Evaluate Asian Paints in two separate stages: first, determine whether its business is stronger and more resilient than comparable paint makers; only then decide whether its share price is attractive. Use the same fiscal period, currency, accounting basis and definitions for every company, and reconcile exceptional items before comparing profits or valuation multiples.
Start by defining what “better” means
“Is Asian Paints better than Berger Paints or Kansai Nerolac?” has no single answer. A company can have a stronger distribution network and higher returns on capital while another has a lower valuation or faster recent growth. Separate the analysis into two judgments:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Business quality: competitive position, growth, margins, capital returns, cash conversion, balance-sheet risk and resilience.
- Share valuation: the price paid for those characteristics, based on normalized earnings and cash flow.
Do not turn a company comparison into an unsupported buy or sell call. A high-quality business can be overpriced, while a weaker business can look inexpensive for good reasons.

Which paint companies should you compare with Asian Paints?
A practical Indian listed peer group is Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Akzo Nobel India and Indigo Paints. A Value Research comparison page includes these companies, and a 2017 SEBI-filed prospectus names several of them as large industry participants. The prospectus is historical context, not a current market-share ranking.

These businesses are not identical. Decorative paints, industrial coatings, home-décor products and international operations have different economics. Before ranking companies, record each company’s segment mix, geography, reporting currency, fiscal year and whether the figures are standalone or consolidated.
| Company | Why it belongs in the starting set | Comparability issue to check |
|---|---|---|
| Asian Paints | Large Indian decorative-paint and home-décor business with international and industrial operations | Scale, segment breadth and consolidated subsidiaries can materially affect ratios |
| Berger Paints | Listed Indian paint peer with substantial decorative exposure | Different segment mix, scale and accounting presentation |
| Kansai Nerolac | Listed Indian coatings company with important industrial exposure | Industrial-cycle sensitivity can make margins unlike a decorative-heavy peer |
| Akzo Nobel India | Listed coatings company included in common peer screens | Exceptional items can distort reported profit and valuation ratios |
| Indigo Paints | Listed decorative-paint peer with a smaller revenue base | Smaller scale and different growth, distribution and reinvestment profile |
Add or remove companies only when the reason is explicit. For example, an industrial-coatings specialist may be a useful operating comparison but a poor benchmark for a decorative-paint margin. Keep a core peer set stable across periods so that you do not select whichever companies make Asian Paints look strongest.
Lock the comparison basis before collecting numbers
Most bad peer comparisons begin with mismatched data. Create a worksheet with these fields before copying any ratios:

Asian Paints’ investor page labels Q1 FY2026-27 sales and profit separately for standalone and consolidated reporting. Do not put those figures in one peer table without showing the basis.
Understand Asian Paints’ business mix before judging its ratios
Asian Paints’ FY2025-26 Integrated Annual Report reports decorative and home-décor revenue of ₹30,830.4 crore, or 86.8% of revenue; international revenue of ₹3,353.6 crore, or 9.4%; and industrial revenue of ₹1,332.4 crore, or 3.8%. These are company-reported segment figures for FY2025-26. The categories may overlap in how a group presents geography and business activity, so use the report’s segment definitions when comparing peers.

The same report states installed in-house decorative-paint manufacturing capacity in India of 2,290,000 kilolitres per annum. Capacity is not demand: test whether utilization, volumes, pricing, product mix and cash returns justify that footprint.
The company describes its strategy as an integrated products-and-services platform spanning decorative and home décor, international and industrial activities. It identifies brand building, regional-market initiatives, innovation, B2B expansion, services and backward integration as growth accelerators. Treat these as management’s strategic claims. The evidence test is whether volume, margins, capital returns and cash flow improve over subsequent reporting periods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMeasure growth without confusing price with demand
Begin with multi-year revenue growth, then separate the drivers. Revenue can rise because of higher prices, premiumization, acquisitions, currency movements or genuine volume growth. A flat revenue number can conceal volume gains offset by lower prices, or volume weakness hidden by price increases.
Use annual and quarterly comparisons correctly
- Compare the same quarter year on year to reduce seasonality distortions.
- Use sequential quarter comparisons only when the business has predictable seasonal patterns.
- Track at least three to five annual periods where filings permit, rather than one strong or weak year.
- Read management commentary and segment notes for price, volume and mix explanations.
- Check whether acquisitions, divestments or foreign-exchange movements changed the reported base.
Asian Paints’ latest supplied quarterly figures
For Q1 FY2026-27, Asian Paints reported standalone net sales of ₹9,156.5 crore, up 16.7% year on year, and standalone net profit of ₹1,478.4 crore, up 34.3%. It reported consolidated net sales of ₹10,521.4 crore and consolidated net profit of ₹1,539.3 crore. The supplied investor-page excerpt does not state a consolidated net-profit growth percentage, so do not calculate or imply one from the standalone percentage.
Obtain the complete result release and use the same basis and period for Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Akzo Nobel India and Indigo Paints. A consolidated Asian Paints number compared with a standalone peer can produce a false ranking.

Compare operating quality across a cycle
Margins matter only when you understand what produced them and whether they survive a downturn. Build a multi-year table for gross margin, EBITDA margin and EBIT margin, then annotate major changes with raw-material costs, price changes, promotional intensity, product mix, capacity utilization and exceptional items.

A Value Research page dated 4 September 2026 displayed FY figures including revenue of ₹37,186.93 crore for Asian Paints, ₹12,263.24 crore for Berger Paints, ₹8,263.47 crore for Kansai Nerolac, ₹3,590.90 crore for Akzo Nobel India and ₹1,385.31 crore for Indigo Paints. It displayed EBIT margins of 16.15% for Asian Paints, 12.32% for Berger Paints and 9.22% for Kansai Nerolac. These are dated secondary figures, not timeless values. Verify every number against the relevant audited filing and check whether the periods and definitions match.
| Operating question | What to calculate | What a strong result would mean | What can mislead you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can the company earn attractive margins? | Gross, EBITDA and EBIT margins over several years | Stable or improving margins through varied input-cost and demand conditions | One favorable raw-material period or a one-time gain |
| Do margins translate into efficient growth? | ROE, ROIC or return on capital employed, plus asset turnover | Profitable growth without disproportionate capital needs | High leverage inflating ROE or an unusually low equity base |
| Are earnings turning into cash? | Operating cash flow compared with net profit | Cash generation that broadly supports reported earnings over time | Working-capital release in one year or cash tied up in inventory and receivables |
| Does the franchise withstand competition? | Margin and return stability during weak demand | Limited deterioration and credible recovery without excessive discounting | Short-term promotions, channel loading or favorable mix |
Check returns on capital, not just profit growth
Return on equity can look impressive when a company carries debt or has a small equity base. Pair ROE with return on invested capital or capital employed and asset turnover. A company that grows profit by adding factories, warehouses and working capital should demonstrate that those assets earn an acceptable return.
For each peer, reconcile operating profit to the capital base used in the ratio. Decide whether to include leases, goodwill, investments, surplus cash and minority interests, and apply the same treatment across companies. If an aggregator’s definition is unclear, calculate the ratio from audited statements instead of presenting a false precision.
Test cash conversion and balance-sheet resilience
Compare debt, lease obligations, net cash or net debt, interest coverage, operating cash flow, capital expenditure and working-capital needs. A low-debt company can still consume cash through inventory, receivables or rapid expansion.

Working-capital checks
- Track receivable days and ask whether longer credit terms are being used to defend growth.
- Track inventory days and write-downs, particularly when product ranges expand.
- Compare supplier-credit changes with purchases; a temporary increase in payables can inflate operating cash flow.
- Review cash generated from operations against net profit over several years, not one reporting date.
The Value Research page presents debt, liabilities, operating cash flow, liquidity and receivable comparisons that are useful for screening. Use the companies’ cash-flow statements and notes for the final conclusion.
Normalize exceptional items before comparing profit
Exceptional items can reverse the apparent order of a peer group. The Value Research page displayed Akzo Nobel India’s net profit alongside a very large positive exceptional item. Reconcile that item to the audited statement, identify whether it is recurring, and compare continuing operations before drawing conclusions about margins, growth, P/E or cash earnings.
Apply the same rule to every company. Restructuring charges, asset sales, impairment reversals, tax settlements and gains on investments should be shown separately from recurring operating performance. Never use an unadjusted headline P/E to claim that one peer is cheaper when its earnings contain a one-time gain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Evaluate the moat and competitive response
Financial ratios describe outcomes; competitive analysis explains whether those outcomes can persist. Examine:
- Distribution: dealer reach, tinting infrastructure, replenishment and regional density.
- Channel economics: dealer and contractor incentives, credit terms, inventory turns and the cost of defending shelf space.
- Brand and product breadth: premium, mass-market, waterproofing, adhesives, décor and adjacent services.
- Manufacturing: plant location, utilization, logistics, backward integration and expansion commitments.
- Customer mix: retail decorative demand versus industrial, institutional and business-to-business contracts.
- Pricing power: ability to pass through input costs without losing volume or relying on heavy promotions.
Management commentary should generate hypotheses, not end the analysis. If Asian Paints says services, innovation or regional initiatives will accelerate growth, check later filings for measurable volume, margin, capital-return and cash-flow effects.
Best Value
In its FY2024-25 annual report, Managing Director and CEO Amit Syngle wrote: “It has been a challenging and rigorous year for the entire domestic coatings industry despite the steady levels of overall economic activity in the country. The year saw further tapering of demand, continuing from a similar trend in the previous year. As a result, the coatings industry recorded a revenue decline, ranging from low single-digit degrowth to a flat performance for the year.” This is dated management commentary, not an independently measured sector statistic. Compare the statement with each company’s reported volumes and results.
Use market-share data cautiously
No current, independently verified market-share series is established here. A search-result excerpt attributed to Euromonitor International for 2025 mentioned value shares of 21% for Asian Paints, 6% for Berger Paints and 4% for Kansai Nerolac in Indian home improvement, but the underlying report page was inaccessible. Do not use those figures as a verified market-share conclusion.
Market share also depends on the category definition: decorative paint, total coatings, home improvement, value or volume, India only or a wider geography. Prefer a clearly defined, current source and state its methodology and date.
Value the shares only after the operating work
Compare price-to-earnings, EV-to-EBITDA and price-to-book only after normalizing earnings and understanding cash generation. Use the same market-date timestamp, fiscal-period denominator and treatment of exceptional items for every peer.
| Multiple | Useful question | Important adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| P/E | How much are investors paying for recurring equity earnings? | Remove or separately show exceptional gains, unusual tax effects and depressed-cycle earnings |
| EV/EBITDA | How does the operating business compare before financing choices? | Include debt, leases and excess cash consistently; check capital intensity and maintenance spending |
| Price-to-book | How does market value compare with accounting equity? | Interpret alongside ROE, asset quality, goodwill and the relevance of book value to the business |
Multiples move with share prices and reported earnings. A comparison page dated 4 September 2026 is a historical snapshot, not a current quote or recommendation. Refresh market capitalization, earnings, net debt and all valuation ratios immediately before publication or investment use.
A repeatable evaluation workflow
- Set the question: decide whether you are comparing business quality, valuation or both.
- Choose the peers: begin with Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Akzo Nobel India and Indigo Paints; document exclusions.
- Align the data: match fiscal period, currency, standalone or consolidated basis and accounting definitions.
- Map the businesses: record decorative, industrial, international, home-décor and other segment exposure.
- Build the operating series: collect revenue, volume where disclosed, gross margin, EBITDA, EBIT and margin history.
- Test capital efficiency: calculate ROE and ROIC or return on capital employed with consistent definitions.
- Reconcile cash: compare operating cash flow with profit and inspect receivables, inventory, payables and capital expenditure.
- Normalize profit: identify exceptional items, discontinued operations, acquisitions, foreign-exchange effects and unusual tax charges.
- Assess the moat: test distribution, brand, product breadth, manufacturing, pricing and competitive investment against reported outcomes.
- Value the shares: compare normalized P/E, EV/EBITDA and price-to-book using one market date.
- Write the conclusion in two sentences: one for relative business quality and one for whether the current valuation compensates for the risks.
Common mistakes that produce bad conclusions
- Ranking companies by revenue alone, which rewards scale but says little about returns or cash.
- Mixing standalone Asian Paints results with consolidated peer results.
- Comparing a decorative-heavy company with an industrial-heavy company without adjusting expectations.
- Using one quarter to make a structural claim about demand or competitive strength.
- Treating management’s strategy language as proof of execution.
- Quoting an old prospectus as current market-share evidence.
- Ignoring exceptional items when comparing profit, P/E or growth.
- Using an aggregator’s ratio without checking its date, denominator and accounting definition.
- Assuming high capacity means high utilization or attractive returns.
- Confusing a cheaper multiple with a safer or better business.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A sound comparison might conclude that Asian Paints has stronger scale, a broad decorative and home-décor base and higher reported EBIT margin than selected peers in a dated snapshot, while noting that those observations require consistent periods and audited-file verification. It might separately conclude that the share price does or does not compensate investors for growth, margin, capital and competitive risks. Those are two different findings and should never be compressed into “better” without qualification.
Update quarterly results, annual financials, market capitalization, valuation ratios and any market-share claim before relying on the analysis. Keep the date and accounting basis beside every number so another reader can reproduce the comparison from company filings.
