Report accuracy with uncertainty and per-class detail, then test whether results survive domain shifts and leakage audits. A single successful prompt on one episode cannot establish that a model learned the task rather than a label convention.
This guide gives a reproducible protocol for separating support, tuning, and final-query data; detecting contamination from preprocessing, retrieval, prompts, and explanations; and publishing an audit trail that another evaluator can rerun.

What a valid few-shot evaluation must prove
Few-shot classification supplies a model with a small support set of labeled examples and asks it to assign labels to new queries. The evaluation is credible only if the reported score reflects decisions on unseen queries under a procedure fixed before the final test. Three questions must be answered separately:
- Task learning: Did the model infer the class rule from the support examples?
- Format following: Did it exploit the wording, order, token shape, or position of the labels?
- Generalization: Does the behavior persist when domains, time periods, demographics, or nuisance context change?
Label leakage occurs when information unavailable at deployment, or information from the final queries, influences prompts, demonstrations, preprocessing, model choice, thresholds, retrieval, labels, explanations, or scoring. Leakage can raise accuracy while making the system fail when that accidental signal disappears.

Lock the evaluation boundary before the final run
Declare the task, data roles, and decision rules before running the final test. Keep every support, tuning, and query example disjoint. The final query set must remain untouched until all choices are frozen.
Assign each example one role
| Role | Permitted use | Forbidden use |
|---|---|---|
| Support examples | Shown to the model in an episode as labeled demonstrations. | Reusing the same item as a final query or selecting it because it makes a prompt look better. |
| Tuning examples | Choosing prompt templates, demonstration policies, label maps, decoding rules, thresholds, or model versions. | Quietly adding final-query errors, labels, retrieval results, or preprocessing statistics. |
| Final queries | One-time scoring after every choice is locked. | Prompt selection, threshold tuning, error-driven retries, retrieval-index construction, normalization choices, or post-hoc model selection. |
Lock the split manifest with stable example IDs. Record which items belong to each role, the class labels available in each episode, and any exclusions. If preprocessing learns vocabulary, normalization parameters, class frequencies, or retrieval indexes, fit those artifacts using training or support material only. Never compute them from final queries.
Define the episode before sampling
Write down the N-way/K-shot design: N is the number of classes in an episode and K is the number of labeled support examples per class. Specify whether classes are sampled uniformly, by dataset frequency, or by a fixed manifest; whether queries are balanced; and how many query examples each episode contains. The class-sampling rule changes the estimand, so it belongs in the protocol rather than in an after-the-fact caption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix the prompt template, label map, answer format, decoding rule, stop conditions, and retry policy. A deterministic decoder and an explicit invalid-output rule prevent an evaluator from silently converting malformed answers into correct labels. If retries are allowed, count them and apply the same rule to every episode.
Make few-shot sampling reproducible
A score from one favorable episode is not a reliable estimate. Repeat the evaluation across independently seeded episodes and, where prompts are randomized, across prompt seeds. Save the random seeds, sampled class IDs, support IDs, query IDs, demonstration order, template version, label tokens, model identifier, and preprocessing version.
Use a repeatable episode procedure
- Load the locked manifest and select the classes according to the declared sampling rule.
- Sample exactly K support examples per selected class using a recorded seed.
- Construct the prompt with the frozen template and label map. Do not inspect the episode’s query labels while constructing it.
- Decode each query with the declared setting. Record the raw output, parsed label, invalid-output status, and any permitted retry.
- Score the episode and append its results to an immutable run log.
- Repeat for the planned number of seeds and episodes, without selecting or discarding runs because of their scores.
Report the total number of episodes, classes, support examples, queries, and model calls. If episodes overlap in source examples, state that explicitly; overlapping episodes affect the independence of uncertainty estimates.
Report accuracy with uncertainty and class detail
Overall accuracy is the number of correctly classified queries divided by the number of scored queries. It is useful but incomplete, especially when classes are imbalanced or semantically different in difficulty.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Measure | What it answers | Reporting note |
|---|---|---|
| Overall accuracy | How often were all scored queries correct? | Give the numerator, denominator, and whether invalid outputs count as errors. |
| Per-class accuracy | Which classes are being recognized or missed? | List every class, including classes with zero correct predictions. |
| Macro-average | How does performance look when each class receives equal weight? | Prefer it when class frequencies or query counts are uneven. |
| Episode-level mean and spread | How variable is performance across sampled tasks? | Report the number of episodes and a standard error or confidence interval. |
| Confusion matrix | Which labels are systematically confused? | Include it when classes are semantically related or fine-grained. |
For repeated episodes, calculate the mean score across episodes and show uncertainty over those episodes. A confidence interval or standard error must identify the unit used for resampling. If queries are pooled while episodes share support examples or classes, a binomial interval on every individual query can understate uncertainty. Episode-level intervals are often more honest for an episodic design.

State whether the reported interval reflects only sampling variation, prompt-seed variation, or both. If a deployment decision depends on a minimum class performance, report the lower bound or worst-class result rather than hiding it behind a global average.
Run label and position controls to expose format dependence
Models can associate a correct answer with a token shape or position rather than with the class concept. Controls preserve the task while changing superficial conventions.
Permute label tokens
Replace meaningful labels with arbitrary, balanced tokens and rerun the same episodes. For example, map classes to class_1, class_2, and class_3, then generate several random bijections. Keep the mapping hidden from the scoring code except for the declared key. A large score change across equivalent mappings indicates dependence on label names or prior associations.
Permute answer positions
For multiple-choice prompts, rotate the correct option through each answer position while preserving the question and choices. Balance positions across classes and episodes. Compare accuracy and per-position error rates. A model that performs well only when the correct answer is in one position is exploiting a response-position artifact.
Nowak, Cadet, and Chin’s ABCD: All Biases Come Disguised study (Proceedings of Machine Learning Research, 2026) describes label-position and few-shot-prompt biases in multiple-choice evaluation. In its experiments, a permutation-based bias-reduced protocol produced a threefold reduction in mean accuracy variance with only a minimal mean-performance decrease. Treat that figure as the result of their experiments and protocol, not as a universal improvement for every model or task.
Balance demonstration order
Randomize or counterbalance the order of demonstrations so that a class is not consistently first or last. Record the order seed. If accuracy changes when the same support items are reordered, the prompt has an order effect that should be reported as a robustness result, not averaged away without explanation.
Compare equivalent label names
Run semantically meaningful names, neutral identifiers, and a fresh permutation under otherwise identical conditions. If meaningful names outperform neutral names, the difference may reflect pretraining associations or label semantics rather than in-context task induction. Do not claim that neutral tokens are always superior; use the comparison to characterize dependence.
Test robustness when deployment distribution changes
In-distribution accuracy answers only whether the model works on data resembling the benchmark. If deployment differs, add deliberately shifted evaluations and report the degradation from the reference condition.

Domain and temporal shifts
Evaluate queries from a different source domain, product area, writing style, or time period. Keep the label definition fixed and document what changed. A temporal split can reveal dependence on obsolete terminology or events that were present in the support examples.
Demographic and nuisance-context shifts
Where lawful and appropriate, test changes in demographic composition, dialect, formatting, background, or irrelevant metadata. Remove sensitive attributes from the prompt when they are not part of the intended task, and test whether adding irrelevant context changes predictions.
Spurious-correlation shifts
Construct or use a split in which a feature correlated with the label in support data is decoupled from the label in queries. Report both reference accuracy and shifted accuracy, plus the absolute and relative degradation. MetaCoCo (ICLR 2024) focuses on spurious-correlation shifts in few-shot classification and reports significant degradation of existing methods under those shifts. FewSTAB (ECCV 2024) provides a framework for quantifying robustness to spurious bias in few-shot image classifiers. Their purpose is to expose failure under changed correlations, not to provide a replacement for ordinary accuracy.

Check whether the benchmark resembles the real task
Benchmark scores are conditional on class semantics, granularity, and way count. Document the number of classes, how similar their meanings are, the label hierarchy, and whether the episode is binary, few-way, or many-way.
Bennequin and coauthors’ CVPR Workshops analysis (2022) argues that common benchmark task composition can be distant from industrial use and proposes semantic task sampling and many-way settings. A benchmark with semantically dissimilar classes may make recognition easier than a real support queue with closely related labels. Conversely, fine-grained classes and many-way episodes can be substantially harder. Do not generalize a benchmark percentage to deployment without these details.
Describe the evaluation unit
- Class granularity: State whether labels represent broad topics, intent families, species, products, or fine-grained subtypes.
- Way count: Give the number of classes presented per episode and explain whether it changes between evaluation and deployment.
- Semantic overlap: Identify known near-neighbor classes and include a confusion matrix for them.
- Query construction: Say whether queries are natural traffic, curated examples, synthetic text, or images, and whether duplicate or near-duplicate items were removed.
Audit retrieval, preprocessing, and auxiliary signals for leakage
Leakage is not limited to the label string in a prompt. Inspect every data path that can carry information from the final query or its label into the decision.
Retrieval controls
Build retrieval indexes from permitted training or support data only. Do not index the final query corpus, its labels, or embeddings computed after inspecting test errors. Log every retrieved ID, similarity score, and cutoff. A retrieval hit that contains the answer, a duplicated query, or a post-test annotation is a direct contamination path.

Preprocessing controls
Fit token vocabularies, normalization statistics, feature selectors, augmentation policies, and class-frequency adjustments without final-query data. Preserve the fitted artifact and its creation manifest. Recompute preprocessing independently for each training fold when the design uses cross-validation; otherwise, statistics can cross the split boundary.

Threshold and calibration controls
Choose confidence thresholds, abstention rules, class priors, and calibration parameters on tuning data. Never lower a threshold because the final set contains many difficult examples. If an abstention option exists, report coverage and accuracy among answered queries separately, with the rule fixed before final scoring.
Retry and error-analysis controls
Do not feed a model its own final-query mistakes and retry until the answer changes. Error analysis may improve a later, separately declared experiment, but the original final score must remain immutable. Record all calls, including failed parses and retries, so selective reporting is visible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audit explanations and other signals that may reveal the class
Rationales, feature attributions, and class-dependent explanations can leak the selected class even when the classifier’s input is unchanged. Jethani, Saporta, and Ranganath (AISTATS 2023) demonstrate this problem and motivate quantitative checks.
Use label-agnostic explanation tests
Generate explanations without exposing the gold label or a class-specific instruction. Then test whether an independent evaluator can recover the predicted class from the explanation alone. If class identity is trivially encoded in explanation wording, the explanation is not an independent validation of the decision.
Apply distribution-aware controls
Compare explanations across label permutations and matched inputs. A valid explanation should track task-relevant evidence, not merely repeat a class name, position, or class-dependent template. Mask explicit label tokens and rerun the explanation test; a large change identifies a leakage channel.
Separate interpretation from scoring
Do not use explanations, rationales, or attributions to choose prompts, repair labels, or exclude errors in the same final run that they are meant to interpret. Freeze the prediction first, then generate and audit auxiliary outputs under a separate log.
Choose an evaluation design by the risk you need to control
No single protocol dominates on every axis. Compare candidate designs against the risks that matter for the intended use.
| Design axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to publish |

| Leakage resistance | Are support, tuning, and final queries disjoint? Are retrieval and preprocessing artifacts isolated? | Split manifest, artifact provenance, and locked decision date. |

CLUES, published by Microsoft Research on November 29, 2021, proposes a benchmark for few-shot natural-language understanding and discusses principles for a unified standardized evaluation approach. Its value is a common evaluation frame; it does not remove the need to disclose task composition or leakage controls for a new experiment.

A practical pre-publication checklist
- Is the task definition and target label set written down?
- Are support, tuning, and final queries disjoint by stable ID?
- Were prompt, model, threshold, retrieval, preprocessing, and decoding choices frozen before final scoring?
- Are N-way, K-shot, class sampling, query counts, and all seeds recorded?
- Were label tokens, answer positions, and demonstration order permuted?
- Are overall, per-class, macro, uncertainty, invalid-output, and confusion results available?
- Was at least one relevant domain, temporal, demographic, or spurious-correlation shift tested?
- Does the benchmark’s class semantics and way count resemble deployment?
- Were explanations and auxiliary signals tested for class-dependent leakage?
- Can another evaluator rerun the split, prompts, model version, and scoring code?
How to write the final result
Start with the evaluation unit and boundary: identify the data source, class count, N-way/K-shot design, number of episodes, and the fact that final queries were withheld from all tuning. Give the main accuracy with numerator and denominator, then per-class and macro results with uncertainty over the stated unit. Follow with permutation controls, shifted-condition degradation, and any invalid or abstained outputs.
Explain what the controls establish and what they do not. Stable scores across label maps and answer positions support resistance to those artifacts; they do not prove immunity to every form of contamination. A small gap between in-distribution and shifted accuracy is evidence for the tested shifts only, not a guarantee of deployment safety. Preserve the complete run record so a future model or prompt change starts a new, clearly separated experiment.
