The most defensible evaluation uses several views of the same locked test set: IoU and Dice for pixel overlap, a boundary metric for contour placement, a connectivity-aware score for breaks and disconnected traces, width-stratified results for thin cracks, and false-positive measurements on verified crack-free images. Report those results separately for each image source and acquisition regime, with micro and macro aggregation and uncertainty intervals. A single overall IoU can conceal a model that misses one-pixel traces, breaks long cracks into pieces, or fails when close-up imagery changes to a wide road scene.
Start with a fixed, leakage-controlled test protocol
Model comparison is only meaningful when every model sees the same held-out images and is scored by the same implementation. Freeze the test cohort before tuning thresholds, augmentation, post-processing, or architecture choices. If a test image influences model selection, threshold selection, or post-processing decisions, it is no longer an untouched test observation; record that change and create a new holdout for the final estimate.

Deduplicate before splitting
Near-identical frames, crops from one photograph, repeated views of the same pavement section, and augmented copies can put effectively identical evidence in both training and test sets. Deduplicate at the source-image or scene level where possible, not only by filename. A split that looks random at the file level can still leak surface texture, camera position, or annotation style.
Stratify what the model will encounter
At minimum, preserve the distribution of crack presence, source, and crack-width band when the dataset is large enough. Keep verified crack-free images in the evaluation design rather than evaluating only positive masks. For operational use, also stratify by material, camera, scale, lighting, and scene type when those labels exist.

The OpenCrack project describes a leakage-controlled consolidation with cross-split deduplication and a stratified 70/15/15 split across source, crack presence, and crack-width band. Its current roster lists 32 source datasets under 28 labels, and its documentation identifies a confirmed-negative pool of 11,229 images. Those are project-reported properties, not independent audits, so reproduce the checks if you adopt the data.
Separate model development from final scoring
Use training and validation data for architecture, loss, threshold, and calibration decisions. Keep the test labels inaccessible during those decisions. If you perform repeated experiments, report how many candidates were tried and avoid selecting a model because of a favorable test result. A small, untouched final cohort is more informative than a larger cohort repeatedly used as a tuning target.
Use complementary metrics instead of one leaderboard number
Thin and fragmented structures expose different failure modes. Region metrics measure shared pixels, boundary metrics measure contour displacement, and topology metrics measure whether a predicted trace remains connected. None replaces the others.

Region overlap: IoU and Dice
Intersection over Union (IoU) divides the intersection of predicted and reference crack pixels by their union. Dice, also called the F1 score for masks, is twice the intersection divided by the total number of predicted and reference pixels. IoU penalizes extra and missing area more strongly; Dice is numerically higher for the same pair of masks. Report both, because a reader otherwise cannot tell whether a claimed improvement reflects a change in overlap or simply the metric scale.
State whether a score is image-weighted (micro) or source-weighted (macro). Micro aggregation pools image-level contributions and therefore gives greater influence to sources with more images. Macro aggregation first summarizes each source and then averages sources, giving a small source the same weight as a large one. OpenCrack supplies both styles; its documentation warns against treating unlike aggregations as directly comparable.
Boundary alignment: Boundary F1 or normalized surface Dice
Boundary F1 evaluates whether predicted and reference contours fall within a stated distance tolerance, while normalized surface Dice (NSD) summarizes the fraction of contour surface within that tolerance. These metrics can reveal a mask that has reasonable area overlap but a consistently shifted edge, or a mask whose area is small yet whose surviving centerline is correctly placed.

Always publish the boundary tolerance, pixel spacing or image scale, contour extraction convention, and implementation version. Published benchmark descriptions name Boundary F1 and NSD but do not establish one universal formula, tolerance, or connectivity convention. Do not present a boundary score as reproducible unless those details accompany it.
Connectivity and topology: clIoU or an explicit skeleton measure
A connectivity-aware metric asks whether the predicted crack trace preserves the reference structure rather than merely occupying similar area. clIoU is one option; a stated skeleton or path-connectivity measure is another. Include its tolerance, denoted by τ when applicable, the pixel-neighborhood convention, skeletonization method, and treatment of junctions and endpoints.
Connectivity scores are especially useful when a model predicts many short pieces along a real crack. A mask can have acceptable Dice while containing gaps that make it unusable for tracing, length estimation, or maintenance planning. Conversely, a model can connect fragments with a spurious bridge. The metric and the downstream task should determine whether that bridge is a success or an error.

Make thin-crack performance visible
Define width before looking at results
Width thresholds are not universal. State whether width is measured on the reference mask, along a skeleton using a distance transform, as a local perpendicular diameter, or by another rule. Specify how junctions, diagonal cracks, antialiasing, and one-pixel masks are handled. Predeclare the bands and do not move the cutoff after seeing which model wins.
The FACS-Net paper reports a thin-crack subset at width ≤2 pixels on CrackVision12K. That cutoff belongs to that study; it is not a field-wide standard. You may use the same band for comparability, but label it as a study-specific choice and add wider bands so readers can see where performance changes.

Report each width band separately
At minimum, publish the number of images or crack instances in each band and IoU, Dice, boundary, and connectivity scores for each. Include a “no crack” category separately rather than treating it as a zero-width crack. If a single image contains both narrow and wide structures, define whether the image is assigned by its narrowest crack, average width, a per-pixel mask, or separate instances.

Explain why one-pixel masks behave differently
The OpenCrack nnU-Net model card states: “IoU is unfair to one-pixel-wide cracks (a perfect prediction can score ≈0.48).” Attribute that statement to the model card’s explanation of metric behavior, not as a universal performance result. The underlying issue is that a one-pixel displacement can create a large union relative to the thin reference, even when the predicted line follows the crack visually. Boundary and connectivity measures help distinguish a displaced but coherent trace from random noise.
Do not “fix” this behavior by silently dilating predictions or labels. If you evaluate a tolerance-based or dilated representation, apply the identical operation to every model, report the original pixel-level scores as well, and explain what deployment decision the tolerant score represents.
Evaluate fragmented masks according to the task
Define what a gap means
A gap may be a real miss, an annotation omission, an occlusion, or an acceptable break at the resolution of the image. Establish an annotation policy before scoring: for example, whether a short interruption caused by shadow is labeled as continuous, whether two nearby parallel cracks are separate instances, and whether a junction must preserve every branch.

Pixel overlap tells you how much crack area was recovered. Connectivity-aware scoring tells you whether the recovered area forms usable paths. Report examples of long cracks with one or more breaks, branching junctions, and multiple nearby fragments. Per-image distributions are more revealing than a mean alone: two models with equal average clIoU may differ greatly in the number of catastrophic disconnects.
Do not post-process only one contender
Morphological closing, skeleton bridging, component filtering, and probability-threshold changes can alter connectivity and false-positive rates. If post-processing is part of a model’s deployed pipeline, tune it on validation data, apply it identically in the declared comparison, and describe every operation. Comparing raw output from one model with bridged output from another is not a fair model comparison.
Test close-up and operational scenes as different regimes
Close-up surface photographs and wide road-inspection scenes differ in apparent crack width, perspective, background texture, lighting, camera motion, and the amount of crack-free area. A model that ranks first on close-ups may not rank first on wide scenes.

Use in-domain and cross-domain results
Report results on the same acquisition regime used for training and on a held-out source or domain. Keep the cohorts labeled in every table. Do not merge a close-up score and a wide-scene score into one “overall” result when the deployment question concerns one regime in particular.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In OpenCrack’s project comparison, nnU-Net has an in-domain IoU of 0.539 but an IoU of 0.142 on the PaveSafe wide-scene cohort. The project reports that all crack-trained models fall in a 0.09–0.14 IoU band on that wide-scene cohort and that model ranking depends on acquisition regime. These values are project-specific benchmark results, not a universal conversion factor between close-ups and roads.
Hold out entire sources when possible
Random image splits estimate interpolation among similar images. Holding out a source, camera, site, or material estimates deployment shift. Publish both when the data allow it: a random held-out result answers “does the model work on similar samples?” and a source-held-out result answers “does it transfer to a new acquisition setting?”
Measure false positives on negatives and hard negatives
A segmentation model can achieve strong positive-mask scores while painting seams, lane joints, stains, aggregate texture, or shadows as cracks. Include verified crack-free images and difficult non-crack structures. Report image-level false-positive rate or specificity, and state the decision threshold used to convert probabilities into masks.
The OpenCrack documentation identifies 11,229 confirmed-negative images for false-positive evaluation. Use such a pool only after checking how negatives were verified and whether scenes overlap with positive images. A negative image containing an unlabeled hairline crack is not a clean negative; document review criteria and, where possible, have independent reviewers verify a sample.
Pair false-positive rates with recall or sensitivity on positive images. A threshold that suppresses every false alarm by predicting no cracks is not useful, and a threshold that maximizes recall by marking every seam is not useful either. Show the threshold trade-off or a precision-recall curve when operational costs differ.
Best Value
Aggregate results transparently and quantify uncertainty
Publish micro, macro, and per-source values
Micro means are appropriate when each image represents one unit of operational exposure and the deployment distribution matches the test distribution. Macro means prevent a large source from dominating and are useful when source diversity matters. Give both when possible, plus the number of images and positives per source. Never compare a micro score from one study with a macro score from another as if the difference measured model quality.
Add confidence intervals
Use a declared resampling or statistical procedure and state whether resampling occurs by image, crack instance, scene, or source. Resampling individual crops from one scene can make intervals unrealistically narrow. OpenCrack reports 1,000-resample bootstrap confidence intervals for its comparison on 6,910 positive images; preserve that qualification whenever citing those figures.
Show distributions, not just means
Include median, quartiles, or per-image histograms for thin-crack and fragmented subsets. A mean can hide a minority of severe failures that matter most in inspection. For source-held-out experiments, show each held-out source separately rather than averaging away the difficult one.
What published benchmark numbers actually show
OpenCrack nnU-Net comparison
On the project’s held-out positive cohort, OpenCrack reports the following nnU-Net values. The cohort contains 6,910 positive images, and the project reports 1,000-resample bootstrap confidence intervals for the comparison.
| Metric | Reported value | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| IoU | 0.539 | Region overlap; aggregation type must be read from the project table |
| Dice | 0.664 | Overlap expressed as Dice/F1 |
| Boundary F1 | 0.608 | Contour agreement under the project’s implementation and tolerance |
| NSD | 0.700 | Normalized surface agreement under the project’s implementation |
| clIoU (τ=4) | 0.641 | Connectivity-aware overlap with the stated tolerance |
The project says the ranking of its four compared models is identical across all five per-image metrics. That conclusion is limited to its evaluated models, cohort, implementations, and aggregation; it does not establish that one metric is universally sufficient.
OmniCrack30k context
The 2024 OmniCrack30k paper describes 30,000 samples from more than 20 datasets spanning asphalt, ceramic, concrete, masonry, and steel. It reports nnU-Net achieving a mean clIoU_4px of 64% on its benchmark. That percentage is specific to the paper’s data, split, aggregation, and implementation. It should not be compared directly with OpenCrack’s clIoU(τ=4) unless those choices are matched.
FACS-Net context
A 2026 FACS-Net paper describes frequency-aware attention and a crack-topology loss designed to preserve structural continuity. Its abstract reports gains over Hybrid-Segmentor on a ≤2-pixel thin-crack subset of CrackVision12K. Treat those gains as paper-specific claims; without inspecting and reproducing the full evaluation, do not convert them into a general ranking or a universal thin-crack improvement.
A reproducible comparison workflow
- Write the evaluation plan first. Define the deployment regime, positive and negative cohorts, width bands, connectivity rule, thresholds, metrics, aggregation, and confidence-interval method.
- Lock and audit the split. Deduplicate related images, hold out sources where possible, and record source, scene, crack presence, width band, material, camera, and acquisition labels.
- Freeze model outputs. Produce masks or probability maps for every model on exactly the same images. Record preprocessing, image resizing, tiling, thresholding, and any post-processing.
- Score the full metric panel. Compute IoU and Dice, at least one boundary metric, and a connectivity-aware metric. Use one implementation and version for all models.
- Stratify before averaging. Break out thin-width bands, fragmented cases, crack-free negatives, hard negatives, source, material, and acquisition regime.
- Calculate micro and macro summaries. Include per-source values, sample counts, and confidence intervals. Label every table cell with its aggregation.
- Inspect failure cases. Review false negatives, disconnected traces, bridges across joints, and false positives on texture. Keep a fixed qualitative panel so models are judged on identical examples.
- Report deployment-relevant trade-offs. Show how threshold changes affect recall, false alarms, boundary quality, and connectivity. Choose a threshold using the validation policy, not the final test labels.
- Archive the evaluation recipe. Record dataset version, split manifest, code version, metric parameters, hardware-independent preprocessing, and random seeds so another team can rerun the comparison.
Common evaluation mistakes and their fixes
- Only reporting overall IoU: add Dice, boundary, connectivity, width-stratified, negative-set, and per-source results.
- Calling every ≤2-pixel result “thin-crack performance”: identify the dataset and explain that the cutoff is study-specific.
- Mixing close-up and wide-scene images: publish in-domain and cross-regime results separately.
- Ignoring negatives: include verified crack-free and hard-negative imagery, with the threshold and specificity or false-positive rate.
- Using a test set to tune thresholds: move threshold selection to validation and reserve a fresh final holdout.
- Hiding source imbalance: give micro, macro, and per-source summaries with counts.
- Leaving metric details unspecified: state boundary tolerance, pixel connectivity, skeletonization, clIoU tolerance, and implementation version.
- Bridging fragments selectively: apply the same disclosed post-processing to every model or compare raw outputs only.
- Overinterpreting a benchmark ranking: limit the claim to the tested cohort, model set, split, and acquisition regime.
A reporting checklist for a credible paper or deployment review
- Held-out images were deduplicated across splits, with the deduplication unit documented.
- Test labels were not used for model, threshold, or post-processing selection.
- Positive, negative, thin-width, fragmented, source, and acquisition cohorts are counted.
- Width measurement and thin-width thresholds are defined before scoring.
- IoU and Dice are reported with micro or macro aggregation identified.
- A boundary metric includes its tolerance and implementation details.
- A connectivity metric includes its tolerance, neighborhood convention, and skeleton or path rule.
- False-positive rate or specificity is measured on verified negatives and hard negatives.
- In-domain and cross-source or cross-acquisition results are separated.
- Confidence intervals state the resampling unit and procedure.
- Per-source results and representative failure cases are available.
- Any dilation, closing, component filtering, or bridging is identical across models and disclosed.
The practical decision rule is straightforward: prefer the model whose complete profile matches the deployment task, not the model with the largest isolated overlap score. For thin cracks, that means checking contour and connectivity in the narrow-width strata. For fragmented traces, it means counting breaks and bridges. For field deployment, it means validating on the camera and scene regime that will actually generate images, including the images that contain no cracks.
