Evaluate a diamond-enhanced cold plate as a complete thermal-hydraulic and platform subsystem—not as a material-conductivity claim. Require a matched baseline at the same heat load, coolant, inlet temperature, flow and pressure drop; compare hotspot temperature and chip-to-coolant resistance; include the thermal interface material and pump energy; then verify mechanical fit, reliability and server qualification.
The best independent quantitative evidence located is a 2026 peer-reviewed study in which diamond-shaped pin fins produced roughly 15% lower thermal resistance than conventional straight-fin microchannels. Its best chip-to-coolant results, including the thermal interface material, were 6.9 K/kW for copper and 9.0 K/kW for copper-tungsten at a 1 kW heat load, 9.0 kPa inlet-to-outlet pressure drop and water coolant. Those values describe that study’s geometry and test conditions, not every commercial product marketed as diamond-enhanced.

What “diamond-enhanced” means in a cold plate
“Diamond-enhanced” is not one standardized construction. The phrase can describe a fluid-channel geometry, a diamond heat spreader, a composite material or a ceramic-matrix structure. These options move heat and manage stress differently, so their results cannot be collapsed into a single diamond-cold-plate performance number.
| Architecture | What is actually diamond-enhanced | Engineering questions |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond-shaped pin fins | The internal fin or pin geometry is diamond-shaped, while the plate may be copper or copper-tungsten. | How does the shape change boundary-layer development, pressure drop, manufacturability and clogging tolerance? |
| Copper plate with an integrated diamond spreader | A diamond layer or spreader is joined to a copper cold plate to spread heat before it reaches the liquid channels. | What are the diamond thickness, bond resistance, joint reliability and spreading benefit under the actual package hotspot pattern? |
| Diamond in a silicon-carbide matrix | Diamond is integrated into a SiC-based material used for the heat-transfer structure. | How are channels formed and sealed, and how do thermal expansion, joining and coolant compatibility compare with copper? |
| Copper-diamond composite | Diamond particles or structures are combined with copper as a thermal-management material. | What are the effective in-plane and through-plane conductivities, density, machinability and interface resistance? |
The construction must appear on the test request and purchase specification. A vendor demonstrating a diamond-shaped fin has not demonstrated the same thing as a vendor selling a diamond spreader or copper-diamond composite. The cited examples illustrate this distinction: the ORNL-recorded study evaluates copper and copper-tungsten pin-fin plates, while Frore’s LiquidJet DIAMOND page, Coherent’s Thermadite announcement and Element Six’s materials page describe different commercial architectures.

Define the thermal result before comparing plates
A cold plate is useful only if it keeps the accelerator within its junction, hotspot and reliability limits at an acceptable pumping cost. Ask for the complete thermal boundary, not a single temperature or conductivity figure.
Use hotspot temperature, not only an average
Record the hottest measured or inferred location on the die, the sensor type and location, the heat-load distribution, the coolant inlet temperature and the uncertainty. A plate can lower an average die temperature while leaving a local hotspot that controls throttling or lifetime. The test should state whether the temperature is a junction estimate, an on-package sensor reading, a surface measurement or an external thermal model.
Make thermal resistance boundaries explicit
“Thermal resistance” is meaningful only when its two temperature boundaries are named. Request the resistance from the chip or junction to a defined coolant reference, and identify whether the package lid, spreader, solder or other layers are included. The ORNL study reports chip-to-coolant resistance including the thermal interface material; a bare plate-to-fluid value would not be directly comparable.

Match the operating point
At minimum, record heat load, coolant type and properties, inlet temperature, flow rate, pressure drop, steady-state or transient protocol, and the point at which temperatures are sampled. If one plate is tested at a higher flow or a cooler inlet, its lower temperature is not evidence of a better design by itself.
What the strongest independent study actually shows
Pinkus and co-authors report roughly 15% lower thermal resistance for diamond-shaped pin fins than for a conventional straight-fin microchannel. The study’s best reported chip-to-coolant results, including the thermal interface material, are summarized below.
| Parameter | Reported condition |
|---|---|
| Heat load | 1 kW |
| Coolant | Water |
| Inlet-to-outlet pressure drop | 9.0 kPa |
| Copper result | 6.9 K/kW chip-to-coolant thermal resistance |
| Copper-tungsten result | 9.0 K/kW chip-to-coolant thermal resistance |
| Comparison | Approximately 15% lower thermal resistance for the diamond-shaped pin-fin design versus the conventional straight-fin microchannel tested in that work |
| Evidence type | 2026 peer-reviewed study; values are specific to its geometry, materials and test protocol |
At a 1 kW load, a resistance reported in K/kW can be read as a temperature rise in kelvins per kilowatt under the stated boundary. It is not a universal rating, and it does not predict the temperature of a different package, TIM, flow path or coolant loop. The study is valuable because it reports thermal and hydraulic conditions together; it does not eliminate the need for a platform-specific test.
Request the full geometry, channel dimensions, fin pitch, surface finish, joining method, TIM specification and uncertainty budget when using these numbers as a procurement baseline. If those details are unavailable, use the results to frame a test plan rather than to estimate rack savings.

Measure the hydraulic penalty and pump energy
Lower thermal resistance often requires more wetted surface, tighter passages or a more aggressive flow field. Pressure drop is therefore a co-equal acceptance metric.
Measure pressure drop at a stated flow
Specify where pressure is measured—normally at the cold-plate inlet and outlet—and report flow rate, coolant temperature and fluid properties. A pressure-drop number without flow is incomplete. Compare candidate and baseline plates at matched flow, then compare them again at matched pressure drop if the pump or manifold is the system bottleneck.
Translate pressure drop into pump work
The hydraulic power needed by a plate is approximately Phydraulic = Δp × Q, where Δp is pressure drop and Q is volumetric flow. Electrical pump input is higher after accounting for pump and motor efficiency. Include this energy when calculating accelerator or rack performance per watt. A plate that saves a few degrees but requires substantially more flow can reduce total system efficiency.
Check the whole loop
The plate is only one resistance in a loop containing hoses, manifolds, quick disconnects, filters, control valves, a coolant distribution unit and possibly several parallel plates. The Open Compute Project cold-plate work frames the technology cooling system from cold plate through CDU and seeks a vendor-neutral baseline for single-phase direct-to-chip cold plates. Use that system boundary when determining whether a plate-level gain survives in the rack.

Commercial figures are useful leads, but they are not independent head-to-head benchmarks. Ask each supplier for the baseline definition, heat map, flow and pressure conditions, instrumentation, uncertainty and any third-party replication.
| Supplier or product | Published claim | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Frore LiquidJet DIAMOND | The product page claims a GPU temperature reduction of 16–22°C and 30–35% more AI tokens per watt versus its stated multi-inlet skived comparison. | Vendor claim. Require the exact GPU, workload, inlet temperature, flow, pressure drop, power limit and definition of “tokens per watt.” |
| Frore October 7, 2026 announcement | Claims 35% higher AI tokens per watt and revenue versus traditional skived cold plates. | Vendor claim. “Revenue” depends on workload, utilization and commercial assumptions; request the underlying test and model. |
| Coherent Thermadite 800 | The March 5, 2026 announcement identifies 800 W/(m·K) conductivity—approximately twice copper—and claims a temperature reduction above 15°C versus conventional copper cold plates in high-heat-flux AI accelerator environments. | Vendor claim about a material and announced cold-plate use. Conductivity is not the same as assembled plate resistance; request measured plate data and independent replication. |
The source pages are Frore’s product specification, Frore’s October 7, 2026 announcement and Coherent’s March 5, 2026 announcement. None of these cited announcements establishes an independent, apples-to-apples benchmark against the ORNL geometry or against every conventional cold plate.
Verify accelerator and server compatibility
A cold plate is a mechanical component as much as a thermal one. Frore lists a 104.6 × 62 × 20.4 mm LiquidJet DIAMOND configuration for NVIDIA GB300 and says dimensions are customized to the target GPU. That example does not prove fit for another accelerator, board revision or server tray.

- Keep-out zones for memory, inductors, connectors, cables and board components.
- Port size, orientation, fitting standard, bend radius and manifold clearance.
- Cold-plate flatness, surface finish and TIM thickness range.
Check the thermal interface stack
Confirm whether the design uses a supplied TIM, a customer-specified material or a package-integrated interface. Measure bond-line thickness after assembly, because a high-conductivity plate cannot compensate for a poorly controlled interface. The same TIM must be used in the baseline and candidate comparison unless the decision specifically includes a different interface.
Validate coolant and flow distribution
Obtain a compatibility statement for the planned coolant, metals, coatings, seals and fittings. Check galvanic-corrosion risk, allowable temperature range, particulate tolerance, filtration and freeze or storage requirements. Ask for flow-distribution data across parallel plates; a low plate pressure drop does not guarantee equal flow to every accelerator.
Qualify reliability, service and safety
Thermal performance at steady state does not establish years of rack operation. Put these requirements into the qualification plan and request documented acceptance limits:
- Hydrostatic or pressure-decay leak testing of every assembled plate and manifold connection.
- Thermal cycling across the intended operating and storage temperatures.
- Vibration and shipping exposure with the installed mounting hardware.
- Corrosion and coolant-compatibility evidence for every wetted material.
- Particulate generation, filter loading and cleanability limits.
- Field replacement procedure, drain and refill method, connector service life and spare-part strategy.
- Warranty scope, failure reporting, traceability and root-cause support.
The cited commercial sources do not settle these vendor-specific questions. Treat missing leak, cycling or server-OEM qualification data as an open risk, not as evidence that the design is unreliable.
A practical six-step evaluation procedure
- Identify the construction and target package. Record whether the candidate uses diamond-shaped fins, an integrated spreader, a diamond-SiC matrix or a copper-diamond composite. Freeze the exact accelerator SKU, board revision and server chassis.
- Write a matched baseline. Define the incumbent plate, TIM, heat-load map, coolant, inlet temperature, flow, pressure-drop measurement points and steady-state or transient test duration. Do not accept “conventional plate” without a drawing and part number.
- Measure thermal and hydraulic results together. At the same load and coolant conditions, capture hotspot or junction temperature, coolant inlet and outlet temperatures, flow and inlet-to-outlet pressure drop. Report uncertainty and sensor locations.
- Include the complete thermal stack and pump energy. Include TIM, package lid or spreader where applicable, and calculate hydraulic and electrical pumping cost. If the candidate needs a different flow, show the thermal result and energy cost at that operating point.
- Complete mechanical and reliability qualification. Verify drawings, mounting pressure, keep-outs, ports, fittings, coolant compatibility, leak tests, thermal cycling and service procedures with the server OEM and supplier.
- Run an instrumented pilot before extrapolating. Install candidate and baseline plates in representative servers or a representative thermal test vehicle. Measure accelerator performance per watt, rack inlet and outlet temperatures, CDU behavior, pump power, alarms and maintenance events under the intended workload.

Use a decision framework rather than a single score
Set hard gates before reviewing commercial claims. A candidate that fails a gate should not be rescued by an attractive temperature number.
- Thermal gate: Meets the accelerator’s hotspot and junction limits at the specified sustained and transient loads.
- Hydraulic gate: Stays within the available pump, manifold and CDU pressure budget at the required flow.
- Mechanical gate: Fits the package, board and chassis with verified mounting pressure, keep-outs and service access.
- Reliability gate: Passes leak, corrosion, thermal-cycle and vibration requirements with traceable documentation.
- System-efficiency gate: Improves useful accelerator or rack performance per watt after pump and CDU energy are included.
- Evidence gate: Distinguishes peer-reviewed or independently replicated measurements from supplier claims and identifies unresolved uncertainty.
Once the gates pass, rank options by total cost of ownership, supply continuity, qualification effort, serviceability and expected rack density. The cited sources do not establish current commercial pricing, supply, independent head-to-head tests of the named commercial plates, exact compatibility beyond the listed GB300 example or reseller availability. Common evaluation mistakes and their fixes
Comparing conductivity with assembled resistance
A material value such as 800 W/(m·K) describes a material property under a stated definition; it does not include TIM, bond layers, spreading geometry, channels or coolant convection. Fix this by requesting chip-to-coolant resistance under the same load and flow as the baseline.
Quoting a temperature delta without the baseline
“15°C cooler” or “22°C cooler” is uninterpretable without the compared plate, inlet temperature, flow, heat map and sensor boundary. Fix this by publishing both absolute temperatures and the full test conditions.
Ignoring pressure drop
A lower temperature at a much higher pressure drop can increase rack power and reduce performance per watt. Fix this by reporting a pressure-drop curve and pump input alongside thermal resistance.
Assuming a listed dimension is drop-in compatible
Overall dimensions do not reveal die alignment, bolt load, connector clearance, TIM compression or manifold routing. Fix this with a controlled drawing review and a physical fit check in the target server.
Extrapolating a lab plate result to a rack
Parallel flow imbalance, CDU controls, hose losses and workload variability can erase a plate-level advantage. Fix this with an instrumented pilot that measures the complete cooling loop and representative AI workload.
Bottom line
The defensible way to evaluate a diamond-enhanced cold plate is to identify its actual architecture, reproduce a matched thermal-hydraulic test, include TIM and pump energy, and then qualify mechanical fit and reliability in the target platform. The 2026 peer-reviewed pin-fin results provide a useful independent reference, while commercial temperature and tokens-per-watt figures remain vendor claims until their test conditions and independent replication are supplied. Buy only after the candidate passes thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, reliability and system-efficiency gates in an instrumented pilot.
