rather than evidence of play.
  3. Check representativeness. Ask whether the locations, enemies, missions, or characters shown appear to be ordinary systems or a specially staged showcase.
  4. Look for friction. Observe aiming, camera behavior, menus, text readability, tutorials, loading, and the time required to perform common actions.
  5. Separate build information from inference. A video may be captured from a development build, a high-end PC, or a controlled demonstration. Do not treat it as proof of launch performance or complete feature coverage.

Research on multimodal game-rating prediction illustrates why a trailer alone is weak evidence. A 2018 paper by Vishal Batchu, Varshit Battu, Murali Krishna Reddy, and Radhika Mamidi reported that adding written summaries improved prediction accuracy by over 5% compared with trailer-only input in its experiments. The authors also described irrelevant imagery and dataset limitations. That result is not a score for an individual unreleased game and should not be converted into a consumer threshold; it simply supports checking concrete descriptions alongside video. Read the paper.

3. Give a playable demo the most useful kind of attention

A demo lets you test controls, pacing, readability, onboarding, and the basic loop directly. Steam Next Fest is organized around playable demos and describes real-time player feedback as part of the event’s purpose. Valve’s Steam Next Fest documentation explains the event format.

Use a demo to answer specific questions

  • Do movement, aiming, camera control, or menu navigation feel comfortable?
  • Does the game explain objectives and rules without relying on outside guides?
  • How long does it take to reach the central loop?
  • Are choices meaningful, or do different actions produce the same result?
  • Does the difficulty curve match your tolerance for failure and repetition?
  • For multiplayer, can you test matchmaking, party setup, communication, and the minimum number of players required?

Keep the demo’s limits in view. It may contain a tutorial, a vertical slice, or a deliberately polished section rather than the systems that dominate the full release. Treat a positive demo as evidence that the sampled experience works for you, not as proof that every later area will match it.

Steam’s build review is also narrower than quality assurance. Valve says the review checks whether a demo has the features promised and runs, but “it is not a full QA process, and will not catch or even look for most bugs.” See the Steam Next Fest build-review guidance. A demo that launches successfully can still contain defects, missing content, or performance problems outside the tested slice.

4. Audit development communication

Once you understand the intended loop, examine how the team communicates progress. Prefer dated announcements, patch notes, development demonstrations, and explanations of what changed. Good updates distinguish clearly between a feature that exists in the current build, a feature being tested, and an idea that may never ship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What transparent updates look like

  • They identify the build, date, or milestone being discussed.
  • They show the feature in operation instead of only naming it.
  • They explain removed, delayed, or redesigned systems rather than quietly leaving old promises visible.
  • They acknowledge known technical issues and describe the next investigation or fix.
  • They avoid treating concept art, prototype footage, or a roadmap as a guarantee.

Sparse communication is not automatic proof that a project is failing. It is a reason to lower confidence and revisit the decision when new evidence appears. A steady stream of vague posts is also weaker than fewer updates that document real, playable changes.

5. Treat Early Access as a purchase of the current build

Early Access is appropriate only if the present version already provides enough value for you, including its current bugs, missing systems, and possible resets. Valve’s Early Access guidance states: “Customers should be buying your game based on its current state, not on promises of a future that may or may not be realized.” Read the Early Access documentation.

That guidance also distinguishes Early Access from a pre-purchase: Early Access delivers a playable product when you buy it, while a pre-purchase is paid before the later release is delivered. Therefore, ask two separate questions: Would I enjoy the current build even if development stopped, and am I comfortable with the uncertainty around the eventual version? If the answer to either is no, follow the game instead of buying it.

6. Use wishlists and follows as tracking tools, not quality scores

A wishlist is a low-commitment reminder. On Steam, wishlisted customers may receive an email when a game launches or when a qualifying discount of 20% or greater is applied. Valve also says, “With a few exceptions like the Popular Upcoming tab, wishlists are not a factor in your game’s algorithmic visibility on Steam.” See the current Visibility on Steam documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those rules make a wishlist useful for timing and recall, not for judging quality. Public wishlist totals are often unavailable, are not comparable across audiences, and do not reveal whether the core loop fits you. There is no authoritative universal wishlist number that predicts whether a particular new IP deserves your attention.

7. Be especially cautious with pre-orders

Pre-ordering asks you to commit before you can evaluate the complete product. Valve says most Steam pre-purchase campaigns do not bring much sales and recommends saving excitement for when customers can play. It supports pre-purchases only rarely for established partners with a proven Steam track record. Read Valve’s pre-purchase guidance.

This is a Steam policy, not a universal rule for every store. For an individual buyer, however, the practical implication is broad: if the reasons to buy early are limited to a cinematic trailer, a promised future feature, or fear of missing out, waiting for a demo, independent hands-on impressions, or the launch build preserves more information and fewer risks.

Axis Strong evidence Weak evidence or unresolved question
Gameplay clarity You can describe the repeatable actions, decisions, and outcomes from public material. The pitch names a world or feature list but never demonstrates what players repeatedly do.
Evidence quality Representative gameplay and, ideally, a demo let you test the loop yourself. The material is mostly cinematic, heavily edited, or from an unidentified build.
Personal fit Genre, pace, difficulty, mode, platform, and input match your preferences and practical setup. You would need to change your habits, assemble a group, or buy hardware without knowing whether the loop suits you.
Development transparency Dated updates distinguish existing features from plans and document changes. Roadmaps and concept statements dominate, with little evidence of current progress.
Commitment risk You can follow or wishlist free, then decide after a demo or launch. The decision asks for an advance purchase before representative play is available.

This framework is a decision aid, not a prediction model. It cannot guarantee launch quality, commercial success, or long-term support. Its purpose is to make your reasons explicit and to show which missing fact would change your mind.

Build a personal evidence record

For each game, keep a short note with five fields. Record the date because store pages, features, and plans can change.

  1. Promise: Write one sentence describing the loop in your own words.
  2. Observed: List the systems you have actually seen in footage or tested in a demo.
  3. Unverified: List advertised features you have not seen working.
  4. Fit: Note platform, mode, pace, difficulty, and social requirements that matter to you.
  5. Next evidence: Specify what would justify a revisit, such as a public demo, a performance demonstration, or a dated update showing a missing system.

This record prevents a common mistake: remembering the most exciting promise while forgetting that it was never demonstrated. It also lets you change your decision without treating a changed opinion as inconsistency; new evidence should change confidence.

Red flags that should lower confidence

  • The only material showing the signature mechanic is a cinematic or a brief montage with no interface or player decisions.
  • The store description, screenshots, and footage describe visibly different games.
  • A roadmap is presented as if every future item were guaranteed, without a playable build or dated progress.
  • The team announces a release date while basic questions about mode, platform, or the core loop remain unanswered.
  • A demo contains a polished opening but provides no indication of how the advertised long-term systems work.
  • Pre-order pressure is stronger than the evidence available to evaluate the game.

None of these signs proves that a game will be bad. They indicate that the uncertainty is high enough to postpone a commitment. Reassess when the missing evidence becomes available.

What not to infer from popularity research

Studies of Steam popularity have reported associations involving factors such as price, game size, supported languages, release date, and genre. Those analyses focus on early post-release popularity; they do not provide a dependable pre-launch verdict for one unreleased IP. Read the study on predicting Steam game popularity. A visible audience, follower count, or trending position may tell you that attention exists, but not that you will enjoy the game or that it will meet its promises.

A concise decision rule

Follow when the concept interests you but the loop is not yet demonstrated, when a demo raises unanswered questions, or when development plans outweigh current evidence. Consider buying at launch when representative play is clear, the tested loop fits your preferences, the platform and mode work for you, and you are comfortable waiting for independent confirmation of performance and scope. Consider Early Access only when the current build is already worth its price to you without relying on future additions. Avoid pre-ordering when the primary reasons are hype, scarcity, or promises you cannot verify.

The strongest pre-launch signal is not a slogan, a wishlist total, or a release-date graphic. It is a consistent chain of evidence: a clearly stated loop, footage that demonstrates it, a demo that feels right in your hands, and communication that tells you what exists now. When that chain is incomplete, keeping the game on your watch list is a successful evaluation—not a missed opportunity.
