Why a stock view is not an F&O trade plan
“Bullish on ABC” describes an opinion about a company or share price. It does not tell you which derivative to buy, when to enter, how long the idea remains valid, where to exit or how much capital is at risk. A futures position and an options position can react very differently to the same move in the underlying stock.
SEBI describes a future as a standardized, exchange-traded contract to buy or sell an underlying at a predetermined price on a future date. An option buyer receives a right, not an obligation, under the contract’s specified terms. Those rights and obligations, along with expiry, strike and premium, determine the result—not the headline direction alone.

| Feature | Future | Option |
|---|---|---|
| What the recommendation must identify | Underlying stock, contract expiry, direction (buy or sell), entry conditions and exit plan | Underlying stock, call or put, strike price, expiry, premium or entry conditions and exit plan |
| Basic commitment | A contract obligation to buy or sell at the agreed terms | The buyer has a right, but not an obligation, under the stated terms |
| Why direction alone is inadequate | Price movement, contract size, margin and expiry affect profit and loss | Price movement, strike, premium, time to expiry and implied market expectations affect the position |
| Capital and risk context | Less upfront capital than purchasing the underlying can magnify gains and losses | The position’s outcome depends on the exact option terms; leverage can magnify gains and losses |
SEBI’s investor education material reports that 9 out of 10 individual equity F&O traders incurred net losses in each of financial years 2018–19 and 2021–22. That is a historical aggregate finding for those study periods, not a forecast of your result or a judgment about any particular tip.
Step 1: Verify who issued the recommendation
Before paying for a report, joining a messaging group or relying on a social-media post, establish the provider’s legal identity and regulatory status. Record the exact legal name, registration number and the service being offered. Then check the current entry in SEBI’s official records yourself.
- Capture the identity. Save the legal entity or individual name exactly as shown in the report, invoice, agreement or website. A nickname, logo or profile handle is not enough.
- Check the registration. Search SEBI’s official records using the name and registration number. Confirm that the status is current and that the registered name matches the party contacting you.
- Match the service category to the conduct. SEBI’s investor education materials describe a Research Analyst (RA) as providing research and stock recommendations. An Investment Adviser (IA) provides personalized investment advice. The applicable category depends on what the provider actually does; a marketing label is not proof of registration.
- Keep evidence. Save the record page, report version, terms of service and payment receipt. Registration status and business arrangements can change, so date your notes.
SEBI’s September 23, 2015 public caution states: “The general public is hereby cautioned to deal with only SEBI registered investment advisers and research analysts for availing investment advisory services/ research services.” Treat that as a basic verification rule, not as an endorsement of every registered recommendation.

A provider’s registration does not make a trade profitable, remove market risk or substitute for reading the contract. It does give you a starting point for checking identity, disclosures and the service being represented.

Step 2: Insist on the exact contract
Ask the recommender to put the trade in a form that could be matched to a live exchange quote. Do not act on “buy this stock in F&O” or “sell calls” without the fields below.
| Required field | What to request | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying | The full listed stock name and, where relevant, its exchange symbol | Prevents confusion between similarly named securities or a stock and its derivative |
| Instrument | Future or option | These contracts have different rights, obligations and pricing behavior |
| Expiry | The specific contract expiry date or series | The same strike or direction can behave differently across expiries |
| Option type | Call or put | A call and a put express different rights and risk exposures |
| Strike | The exact strike price for an option | “Buy an option” is incomplete without the strike |
| Entry | Limit or acceptable price range, trigger, quantity and the period for which the call is valid | A quote can become stale or untradeable after the stated context changes |
| Exit | Profit-taking level, stop or other exit method | A target alone does not define how losses will be controlled |
| Invalidation | The price, event or observation that disproves the thesis | Defines when the recommendation should be abandoned rather than defended |
For example, “buy a call” leaves out the underlying, strike, expiry, entry price and quantity. A usable description would identify each of those items and explain what makes the idea no longer valid. The example is a format illustration, not a recommendation.
Step 3: Test the reasoning and its time limit
A serious recommendation should make its thesis understandable. Ask what is expected to move the stock, what evidence supports that expectation and over what period the move is supposed to occur. The explanation may refer to company information, an event, valuation, price behavior or another factor, but a confident tone is not evidence by itself.

Ask what would prove the idea wrong
Require a specific invalidation condition. It might be a price level, a change in the stated event, a result that contradicts the thesis or the passage of a deadline. Without an invalidation rule, a call can be kept alive indefinitely while the loss grows.

Separate a target from an exit plan
A target answers only where the recommender hopes the market will go. Ask when to take profit, what to do if the price moves sideways, and whether the recommendation expires at a particular time. For an option, the time remaining to expiry is part of the decision; a directionally correct view can still fail to produce a satisfactory result if the move is too late or too small for the selected contract.
Check the information independently
Compare the stated rationale with information available from company filings, exchange notices and other reliable sources you can access. You are not trying to prove a forecast certain; you are checking whether the explanation is coherent, current and consistent with the contract’s time frame. If the provider refuses to explain the thesis or supplies only a target and a win-rate claim, treat that as missing information.
Step 4: Translate the call into possible loss
Before considering an order, write down the position’s maximum or plausible loss under the proposed structure. Use the exact contract specifications and current market data; a generic example cannot calculate your trade.
- Quantity and contract size: Confirm the exchange-defined lot or quantity and multiply it by the relevant price change. A small quoted move can represent a much larger rupee gain or loss across the contract.
- Entry cost or margin: Note the premium for an option or the margin and other required funds for a future. Less upfront capital than buying the underlying can increase the percentage impact of a move on your committed funds.
- Adverse move: Estimate what happens if the stock moves against the thesis before the stop or invalidation point. Include a gap or fast-market scenario rather than assuming an order will always fill at the intended price.
- Expiry and settlement: Determine what happens if you hold to expiry, including any exchange settlement or exercise consequences applicable to that contract. Do not assume that a position automatically ends at your preferred price.
- Exitability: Check the quoted bid and offer, trading activity and the likely cost of closing. A theoretical stop is not a guarantee of execution during a sharp move.
Do not risk money you cannot afford to lose merely because the required margin or premium looks small. Leverage works in both directions: it can magnify a gain, but it can magnify a loss just as quickly. A correct view on the stock therefore does not guarantee a profitable or suitable derivative position.

Step 5: Read disclosures, risks and conflicts
Read the entire report and service agreement, not just the message containing the entry price. Look for disclosures of material interests, positions, issuer relationships, compensation arrangements or other conflicts that could influence the recommendation. Also look for a plain-language discussion of the risks specific to the instrument.
SEBI investor information identifies research reports, analysis, risk assessments and disclosures as relevant parts of a research service. If a document omits an important conflict or uses broad language that does not explain the contract’s risks, ask for clarification in writing. Keep both the question and the response.
SEBI’s April 2025 Investor Charter material is labeled a draft circular for public comments. It is useful as an investor-facing checklist—checking registration, reading disclosures, asking questions and seeking clarification for complex, high-risk products—but its proposed text should not be described as a final circular or current law.

Best Value
| Warning sign | What it may indicate | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Unsolicited message or cold call | The contact was not requested and may be using pressure rather than research | Do not click payment links or place an order; independently verify the identity and registration |
| Guaranteed profit or “no-loss” language | Market uncertainty is being misrepresented | Reject the guarantee and request a documented risk explanation |
| Unrealistic return promises | The potential downside, leverage or time required may be concealed | Ask for assumptions and loss scenarios; walk away if they are not supplied |
| Artificial urgency | You are being pushed to act before checking the contract | Let the call expire rather than skip verification |
| Refusal to state expiry, strike or instrument | The message is not an executable trade plan | Do not infer the missing details yourself |
| Only a target is provided | No invalidation, stop or time limit has been defined | Request entry context, exit rules and the condition that cancels the idea |
| Registration screenshot or logo instead of a verifiable record | The identity or status may be misrepresented or outdated | Check the current SEBI record independently |
SEBI specifically cautions investors about stock-specific tips from unregistered sources, unsolicited approaches and claims of unrealistic returns. A polished channel, a large follower count or a string of past screenshots does not replace those checks.
How to compare two F&O recommendations
When two calls concern the same stock or market view, compare them on identical dimensions. Do not choose the one with the larger target until the contract and loss assumptions are comparable.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer for each call |
|---|---|
| Provider | What is the exact identity, current registration status and service category? |
| Contract | What is the underlying, future or option, expiry, and—if an option—the strike and call/put type? |
| Trade plan | What triggers entry, how long is the recommendation valid, where is the exit and what invalidates it? |
| Risk | What is the potential loss, how does leverage affect it, and can the position be exited at a reasonable price? |
| Evidence and disclosures | Is the rationale understandable, are risks discussed, and are material interests or conflicts disclosed? |
| Conduct | Was the approach unsolicited, and does it use guaranteed-profit claims, unrealistic promises or immediate-pressure tactics? |
A call that supplies fewer fields is not automatically wrong, but you cannot evaluate what it does not disclose. Treat missing information as a decision issue rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
A practical pause-and-check workflow
- Save the original call. Keep the message, report version, timestamp, stated price and any terms before asking follow-up questions.
- Verify the provider. Record the exact legal name and registration number, then check current SEBI records. Confirm that the actual service matches the registered category.
- Write the contract in one line. Include stock, future or option, expiry, and for an option, call or put and strike. Add quantity and the proposed entry conditions.
- Define the clock. Note the time window in which the call is valid and what happens if the trigger is not reached. A recommendation that has no time limit can become stale.
- Write the thesis and invalidation. Summarize why the trade might work in plain language, then state the observation or level that would make it wrong.
- Map exits and loss. Calculate the effect of the stated stop, a plausible gap and expiry using current contract data. Check whether the position can be closed at a reasonable price.
- Read disclosures. Identify material interests, conflicts, risk statements, fees and complaint instructions. Ask questions before funding or ordering.
- Screen for pressure. Stop if the approach was unsolicited, the return is guaranteed or unrealistic, or you are told that verification must wait.
- Make a documented decision. If any essential field remains unknown, record “not established” and do not place the trade until you can verify it. Passing the checklist does not make a trade profitable; it only makes the decision more informed.
Illustrative application (not a recommendation)
Suppose a message says, “Buy a call on Company X for a big move this week.” The first response is not to search for the cheapest option. Ask for Company X’s exact listed symbol, the call’s strike, expiry, acceptable entry price, quantity, validity period, target, stop or invalidation condition and the reason for expecting the move.
Next, verify the sender’s legal identity and SEBI registration independently. Read the report for conflicts and risk discussion. Using current exchange data, determine the premium, contract size, bid-offer spread and what the position could lose if the stock stays flat, moves against the thesis or reaches expiry without the expected move. If the sender cannot provide the strike or expiry, the recommendation remains a stock-direction opinion, not an evaluable options plan.
What this process can—and cannot—establish
These checks can expose vague contracts, missing risk controls, unverifiable providers and sales pressure before money is committed. They cannot predict the stock, guarantee execution, eliminate leverage or certify that a registered provider’s analysis is correct. Market conditions, exchange rules, registration records and grievance procedures can change, so verify the current information each time you act.
