Short answer: Nike’s turnaround is not yet established. Revenue stabilized in fiscal 2026 after a steep decline, but fell again in fiscal 2027’s first quarter. Margins improved modestly, while the latest quarter’s increase had specific cost drivers; a much larger fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter jump was heavily affected by an expected tariff recovery. Inventory was flat year over year at fiscal 2026 year-end, then rose sequentially by August 2026. Read the measures together and compare like periods.
Start with the comparison that answers the question
Nike’s fiscal year ends May 31. Fiscal 2027 Q1 ended August 31, 2026. Revenue and gross margin describe activity over a period; inventory is a balance on a particular date. A quarter-to-quarter revenue comparison, a full-year margin comparison, and an inventory balance at one date are not interchangeable evidence of a trend.

Nike reports revenue both as reported and on a currency-neutral basis. Currency-neutral comparisons apply the exchange rates from the prior-year comparative period to remove foreign-exchange translation effects. When both measures are available, use both: the reported figure is what Nike recorded in dollars, while the currency-neutral rate helps distinguish underlying change from exchange-rate effects.
Revenue: stabilization gave way to another quarterly decline
| Period | Revenue | Reported change | Currency-neutral change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiscal 2025 | $46.3 billion | Down 10% | Down 9% |
| Fiscal 2026 | $46.4 billion | Flat | Down 2% |
| Fiscal 2027 Q1, ended August 31, 2026 | $11.2 billion | Down 4% year over year | Down 5% year over year |
The fiscal 2026 total was nearly unchanged in reported dollars after fiscal 2025’s sharp contraction, but the currency-neutral result still declined. The latest quarter’s year-over-year fall means the annual stabilization had not yet become sustained growth. A single quarter cannot establish whether that decline is temporary or persistent; subsequent comparable quarters matter.

Look beneath the consolidated total
Fiscal 2026 wholesale revenue rose to $27.5 billion from $25.9 billion in fiscal 2025, up 4% currency-neutral. NIKE Direct moved the other way: $17.7 billion versus $18.8 billion, down 8% currency-neutral. That split suggests the annual total concealed divergent channel results.
In fiscal 2027 Q1, wholesale revenue was $6.8 billion, down 1% currency-neutral, while NIKE Direct was $4.1 billion, down 9% currency-neutral. Digital sales declined 13% currency-neutral. Wholesale had helped the prior full-year comparison, but its latest result was also slightly negative; it would be premature to describe it as a continuing recovery.

Check the regions and brands
Fiscal 2027 Q1 performance varied substantially by market. North America revenue increased 2% currency-neutral, with wholesale up 9% and NIKE Direct down 6%. EMEA declined 5%, while Greater China declined 26% currency-neutral. Converse revenue fell 28% currency-neutral.

Nike said negative impacts from Greater China and Converse were expected to continue throughout fiscal 2027. These areas therefore remain meaningful counterweights to better performance elsewhere, particularly North America. Consolidated revenue alone can hide that concentration.

Margins: assess the drivers, not just the percentage
Fiscal 2025 gross margin fell 190 basis points to 42.7%. Nike cited higher discounts, channel-mix changes, and higher inventory-obsolescence reserves, partly offset by lower product costs. Fiscal 2026 gross margin rose 20 basis points to 42.9%—an improvement, but a modest one.
Fiscal 2027 Q1 gross margin was 42.8%, up 60 basis points year over year. Nike identified lower warehousing and logistics costs as the largest stated contributor, adding 90 basis points. Higher other costs, a lower NIKE Brand average selling price, and lower Converse margin partly offset that benefit. The headline margin increase was therefore not a uniform improvement across the business.

Do not use Q4 FY26 as a run-rate margin
Fiscal 2026 Q4 gross margin reached 49.2%, up 890 basis points year over year. Nike attributed approximately 900 basis points to the expected recovery of IEEPA tariffs. That specific benefit makes the quarter’s reported margin unsuitable as a baseline for recurring operating performance. Q4 revenue was down 1% reported and 4% currency-neutral, another reason not to read the margin figure in isolation.
For each margin change, ask whether Nike attributes it to discounts, selling prices, product or channel mix, costs, foreign exchange, or a one-time effect. A gain from durable cost or pricing improvement has a different implication from one driven by a temporary recovery or a favorable mix shift. The percentage alone does not identify which kind of improvement occurred.

Inventory: separate the balance date from the direction
| Balance date | Inventory | Comparison | Nike’s stated explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 31, 2026 | $7.5 billion | Flat year over year versus May 31, 2025 | Increased units offset by product mix |
| August 31, 2026 | $7.8 billion | Up 5% from May 31, 2026 | Primarily product-mix shifts |
The August increase is sequential—from the fiscal year-end balance—not a year-over-year comparison. The official figures cited here do not establish an August year-over-year comparison. Keep the date and basis attached whenever describing the change.
Total inventory dollars alone do not reveal sell-through, product age, or whether stock is appropriately positioned by product and geography. Nike’s explanations also distinguish unit changes from product mix: the May year-over-year balance was flat because higher units were offset by mix, while the later sequential increase was primarily attributed to mix. Neither balance by itself proves inventory is cleared, excessive, or normalized.
A practical test for whether the turnaround is working
Use a multi-report checklist rather than treating one favorable metric as a verdict:

- Channels: Track wholesale and NIKE Direct separately; within Direct, note Digital where disclosed.
- Geography and brands: Check whether growth is broad-based or concentrated, especially given the recent weakness in Greater China and Converse.
- Gross margin: Read the stated drivers and identify unusual or non-recurring benefits before interpreting a higher percentage as operating progress.
- Inventory: Compare balances taken on like dates and distinguish year-over-year from sequential changes; include unit-versus-mix explanations when Nike gives them.
- Persistence: Look for improvement across consecutive reports and multiple parts of the business, not just one high-margin quarter or one movement in inventory dollars.
This framework is an analytical way to read the metrics Nike reports, not company guidance. Nike CEO Elliott Hill described fiscal 2026 actions as intended to strengthen the company’s foundation and reposition it for long-term growth; that is management’s characterization of its actions, not evidence by itself that the turnaround has succeeded. The reported results remain mixed: fiscal 2026 revenue stabilized, but Q1 FY27 revenue declined, Direct remained weaker than wholesale, and the latest inventory balance rose from year-end.
