To evaluate an esports organization’s financial health, look past headline revenue and a single profitable year. First establish which legal entities and business lines its accounts cover; then assess how dependable its revenue is, whether each operation earns a sustainable margin, whether cash can meet obligations, and how exposed the organization is to sponsors, publishers, leagues, and competitive results. Compare several periods using the same reporting scope, and separate audited figures from management explanations and industry survey estimates.
1. Define what the accounts actually cover
Before judging performance, identify the legal entity behind the figures and the reporting perimeter: a single team, a multi-title esports organization, a parent company, or a wider group. A parent may also operate talent management, events, game publishing, media services, or unrelated businesses. Do not attribute group revenue or profit to its esports teams unless the filing reports the team segment separately.

Read the financial statements with their notes and management’s discussion of financial condition. The SEC-filed company example itself instructs readers to consider that discussion alongside consolidated statements and notes. Record the financial year-end, currency, accounting basis, consolidation scope, and whether the statements are audited. Use at least three years when available: a roster change, one-off sponsorship, transfer, championship, acquisition, or accounting timing can make a single year misleading.

Build a revenue bridge by business line wherever disclosures permit. Possible sources include sponsorship and advertising, publisher or league revenue sharing, media or content rights, prize winnings, player transfers or rental fees, merchandise, digital goods, events, and adjacent services. A company filing lists league revenue sharing, prize money, athlete transfer and rental fees, sponsorship, and advertising among esports-team revenue sources (SEC-filed annual report, fiscal 2025).

For each material line, ask whether the income is contracted, recurring, and collected in cash—or instead depends on viewership, results, renewal, or a one-off event. Identify the largest sponsors and publishers where disclosed, and examine termination and renewal rights. A sponsorship contract can bundle much more than logo placement: title sponsorship, exclusivity, social and media rights, activations, hospitality, tickets, and merchandising rights are among the deliverables described in a company disclosure (SEC-filed annual report). Compare the payment schedule and delivery obligations with the contract’s stated value.
Revenue models vary by game and league. Riot Games says League of Legends teams historically earned most of their revenue from sponsorship, with media rights contributing much less; its revised model also changed how digital revenue was shared with teams. That describes Riot’s League of Legends ecosystem, not esports as a whole (Riot Games, 2024).

Use sector averages carefully
A Deloitte Insights survey published in 2022 found that surveyed esports teams averaged about 65% of revenue from core esports activities, including sponsorship sales at 37% and prize money at 15% (Deloitte Insights, 2022). These are historical survey findings, not audited company data, current market averages, or targets a healthy organization must meet.
3. Compare costs, margins, and earnings quality
Separate roster compensation and related costs from event production, content, travel, facilities, and central overhead when the disclosures allow. Compare gross profit and gross margin by segment, followed by operating income and net income. Then ask whether the recurring business can cover recurring costs without owner funding, one-off deals, or exceptional prize results.

Keep the reporting perimeter attached to every comparison. In its 2026 SEC filing covering fiscal years 2024 and 2025, one company reported consolidated revenue of US$85.3 million in 2024 and US$126.5 million in 2025, while consolidated gross margin shifted from 3.5% to negative 1.2%. Its esports-team operation was a different, narrower segment: revenue was US$14.7 million in 2024 and US$11.8 million in 2025, while team gross margin fell from 17.1% to 6.8% (SEC-filed annual report, 2026). These figures illustrate why group revenue growth alone does not show whether the esports operation is becoming healthier; they are not a benchmark for other organizations.
The same filer’s 2025 annual report compared esports-team gross profit of US$6.6 million in 2023 with US$2.5 million in 2024, and margin of 30.6% with 17.1%. Management attributed the decline primarily to lower sponsorship and advertising revenue together with lower IP licensing revenue (SEC-filed annual report, 2025). Treat that as management’s explanation, then check the underlying statements and notes; an attributed cause is not itself independent verification.

4. Test cash flow and ability to withstand a shock
Profit on an income statement does not guarantee that an organization has cash available when bills fall due. Check cash and equivalents, operating cash flow, receivables and collection patterns, payables, current debt, and committed financing. Estimate cash runway only if reliable cash and burn figures are available, and state the assumptions behind the estimate.

Run a practical stress test: could the organization meet obligations if a major sponsor leaves, league payments arrive late, results or viewership decline, a publisher changes revenue sharing, or expected financing fails to arrive? Riot Games described the financial pressure behind changes to its League of Legends esports strategy this way: “Over time, access to capital became limited, revenue growth didn’t catch up to cost growth, and team cash reserves dried up.” This is Riot’s explanation of its own league strategy, not a measured finding about every esports team (Riot Games, 2024).

5. Inspect liabilities and dependence on new financing
Use the balance sheet and notes to check borrowings, shareholder loans, lease obligations, deferred revenue, guarantees, related-party transactions, and debt maturities. Compare obligations with cash and collectible receivables, and determine whether ongoing operations fund the organization or it repeatedly depends on owners, refinancing, asset sales, or new investment. Positive equity or an accounting profit alone does not establish solvency: cash timing and contractual liabilities matter.
There is no universal esports-sector debt or liquidity threshold established by the cited disclosures. Assess whether this organization can meet its own obligations, rather than grading it against an invented cutoff.
6. Assess dependence on publishers, leagues, and partners
Map exposure by game title, publisher, league slot, and major commercial partner. Review participation fees or slot costs, revenue-sharing terms, qualification rules, exit provisions, and the consequences of relegation or roster performance where relevant. A change in a publisher’s rules can affect revenue or the value of participation, so use primary evidence for the specific game and league. Riot’s account documents a change to the League of Legends esports strategy; it should not be treated as evidence about other publishers (Riot Games, 2024).
7. Compare organizations on a like-for-like basis
When comparing two organizations, use the same period length, reporting perimeter, and accounting basis. A parent-company total should not be compared with another organization’s team-only segment. Where disclosures are incomplete, mark the relevant information unavailable rather than filling gaps with sector averages.
- Revenue: concentration, recurrence, cash collection, and dependence on performance or renewal.
- Profitability: segment gross margin, operating margin, and whether recurring revenue covers recurring costs.
- Cash: cash from operations, receivables quality, liquidity, and runway when reliable inputs exist.
- Obligations: debt burden, maturities, leases, guarantees, and related-party financing.
- Resilience: exposure to publisher or league decisions, sponsor concentration, and competitive outcomes.
Private organizations may not publish enough detail to assess every dimension. State what is known and what is not; do not treat missing team-level disclosure as proof of either financial weakness or strength.
