A large in-ground resource or a strategic-mineral headline is not enough. Start with the latest qualified-person technical report, preserve resource classifications, verify that the ore can become a specification-compliant product, rebuild the economic model from its assumptions, and reconcile the sponsor’s schedule with regulators’ records.
What “investable” means in antimony mining
Investability is a chain, not a single number. The chain runs from legal control of a deposit to a reliable mineral estimate, a workable mine and process design, a saleable product, lawful operation, sufficient capital and an acceptable closure plan. A weakness at any link can destroy value even when grades look attractive.

Antimony may be produced as the primary commodity from an antimony deposit or recovered as a by-product of a gold or silver operation, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Economic geology and environmental characteristics of antimony deposits (July 1, 2021). Those are different underwriting cases: a primary-antimony project depends heavily on antimony revenue and product quality, while a by-product project may rely on another metal to carry much of the mine’s economics.

Historical supply concentration explains why investors pay attention to the metal, but it does not prove a particular project will succeed. The USGS reported that approximately 61% of world antimony mine production in 2018 came from China, followed by Russia at 20% and Tajikistan at 10%. Those figures describe 2018, not current market shares, and should not be used as a present-day price or supply forecast.

1. Define exactly what you are evaluating
Identify the asset and the rights behind it
Record the project owner, beneficial owners, corporate structure and the jurisdiction of every material asset. Confirm mineral tenure, surface ownership, royalties, streams, options, liens, earn-in obligations and expiration dates. Verify access roads, power corridors, water rights, easements and rights to build processing or waste facilities. A company may control a mineral claim without controlling the surface, water or infrastructure needed to develop it.
Determine whether the antimony is the project’s main payable product or a by-product. Read the latest technical report’s title, effective date, scope and qualified-person sign-offs. Some reports cover antimony economics directly; others mention antimony only as a component of a broader gold or silver operation. Do not transfer conclusions from one type of project to the other.
Check the disclosure framework and report date
For a U.S.-reporting mining registrant, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s S-K 1300 framework requires a technical report summary to support specified mineral-resource and reserve disclosure. The report date matters because drilling, prices, permits, ownership and costs can change quickly. Obtain the complete current filing, not just a presentation slide or an older summary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNote each qualified person’s relevant experience, professional affiliation and responsibility. Then list the report’s data sources: drill database, sampling and assay procedures, quality-control samples, geological domains, density measurements, grade-continuity interpretation, cut-off grade and estimation method. Ask what additional drilling, sampling or metallurgical work could materially change the estimate.
2. Read the resource estimate without overstating it
Resource categories are not interchangeable
Under the SEC framework, inferred resources have the lowest geological confidence and cannot be converted into mineral reserves. Indicated and measured resources have progressively higher confidence, but neither category is automatically economic. Combining inferred, indicated and measured tonnes or pounds into one headline number hides the uncertainty that matters most to an investor.

A mineral reserve is narrower than a resource. The SEC-filed Wharf Operations South Dakota technical report reproduces the definition: “A mineral reserve is an estimate of tonnage and grade or quality of indicated and measured mineral resources that, in the opinion of the qualified person, can be the basis of an economically viable project.” The indicated-and-measured qualification is essential. A large inferred resource is not a reserve and is not a forecast of mine production.
Audit the estimate’s assumptions
- Compare the report’s effective date with the latest drilling, assays, ownership changes and permitting events.
- Check whether reported tonnes, grade and contained antimony are shown separately for inferred, indicated and measured categories.
- Examine the cut-off grade and the assumed metal price, recovery, mining method and processing costs behind it.
- Review density, dilution, mining loss and the continuity assumptions used to model the deposit.
- Ask whether the estimate covers all ore types expected in the mine plan or only a better-understood subset.
- Identify data gaps that could move material between categories or remove it from the estimate.
Contained pounds are a geological calculation. They are not saleable pounds, payable pounds or cash flow. The mine will lose material through dilution, mining recovery, processing recovery, treatment terms, refining and rejected or off-specification product.
3. Prove the route from ore to a saleable product
Demand representative metallurgical testwork
Request testwork using samples that represent the ore types, alteration, grade range and variability expected over the proposed mine schedule. A single high-grade composite can produce an attractive laboratory result that does not represent the bulk of the ore. Look for testwork on variability samples, locked-cycle or equivalent flowsheet confirmation, impurity behavior and the effect of blending.
Follow the material through every stage:
- Mining and ore control, including dilution and stockpile management.
- Crushing, grinding, gravity, flotation, leaching or other proposed recovery steps.
- Concentrate or finished-product production, including moisture and transport specifications.
- Removal or management of deleterious elements that could trigger penalties or rejection.
- Refining, treatment and transport to the intended customer or market.
- Payment terms, payable metal, treatment and refining charges, penalties and settlement provisions.
Separate recovery from saleability
A reported recovery percentage does not establish that a buyer will accept the resulting material. Ask for the expected antimony grade, impurities, moisture, form and consistency of the product, and evidence that a credible processor or end user can handle it. A project may recover antimony technically but still fail to make a product that meets contract specifications or earns acceptable payable terms.
The S-K 1300 modifying factors expressly include processing, metallurgical, infrastructure, economic and marketing considerations. A pre-feasibility-level report example also treats selection of an effective processing method and an effective product-sale plan as study tasks. Treat any recovery, price or payable assumption that lacks representative testwork and a plausible buyer route as a major uncertainty.

Understand the market pathway
Ask whether the project has a binding offtake agreement, a non-binding memorandum, active customer testing or only a general statement that antimony is in demand. Read termination rights, minimum volumes, pricing formulas, quality penalties, delivery terms and counterparty credit provisions. Do not treat a strategic-mineral designation, a government program or an interested buyer as a completed sale contract.

4. Rebuild the economic case
Compare studies at the same maturity
Do not rank projects by headline net present value or internal rate of return until you know whether each number comes from a scoping study, pre-feasibility study or feasibility study. Study maturity affects engineering detail, cost confidence, reserve support and the amount of unresolved risk.
| Economic item | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Mine plan | What mining method, production rate, strip ratio, dilution, mining loss and schedule are assumed? |
| Metallurgy | What recovery is supported by representative testwork, and how does it vary by ore type? |
| Revenue | Which antimony price deck, payable percentage, treatment and refining charges, penalties and by-product credits are used? |
| Capital | What are initial, sustaining and expansion capital, working capital, contingency and owner’s costs? |
| Operating costs | What costs are assumed for mining, power, water, reagents, labor, transport, refining and general administration? |
| Fiscal terms | Which royalties, taxes, duties, withholding taxes and government payments are included? |
| Closure | Are reclamation, water treatment, monitoring and post-closure financial assurance included? |
Run sensitivities that expose the failure point
Recalculate the case, or inspect the report’s sensitivity tables, for lower antimony price, lower grade, lower recovery, higher capital, higher operating cost and schedule delay. Check whether one assumption dominates value. A project that works only at an optimistic price and perfect recovery has a different risk profile from one that remains viable across moderate downside cases.
Review foreign-exchange assumptions, inflation treatment, escalation, financing fees, interest during construction, working capital and contingency. Confirm whether the model is pre-tax or post-tax and whether the stated discount rate matches the risk and jurisdiction. Separate nominal from real dollars and keep currencies and effective dates consistent.
Understand what a reserve does and does not say
The SEC-filed Stibnite and Wharf report examples describe a reserve as the economically mineable portion of measured or indicated resources after applying modifying factors. Those factors include mine design, processing, infrastructure, economics, marketing, legal rights, environmental compliance, community matters and government approvals. A reserve therefore reflects a study case; it is not a guarantee of financing, construction or production.

5. Treat permits and schedules as dated evidence
Build a permit register
List every federal, state or provincial and local approval. For each, record the lead agency, application date, public-review stage, required studies, consultations, decision deadline, appeal rights and construction authorization. Separate an announced application, a permitting dashboard entry, a draft decision, a final decision, an expired appeal period and an actual authorization to build or operate.
Compare the sponsor’s schedule with agency-published milestones and identify the critical path. A target date that depends on unresolved water, wildlife, cultural-resource, reclamation or Indigenous consultation work is not a firm construction date.
Use the Antimony Ridge example correctly
On April 7, 2026, the Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council announced that the Antimony Ridge Project had received FAST-41 transparency project status and identified the U.S. Forest Service as the federal permitting lead. The announcement said the sponsor planned bulk sampling and drilling after approval of its Plan of Operations and cited a minimum of 500 tons of high-grade ore anticipated for extraction from a historic pit area.
Those are dated agency-reported plans and expectations. They do not establish that the Plan of Operations was approved, that bulk sampling occurred, that the 500 tons were extracted, or that the material was commercially saleable. Emily Domenech, the council’s executive director, said, “I am thrilled to welcome the Antimony Ridge Mine project as the 56th FAST-41 mining project.” That is an attributed statement about the project’s permitting transparency status, not an independent finding on economics.
6. Price environmental, community and closure liabilities
Test waste and water risks
Review baseline water studies, site water balance, waste-rock and tailings characterization, acid-generation testing, contaminant-mobility results and proposed treatment systems. The USGS identifies acid-generating potential in solid mine waste as a general mining risk and discusses additional environmental issues associated with antimony. Require evidence on the project’s own rock and process residues rather than relying on a generic statement that antimony is a strategic mineral.
Best Value
Inspect the closure design: final slopes, waste and tailings covers, water treatment duration, monitoring, reclamation success criteria, post-closure maintenance and financial assurance. Determine who pays if closure costs rise or the operator fails. Include historic contamination and third-party legacy liabilities in the legal review.
Check people, land and water obligations
Identify affected communities, Indigenous groups, consultation status, agreements, cultural-resource constraints, land-access terms and grievance mechanisms. Read commitments made in environmental documents and permits, then compare them with the cost model and schedule. The S-K 1300 modifying factors include environmental compliance, plans or agreements with local individuals or groups, legal matters and governmental factors.
The USGS notes battery recycling as an important reuse route for antimony, while other uses do not lend themselves to recycling. That distinction can affect long-term waste and market assumptions, but it does not remove site-specific closure duties.

7. Determine how much funding is really required
Build a milestone-by-milestone cash forecast
Estimate spending from today through the next value milestone, construction, commissioning and ramp-up. Include drilling, metallurgical work, permitting, engineering, land acquisition, owner’s costs, working capital, reclamation security and contingency. Compare the forecast with unrestricted cash, committed facilities and their expiry dates.
Test the financing assumptions
- Identify expected equity dilution, debt drawdowns, interest, covenants and security.
- Distinguish binding commitments from announced intentions, non-binding term sheets and strategic discussions.
- Read conditions attached to grants, government support, offtake prepayments or partner funding.
- Model delays, cost overruns and a weaker price environment before assuming the next financing will be available.
- Check whether the sponsor has the management and construction capacity to deploy the capital on schedule.
An announced grant, strategic interest or inclusion in a government program is not equivalent to committed project finance unless legally binding terms, conditions and funding mechanics are documented.
8. Compare projects on a like-for-like basis
When several projects are under consideration, use a common comparison sheet rather than ranking promotional headlines.
| Comparison axis | What to normalize |
|---|---|
| Geology | Resource categories, cut-off grade, contained antimony and technical-report effective date. |
| Project role | Primary antimony revenue or by-product recovery from gold or silver. |
| Metallurgy | Representative recovery, variability, product specification, impurities and payable terms. |
| Study maturity | Study type, reserve support, engineering definition and cost contingency. |
| Economics | Price deck, currency, discount rate, taxes, royalties, capital, operating costs and sensitivity cases. |
| Permits | Tenure, applications, agency milestones, approvals, appeals and remaining critical-path work. |
| Environment | Water treatment, waste chemistry, closure design, financial assurance and community obligations. |
| Funding | Cash, committed financing, total remaining capital and assumptions requiring new funding. |
| Execution | Power, water, roads, labor, equipment lead times, construction management and commissioning risks. |
Keep units, currencies, price assumptions and effective dates consistent. If one study uses a different price deck, recovery basis or tax treatment, explain the mismatch instead of presenting headline values as directly comparable.

Red flags that should stop a casual investment thesis
- A presentation combines inferred, indicated and measured material into one “resource” without classification.
- Contained antimony is emphasized, but recovery, impurities, payable terms or a buyer are absent.
- A study uses a high price or recovery with no sensitivity case or representative testwork.
- A permit announcement is described as approval to build or produce.
- Closure, water treatment, acid-generation testing or financial assurance receives little or no cost allowance.
- The project schedule assumes financing, equipment or infrastructure that is not contractually secured.
- The latest technical report is old, superseded or narrower than the sponsor’s current claims.
- Ownership, royalties, surface access or water rights are described vaguely.
Bottom line: the investability test
An antimony project clears a serious first-pass diligence test only when five answers are documented: what material is geologically reliable; how much becomes a specification-compliant, payable product; which permits and social obligations remain; what the fully burdened mine and closure case costs under downside scenarios; and how the sponsor will fund and execute the work. If any answer depends on an inferred resource, unproven recovery, future approval, hypothetical offtake or uncommitted financing, treat the project as an early-stage speculation rather than an established mine investment. This framework evaluates project evidence; it does not predict investment returns or recommend a security.
