Evaluate a long-horizon agent as an experimental-design problem, not as a leaderboard lookup. First state the capability you are claiming—sample-efficient learning, generalization, reliable workflow completion, or multi-agent coordination. Then choose tasks that expose that capability, separate training from held-out conditions, report learning curves as well as final outcomes, preserve evidence of partial progress, and publish the protocol closely enough that another lab can interpret the result.
A score is evidence about a particular task distribution, environment version, model, budget, rollout procedure, and scoring rule. It is not a universal measure of long-horizon competence.

Start with the capability claim
The benchmark should answer a sentence you can write before running the experiment. “Our policy learns quickly from limited interaction” requires a different design from “our agent completes a 40-step household workflow reliably.” A language-model agent operating a text world, a visual computer-use agent, and a group of collaborating agents may all be called long-horizon systems, but their failure modes and valid metrics differ.
Four claims that are often confused
- Learning efficiency: How much interaction or training budget is needed to reach a specified performance level?
- Generalization: Does the trained policy work on unseen levels, tasks, layouts, or task variants?
- Long-horizon reliability: How often does the agent complete an extended workflow, and where do failures occur?
- Coordination: Can multiple agents divide work, communicate, and produce a better joint outcome than they could independently?
Write the claim with the agent class, task family, and operating conditions. For example: “A single language-model policy learns ALFWorld long tasks more efficiently than the baseline under the same rollout budget,” or “A computer-use agent completes held-out office workflows with fewer than 500 tool calls.” This wording prevents a benchmark selected for one property from being used as evidence for another.

Choose a benchmark whose structure matches the claim
Benchmarks are complementary instruments rather than interchangeable tests. Procgen was designed to standardize end-to-end training and rollout evaluation for sample efficiency and generalization. ALFWorld, WebShop, and ScienceWorld support long-horizon language-agent experiments. OSWorld 2.0 targets computer-use workflows, and AgentWorld targets multi-agent collaboration. A strong evaluation can use more than one of these, but it should not merge their scores into a single “long-horizon” number.
Procgen for sample efficiency and generalization
The NeurIPS 2020 Procgen benchmark was created around two explicit dimensions: how efficiently an agent learns and how well it generalizes. Training levels and held-out levels make the split visible. This is useful when your claim concerns transfer to unseen procedural variation. It is not a universal test of language reasoning, computer-use reliability, or real-world workflow execution. As Mohanty and coauthors wrote, “Generalization remains one of the most fundamental challenges in deep reinforcement learning, and yet we do not have enough benchmarks to measure the progress of the community on Generalization in Reinforcement Learning.”
ALFWorld, WebShop, and ScienceWorld for language-agent training
These environments expose an agent to sequential language-mediated decisions, where early actions can determine whether a later goal remains achievable. The BEACON study evaluates reinforcement-learning training in all three, rather than claiming that they exhaust long-horizon tasks. Its implementation identifies environment-provided milestone signals: trial_id for ALFWorld, milestone_achieved for WebShop, and subgoal_completed for ScienceWorld.

The BEACON repository, for example, lists a Python version of 3.10 or earlier for its WebShop setup. Use the repository’s current instructions and dependency versions when reproducing the experiment instead of treating those details as timeless requirements.
OSWorld 2.0 for computer-use workflows
OSWorld 2.0 describes 108 long-horizon computer-use workflows spanning everyday and professional tasks. The project reports that 69.6% of tasks take skilled human users more than one hour, with a median human completion time of about 1.6 hours. In the named Claude Opus 4.7 setting, tasks required an average of 318 tool calls. Those figures describe the benchmark and that stated agent configuration; they are not properties of every computer-use system.
Its primary binary-completion metric uses a 500-step limit. The project page reports 20.6% completion and a 54.8% partial score for Claude Opus 4.8 under its stated maximum-thinking and batched-tool-call configuration. Binary completion and partial score answer different questions, so do not substitute one for the other.
AgentWorld for multi-agent collaboration
AgentWorld is an adjacent evaluation example for coordination, not a substitute for a single-agent RL benchmark. Its September 2026 preprint describes 100 human-annotated tasks plus 100 augmented variants in an MMORPG sandbox. Tasks require 3 to 20 agents to coordinate over more than 50 interaction rounds. The authors add a Causal Collaboration Effectiveness measure alongside binary task success and report 52.0% task success for the best tested model in that setting.

WebWorld for web-agent simulation breadth
WebWorld presents a large-scale world model for web-agent training and WebWorld-Bench. Its evaluation spans nine dimensions and simulated web interactions exceeding 30 steps. Treat it as evidence that web-agent evaluation can cover several dimensions, not as proof that one reinforcement-learning protocol is optimal.
Design training and test splits that reveal generalization
If generalization is part of the claim, reserve conditions before training begins. Hold out levels, task templates, layouts, websites, or combinations of objects that are not used for policy updates, hyperparameter selection, or repeated prompt tuning. Report training and held-out results in separate columns and plots.
Prevent tuning leakage
- Define the holdout list or generation rule before the final run.
- Keep evaluation episodes out of replay buffers, demonstrations, reward-model fitting, and prompt selection.
- Record whether developers inspected failed holdout trajectories and changed the agent afterward.
- If a holdout was used for debugging, relabel it as development data and create a fresh test split.
For procedural environments such as Procgen, report the number and identity of training and test levels. For language or workflow benchmarks, report task composition and any train, development, and test partition. A single aggregate score can conceal memorization of templates or layouts.
Use matched difficulty, not only matched counts
A test set with the same number of tasks as training is not automatically comparable. Describe horizon length, branching choices, observation modality, tool availability, and failure penalties. If test tasks are intentionally harder, state that design and avoid calling the difference pure generalization.
Measure learning behavior, not only terminal success
Long trajectories create a credit-assignment problem: an agent may make many correct early decisions and still receive a failure signal at the end. A final success rate is necessary for a verifiable task, but it cannot show whether learning was efficient or where progress stopped.
Primary outcome
Define the main outcome mathematically or procedurally. State whether “success” means an environment-verified terminal state, a human judgment, a reward threshold, or a combination. Explain tie-breaking, invalid actions, timeouts, retries, and how partial completion is converted into a score.
Learning curves and budget
Plot performance against interaction samples, environment steps, trajectories, updates, or another budget that is held constant across methods. Report the budget required to reach a chosen threshold, area under the learning curve, and final performance at the prespecified budget when those quantities are meaningful. A method that finishes higher after ten times the interaction may not be more sample-efficient.

Milestones and partial progress
Use verified subgoals when terminal rewards are sparse. A milestone can be an environment event such as placing the correct object, completing a navigation segment, or satisfying a prerequisite in a workflow. Explain the event definition, whether milestones can be completed out of order, and how repeated or contradictory events are handled.
Recommended Free Tools
BEACON is motivated by two long-horizon RL problems described by Wang and coauthors: credit misattribution, where correct early actions can be penalized after a terminal failure, and sample inefficiency, where successful trajectories are scarce. Its approach partitions trajectories at milestone boundaries, shapes rewards within segments, and estimates advantages at both trajectory and segment scales. The lesson for evaluation is not that milestone shaping is universally correct; it is that a binary endpoint should be supplemented by an interpretable progress signal when the task structure supports one.
Reliability and variance
Report completion frequency across independent episodes and variation across runs. Include failures caused by timeouts, invalid actions, environment errors, and model refusals when they occur. Mean reward alone can hide a policy that succeeds spectacularly on a few runs and fails routinely elsewhere.
Use a metric set tailored to the task
There is no universal scorecard. Select metrics whose relationship to the capability claim is defensible and state why each one is included.
| Evaluation axis | Useful measures | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| Outcome | Binary completion, verified reward, partial-progress score | Did the agent achieve the stated objective, and how far did it get when it did not? |
| Learning efficiency | Interaction samples, training steps, budget to threshold, area under curve | How quickly does performance improve? |
| Generalization | Held-out task, level, layout, or task-type performance | Does the learned behavior transfer beyond tuned conditions? |
| Horizon and reliability | Task length, completion frequency, timeout rate, run-to-run variation | How dependable is the agent over extended sequences? |
| Operational cost | Tool calls, environment steps, runtime, tokens, or monetary cost | What resources are consumed for each outcome? |
| Attribution | Milestone completion, subgoal accuracy, segment-level advantage or reward | Where did progress occur, and where did credit assignment fail? |
Do not report an operational-cost metric unless the measurement boundary is identical across systems. For example, count tool calls consistently, decide whether failed calls count, and state whether reasoning tokens or external API latency are included.
Publish the protocol so results can be interpreted
Jordan and coauthors observe that “Performance evaluations are critical for quantifying algorithmic advances in reinforcement learning.” A result is only useful when readers can tell what was evaluated and under which conditions. Include the following details in the paper, report, or benchmark card.
Environment and task definition
- Benchmark and environment name, release or version, and any local modifications.
- Task inventory, horizon distribution, observation and action spaces, available tools, and termination rules.
- Training, development, and held-out test composition, including how variants were generated.
- Reward implementation, milestone definitions, invalid-action handling, and timeout limits.
Agent and training configuration
- Policy or model identifier and relevant checkpoint, architecture, tokenizer, and inference settings.
- Training data, demonstrations, replay data, external tools, and interaction budget.
- Rollout procedure, exploration settings, context limits, retry policy, and concurrency.
- Number of independent seeds or runs and the rule used to select checkpoints.
Scoring and uncertainty
- Exact aggregation method: mean, median, success rate, confidence interval, or another summary.
- Per-run results or uncertainty estimates where available.
- Whether evaluators were blinded, human-annotated, automatically verified, or both.
- Code, configuration, dependency versions, and instructions for reproducing the reported split.
When a detail is unavailable, label it as not stated rather than silently assuming equivalence. Two percentages are not cleanly comparable if one uses a different task split, model setting, rollout limit, or scoring implementation.

Read benchmark examples without turning them into a leaderboard
The following results illustrate why scope and protocol must travel with every number.
| Benchmark or study | Reported result | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| BEACON on ALFWorld long tasks | 92.9% success for BEACON versus 53.5% for GRPO; effective sample utilization 82.0% versus 23.7% (Wang et al., 2026) | A result in that paper’s ALFWorld setting, split, implementation, and training protocol; not a universal baseline for every implementation. |
| OSWorld 2.0 | 108 workflows; 69.6% take skilled users more than one hour; about 1.6 hours median human time; 318 average tool calls in the named Claude Opus 4.7 setting | Evidence of computer-use task length and operational demand, not a direct RL comparison. |
| OSWorld 2.0, Claude Opus 4.8 configuration | 20.6% binary completion and 54.8% partial score at the 500-step metric | Two different outcome views under the project page’s stated maximum-thinking and batched-tool-call setup. |
| AgentWorld | 100 human-annotated tasks plus 100 augmented variants; 3–20 agents; more than 50 interaction rounds; best tested model reached 52.0% task success | A multi-agent collaboration result from a September 2026 preprint, not a single-agent RL score. |

Analyze failures and partial trajectories
After reporting the primary metric, inspect where trajectories diverge. Useful categories include incorrect initial planning, tool or action-selection errors, state-estimation mistakes, irreversible actions, missed subgoals, context-window loss, timeout, and environment or evaluator failure. Report category definitions before coding the final sample so post hoc labels do not become a second, undisclosed metric.
Trace the first unrecoverable error
For each failed episode, identify the earliest action after which the goal could no longer be reached under the task rules. Compare that point with the last verified milestone. This distinguishes an agent that fails late after making useful progress from one that never enters the correct state.
Separate agent failures from infrastructure failures
Log environment crashes, network errors, unavailable tools, evaluator disagreement, and rate limits separately from policy decisions. Excluding infrastructure failures can be appropriate for a capability estimate, but the exclusion rule must be stated and the raw counts retained.
Common evaluation mistakes and their fixes

Problem: A benchmark is selected because it has a visible leaderboard, then the capability claim is retrofitted to its score.

A practical evaluation workflow
- Write the claim. Specify agent class, task family, capability, and operating constraints.
- Select the benchmark and split. Choose tasks with variation that can expose the claimed challenge; reserve held-out conditions when transfer matters.
- Freeze the protocol. Record versions, model settings, budgets, rollout limits, scoring rules, and seed plan before the final run.
- Define metrics. Choose a primary outcome, budget-based efficiency measure, generalization measure, reliability statistics, and valid partial-progress signals.
- Run independent trials. Use the prespecified seeds or runs and retain raw trajectories, event logs, and infrastructure-failure records.
- Evaluate training and holdout conditions separately. Plot learning curves and report final values without pooling the splits.
- Audit failures. Locate milestone transitions and first unrecoverable errors; separate policy, environment, and evaluator failures.
- Report uncertainty and limitations. Include run-to-run variation, missing protocol details, and the exact scope of the evidence.
How to state the conclusion responsibly
Phrase the conclusion at the level supported by the experiment: “Under the stated ALFWorld split and training budget, method A achieved higher success and effective sample utilization than method B.” Do not convert that sentence into “method A has solved long-horizon reasoning.”
Even a strong result estimates performance under a task distribution and protocol. A benchmark win can support a narrower claim about the evaluated environments and conditions; it cannot establish universal long-horizon ability. That discipline is especially important when comparing adjacent evaluations: BEACON’s language-agent RL results, OSWorld 2.0’s computer-use workflows, AgentWorld’s multi-agent tasks, and WebWorld’s simulated web interactions illuminate different parts of the problem.
