HPE’s Q3 FY2026 results are a useful starting point for evaluating the company, but headline growth alone does not tell you whether the business is improving. Read the quarter’s actual revenue, margins, and cash flow first; separate the Networking and Cloud & AI businesses; then compare management’s updated guidance with its prior outlook and the assumptions behind it. HPE announced results on September 2, 2026, for the quarter ended July 31, 2026.

Start with actual results, not the outlook

HPE CEO Antonio Neri described the quarter as one of “record revenue, orders, and profitability, fueled by surging customer demand across our portfolio.” That is management’s characterization, not an independent assessment. Test it against the company’s reported figures and segment results in the Q3 FY2026 earnings release and earnings presentation.

For a clean comparison, place Q3 FY2026 alongside Q3 FY2025 and, where HPE provides the figures, Q2 FY2026. Keep GAAP measures beside GAAP comparators and non-GAAP measures beside non-GAAP comparators. Revenue, gross profit and margin, operating profit and margin, diluted EPS, operating cash flow, and free cash flow answer different questions; no single headline substitutes for the set.

Q2 FY2026 offers a sequential reference point: HPE reported $10.7 billion in revenue, 36.5% GAAP gross margin, and 36.9% non-GAAP gross margin in its Q2 FY2026 release. Compare Q3 with these figures only on the same accounting basis and period. The difference between the two gross-margin measures is a reminder that adjusted results are not interchangeable with GAAP results; consult HPE’s definitions and reconciliation for what each excludes.

Break revenue growth into reported and normalized growth

A fast-growing reported revenue figure can reflect portfolio changes as well as demand in the continuing business. HPE’s Q3 materials distinguish reported growth from normalized growth, particularly for Networking. Preserve that distinction rather than relabeling reported growth as “organic.” When using a normalized rate, include the company’s stated adjustment and its footnote: the adjusted measure is useful for comparison, but it is not the same as reported revenue growth.

The FY2026 outlook illustrates why this matters. HPE’s presentation gives reported revenue growth guidance of 34%–37% and normalized growth of 21%–23%. The ranges have different bases; neither should be treated as a substitute for the other. Read the presentation’s accompanying footnote to understand the normalization, then assess reported results against the reported outlook and normalized results against the normalized outlook.

Read margins through the segment mix

Consolidated gross and operating margins can move because the revenue mix changes, even when an individual business’s margins are relatively steady. Compare each margin with both the prior-year quarter and the immediately preceding quarter, then inspect the segment rates. HPE’s Q3 earnings materials identify Networking and Cloud & AI as businesses with different growth and margin profiles.

Management discussed Cloud & AI margin moderation associated with mix and pricing, as well as Networking margin dynamics. Treat these as management’s explanations and check them against the reported segment figures. A segment’s growth rate does not establish that its profitability is improving; revenue growth, operating margin, and the mix of work driving that growth need to be considered together.

For both consolidated and segment comparisons, do not let non-GAAP margin stand in for GAAP margin. Adjusted measures can exclude costs that remain economically relevant, and the exclusions may differ by measure. HPE’s release provides definitions and reconciliations that allow readers to see the bridge.

Compare the businesses, not just the company total

Business FY2026 outlook in HPE’s presentation How to interpret it
Networking Revenue growth of 73%–74% reported and approaching 10% normalized; operating margin in the low-20% range. The large gap between reported and normalized growth makes the adjustment essential to understanding the underlying comparison. The operating-margin range is a management outlook, not an actual result.
Cloud & AI Revenue growth in the mid-to-high-20% range; operating margin in the low-to-mid-teens. Evaluate growth and margin together, including management’s comments on mix and pricing. These are FY2026 forecasts, not realized performance.

These figures are HPE’s FY2026 estimates, as presented in its earnings presentation. The exact ranges and qualifiers matter: “approaching 10%,” “low-20%,” and “mid-to-high-20%” are not precise point estimates. In particular, Networking’s reported growth should not be read as the rate of ongoing underlying demand when the company’s normalized estimate is materially lower.

Check whether earnings convert into cash

Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with reported earnings, and look at any working-capital explanation HPE gives for differences between them. Cash generation can be affected by timing and balance-sheet movements, so a strong earnings result does not by itself establish strong cash conversion.

HPE raised its FY2026 free-cash-flow guidance to at least $3.75 billion and provided a FY2027 framework of at least $5.0 billion. Both are management forecasts, not cash already generated. The earnings-call transcript also describes approximately $1.4 billion of gross proceeds received after H3C transactions and says HPE used cash on hand to retire its term loan. Those transaction-related proceeds are not operating cash flow or recurring free cash flow; keep them separate when assessing the business’s cash generation.

Judge guidance by what changed and why

HPE’s Q3 release raised its FY2026 revenue growth outlook to 34%–37% reported, non-GAAP diluted EPS to $3.75–$3.85, and free cash flow to at least $3.75 billion. Its Q4 revenue outlook was $13.9 billion–$14.8 billion. The presentation also gives an FY2027 framework of 13%–17% revenue growth, 16%–20% non-GAAP EPS growth, 14%–15% non-GAAP operating margin, and at least $5.0 billion in free cash flow.

Compare each updated range with the prior range in HPE’s release and presentation rather than judging the new midpoint in isolation. Ask what management says is driving the change: continuing demand, acquired or disposed businesses, margin mix, cost actions, or one-time items. For FY2026 non-GAAP EPS, HPE estimates that the full-year figure excludes approximately $0.82 per diluted share of net after-tax adjustments, primarily amortization, stock compensation, acquisition and disposition charges, other charges, cost-reduction program costs, and H3C sale adjustments. That estimate is a bridge between the adjusted outlook and GAAP earnings, not a reason to ignore the excluded costs.

Revenue growth percentages, EPS levels, EPS growth, and cash-flow targets cover different periods and measures. Read the stated period and accounting basis with every range, and treat FY2027 figures as a framework from management rather than a guarantee. HPE’s presentation and earnings-call materials are the relevant places to check the assumptions and reconciliations.

What this analysis can—and cannot—tell you about HPE stock

Revenue composition, margins, cash conversion, and changes in guidance help assess operating performance and management’s expectations. They do not establish whether HPE shares are cheap or expensive, predict a post-earnings price move, or determine future returns. Those conclusions require market price, valuation measures, peer comparisons, and independent estimates alongside the operating results. Treat the earnings review as one input to an investment decision, not a buy-or-sell signal on its own.
