Avoided-emission credits are not interchangeable with atmospheric carbon dioxide removal. A framework label can narrow your search, but project-level documents and risk allocation determine whether a particular offer is credible.
Start by identifying the exact credit
Ask the seller for the project name, removal method, crediting standard, methodology version, registry, project-development document, issuance or delivery status, and the unit being sold. A “tonne” should mean one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent removed from the atmosphere after the project’s own emissions are deducted, but you must verify how that number is defined in the applicable methodology.

- Removal versus avoidance: removal physically takes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it. Avoidance prevents a projected emission, such as a future deforestation event, but does not remove carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere.
- Method: identify whether the offer involves biomass carbon storage, direct air capture, enhanced weathering, mineralization, biochar, ocean-based removal, afforestation or another pathway. Each has different measurement, energy, land, leakage and reversal risks.
- Status: distinguish issued credits from future-delivery contracts or reservations. An undelivered tonne carries construction, performance and delivery risk.
- Unit and claim: determine the vintage, location, project boundary and whether the seller is offering an environmental attribute, a retired credit or merely a promise to retire one later.
The University of Oxford Smith School’s private-sector report emphasizes that buyers must understand the method-specific risk profile, including reversal risk, before treating credits as equivalent. Read the report at Oxford Smith School’s carbon-removal report.

Read the methodology before the marketing summary
A project summary describes an intended outcome; the methodology specifies how the outcome is calculated, monitored and corrected. CDR.fyi describes the methodology as the detailed, method-specific rule set for quantification, monitoring, storage and risk management. Its buyer guide explains the MRV process at CDR.fyi’s MRV guide.

Check the system boundary
List every activity included in the calculation: feedstock production, electricity and heat, chemical inputs, equipment manufacture, transport, processing, injection or burial, monitoring and eventual closure. If an activity is outside the boundary, ask whether it is immaterial, separately accounted for or simply omitted. A credit that counts gross capture while excluding material upstream or downstream emissions is not a net removal.
Examine the baseline and counterfactual
The baseline is what the methodology says would happen without the project. For a waste-biomass project, that might be decomposition or combustion; for a land project, it could be continued agriculture or a different land-use trajectory. Look for evidence supporting that scenario rather than a convenient assumption that maximizes credits. A weak baseline can make a project appear to remove carbon that would have been stored or removed anyway.
Follow the carbon through the lifecycle
Check how the methodology treats feedstock origin, competing uses, leakage, energy consumption, transport distance, co-products and downstream storage. Ask for the calculation showing gross captured carbon, each deducted emission source and the resulting net tonnes. If the seller provides only a gross capture figure, the offer is not ready for a quality comparison.
Confirm monitoring requirements
Review what is measured continuously, periodically or by modelling; which instruments or sampling protocols are used; acceptable uncertainty; data-retention rules; and what happens when a measurement fails. A credible methodology defines corrective action instead of allowing missing data to pass as removals.
Test additionality instead of assuming it
Additionality asks whether the removal would occur without revenue from carbon credits. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) states: “The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or removals from the mitigation activity shall be additional, i.e., they would not have occurred in the absence of the incentive created by carbon credit revenues.” Read the full ICVCM Core Carbon Principles.

Questions to put to the developer
- Was the project already legally required, financed, built or commercially viable before credit revenue was expected?
- Does the financial model show a funding gap that credit revenue closes?
- What alternative would occur without the project: continued disposal, a different technology or no activity?
- When was the project decision made, and was the crediting incentive documented at that time?
- Does the methodology prevent projects from claiming credits for ordinary regulatory compliance or profitable business-as-usual activity?
Do not treat a developer’s statement that credits are “important” as proof. Look for the methodology’s counterfactual tests, investment analysis, legal requirements and evidence in the project documents. Additionality is a project-level conclusion, not a characteristic automatically supplied by a removal method.
Assess durability and the remedy for reversals
Storage can fail through fire, decay, leakage, equipment failure, geological migration or an operator’s abandonment. Compare the physical storage pathway with the contract’s remedy if stored carbon returns to the atmosphere.
ICVCM’s permanence principle says: “The GHG emission reductions or removals from the mitigation activity shall be permanent or, where there is a risk of reversal, there shall be measures in place to address those risks and compensate reversals.” The principle is quoted at ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles.
Build a durability profile
| Item | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Storage medium | Biomass, soil, biochar, mineral, geological reservoir or another sink | Determines the main physical reversal pathways |
| Stated duration | Credited storage period, monitoring period and any post-credit obligations | A “permanent” label is meaningless without a defined time and duty |
| Monitoring | Measurements, frequency, responsible party and public reporting | Reversals cannot be corrected if nobody is required to detect them |
| Remedy | Buffer pool, replacement credits, insurance, developer guarantee or other compensation | Shows who bears the cost if carbon is lost |
| Accountability | Named operator, registry rules and obligations after insolvency or project closure | Prevents an unfunded promise when the original seller disappears |
A buffer reserve is a remedy mechanism, not proof that reversal is impossible. ICVCM’s current methodology-assessment guidance requires 40 years of monitoring and compensation for certain high-reversal-risk methodologies, including specified forest-conservation and avoided-ecosystem-conversion categories. That is a requirement for those categories under that framework, not a universal guarantee that every carbon removal credit remains stored for 40 years or forever. See ICVCM’s methodology-assessment guidance for the scope.
Separate physical durability from contractual durability
A geological storage project may have a long physical residence time but weak contractual protection if the buyer receives no replacement credit after a reversal. Conversely, a shorter-lived biological store may offer a well-funded replacement obligation. Evaluate both the physical risk and the enforceability, funding and duration of the remedy.

- Validation report covering design, baseline and additionality.
- Verification report covering the monitoring period and credited tonnes.
- Monitoring plan, measurement data summary and uncertainty treatment.
- Registry record, issuance details and any correction, suspension or reversal notices.
- Stakeholder consultation records and responses to material comments.
RMI’s buyer guidance recommends using registry records and specialist third parties for supplemental quality, risk, governance, MRV and market information. Its June 2024 guide is available at RMI’s buyer guide. If a key document is unavailable, ask the developer why, request an alternative record and treat the information gap as a risk rather than filling it with assumptions.
Check the verifier’s role
Confirm that the validator and verifier are independent of the project developer and are approved or recognized under the relevant standard. Read the scope of each report: a verifier may have checked only a defined monitoring period, boundary or sample. “Third-party verified” does not mean every future tonne is verified in advance.
Trace the credit and prevent double counting
Every issued unit should have a unique serial number or equivalent registry identifier. Trace it from issuance through transfers to the account that will retire it. Check whether it was previously retired, cancelled, exported, pledged or listed in another claim.
ICVCM treats double counting as double issuance, double claiming or double use. A single tonne cannot be issued twice, claimed by both a seller and a buyer, or used for multiple retirement purposes. Confirm:

Retire before making a claim
Ownership in a trading account is not retirement. Retire the units in the registry, record the retirement number and retain the certificate with your purchase contract. Align public statements with the attribute actually retired; do not claim that your organization removed carbon if it bought a future-delivery promise that has not yet produced or retired credits.
Use safeguards and claims discipline
Quality is not only tonnes and permanence. Review land rights, worker safety, Indigenous and local-community engagement, grievance channels, biodiversity, water use and pollution. Ask whether the project could displace food production, restrict customary access or lock in carbon-intensive infrastructure. Look for documented consent or consultation, impact monitoring and a process for resolving complaints.
Keep marketing claims narrower than the evidence. “We funded a project expected to remove carbon” is different from “we removed 10,000 tonnes,” which requires delivered, verified and retired units. Claims rules vary by jurisdiction and program; this framework is not legal advice. Have counsel check the wording, accounting treatment and any interaction with national or sector-specific climate-claim guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Interpret the CCP label correctly
ICVCM says its label requires both a CCP-Eligible program and a CCP-Approved methodology. A program appearing on the eligible list does not by itself mean that every credit in that registry carries the label. Check the live assessment table at ICVCM’s assessment-status page for the program and methodology that cover the specific project.

Compare offers on the same decision axes
When two or more offers pass the basic document check, place their differences in a single comparison sheet. Do not compare a delivered, verified credit with an early-stage promise as if they were the same product.
| Axis | Offer A | Offer B | Buyer’s question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Removal method and net tonnes | Record the method and documented net calculation | Record the method and documented net calculation | What emissions were deducted, and who checked the calculation? |

| Delivered price | Price per delivered, verified and retired tonne | Price per delivered, verified and retired tonne | Are fees, taxes, currency, transfer and replacement costs included? |
No universal current price-per-tonne benchmark or delivery-to-purchase ratio is established by the sources used here. Treat a low quoted price as a prompt to inspect scope, maturity, delivery timing and risk allocation, not as evidence of better value. Calculate the all-in cost per tonne that is actually delivered and retired.
Review the purchase contract before paying
For issued credits
- Specify registry, project, methodology, vintage and serial numbers or a binding allocation rule.
- State who transfers and retires the units, by what deadline and with what evidence.
- Define treatment of invalidation, reversal, registry correction and duplicate issuance.
- Assign taxes, transfer fees, currency risk and any replacement-credit cost.
For future-delivery agreements
- Set delivery milestones, verification requirements and a long-stop date.
- Define acceptable substitutions, if any; a different method or project should not be substituted silently.
- Specify refunds, replacement units or termination rights for shortfall and non-delivery.
- State who bears construction, feedstock, energy, permitting, policy and reversal risk.
- Require notice of methodology changes, project suspension, insolvency and material safeguard incidents.
Ask for an information-rights clause allowing you to receive updated monitoring, verification and registry records. A contract that promises “equivalent carbon benefits” without defining equivalence leaves the most important decision to the seller after you have paid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical pre-purchase workflow
- Write the claim you intend to make. Decide whether you need a retired removal attribute, a future-delivery commitment or internal climate-risk information. This prevents buying a product that cannot support your intended statement.
- Request the primary records. Obtain the methodology, project document, validation and verification reports, monitoring plan, registry record, safeguards material and contract.
- Recalculate net tonnes. Reconcile gross capture, lifecycle deductions, uncertainty, leakage and any withheld buffer or reserve units.
- Challenge additionality. Compare the counterfactual with legal requirements, existing financing and the project’s investment decision date.
- Map reversal exposure. Draw the physical pathway from capture to storage, list failure modes, then match each to monitoring and a funded remedy.
- Check independent assurance. Confirm verifier independence, report scope, monitoring period and unresolved findings.
- Trace serial numbers. Follow units through the registry and verify that they are available and unretired.
- Score safeguards and claims. Record community, labor, land, water and biodiversity evidence, then have legal or compliance reviewers approve the proposed wording.
- Compare all-in delivered cost and timing. Include fees and the probability and consequence of non-delivery; do not use an unsupported market average.
- Retire and archive. Retire the exact units, save the certificate and retain the supporting records for the period required by your accounting and claims policies.
Warning signs that should pause a purchase
- The seller cannot name the methodology version, registry or project boundary.
- Only gross captured carbon is shown; lifecycle emissions and energy use are absent.
- Additionality is asserted but the baseline or financial counterfactual is not documented.
- “Permanent” storage has no duration, monitoring duty or reversal remedy.
- A verification logo appears without a report, monitoring period or verifier scope.
- Serial numbers are unavailable, pooled without allocation rules or already retired.
- The offer uses a program label but cannot identify an approved methodology for the project.
- Safeguard information is limited to a generic policy with no project-level consultation or grievance record.
- The contract allows broad substitutions or excuses delivery failure without a refund or replacement obligation.
- Urgency, scarcity or a very low price is used to discourage document review.
What a defensible purchase file contains
Keep a single file that lets another reviewer reproduce your decision. Include the dated offer and contract; methodology and project documents; lifecycle calculation; additionality analysis; validation and verification reports; monitoring and safeguard records; registry screenshots or certificates; serial numbers; retirement evidence; payment and fee records; and the exact public claim approved for use. Note the date you checked live program status because labels, prices, supply and legal guidance can change.
If material evidence remains unavailable, the defensible choices are to delay the purchase, reduce the volume to match verified supply, or obtain an independent assessment. A framework screen can identify promising offers, but it cannot substitute for project-level diligence.
