The safest way to evaluate an Indian IT-services offer is to separate dependable recurring cash from conditional, deferred, employer-paid and one-time components. Calculate a realistic monthly take-home amount, identify what remains in year two, then assess the role, location, joining conditions and exit clauses. Do not accept a headline CTC, verbal promise or service bond until the complete terms are written and understandable.
Start with the number the offer really guarantees
“CTC” (cost to company) is an employer-cost measure, not a monthly salary. It may include amounts that never reach your bank account, such as the employer’s provident-fund contribution, gratuity provision, insurance premium and other benefits. It may also include target performance pay that depends on company or individual results.

Ask for an annual, component-level breakup before comparing the offer with another one. A useful breakup distinguishes the following:
Recommended Free Tools
| Component | What it means for you | How to treat it in a comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed annual gross | Predictable salary before employee deductions and tax | Use as the main recurring-cash figure |
| Employee deductions | Items such as employee PF, income-tax withholding, professional tax where applicable and other authorised deductions | Subtract when estimating monthly take-home |
| Employer PF, gratuity and insurance | Employer-side costs counted in CTC; they are not automatically monthly cash | List separately from salary |
| Variable or performance pay | Target or maximum amount subject to eligibility and performance rules | Do not treat as guaranteed salary |
| Joining, relocation or retention payment | Usually a one-time or delayed payment, sometimes with repayment conditions | Keep separate from recurring year-two income |
| Equity and other benefits | Potential value that may depend on vesting, liquidity, eligibility or continued employment | Record as risk-adjusted upside, not cash in hand |
An offer that states only an annual CTC can be technically accurate while still giving an incomplete picture of spendable income. The publication ofper makes this distinction in its offer-letter guidance. Your first request to HR should therefore be the full written breakup, not merely confirmation of the advertised package.

Calculate estimated monthly take-home
Use the fixed salary figures in the offer to build a candidate-specific estimate:
Estimated monthly take-home = monthly gross salary − employee PF − tax withholding − professional tax where applicable − other authorised deductions.
Ask HR for both the indicative monthly gross and the assumptions behind its take-home estimate. Tax outcomes depend on your circumstances and the tax rules in force when you are paid. Check the current guidance of the Income Tax Department and the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), and verify the figures with payroll or a qualified tax professional rather than relying on a generic online calculator.

Confirm whether the stated basic salary is monthly or annual, whether allowances are paid monthly, and whether any deduction begins only after you join. Ask for the treatment of unpaid leave, salary during notice, and any salary revision promised after probation. A payslip estimate that excludes an employer contribution but includes employee deductions is not the same as CTC.
Separate first-year money from recurring year-two value
One-time payments can make two offers look similar in the first year while leaving a very different recurring salary afterwards. Record at least four separate measures for each offer:
| Measure | Include | Exclude or flag |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring fixed annual gross | Guaranteed fixed salary before employee deductions and tax | Variable pay, employer costs and one-time payments |
| Estimated monthly take-home | Expected monthly net after the deductions applicable to you | Target bonuses and benefits that are not paid as salary |
| First-year likely cash | Recurring fixed cash plus bonuses or joining payments whose conditions and timing you understand | Uncertain targets, unconfirmed eligibility and benefits with no cash value |
| Recurring annual cash | Fixed cash that should continue after the first year | Joining, relocation and retention payments that do not recur |
Use the recurring annual figure when judging whether the job supports your regular expenses. Use first-year likely cash only for near-term planning, and label every assumption. A retention payment paid later may be unavailable if you resign before its vesting or payment date.

Interrogate variable pay instead of counting the target
Variable compensation is not guaranteed merely because it appears in the package. Ask HR for written answers to each of these questions:

- Who is eligible: all employees at the level, only certain teams, or employees who join by a specified date?
- Which individual, project, business-unit and company measures determine the payout?
- Can the amount be prorated for a late joining date, leave, transfer or partial performance period?
- When is it calculated and paid?
- Must you be employed, confirmed or not serving notice on the payout date?
- What payout range did employees at the relevant level or team receive recently?
- Can the company change the plan, defer the payment or withhold it during a performance review?
A historical payout range is useful context, but it is not a promise of your own result. If HR cannot explain the formula or eligibility in writing, classify the amount as uncertain upside rather than fixed income.
Check bonuses, equity and benefits for strings
Joining and relocation payments
Find out whether a joining or relocation payment arrives with the first payroll or after a waiting period. Read any repayment clause carefully: it may require repayment if you leave within a stated period, fail a background check, do not join, or are terminated for a specified reason. Ask whether the amount reduces over time and whether the repayment is gross or net of tax.
Retention payments
Confirm the service period, payment date, employment-status requirement and treatment during notice. A payment that is forfeited when you resign before the date is not equivalent to salary.
Equity and non-cash benefits
Record equity separately and ask about vesting dates, forfeiture on resignation, liquidity, valuation, tax treatment and the event that would allow you to sell. Do the same for insurance, meal benefits, transport, learning allowances and other benefits. A benefit may be valuable, but it should not be added to monthly cash unless the terms make that cash value certain.
Evaluate the job, not just the package
Role and level
Confirm the legal designation, internal level, reporting line and the skills expected in the first six to twelve months. Ask whether the role is tied to a named team or client project, or whether you can be assigned to any project after joining. Clarify how performance is measured and what promotion or progression normally depends on; do not rely on an informal promise that is absent from the written offer.

Location, work mode and schedule
Check the stated work location, remote or hybrid rules, expected office days, shift or on-call requirements, travel and transfer provisions. A “remote” description may still permit relocation or regular client-site work if the contract contains a broad mobility clause. Estimate commute, housing, food, relocation and childcare costs before comparing net pay.
Employment type and continuity
Verify whether the legal relationship is permanent, fixed-term, probationary, trainee or contract-based, and identify the entity that will employ and pay you. Ask what happens if the client project ends, the background check is delayed or you are placed in a waiting pool. Confirm the joining date, acceptance deadline and every pre-joining condition.
Read the joining, probation and notice provisions
- Joining conditions: Check background-check documents, degree or experience verification, medical requirements and any condition that allows the employer to withdraw the offer.
- Probation: Note its duration, whether it can be extended, how confirmation is communicated and whether pay or benefits differ during it.
- Notice: Record the notice period during probation and after confirmation. Ask whether the employer can require you to serve the full period and whether buyout is permitted.
- Buyout calculation: Confirm whether it is based on basic salary, gross salary or another figure, and who must approve it.
- Delayed joining: Ask whether postponing the joining date changes compensation, bonus eligibility, location or the validity of the offer.
- Working hours and leave: Read the applicable policy rather than assuming a standard schedule or leave balance.
Keep the offer letter, annexures, policy documents and every written clarification together. If a verbal promise conflicts with the document, ask for an amended document or an explicit written confirmation before signing.

Decide whether a bond or service agreement is acceptable
A bond is not a single standard contract. Its practical and legal effect depends on the exact wording, the stated purpose and the applicable Indian contract law. Do not assume that a clause is automatically enforceable or automatically invalid.
For any service commitment, make a separate record of:
- the length of the commitment;
- the exact amount the company may claim;
- whether the amount reduces as you complete service;
- the identifiable training, relocation or other cost to which the amount is tied;
- the events that trigger repayment, including resignation, termination, non-joining and failed verification;
- the notice and dispute-resolution process;
- whether the company can deduct the amount from final salary or other payments.
Ask for invoices, a description of the training and an explanation of how the claimed amount was calculated. If the potential liability is material, the term is unusually long, or the clause includes broad post-employment restrictions, obtain advice from a qualified Indian employment lawyer before signing. A general internet statement about “bond legality” cannot substitute for review of your document.

Review clauses that affect future work
Confidentiality and intellectual property
Check what information is confidential, how long the duty lasts, and whether you may keep personal work samples. Read who owns code, inventions, documentation and other work created during employment, including work created outside office hours or on personal equipment.
Outside work and conflicts
Look for restrictions on freelancing, open-source contributions, directorships, investments and work for clients or competitors. Ask whether written permission is available and what activity would be considered a conflict.
Post-employment restrictions
Identify non-solicitation, non-dealing, non-compete and client-contact language, along with its duration, geography and scope. The wording and applicable law matter; obtain legal advice when the restriction could limit your next job.
Termination
Read termination rights during probation and after confirmation, the grounds for immediate termination, notice or pay in lieu, treatment of pending variable pay and the effect on bonuses or equity. Also check what happens to company property, data and access when employment ends.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify that the offer and recruitment process are genuine
Before sharing sensitive documents or resigning from your current job, verify the legal employer and recruiter through contact details published on the employer’s official website or another trusted channel. Confirm that you completed genuine interviews and that the sender’s email domain and documents match the organisation.
A request for a registration fee, training fee, laptop charge, security deposit or any other hiring-related payment is a warning sign described in Indian offer-letter guidance. Do not transfer money merely to secure an interview, appointment letter or onboarding slot. Ask the organisation to confirm the offer through an independently obtained contact route.
Best Value
Use a comparison worksheet that exposes hidden trade-offs
Create one row for each offer and fill it from the written documents:
| Decision axis | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring fixed annual gross | Guaranteed salary before employee deductions and tax | Shows dependable earning power |
| Estimated monthly take-home | Candidate-specific net estimate and its assumptions | Shows what can support monthly spending |
| First-year likely cash | Fixed cash plus understood bonuses and joining payments | Helps with near-term planning |
| Recurring annual cash | Year-two fixed cash after one-time items are removed | Prevents a temporary package from looking permanent |
| Variable pay | Target, eligibility, formula, payout date and recent range | Measures uncertainty rather than headline upside |
| Equity and benefits | Vesting, liquidity, forfeiture, eligibility and practical value | Separates illiquid or conditional value from cash |
| Role and progression | Level, first project or client, manager, skills and review path | Captures career value |
| Life costs | Location, commute, relocation, schedule and family impact | Converts salary into real living cost |
| Exit friction | Probation, notice, buyout, bond, recovery and post-employment restrictions | Shows the cost of changing jobs later |
This worksheet prevents a higher CTC with large variable or illiquid components from being compared unfairly with a lower headline package that is mostly fixed salary. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on your cash needs, risk tolerance, career objectives and personal constraints.

A practical decision sequence
- Authenticate the offer. Verify the employer, recruiter, interview process and absence of hiring-related deposits.
- Rebuild the pay package. Separate fixed gross, employee deductions, employer costs, variable pay, one-time payments, equity and benefits.
- Calculate cash. Estimate monthly take-home and first-year likely cash using only understood conditions.
- Calculate durability. Remove one-time items and uncertain targets to see recurring year-two value.
- Price the job. Add commute, relocation, schedule and family costs; assess level, project, learning and progression.
- Price the exit. Record probation, notice, buyout, bond, recovery and post-employment restrictions.
- Resolve gaps. Send written questions and request corrected documents where necessary.
- Obtain advice when exposure is high. Use a qualified tax professional for complex tax questions and an employment lawyer for substantial bonds, clawbacks or restrictive clauses.
- Accept deliberately. Sign only the version you understand, retain every annexure and do not resign until the remaining joining conditions are clear.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Dividing CTC by twelve and calling the result in-hand salary.
- Adding target variable pay to guaranteed fixed salary.
- Counting a joining or retention payment as recurring year-two income.
- Ignoring the cost of relocation, commuting, shifts or a required office schedule.
- Accepting a bond without recording its duration, amount, reduction method and trigger events.
- Assuming a notice-period buyout is available without written approval and a stated calculation.
- Relying on a recruiter’s verbal assurance when the offer letter says something different.
- Sending money or sensitive documents before independently verifying the employer.
- Treating generic tax or legal advice as a conclusion about your particular contract.
When to pause before accepting
Pause and request clarification when the employer will not provide a component-level breakup, the monthly net estimate depends on unexplained assumptions, variable-pay rules are undisclosed, the legal employer is unclear, the role or location can change without limits, or a bond claims a substantial unexplained amount. A rushed acceptance deadline does not remove your need to understand the contract. If the company will not answer reasonable written questions, treat that unwillingness as a risk in the decision itself.
