The most reliable way to evaluate a semiconductor company in a downturn is to follow the shock from end-market demand to customer inventories, orders, pricing, shipments, factory utilization, margins, cash flow and balance-sheet commitments. Then compare the company with businesses that have the same operating model. A memory producer, a contract foundry, a fabless designer and an equipment supplier can all report falling revenue for entirely different reasons.
Use quarterly and annual filings from comparable periods, separate temporary inventory correction from lasting competitive damage, and test whether the company can keep funding technology and capacity through a prolonged weak cycle. The framework below is designed for that work; it is not a current valuation ranking or a prediction of the October 2026 market phase.

What a semiconductor downturn actually does to a company
A downturn is not one event recorded in the income statement. It is a chain of operating effects. End customers may sell fewer phones, PCs, vehicles, servers or industrial systems. They and their distributors then work down existing chip stocks before placing new orders. Suppliers see order push-outs, cancellations or weaker bookings, reduce wafer starts or production, and carry less factory volume through their fixed-cost base. Average selling prices, unit shipments and product mix can move at different speeds. The result may be lower revenue, lower gross margin, negative operating leverage, weaker cash generation and a greater need to finance inventory or committed capacity.

Memory suppliers often experience sharp price and bit-shipment swings. Foundries have high fixed manufacturing costs and utilization sensitivity, but may have long-term customer relationships and a broad technology portfolio. Fabless companies avoid owning fabs but remain exposed to customer demand and to the cost and availability of outsourced capacity. Equipment and materials suppliers are one or more steps removed from chip demand and can be hit when manufacturers defer capital spending. Diversified integrated manufacturers combine several of these exposures.

Your first question should therefore be: what specific mechanism would make this company’s earnings fall, and what evidence shows that mechanism is reversing or worsening?
Start by identifying the business model and demand exposure
Memory producers
Dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and NAND businesses are particularly sensitive to selling prices, bits shipped and customer inventory. A correction can produce simultaneous pressure on price and volume. Micron described the memory and storage environment as deteriorating sharply in the fourth quarter of 2022 and through 2023 because of weak end-market demand, macroeconomic challenges and customer actions to reduce inventories. In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended May 30, 2024, the company also reported lower DRAM and NAND average selling prices and lower DRAM bit shipments in the cited downturn period.
For a memory company, read the filing for bit growth, average selling prices, inventory levels, production cuts, wafer starts and the timing of supply reductions. A revenue decline caused mainly by prices has a different recovery path from one caused by customers buying fewer bits.

A foundry manufactures wafers for customers that design chips but generally do not own leading-edge fabs. Examine wafer revenue, wafer starts, utilization, process-node mix, customer concentration and long-term capacity commitments. Node mix can change the economics of a quarter even when total wafer volume is stable: advanced processes typically carry different pricing, yields, development costs and capacity constraints than mature nodes.
TSMC’s 2024 annual report provides a useful illustration of why mix matters: 3-nanometer technology represented 18% of total wafer revenue in 2024, while technologies at 7 nanometers and beyond represented 69%. Those are company-specific, dated figures, not a universal benchmark. A foundry comparison should use each company’s own disclosed node and application mix.
Fabless designers
Fabless companies design chips and contract manufacturing and packaging. Their factories may not create direct underutilization charges, but they can still suffer from customer inventory corrections, order cancellations, excess finished goods, non-cancellable purchase commitments and the loss of scarce foundry capacity. Check whether revenue is concentrated in a few customers or applications, how much inventory is held by distributors, and whether the company is paying for capacity it no longer needs.
Equipment and materials suppliers
These companies sell into customers’ capital-spending plans. A chip manufacturer can maintain production while postponing a new fab, delaying equipment acceptance or stretching out a materials order. Track bookings, billings, backlog quality, cancellation provisions, geographic exposure and customers’ announced capital expenditure. A large backlog is not automatically durable if customers can defer delivery or if projects depend on financing.
Diversified integrated manufacturers
An integrated device manufacturer may design, manufacture and sell its own chips, with exposure to several end markets. Separate the businesses before drawing a conclusion. Automotive and industrial demand may normalize on a different schedule from smartphones or PCs; a strong networking product can mask weakness in consumer electronics. Segment gross margin, inventory and capital spending where the filing provides them.

Map end markets before interpreting a revenue decline
List the company’s material exposure to data centers, smartphones, PCs, automotive, industrial, communications and other applications. Then ask which end markets are cyclical, which are growing structurally and which are being destocked. A broad semiconductor-market rebound can coexist with weakness in one application or customer group.
Do not infer end-market health from a single headline number. A company with high data-center exposure may benefit from accelerated computing while suffering in networking, storage or enterprise systems. An automotive supplier may face a customer production pause even when vehicle semiconductor content continues to rise over the long term. Management commentary should be checked against segment revenue, units, backlog and the next quarter’s guidance.
Follow inventory through the channel
Why inventory is a transmission mechanism
Inventory is more than a balance-sheet line. When customers or distributors hold excess chips, they can meet production needs without placing fresh orders. That demand pause travels upstream as lower bookings, order push-outs or cancellations. Suppliers may then cut production and wafer starts, which can create underutilization charges and affect future availability.
Microchip reported that customers requested to push out or cancel backlog as they reduced inventory. Micron described a similar pattern in memory during 2022–2023. These examples show why a company’s own inventory can look stable while customer or distributor inventory is being corrected, or why an apparently healthy backlog may not convert into shipments.
Use dollars and days together
Inventory dollars show the absolute funding requirement; inventory days put that balance in relation to sales. Both can mislead when viewed alone. Days can rise simply because sales fall, even if inventory dollars are nearly unchanged. Microchip reported inventory of $1.31 billion at December 31, 2023, versus $1.32 billion at March 31, 2023, while inventory days rose from 169 to 185. The company said lower net sales contributed to the increase in days.
| Inventory measure | Microchip comparison | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory dollars | $1.31 billion at December 31, 2023; $1.32 billion at March 31, 2023 | Nearly unchanged dollars do not prove demand is healthy or unhealthy; inspect composition and reserves. |
| Inventory days | 185 days at December 31, 2023; 169 days at March 31, 2023 | Higher days can result from lower sales, slower turns, product mix or timing of materials. |
| Channel and customer stock | Not stated in the cited comparison | Seek distributor inventory, customer normalization commentary and backlog actions in filings. |
Check quality, not just quantity
Read the notes for reserves, write-downs, obsolescence, aging and product-specific exposure. A high inventory balance may be strategically useful if it consists of current, committed products; it may be a future charge if demand has shifted or a process node is being replaced. Compare inventory with expected shipments, not with a generic industry target.
Decompose revenue into price, volume and mix
When a company reports lower sales, split the change into the variables the business actually controls or experiences:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Units or bits shipped: Did customers buy fewer chips, or did the company deliberately limit supply?
- Average selling price: Did contract prices reset, spot prices fall or a product transition change the realized price?
- Product and technology mix: Did a higher share of advanced or premium products offset weakness elsewhere?
- Utilization and absorption: Did fixed factory costs spread over fewer wafers?
- Foreign exchange and one-time items: Are reported changes being distorted by currency or unusual charges?
Memory filings often provide the clearest price-and-volume disclosures. Micron’s cited downturn example included lower DRAM and NAND average selling prices and lower DRAM bit shipments. In a foundry or integrated manufacturer, the filing may emphasize wafer revenue, node mix and utilization instead. Use the company’s own operating metrics rather than applying a memory-style bit model to every semiconductor business.

Measure utilization and fixed-cost absorption
Manufacturing companies cannot reduce every cost in proportion to demand. Fabs, clean rooms, equipment leases, skilled labor and process-development programs remain in place while wafer starts fall. The resulting underutilization cost can reduce gross margin even after variable production costs are cut.
Micron reported $382 million of fab-underutilization period costs in fiscal 2023 because of wafer-start reductions and $165 million in its first quarter of fiscal 2024. These are company- and period-specific figures, not an industry-wide rate. The important analytical question is whether similar charges are recurring, declining as production recovers or being replaced by inventory reserves and restructuring costs.
For a manufacturer, track:
- Wafer starts and utilization by major site or segment, where disclosed.
- Unabsorbed capacity or underutilization charges in cost of goods sold.
- Production cuts relative to customer demand and inventory.
- Lead times and whether a cut risks future shortages.
- New-fab ramp costs, yield learning and the timing of commercial output.
For a fabless company, replace fab utilization with outsourced-capacity commitments, minimum purchase obligations, packaging constraints and the cost of unused wafers or components.

Management may respond with production cuts, hiring freezes, restructuring, lower discretionary spending or delayed capital expenditure. Separate cash savings from accounting presentation and temporary actions from damage to the product roadmap.
KPMG’s 2024 Global Semiconductor Industry Outlook Survey found that 51% of 172 respondents had postponed or planned to postpone capital expenditures in response to the economic environment. The survey allowed multiple responses; it does not establish that a particular company should cut spending or that every planned project is uneconomic.
Read whether a capex reduction postpones a low-return project, preserves cash during a temporary gap or jeopardizes process leadership and customer commitments. A company can improve near-term free cash flow by underinvesting in capacity or research and development, but that may weaken its position when demand returns.
Test cash flow, debt and committed spending
Start with operating cash flow and capital expenditure together. A company can report positive earnings while working capital consumes cash, or produce strong operating cash flow while carrying large future capacity commitments. Then examine:
- Cash and short-term investments relative to debt maturities.
- Interest expense, covenants and refinancing exposure.
- Committed fab, equipment and construction spending.
- Customer prepayments, long-term agreements and cancellation terms.
- Inventory purchases and potential working-capital release.
- Research and development needed to maintain product and process competitiveness.
- Access to external financing if the downturn lasts longer than management expects.
Long-term agreements can improve visibility but may also lock a company into capacity or pricing obligations. GlobalFoundries discusses wafer revenue and customer long-term agreements in its filings; use those disclosures to understand both the protection and the commitment rather than treating an agreement as guaranteed profit.

TSMC describes a disciplined capacity-planning system that evaluates the structural increase in long-term market demand before determining appropriate capacity to build. That approach illustrates the question to ask of any manufacturer: is new investment supported by durable customer demand, or is it being justified by a short-lived peak?
Separate a cyclical downturn from a structural problem
Signals consistent with a cyclical correction
- Customers and distributors report inventory normalization rather than permanent product abandonment.
- Orders are delayed but not broadly cancelled, and backlog begins converting into shipments.
- Pricing stabilizes before unit growth fully returns.
- Utilization charges peak and then decline as wafer starts recover.
- End-market weakness is concentrated in identifiable applications or regions.
- Technology roadmaps, yields and key-customer relationships remain intact.
Signals of structural deterioration
- Customers migrate to competing architectures, process nodes or suppliers.
- Market share falls even as the relevant end market recovers.
- Yield problems, delayed launches or quality issues persist across quarters.
- Inventory reserves and cancellations rise after management calls the market normalized.
- Debt, capacity commitments or underutilization charges restrict necessary investment.
- Revenue depends on one customer, product or application that is losing relevance.
Test a recovery claim against subsequent quarterly results and segment trends. “Normalization” is a management description, not proof that the cycle has turned. Look for improvement in orders, shipments, prices, utilization and cash in a sequence that makes economic sense.
Compare companies on the same operating axes
A fair comparison uses companies with similar models and accounting periods. The following questions prevent a memory producer from being judged by a foundry’s metrics or an equipment supplier by a fabless company’s inventory policy.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Business model | Is the company a memory producer, foundry, fabless designer, equipment or materials supplier, or integrated manufacturer? Which operating metrics fit that model? |
| End-market and customer exposure | Which customers and applications drive sales? Are customer or distributor inventory corrections visible? |
| Pricing and volume | Are revenue changes caused by units, selling prices, product mix, currency or shipment timing? |
| Manufacturing and utilization | What capacity is owned, outsourced or contractually committed? How do margins respond to lower loading? |
| Inventory quality | What are inventory dollars, days, reserves, channel levels and customer-normalization signals? |
| Cash and capital intensity | How do operating cash flow and capex compare? What debt, capacity and R&D commitments remain? |
| Competitive durability | Are technology, yields, customer relationships, diversification and market share strengthening or weakening? |
| Valuation | Are market prices measured on the same date, with the same accounting basis and explicit cycle-normalized earnings or cash-flow assumptions? |
Use a repeatable filing-based workflow
- Define the comparison set. Group companies by business model, major end markets and manufacturing exposure. Exclude superficially similar companies whose economics are different.
- Build a two- to five-year operating history. Record quarterly revenue, gross margin, operating margin, operating cash flow, capex, inventory, inventory days, debt, utilization indicators and segment mix. Mark unusual charges separately.
- Read the industry-conditions and risk sections. Extract statements about customer inventories, backlog push-outs, cancellations, pricing, lead times and production changes. Note the date and exact context.
- Reconcile demand with shipments. Compare management’s end-market commentary with unit, bit, wafer, booking or backlog data. Identify whether weakness is broad or concentrated.
- Bridge revenue and margin. Attribute changes to price, volume, mix, utilization, foreign exchange and one-time items wherever disclosure permits.
- Stress the balance sheet. Model a longer inventory correction, lower utilization, delayed customer payments and committed capex. Check debt maturities and liquidity under that scenario.
- Inspect investment choices. Decide which capex and R&D programs are essential to competitiveness and which can be delayed without losing customers or technology position.
- Check the next evidence point. Use the next filing, earnings call or industry indicator to test whether the assumed inventory and demand path occurred. Do not treat a single quarter as confirmation.
- Only then assess valuation. Use a common market date and state assumptions for normalized earnings, free cash flow, margins and the length of the cycle. A low trailing multiple can simply reflect peak earnings; a high multiple can reflect a depressed base or unrealistic recovery assumptions.
Model-specific questions to put in your spreadsheet
For memory
- What happened to DRAM and NAND average selling prices?
- Did bit shipments fall, and were production cuts large enough to rebalance supply?
- How much inventory is held by the company, distributors and customers?
- What underutilization, inventory-reserve or restructuring charges were recorded?
- Can the balance sheet fund the next technology transition through weak pricing?
For foundries
- How did wafer revenue and utilization change by node or platform?
- What portion of revenue comes from advanced technologies versus mature nodes?
- Are customer commitments firm, cancellable or dependent on a new product launch?
- What are the costs and expected timing of new-fab ramps?
- Does capacity planning reflect durable demand rather than a short-term peak?
For fabless designers
- How concentrated are customers, distributors and applications?
- What inventory and purchase commitments sit outside the company?
- Is outsourced wafer and packaging capacity flexible during a downturn?
- Are gross margins protected by differentiation or exposed to price competition?
- Can the company keep funding new designs while revenue is weak?
For equipment and materials suppliers
- Are bookings and billings falling before revenue?
- Can customers defer, cancel or reschedule backlog?
- How much exposure exists to a few large manufacturers or geographies?
- What portion of costs is variable, and how quickly can facilities and staffing adjust?
- Will postponed customer capex return, or is a technology transition reducing the addressable market?
For integrated manufacturers
- Which segments are absorbing the downturn and which are still growing?
- How much production is internal versus outsourced?
- Are inventory and utilization trends consistent across segments?
- Can management redirect capacity without sacrificing strategic products?
- Does diversification reduce volatility, or merely hide weakness in a smaller segment?
Common analytical mistakes
Using one industry number for every company
Industry revenue growth does not describe each company’s cycle. A market can grow while a supplier loses a customer, or decline while a company gains share. Always reconcile the market statistic with the company’s products and end markets.
Calling stable inventory dollars healthy
Stable dollars can coexist with rising inventory days, falling sales or increasing obsolescence risk. Review reserves, mix and customer stock.
Treating backlog as revenue
Backlog can be pushed out or cancelled, particularly when customers are correcting inventories. Check contractual terms and conversion history.
Ignoring fixed costs
Lower wafer starts can create underutilization costs that overwhelm savings elsewhere. Read the cost-of-goods notes and quantify the charges instead of relying on a gross-margin headline.
Cutting investment without considering the next cycle
Capex and R&D reductions may protect cash, but excessive cuts can delay process technology, product launches or customer qualification. Distinguish postponement from abandonment.
Best Value
Comparing peak earnings with a normal multiple
Use cycle-normalized earnings or cash flow with explicit assumptions. A multiple is meaningful only when the numerator and denominator reflect comparable dates and accounting treatments.
How to use dated industry evidence responsibly
The strongest operating examples in the cited company filings are from 2023 and 2024, and the SEMI monitor referenced here is dated April 2025. They explain the mechanics of a downturn but do not establish current fab utilization, 2026 guidance or October 2026 valuation multiples.
WSTS reported 2025 global semiconductor revenue of US$795.6 billion, up 26.2% year over year, according to a secondary 2025 annual report that cited WSTS data published in March 2026. Because the figure is reported secondhand and describes a completed year, it should not be used as proof that every company has recovered or that the current cycle is risk-free.
Recommended Free Tools
For a time-sensitive investment decision, replace dated examples with each company’s latest primary filing, current guidance, debt schedule, inventory disclosures and market data. Keep the historical figures in your model as evidence of how the business behaves under stress, not as a forecast.
A practical decision framework
After completing the analysis, classify the company on three separate dimensions rather than issuing one broad “good” or “bad” label:
| Dimension | Stronger position | Weaker position |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle exposure | Demand weakness is identifiable, inventory is normalizing and price or volume indicators are stabilizing. | Inventory keeps rising, cancellations broaden and pricing or shipments deteriorate after repeated normalization claims. |
| Financial resilience | Operating cash flow, liquidity and flexible spending can cover debt, essential capex and R&D through a prolonged downturn. | Working capital consumes cash, maturities are near, capacity commitments are rigid and investment must be cut to remain solvent. |
| Structural quality | Technology, yields, customer relationships, diversification and market share remain competitive. | Customers are switching, launches or yields are failing, and recovery depends on a shrinking product or customer base. |
A company can be financially resilient but structurally weak, or structurally attractive but unable to fund the downturn. Make those judgments separately, document the evidence and update them as new filings arrive.
Bottom line
Evaluate semiconductor companies during a downturn by tracing the complete operating chain: end-market demand, customer and channel inventory, orders, price, volume, mix, utilization, margins, cash flow and required investment. Compare like with like, quantify dated company-specific charges, and test whether management’s recovery story appears in subsequent shipments and cash generation. The best candidate is not necessarily the company with the smallest revenue decline; it is the one whose balance sheet can survive the correction while its technology, customers and capacity remain valuable when demand normalizes.
