The right choice depends on where your players live, whether you sell premium games, subscriptions, downloadable content or transferable virtual items, who will be the merchant of record, and how much payment, tax, fraud and support work your team can operate.
Build a shortlist by comparing providers on the same transaction assumptions, then validate it with a controlled pilot. Compare the complete cost, available payment methods in each target country, approval and false-decline rates, game-specific fraud controls, integration effort, settlement and reconciliation, and the responsibilities that remain with your studio after signing.

Start with the business model, not the provider logo
A payment platform that works well for a small PC game sold through a direct web store may be a poor fit for a live-service game with subscriptions, creator payouts and a large volume of low-value in-game purchases. Write down the commercial model before requesting quotes. Otherwise, every provider will price and scope a different product, making the proposals impossible to compare.

- Premium game purchases and downloadable content.
- One-time in-game currency, cosmetic items and other virtual goods.
- Recurring products such as battle passes, memberships or subscriptions.
- Digital goods that can be transferred between players or accounts.
- Creator, esports, marketplace or partner payouts.
- Refunds, partial refunds, promotional credits and chargeback exposure.
Tell each provider whether the game includes trading, cash-out, prizes, randomized items or any other mechanic that could affect underwriting. A provider’s public gaming page does not prove that every game mechanic is approved. Obtain written confirmation for the exact title, entity and countries you intend to operate in.

Record your transaction profile
Prepare one consistent data sheet for every quote:
- Monthly transaction count and gross payment volume.
- Average and median basket value, plus the share of very small transactions.
- Card, wallet, bank-transfer and other local-method percentages.
- Player countries, merchant-entity country and desired settlement currencies.
- Expected subscription share and renewal frequency.
- Refund rate, historical chargeback rate and known fraud incidents.
- Peak launch or event-day volume and expected growth.
Ask vendors to price this exact mix. A percentage quoted for one country, method or merchant category cannot be transplanted into another market.
Decide whether you need a PSP, a merchant of record, or both
The most consequential question is who legally and operationally sells to the player. A payment service provider (PSP) supplies payment infrastructure while your company generally remains the seller. A merchant-of-record (MoR) arrangement can take on specified seller responsibilities, but the scope depends on the agreement and the markets covered.
PSP model
In a PSP arrangement, your studio normally owns the customer relationship and remains responsible for the obligations assigned to the seller. The provider may supply checkout, tokenization, routing, fraud tools, refunds, reporting and settlement, but read the contract rather than assuming those services transfer liability.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
MoR model
An MoR can be attractive when your team does not want to operate tax, customer-support, refund and dispute processes in every market. Verify exactly what the provider handles, where it is the seller, and what remains with your company. Country coverage, product eligibility and contract language matter more than the label “managed payments.”
Example: responsibilities in an Xsolla PSP arrangement
Xsolla’s PSP page presents the developer as merchant of record and Xsolla as the payment service provider. The page lists infrastructure such as checkout, tokenization, refunds, indirect-tax calculation, reporting, reconciliation and global payouts, while stating that the developer retains responsibilities including fraud monitoring, customer support, refunds and chargebacks, and tax management. Treat this as a model to investigate, not as a universal description of every Xsolla contract.
For each proposed market, ask:
- Who is named as seller or merchant of record on the receipt and terms?
- Who calculates, collects and remits indirect taxes?
- Who answers “where is my purchase?” and refund requests?
- Who funds refunds, chargebacks and fraud losses?
- Who supplies evidence in a dispute, and by what deadline?
- Who owns player data, tokens and transaction history if you leave?
Map coverage to the players you actually have
Headline method counts are useful for generating questions, not for selecting a provider. A method may be listed globally but unavailable to your merchant entity, game platform or target country. Confirm live availability, currency presentation, local acquiring and settlement for every important player market.
| Provider page claim | Published figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Adyen gaming page | 200+ payment methods and 150+ currencies | Ask which methods and currencies are enabled for your entity and countries; the counting scope is not defined as identical to other providers. |
| Xsolla product page | 700+ payment methods, 130+ currencies and 200+ geographies | Request a country-by-country matrix and identify which methods support your products, refunds and settlement needs. |
These are vendor-published figures with different counting conventions. They are not a like-for-like performance ranking. Require a written matrix showing, for each player country, the payment methods, processing currency, settlement currency, local acquiring route, refund capability and expected launch date.

Prioritize method fit over method count
Rank countries by revenue and conversion risk. A provider with fewer total methods may be stronger if it supports the wallet, bank method or local card scheme that dominates your highest-value market. Conversely, a broad catalog is valuable when your audience is genuinely distributed across many regions. Ask whether a method is available in the checkout you plan to use, not merely in a provider’s global catalog.
Check currency and settlement behavior
Clarify whether prices can be displayed in local currency, which currency is used for authorization, how conversion is calculated, and which currencies can settle to your bank account. Ask about settlement timing, minimum payout thresholds, reserves, holds and the treatment of negative balances after refunds or disputes.

Compare total cost with one shared model
Do not compare only a headline percentage. Build a monthly cost model that includes every fee triggered by your payment mix and operating choices.
Fee categories to include
- Fixed processing fee per transaction.
- Payment-method fee for cards, wallets, bank methods and other local options.
- Cross-border or local-acquiring charges.
- Currency-conversion spread or fee.
- Subscription, tokenization and stored-credential charges.
- Fraud-tool, authentication, dispute and chargeback fees.
- Refund fees or non-refundable processing components.
- Managed tax, support or merchant-of-record charges.
- Payout, reserve and reconciliation costs.
- Implementation, account, minimum-volume or early-termination fees.
Adyen’s UK pricing page describes a fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee, with other products priced separately. It also says additional rates of up to 3% may apply to gaming, gambling, travel and financial services. The page is UK-focused; do not reuse one of its displayed examples for a different country or merchant entity. Request a merchant-specific quote and ask the provider to list every add-on.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a transparent calculation
For each scenario, calculate:
net proceeds = gross payments − processing and method fees − conversion and cross-border costs − refunds − dispute and fraud losses − taxes or MoR charges − payout and other platform fees
Run at least three cases: normal month, launch or event peak, and a high-refund or high-dispute month. Keep assumptions identical across vendors. Show both the effective cost as a percentage of gross volume and the cash amount, because fixed fees disproportionately affect low-value purchases.
Ask about non-price economics
Request the reserve formula, release schedule, right to suspend payouts, acceptable-use rules, volume bands and price-change notice period. A lower nominal rate is not necessarily cheaper if the provider’s method coverage forces more cross-border transactions or if operational work requires additional staff.
Evaluate authorization, checkout and recovery
Conversion depends on more than whether a card form loads. Compare local payment presentation, intelligent routing, retries, authentication, saved credentials, error messages and the ability to recover a failed renewal without creating duplicate charges.

Questions for the demo and technical review
- Can the checkout localize language, currency, address fields and payment-method order?
- How are retries scheduled for failed subscriptions, and can your team tune the rules?
- How are authentication challenges surfaced on web, mobile and embedded flows?
- Can a player switch payment methods without losing a subscription or entitlement?
- How are duplicate callbacks, delayed confirmations and asynchronous methods handled?
- Can your analytics separate issuer declines, provider errors, authentication failures and fraud blocks?
Stripe’s gaming page describes Smart Retries, local payment methods, subscriptions, in-game items and direct web-store checkout. It reports that Stripe Billing recovered 55% of failed payments in 2025. That is a Stripe-reported Billing figure, not a forecast for your game or a comparison with another provider. Ask for a pilot measurement using your own renewal mix.
Adyen’s gaming materials emphasize intelligent routing, local acquiring, authentication and player-preferred methods. Ask for baseline and measured approval rates by country, method, issuer region and transaction type rather than accepting one blended rate.
Treat fraud controls as part of the game economy
Payment fraud can become an inventory and account-security problem when a purchase creates a transferable or instantly consumable item. A provider should be evaluated alongside your own account, entitlement and economy controls.

Threats to test
Stripe’s gaming fraud guidance, updated April 19, 2026, identifies patterns including small-transaction card testing, stolen-card purchases of transferable items, account takeover, friendly fraud and promotion abuse. Use these categories to build test cases with your security and live-operations teams.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Card testing: many small authorization attempts can damage approval rates and trigger issuer scrutiny. Test velocity limits, device and account signals, and automated blocking.
- Stolen-card purchases: a fraudster may buy a transferable item and move it before the legitimate cardholder disputes the payment. Test delayed delivery, transfer restrictions and reversals.
- Account takeover: a valid saved payment method may be abused after an account compromise. Test step-up checks for new devices, unusual locations and high-risk purchases.
- Friendly fraud: a player may dispute a legitimate purchase or claim that a digital item was not received. Test entitlement logs and dispute evidence workflows.
- Promotion abuse: multiple accounts or payment instruments may exploit introductory offers. Test identity, device, velocity and offer-eligibility signals.
Measure the cost of false declines
Ask providers to show approval, fraud-block and chargeback rates separately. A rule that eliminates fraud by rejecting legitimate players can lower revenue and increase support contacts. Compare how rules are tuned, whether your team can review decisions, and how quickly a mistaken block can be corrected.
Clarify dispute ownership
Determine who receives the dispute notice, who writes the response, who supplies transaction and entitlement evidence, and who pays if the case is lost. Confirm whether refunds can be issued through the same API and how a refunded or charged-back item is revoked in your game.
Check monetization and payout features
List every payment lifecycle your game needs and have the provider demonstrate it in a sandbox. A platform that supports one-time checkout may still lack the subscription, tokenization or payout behavior your roadmap requires.
| Requirement | Evidence to request | Failure to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| One-time purchases | Successful, declined, refunded and duplicated transaction flows | Entitlement granted without a confirmed payment |
| Subscriptions and battle passes | Renewal, retry, card-update, cancellation and grace-period behavior | Players losing access after a recoverable renewal failure |
| Stored credentials | Token portability, account updater behavior and consent records | Being unable to migrate recurring customers |
| Virtual goods | Fraud review, delayed delivery, reversal and transfer controls | Irreversible delivery of disputed items |
| Creator or partner payouts | Eligibility, currencies, reporting and reconciliation | Manual spreadsheets that cannot match payouts to sales |
| Refunds and chargebacks | API, dashboard, webhooks, evidence and entitlement reversal | Refunds that do not update the player’s balance |
Stripe describes creator payouts and a Managed Payments option that includes tax collection and remittance, fraud and risk management, dispute handling and customer support. Confirm the countries, products and contractual scope rather than assuming every feature is included in every account.
Assess integration and day-to-day operations
The cheapest integration is the one your team can maintain during a launch, outage or dispute surge. Evaluate the complete path from game client to backend, payment provider, entitlement service, finance ledger and support console.
Technical checklist
- Supported APIs, SDKs, game engines, mobile platforms and web checkout modes.
- Server-to-server confirmation and signed webhooks for payment state changes.
- Idempotency controls for retries and network failures.
- Sandbox coverage for every payment method and decline scenario you need to test.
- Tokenization and migration support for stored payment credentials.
- Refund, partial-refund, cancellation and subscription-management endpoints.
- Logs, dashboards, exports and role-based access for engineering, finance and support.
- Versioning, deprecation notices, status communication and incident support.
Xsolla’s developer documentation provides an example of the integration material to inspect. Compare the quality of API references, sample code, test credentials, webhook documentation and escalation paths, not just the number of listed features.
Reconciliation requirements
Ask whether reports can reconcile gross transactions, fees, taxes, refunds, disputes, settlements and game entitlements at a common transaction identifier. Finance should be able to tie a provider payout to the bank statement and to the game’s internal ledger without hand-built transformations. Obtain sample reports before signing.
Support and resilience
Clarify support hours, severity definitions, response targets, launch assistance, incident communication and escalation to an engineering contact. Ask how the provider behaves during an outage: can you fail over, queue orders safely, or switch to another checkout without losing subscription tokens?

Use provider pages as evidence, not as a ranking
The following summaries identify questions raised by public materials. They do not establish that one provider will produce the best result for every studio.
Stripe
Stripe’s gaming offering covers one-time purchases, subscriptions, in-game items, local payment methods, in-app payment and direct web-store checkout. It also describes Smart Retries, Radar, Billing, creator payouts and Managed Payments. Validate country coverage, pricing, merchant-of-record scope and game-mechanic approval for your account. Treat all performance figures on the page as Stripe-reported claims.
Adyen
Adyen’s gaming page highlights intelligent routing, local acquiring, player-preferred methods, authentication, fraud detection, 200+ payment methods and 150+ currencies. Its UK pricing page describes fixed processing plus method fees and warns that additional rates up to 3% may apply to gaming and certain other categories. Confirm the quote, local methods, settlement and contract for your merchant entity.
Xsolla
Xsolla’s PSP page sets out a developer-as-MoR model with listed checkout, tokenization, refund, tax-calculation, reporting, reconciliation and payout capabilities, while retaining several seller responsibilities with the developer. Its product page advertises 700+ methods, 130+ currencies and 200+ geographies. Check the exact methods, countries and responsibilities in your agreement.
On August 14, 2025, Xsolla announced an Adyen partnership for Xsolla PSP. The announcement described Hong Kong as the initial eligible merchant-registration location and phased expansion into Europe, Singapore and the United States as regional licenses were secured. Read the dated announcement, then confirm present eligibility directly because rollout conditions can change.
Build a weighted scorecard
Turn the requirements into a scorecard before demos so a persuasive presentation does not outweigh a critical gap. Weight each category according to your business, score every provider against documented evidence, and record unknowns separately.
| Decision axis | What to score | Questions to put in the request for proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Business model and MoR | PSP or MoR scope, tax, support, refunds, disputes and compliance responsibility | Who is seller of record in each market, and which responsibilities transfer under the contract? |
| Market reach | Countries, currencies, local acquiring and preferred methods | Which methods are live for our entity and player markets, and in what currencies can we settle? |
| Total cost | Processing, method, cross-border, conversion, dispute, fraud, subscription and optional fees | What is the all-in cost for our volume, basket, mix, refund rate and countries? |
| Authorization and checkout | Routing, retries, authentication, localization and friction | What approval rates can we measure by market and method, and how are retries handled? |
| Risk and disputes | Card testing, takeover, friendly fraud, chargebacks and transferable goods | Which signals are available, how are false declines measured, and who submits evidence? |
| Monetization | One-time, recurring, tokenization, refunds and payouts | Can the system support our subscription rules, stored credentials and partner payments? |
| Integration and operations | APIs, SDKs, reporting, reconciliation, support and resilience | What is the migration effort, and can transactions reconcile to our game and finance ledgers? |
Use “not established” rather than guessing when a vendor will not provide a number or contractual answer. An unresolved requirement should lower confidence even if the marketing page sounds strong.
Run a controlled pilot before committing
A pilot should compare the same payment mix and player markets, not whichever traffic is easiest to route. Keep game pricing, fraud rules, checkout design and support procedures documented so the result is interpretable.
- Select representative traffic. Include your largest countries, major payment methods, low-value purchases, subscriptions and peak periods.
- Define success metrics. Track authorization, completed checkout, renewal recovery, false-decline rate, fraud loss, chargeback rate, refund time, support contacts and effective cost.
- Instrument the full funnel. Log provider response codes, authentication outcomes, retries, entitlement grants, refunds and settlement identifiers.
- Test adverse cases deliberately. Use sandbox cards and approved test scenarios for declines, duplicate callbacks, delayed methods, refunds, disputes and account-risk events.
- Reconcile money and entitlements. Match provider reports to your ledger and verify that every refund or chargeback changes game access correctly.
- Review by country and method. A blended global result can hide a serious failure in a key market.
- Set a decision threshold. Document the minimum approval, maximum effective cost, acceptable fraud loss and required support response before reviewing results.
Do not treat a vendor’s case-study uplift or recovery percentage as your forecast. Even the 55% failed-payment recovery figure published by Stripe is specific to Stripe Billing in 2025 and does not describe another provider or merchant.
Best Value
Negotiate the contract and an exit plan
Before launch, obtain written answers on the issues that are expensive to discover later:
- Approved products, game mechanics, countries and sales channels.
- Complete fee schedule, volume tiers and price-change notice.
- Settlement timing, reserves, holds, negative-balance rights and payout currencies.
- Ownership and portability of customer, token and transaction data.
- Fraud, dispute, refund and tax responsibilities by market.
- Service levels, incident notices, support escalation and audit rights.
- Termination notice, data export, token migration and transition assistance.
- Rules for account suspension and the process for appealing a block.
If the provider will be your MoR in some countries but a PSP in others, document the boundary in a country matrix. Your support, finance and legal teams need to know which policy and workflow applies to each player.
Common evaluation mistakes
Choosing the largest method count
Global counts do not show whether the methods are live for your entity or useful to your players. Require a market-specific matrix.
Comparing advertised rates from different countries
Fees depend on geography, method, merchant category and optional products. Model your own mix and request a written quote.
Confusing PSP and MoR obligations
A provider can process a payment while your studio still handles tax, refunds, disputes and support. Read the responsibility schedule in the contract.
Optimizing fraud loss without measuring conversion
Fraud rules can block legitimate players. Track false declines and approval by method, not only the number of prevented fraud attempts.
Testing checkout but not the game economy
For transferable or consumable goods, test delayed delivery, reversal, account takeover and chargeback handling. Payment success is not the same as safe fulfillment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring reconciliation until launch
Require sample settlement and dispute reports early. If finance cannot tie money to entitlements in a test environment, production volume will magnify the problem.
A practical decision rule
Select the provider that meets every non-negotiable requirement in your highest-value markets, offers a contractually clear responsibility model, and produces the best measured net result in a controlled pilot. If two providers are close, favor the one with portable data and tokens, transparent settlement, stronger operational support and a credible migration path. Revisit the decision when your countries, payment mix, subscription share or game mechanics change.
