If you are asking how to evaluate satellite-communications stocks before buying AST SpaceMobile, start with evidence rather than the story. AST SpaceMobile is building a planned direct-to-device cellular network, but its SpaceMobile Service had not launched or generated service revenue in the latest filing available, the company still faced major deployment and financing requirements, and no current valuation conclusion can be made without refreshed market data.
What AST SpaceMobile is trying to build
AST SpaceMobile says its low Earth orbit BlueBird satellites are designed to connect directly to ordinary, unmodified mobile devices. The intended distribution model is wholesale: mobile network operators (MNOs) would offer access to their customers, with AST and the operators sharing revenue under their agreements. The company also pursues government applications and sells certain equipment, software and related services.

That makes AST different from a conventional satellite-internet provider that requires a dedicated terminal. The investment case depends on whether a space-based network can supplement terrestrial cellular coverage, whether operators can integrate it into their plans, and whether the resulting revenue can support the cost of building and launching a large constellation.
AST’s 2025 Form 10-K cautions: “We have a limited operating history and operate in a rapidly evolving industry, which makes it difficult to evaluate our business and future prospects and increases the risk of your investment.” Treat that as the company’s own risk disclosure, not as an independent prediction.

First, separate what has happened from what is still a target
A satellite launch, a successful deployment, a technical demonstration and a paid commercial network are different milestones. Track them separately instead of treating all progress as interchangeable.
Deployment history reported through August 2026
| Satellite or group | Reported event | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| BB6 | Deployed in February 2026 | A completed deployment, but not by itself proof of continuous commercial coverage |
| BB7 | Placed in a lower-than-planned orbit during an April 2026 launch and subsequently de-orbited | Evidence of launch and orbit-insertion risk |
| BB8–BB10 | Launched in June 2026 and deployed in July 2026 | Additional hardware in orbit; commissioning and network contribution still need to be tracked |
| BB11–BB13 | Launched in August 2026 | Launch completion does not establish usable service until deployment, testing and integration are complete |
| Early 2027 objective | Management targeted approximately 45 satellites, based on expected launch availability | A forward-looking target, not a realized constellation size |
Use later quarterly filings to check every target against actual launches, orbital deployments, commissioning and usable coverage. A rocket can reach orbit while a satellite later fails, enters an unsuitable orbit or cannot provide the planned capability. Even a functioning satellite may contribute intermittent rather than broad, continuous coverage while the constellation is incomplete.
Test whether technical demonstrations represent a service customers can use
AST’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q describes tests and calls with partners using unmodified smartphones, including a company-reported peak speed of 98.9 Mbps in one test. That is a demonstration result, not a typical customer speed, a guaranteed minimum, or evidence of continuous coverage.
For each new demonstration, ask five practical questions:

- Was the connection made with an ordinary, unmodified phone, and which model or network was used?
- How long did the connection last, and was it a controlled test or a moving user in normal conditions?
- What geographic area and satellite configuration were involved?
- Was the result a peak measurement or a distribution of typical speeds, latency and reliability?
- Could a paying customer access the capability through a commercial plan at that time?
The filing states that the planned SpaceMobile Service had not launched as of the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Therefore, demonstrations should be treated as technical validation steps. They do not establish subscriber demand, recurring service revenue or profitability.
Follow the path from partnerships to paying service
AST disclosed relationships with AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone/SatCo and Saudi Telecom Company, and said it had partnerships with more than 60 MNOs. A partnership count is useful context, but it is not a count of active subscribers or paying customers.
Four conversion gates
- Contract and spectrum access: Determine what each agreement actually provides: testing rights, distribution rights, spectrum access, purchase commitments, revenue sharing or another arrangement.
- Network and operator integration: Check whether the operator has completed technical integration, regulatory filings, billing setup and customer-support preparation.
- Commercial availability: Look for a launch date, eligible countries, supported devices, pricing and the conditions under which a customer can connect.
- Reported revenue and usage: Confirm that filings show recurring service revenue, subscriber or usage indicators, and cash collection rather than only a memorandum, milestone payment or equipment sale.
The Q2 filing makes an important distinction: recognized revenue included government-related performance obligations and sales of gateway equipment, software and related services to MNOs, while the planned SpaceMobile Service had not generated revenue. Do not classify those existing sources as proof that the future wholesale cellular service is operating.

Understand the constellation’s capital intensity
AST’s 2025 Form 10-K estimated average direct-material and launch costs of approximately $21 million to $23 million per Block 2 satellite for a constellation of more than 90 satellites. This is the company’s estimate for its stated planning case, not an independently verified total program budget.

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
A simple multiplication illustrates the scale: hardware and launch costs alone would be substantial for more than 90 satellites, before considering satellite operations, ground infrastructure, spectrum arrangements, insurance, engineering, testing, staffing, regulatory work, financing costs and replacement satellites. Do not turn the per-satellite estimate into a complete cost forecast.
Build an updated financing checklist
- Cash and restricted cash reported in the latest balance sheet
- Operating cash use and investing cash use over the latest quarters
- Capital expenditures and payments due under launch or manufacturing commitments
- Debt principal, interest rates, maturities, covenants and collateral
- Convertible securities, conversion prices and potential share issuance
- Recent equity issuance, at-the-market sales or other funding transactions
- Expected spending required to reach the next satellite and service milestones
The available material does not establish a current cash-runway calculation or quantify current dilution. Those figures must be calculated from the latest filings and financing disclosures before you make a claim about funding sufficiency or shareholder dilution.
Keep regulatory authorization, spectrum rights and service permission separate
The Q2 filing reports FCC authorization for a 248-satellite network. That authorization is significant, but it is not a global permission slip for commercial service.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Evaluate three separate gates in every market:
- Network authorization: permission for the satellite system and its operations.
- Spectrum rights: the legal right to use the relevant frequencies, often involving an MNO or another rights holder.
- Service permission: approval to provide the intended service in a particular country, territory or regulatory regime.
AST’s filing also describes spectrum rights obtained contractually and a spectrum-rights transaction with closing conditions. Examine the jurisdiction, frequency band, license holder, permitted use and remaining conditions for each arrangement. One FCC authorization does not establish that every intended market has spectrum, landing rights, device approval or permission to sell service.

Measure operating progress with a milestone scorecard
Create a dated spreadsheet or checklist and update it after every filing. Useful columns include:
- Satellite designation and launch date
- Launch vehicle and launch outcome
- Orbit achieved versus planned orbit
- Deployment and commissioning status
- Payload or network tests completed
- Geography and coverage demonstrated
- Operator integration status
- Commercial service date, if announced
- Revenue source associated with the milestone
- Original management target and actual result
Record misses as well as achievements. BB7’s loss after an unsuitable orbit illustrates why “launched” should not be a binary success field. Compare the approximately 45-satellite early-2027 objective with actual launch availability, manufacturing pace, deployment reliability and financing capacity. A target that slips is not automatically a failure of the long-term concept, but it changes the timing, cost and funding assumptions in an investment model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Read the financial statements by revenue source
Until the planned service is operating, headline revenue can obscure what the business is proving. Separate revenue into at least these categories:
- Future SpaceMobile Service connectivity sold through MNOs
- Government-related performance obligations
- Gateway equipment sales
- Software and related services sold to MNOs
For each category, examine whether revenue is recurring or one-time, recognized over time or at delivery, dependent on a small number of counterparties, and associated with positive gross margin and cash collection. Equipment or government revenue can help fund development, but it does not demonstrate that the consumer or enterprise connectivity model has achieved product-market fit.
Best Value
Use a disciplined framework for satellite-stock comparisons
If you compare AST with other satellite-communications companies, use the same operating axes for every company. Do not compare a planned direct-to-device network with a mature broadband, mobility or government business using only a share-price chart.
| Axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Product and market | Is the company pursuing direct-to-device cellular, broadband, mobility, government work or a combination? |
| Operating status | Is service commercially available, limited to demonstrations, or still in development? |
| Constellation execution | How many satellites are launched, deployed, commissioned and contributing to coverage? |
| Launch cadence | Are manufacturing and launches meeting dated targets, and what failures or delays have occurred? |
| Spectrum and regulation | Who controls the spectrum, what approvals exist, and which conditions remain? |
| Customers and contracts | Are relationships tests, distribution agreements, purchase commitments or active paid service? |
| Revenue quality | What portion is recurring service revenue versus equipment, government or milestone work? |
| Capital and financing | What spending, debt, convertibles, equity issuance and launch commitments are required? |
| Valuation basis | Are price, share count, enterprise value and financial periods dated and comparable? |
The available company filings do not provide an authoritative peer set or current valuation data for this comparison. Do not use an undated market capitalization, revenue multiple or price target. Refresh the share price, diluted share count, cash, debt and the relevant filing dates before calculating any multiple.
How to assess valuation without pretending to know the answer
A credible ASTS valuation analysis should use scenarios tied to operating milestones rather than a single forecast. Build at least three cases:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Execution case: satellite deployment, spectrum arrangements, operator integration and commercial launch occur close to management targets.
- Delay case: launches, commissioning or regulatory approvals take longer, increasing funding needs and postponing service revenue.
- Downside case: technical failures, weaker operator conversion, limited coverage or financing constraints reduce the scale or economics of the network.
For each case, state assumptions for satellite count, coverage, service launch timing, users or usage, wholesale pricing, revenue sharing, operating costs, capital expenditures and dilution. Discounted cash flow or revenue multiples are only as credible as those assumptions. A technical test or partnership announcement cannot substitute for customer and financial evidence.
Warning signs that deserve deeper checking
- Satellite counts are presented without distinguishing launched, deployed, commissioned and service-capable units.
- Peak test speed is described as a normal customer experience.
- Partnership totals are treated as active subscribers or recurring revenue.
- Equipment or government revenue is presented as proof of the future connectivity model.
- FCC network authorization is treated as universal spectrum or service approval.
- Per-satellite launch cost is treated as the entire constellation budget.
- Management targets are quoted without the target date or later outcome.
- Valuation uses a share price or market capitalization without a date and diluted share count.
- Financing capacity is asserted without reconciling cash, burn, debt, convertibles and commitments.
A practical pre-purchase workflow
- Read the latest 10-Q and 10-K. Start with the business description, risk factors, liquidity section, revenue notes, commitments and subsequent events.
- Build the satellite ledger. Enter each launch, orbit, deployment, commissioning event and failure with its date.
- Separate evidence levels. Label each item as a target, demonstration, regulatory approval, signed agreement, commercial launch or recognized recurring revenue.
- Map spectrum by geography. Identify the license holder, band, contractual right and unresolved condition for every intended market.
- Reconcile revenue. Determine whether reported revenue comes from SpaceMobile connectivity, government work, equipment, software or another source.
- Model funding. Update cash, burn, capital expenditure, debt, convertibles, equity issuance and launch commitments.
- Refresh valuation inputs. Use a dated price, diluted share count and current financial statements; calculate scenarios rather than relying on a headline multiple.
- Set an evidence-based decision rule. Decide which milestone would change your view, such as commercial availability in a defined market, recurring service revenue or a financing event on acceptable terms.
What the latest evidence does—and does not—establish
By the June 30, 2026 quarter, filed August 10, 2026, AST had made tangible deployment progress, reported technical demonstrations and disclosed a large MNO partnership network. It also had a reported FCC authorization for a 248-satellite network. At the same time, BB7 had been lost after an unsuitable orbit, approximately 45 satellites in early 2027 remained a target, and the planned SpaceMobile Service had not launched or generated revenue.
The central investment question is therefore execution: can AST convert launches and demonstrations into reliable, permitted service distributed by operators, while financing a capital-intensive constellation? The filings support a structured way to monitor that question, but they do not establish that the stock is cheap, expensive or suitable for any particular investor. A responsible decision requires current market data and the next relevant filings.
