Short answer: treat a report of possible extraterrestrial life as a claim about evidence and uncertainty, not as an automatic discovery. Ask what was actually measured, where and how it was measured, whether the signal fits the local environment, what nonbiological processes could produce it, whether independent observations corroborate it, and how cautiously the researchers state their conclusion.
NASA says that no clear signs of life beyond Earth have been detected. That status does not make every intriguing observation meaningless; it means the evidence has not crossed the much higher bar required to conclude that life is the best explanation.

What counts as evidence of extraterrestrial life?
Evidence is an observation that changes the relative plausibility of competing explanations. In astrobiology, those explanations usually include a biological process, an abiotic process produced by chemistry or geology, an environmental effect, and an instrumental or handling artifact. A useful claim therefore has two parts: the measured result and the interpretation attached to it.

A measured result might be a spectral absorption, a molecule, an organized structure, a pattern of activity, a mineral texture, or a result from a sample analysis. The interpretation might be that the result is compatible with metabolism, a biosignature, or an inhabited environment. Those are not interchangeable statements.

- Habitability evidence: conditions that could support life, such as a suitable solvent, energy source, or chemical ingredients.
- Life detection: a conclusion that biological activity is the best-supported explanation after alternatives and measurement limitations have been addressed.
NASA’s treatment of ancient Mars illustrates the distinction: evidence indicates that parts of Mars were once habitable, while whether life ever began or persisted there remains unresolved. A habitable environment is a setting in which life could survive; it is not evidence that life actually did.
How do scientists know if there is life on another planet?
They build a cumulative case. No single molecule, color, image, or atmospheric feature automatically identifies life. The most persuasive case would connect a reliably measured signal to a plausible environment, show that the signal is difficult to produce without biology, rule out realistic abiotic pathways, and obtain independent corroboration.
For an exoplanet, scientists must characterize the star, the planet’s orbit and atmosphere, and the climate context before interpreting a possible biosignature. For a Solar System world or returned sample, they also need precise provenance, chain-of-custody information, contamination controls, and an understanding of the surrounding geology and chemistry.

1. Translate the headline into the measured claim
Replace words such as “scientists find signs of life” with a precise question: what did the researchers observe directly? A headline may compress “a candidate chemical,” “a potentially habitable environment,” or “an unusual signal” into “signs of life.” Read the abstract, methods, and limitations to recover the narrower statement.
Look for verbs that identify the evidence: detected, measured, imaged, inferred, modeled, or interpreted. “Detected” describes an observation; it does not by itself establish the cause. “Consistent with life” means that biology remains possible, not that competing explanations have been eliminated.
2. Identify the target and measurement context
Ask where the signal came from and what was in the instrument’s field of view. A remote spectrum averages light through an atmosphere or across a planetary disk. A rover measurement samples a particular rock, soil layer, or plume. A laboratory result depends on how a sample was collected, sealed, transported, prepared, and analyzed.

For an exoplanet, check the star’s activity, ultraviolet output, age, and composition; the planet’s size, orbit, atmosphere, clouds, and surface assumptions; and the observations used to derive those properties. Stellar flares and photochemical reactions can alter an atmosphere without biology.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a Mars, ocean-world, or asteroid sample, ask whether the material is in place or transported, whether the instrument can distinguish minerals from organic compounds, and whether the observed feature could have formed after deposition. NASA’s Life Detection Knowledge Base organizes life-detection arguments around planetary environment and mission architecture for this reason: context determines what a signal means.
3. Ask whether the proposed signal is specific to life
A biosignature is useful only to the extent that nonliving processes struggle to imitate it. Many molecules associated with life can also form through volcanic chemistry, water-rock reactions, radiation, atmospheric photochemistry, or delivery by meteorites. Even a combination of gases can be ambiguous if the planet’s temperature, pressure, circulation, or stellar radiation permits an abiotic pathway.
Evaluate specificity in both directions:
- Biological plausibility: could a known or reasonable organism produce the feature under the stated conditions?
- Abiotic plausibility: can chemistry, geology, photochemistry, or surface processes produce the same feature at the measured abundance and location?
- Ambiguity: does the observation distinguish among those mechanisms, or does it merely fit several?
NASA’s Life Detection Ladder explicitly addresses specificity, ambiguity, false positives, false negatives, and detectability. Its ordering is environment-dependent, and NASA says the ladder is not a definitive final product or an endorsement of particular biosignatures or instruments.
4. Look for corroboration
Corroboration means independent observations that support the same interpretation. Independence matters: repeating the same data-processing step is not equivalent to measuring the feature with a different instrument, at a different wavelength, in a different sample, or through a separate mission.
Recommended Free Tools
Useful corroboration might include a related chemical disequilibrium, a spatial pattern that follows geological or environmental boundaries, isotopic information, repeated activity under changing conditions, or a second instrument that detects the same feature. Each item must still be interpreted in context; several observations sharing one unrecognized artifact do not form independent evidence.

The published exoplanet biosignature assessment framework by Catling and colleagues (2018, Astrobiology, volume 19, issue 6, pages 709–738; DOI 10.1089/ast.2017.1737) places stellar and planetary characterization, candidate-biosignature assessment, corroborating evidence, and false-positive exclusion within one probabilistic evaluation rather than treating a single feature as decisive.
5. Examine measurement limits and contamination controls
Every result has a detection threshold, background level, calibration uncertainty, and possible interference. Ask:
- What is the instrument’s sensitivity and detection limit for the claimed feature?
- How were calibration standards, blanks, and background signals handled?
- Could overlapping spectral lines, detector behavior, cosmic rays, or data processing create the appearance?
- For a sample, was the provenance documented and was terrestrial contamination controlled?
- Were positive and negative controls included, and were analysts blinded where practical?
NASA defines a false positive as a positive determination caused by contamination or by unintended interference with the detection method. Planetary-protection procedures address both forward contamination, in which Earth material reaches another world, and backward contamination, in which returned material could affect Earth. NASA’s planetary-protection standard page records a submission date of August 30, 2022 and a next five-year review date of August 30, 2027; those dates describe the standard’s review cycle, not a life-detection result.

Terrestrial organic compounds, laboratory reagents, handling materials, or memory effects in an instrument can mimic a chemical biosignature. 6. Match the wording to the confidence
Use the authors’ own level of certainty and preserve their qualifications. These phrases carry different meanings:
| Wording | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| “Could be consistent with life” | Biology is one compatible explanation. | That biology is more likely than abiotic explanations. |
| “Candidate biosignature” | A feature merits investigation as a possible life-related signal. | That the feature is unique to life or confirmed. |
| “Evidence supports” | The data favor an interpretation under stated assumptions. | That all alternatives have been excluded. |
| “Life detected” | A very strong conclusion that biological activity is the best explanation. | Nothing further; the claim still requires reproducibility and scrutiny. |
NASA describes its CoLD (Confidence of Life Detection) Scale, released in 2021, as a proof-of-concept framework for communicating life-detection results. It is intended to encourage informed communication in a subject vulnerable to sensational headlines, not to provide a universal yes-or-no cutoff. The scale should therefore be reported as a communication aid alongside the underlying measurements, assumptions, and uncertainties.

Could a signal have a nonbiological explanation?
Always test that possibility explicitly. Harman and Domagal-Goldman’s 2018 chapter on biosignature false positives states that “it is the astrobiology community’s responsibility to thoroughly exhaust all possibilities before we resort to ‘life’ as an explanation.” That principle is practical, not rhetorical: a life claim is only as strong as its comparison with realistic alternatives.
Build an alternative-explanation list before deciding what the signal means. Include pathways that are chemically ordinary under the target’s actual conditions, not only far-fetched scenarios. Then ask whether each pathway predicts the measured abundance, location, timing, and accompanying features.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Environmental fit | Does the biological or abiotic explanation work under the measured temperature, pressure, radiation, solvent, geology, and atmospheric composition? |
| Biological specificity | How often could the feature arise without life, and how ambiguous is the observation? |
| Corroboration | Do independent measurements support one interpretation? |
| Measurement reliability | Are sensitivity, background, calibration, interference, and sample handling adequate? |
| Alternative explanations | Have known abiotic pathways and less obvious instrumental or processing effects been examined? |
These axes are a decision aid, not a universal scorecard. A signal that is highly specific in one environment may be ambiguous in another. NASA notes that the features on its Life Detection Ladder depend on the environment and that the ladder is not definitive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why non-detection does not prove that life is absent
A null result can mean that the target is lifeless, but it can also mean that life is present beyond the method’s reach. NASA defines a false negative as failure to detect a factor that is actually present, for example because the signal is weak relative to background or below the instrument’s detection limit.
Before treating a non-detection as evidence against life, check the method’s coverage:
- Was the sampled location representative, or could life be patchy?
- Could organisms or their products be underground, shielded from radiation, or present only seasonally?
- Does the instrument detect the relevant molecule, structure, or activity at realistic concentrations?
- Could sample preparation destroy or transform the feature?
- Were the observation duration and timing long enough to capture the proposed activity?
A negative result narrows what is detectable under those conditions. It does not establish universal absence unless the observation has comprehensive coverage and a detection capability appropriate to the claim.

How to read claims about Mars, ocean worlds, and returned samples
Ancient or present-day Mars
Separate evidence for past water, organic chemistry, or energy sources from evidence of organisms. Geological habitability can be well supported while the biological question remains open. A rock texture or organic molecule requires provenance, mineralogical context, and an assessment of whether radiation, water-rock chemistry, or meteoritic delivery could explain it.
Ocean worlds and plumes
Plume particles or gases may provide access to subsurface material, but remote sampling still mixes sources and can alter them during ejection. A proposed biosignature should be tested against ocean chemistry, seafloor reactions, tidal heating, and transport from the interior to the observed plume.
Returned samples
Returned material allows more sensitive laboratory work but raises stricter provenance and contamination demands. A persuasive result should document collection conditions, seals and handling, blanks, controls, independent laboratories, and whether the feature occurs in the sample rather than in preparation materials.
How to evaluate an exoplanet atmosphere claim
- Check the star first. Review stellar activity, ultraviolet radiation, age, and spectrum because these control atmospheric chemistry and can create or destroy candidate gases.
- Check the planet’s basic parameters. Confirm the planet’s size, mass where available, orbit, equilibrium assumptions, and whether the atmosphere is actually detected rather than modeled from limited data.
- Inspect the spectrum and uncertainty. Look for the wavelength range, signal-to-noise, retrieval assumptions, cloud treatment, overlapping molecules, and whether alternative atmospheric models fit nearly as well.
- Test abiotic production. Ask whether photochemistry, volcanism, impact delivery, ocean-atmosphere reactions, or atmospheric escape can generate the same gas mixture.
- Seek corroboration. Prefer repeated observations, different instruments, or complementary gases and environmental indicators that point to one explanation.
- Read the authors’ caveats. A paper that calls a feature tentative or model-dependent should not be rewritten as a detection.
A practical checklist for readers and editors
- What exact observation is being reported?
- What target, location, sample, or atmospheric layer produced it?
- Which parts are measured and which are inferred?
- Is the feature specific to life under those conditions?
- What abiotic, geological, photochemical, contamination, or instrumental alternatives remain?
- What independent observations corroborate the interpretation?
- What are the detection limit, background, calibration, and uncertainty?
- How were sample provenance and terrestrial contamination controlled?
- Could a false negative explain a null result?
- What confidence words do the researchers use, and what limitations do they state?
- Does the conclusion say “habitable,” “candidate biosignature,” or “life detected,” and is that wording preserved accurately?
What a responsible conclusion looks like
A responsible report tells readers what changed in the evidence without pretending that uncertainty disappeared. It might say that a measurement identifies a candidate biosignature, that the signal is compatible with biology, and that additional observations are needed to distinguish biological from abiotic or instrumental explanations. It should also state when the evidence concerns habitability rather than inhabitants.
NASA’s current public position is that no clear signs of life beyond Earth have been detected. That statement can coexist with exciting observations: science advances by improving measurements, testing alternatives, and increasing corroboration until the biological interpretation is stronger than its competitors. The headline should follow that evidence, not outrun it.
