ARR, bookings, usage, and management forecasts can explain the business, but they cannot replace reported revenue. A useful conclusion combines revenue quality, compute-adjusted margins, operating leverage, liquidity, and a runway stress test.
Start with audited GAAP revenue
The latest audited annual filing, quarterly filing, or prospectus is the anchor for the analysis. Begin with the consolidated income statement, then read the revenue-recognition note and the business description before using any investor presentation metric.

Build a revenue fact sheet
Record these items for the latest period and at least two comparable prior periods:
- Total GAAP revenue and year-over-year growth.
- Product, subscription, usage, hardware, implementation, maintenance, and professional-services revenue, if separately disclosed.
- Geographic revenue and the share generated by the largest customers.
- Contract duration, renewal terms, minimum commitments, and variable consideration.
- Deferred revenue and remaining performance obligations (RPO).
- Usage-based or consumption-based components whose timing can differ from contracted value.
- Any acquisitions, divestitures, or changes in reporting segments that make period-to-period comparisons less reliable.
Revenue is recognized when performance obligations are satisfied, not simply when a contract is signed or cash is collected. C3.ai’s audited filing illustrates the issue: its auditor treated the evaluation of performance obligations as a critical audit matter. That does not mean the reported revenue is wrong; it means the accounting judgments deserve close reading instead of a headline-growth assumption.

Separate timing from economics
A customer may sign a multiyear contract, pay an annual invoice in advance, consume computing capacity gradually, or buy a one-time implementation. Those events affect bookings, cash, deferred revenue, and recognized revenue differently. A strong analysis maps the contract lifecycle: signing, activation, delivery, billing, collection, renewal, and expansion. If the company reports only a large contract value without explaining activation and recognition, treat the figure as a sales indicator rather than current revenue.
Test whether revenue is recurring and durable
Do not put ARR, bookings, billings, consumption, deferred revenue, and GAAP revenue in one undifferentiated growth chart. They answer different questions.
Know what each metric measures
| Metric | What it can tell you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| GAAP revenue | Revenue recognized under the company’s accounting policies for the period. | That the same amount will recur next period. |
| ARR | An annualized value of recurring revenue from active contracts, usually measured at a point in time. | That the amount will be recognized as GAAP revenue, collected, or renewed. |
| Bookings | Contracted orders or commitments recorded under the company’s definition. | Delivery, activation, collection, or future margin. |
| Billings | Amounts invoiced to customers. | That the underlying performance obligation has been satisfied. |
| Consumption | Usage of an AI service, such as inference calls or compute hours. | Stable future demand or a fixed annual revenue level. |
| Deferred revenue | Cash or invoices associated with obligations not yet recognized as revenue. | Profitability, renewal, or the timing of future delivery. |
| RPO | Remaining contracted performance obligations under the company’s disclosure rules. | That every obligation will be recognized on the disclosed schedule. |
An investor deck defines ARR as the annual value of recurring revenue from active contracts and states that ARR should be viewed independently of revenue and deferred revenue. QumulusAI likewise describes forward ARR as a supplemental operating metric and warns that it is not necessarily indicative of future revenue under U.S. GAAP. These qualifications are material: a rapidly rising ARR line can coexist with flat reported revenue when contracts have not activated, delivery is staged, usage is uncertain, or a large portion is nonrecurring.

Reconcile ARR to reported results
- Write down the beginning ARR balance and the company’s definition, including exclusions for pilots, services, hardware, or usage.
- Add new customer ARR, expansion, price changes, and acquired ARR only when the company defines them consistently.
- Subtract churn, downgrades, and contracts that expired or were terminated.
- Compare the resulting ending ARR with recognized revenue, deferred revenue, RPO, billings, and operating cash flow for the same period.
- Investigate a widening gap between ARR growth and revenue growth. Ask whether the cause is contract activation, implementation timing, annualization of recent usage, acquisitions, or a change in the metric.
- Check renewal cohorts and net revenue retention rather than relying only on the average customer count.
Revenue quality is stronger when growth comes from repeat renewals, expansion by existing customers, diversified contracts, and cash collections that follow the reported revenue. It is weaker when growth depends on one-time hardware, implementation fees, promotional credits, a single unusually large customer, or contracts that have not begun generating recognized revenue.
Check customer concentration and contract activation
Read the concentration footnote and major-customer discussion. A company can report impressive growth while one customer, cloud partner, government program, or reseller supplies a large share of revenue or receivables. Note whether the customer has termination rights, minimum volume commitments, or a relationship that is still a pilot. Concentration is not automatically bad, but it changes the probability distribution around renewal and cash collection.

Calculate gross margin after the real cost of AI delivery
Gross margin is calculated as (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue. For an AI company, the useful question is not only the percentage but what sits inside cost of revenue and how that cost behaves as demand scales.
Disaggregate cost of revenue
| Cost category | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| GPU or accelerator capacity | Is capacity owned, reserved, rented on demand, or supplied by a related party? Are utilization and minimum commitments disclosed? |
| Cloud hosting | Are inference, storage, networking, and egress charges rising faster than revenue? Are credits or discounts temporary? |
| Data-center power and space | Are power prices, colocation fees, cooling, and capacity expansion pushing unit costs higher? |
| Networking and storage | Does higher model traffic create significant bandwidth or storage expense? |
| Support and operations | Are customer-support, site-reliability, and deployment personnel classified in cost of revenue or operating expense? |
| Depreciation and warranty | Will owned servers create rising depreciation, repair, or warranty costs as the installed base grows? |
| Product mix | Is growth coming from high-margin software, lower-margin managed service, hardware, or professional services? |
Cerebras Systems reported a 39.0% gross margin in 2025 versus 42.3% in 2024 in its 2026 filing, attributing part of the decline to higher data-center costs for cloud inference capacity. The example shows why a growing AI business can experience margin compression even while revenue rises: infrastructure must be purchased or reserved before utilization reaches an efficient level, and the cost of serving larger or more complex models can increase with usage.

Some investor materials present a non-GAAP gross margin that excludes items such as stock-based compensation and acquired-intangible amortization. Keep the GAAP figure as the primary measure, show the reconciliation, and explain whether excluded costs are recurring. Removing an expense can help compare operating performance, but it does not remove the cash, dilution, or replacement cost associated with that expense.
Look for unit economics, not a single percentage
Where the company discloses them, track revenue per inference, cost per inference, GPU utilization, contribution margin by product, and gross profit per customer cohort. A stable company-wide margin can hide a deteriorating usage business if high-margin licenses subsidize low-margin inference. Conversely, a temporary margin decline may be rational if new capacity is being commissioned and utilization is expected to improve. The filing should provide enough evidence to distinguish an investment phase from structurally weak pricing.
Measure operating leverage
After gross profit, examine research and development (R&D), sales and marketing (S&M), and general and administrative (G&A) expense both in dollars and as a percentage of revenue.

Track the three operating functions
- R&D: Determine whether model training, safety work, data acquisition, and engineering headcount are generating products that can be sold repeatedly. Separate investment in a new model or platform from maintenance of the current product when disclosure permits.
- S&M: Compare sales capacity, customer acquisition cost, contract size, renewal, and payback. A surge in bookings accompanied by sharply higher S&M may not create operating leverage.
- G&A: Watch public-company compliance, legal, insurance, and infrastructure costs. Some costs move from G&A to cost of revenue as the company scales, so classification changes require a restated comparison.
Inspect stock-based compensation, depreciation, cloud commitments, and capacity reservations. The key test is whether each incremental dollar of revenue produces more gross profit while operating expenses grow more slowly than gross profit. A company can be loss-making yet improving if that relationship is sustained; it can also show fast revenue growth while becoming less efficient if every additional dollar requires a larger infrastructure and sales outlay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCalculate cash burn and runway correctly
Net loss is not cash burn. Noncash depreciation, stock-based compensation, deferred tax items, and working-capital changes can make the income statement diverge materially from cash movement.
Use a broad, repeatable burn definition
A Hong Kong Exchange prospectus defines cash burn as the aggregate of net cash used in operating activities, capital expenditures, and lease payments. This is a useful broad measure for an AI company because owned servers, data-center build-outs, and leased capacity can consume cash even when they do not appear immediately as operating expense.
Calculate the measure from the cash-flow statement and capital-expenditure and lease disclosures:
- Start with net cash used in operating activities for the period.
- Add cash capital expenditures for servers, networking, facilities, and other property or equipment.
- Add lease payments, including capacity or facility commitments that are economically necessary to deliver the service.
- Exclude financing inflows and outflows from the burn calculation, but show them separately so a recent fundraise is not mistaken for internally generated cash.
- Normalize unusual working-capital movements, one-off legal costs, acquisition payments, customer prepayments, and other items that are unlikely to repeat.
State clearly whether your reported burn is actual trailing cash use or a normalized operating estimate. Both are useful: actual burn shows what happened, while normalized burn helps estimate what the company may need to fund under ordinary operations.

Calculate runway
Runway in months = available cash and liquid investments ÷ normalized monthly burn. Use unrestricted cash and marketable securities that can realistically fund operations. Do not count undrawn debt, customer deposits restricted for a purpose, or expected financing until access is legally and practically available.
Use the latest quarter or trailing four-quarter cash-flow data, explain the averaging period, and adjust for a planned capacity expansion. If burn is seasonal or collections are lumpy, a simple three-month average can be misleading; use a monthly cash schedule when the filings provide enough detail.
Present explicit scenarios
| Scenario | Assumptions to vary | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Base case | Current growth, observed gross margin, normal collections, and already funded capacity. | Expected time to reach the next operating milestone if conditions remain similar. |
| High-compute-cost case | Higher GPU, cloud, power, networking, or colocation costs and slower utilization gains. | Whether infrastructure inflation can consume the cash cushion. |
| Slower-growth case | Delayed customer activation, lower renewals, weaker expansion, or slower collections. | How much fixed R&D, sales, and capacity expense remains when revenue disappoints. |
| Financing-delay case | No new equity or debt until after the planned raise date, with issuance assumptions removed from available liquidity. | Whether the company can reach the raise without distressed terms or emergency cuts. |
| Capacity-expansion case | Planned servers, leases, data-center deposits, or minimum cloud commitments are paid before demand fully arrives. | Whether growth requires a second funding event even if reported revenue is rising. |
The cited prospectus presents different runway outcomes with and without IPO proceeds. That structure is the right discipline: show the company’s self-funded runway first, then show how a financing changes it. A financing-dependent runway is not the same as operating runway.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare two AI companies on identical axes
Comparison is meaningful only when definitions, periods, currencies, and accounting classifications match. Do not rank one company’s ARR against another company’s GAAP revenue.
| Axis | What to collect from each company | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth and mix | Total growth, product versus services, hardware, usage, geography, and acquisitions. | Shows how much growth is repeatable and how much may carry different margins. |
| Recurring or usage-based share | ARR definition, renewal rates, consumption exposure, deferred revenue, and RPO. | Indicates visibility, but not guaranteed future GAAP revenue. |
| Customer concentration | Largest customers, reseller dependence, receivables concentration, and contract terms. | Measures downside if one relationship changes. |
| Gross margin and trend | GAAP margin, non-GAAP reconciliation, infrastructure costs, and product mix. | Shows whether scale is improving or worsening delivery economics. |
| Operating-expense growth | R&D, S&M, G&A, headcount, stock compensation, and expense as a percentage of revenue. | Tests operating leverage. |
| Operating cash flow | Reported cash from operations and normalized cash from operations. | Separates recurring cash generation from working-capital timing. |
| Capex and leases | Servers, facilities, deposits, minimum commitments, and lease payments. | Reveals investment needs omitted by a net-loss comparison. |
| Free cash flow | Operating cash flow less capex, with lease treatment stated. | Useful only when both companies use the same definition. |
| Liquidity and financing | Cash, marketable securities, debt maturities, covenants, dilution, and committed facilities. | Determines whether the company can fund the plan without a forced raise. |
| Capacity commitments | GPU reservations, cloud minimums, power, data-center contracts, and cancellation rights. | Shows fixed-cost risk if demand slows. |
IBM’s 2026 annual filing describes software ARR as a management metric calculated from recurring revenue and used to assess segment health. That is informative for trend analysis, but it remains a management metric rather than a substitute for reported revenue. Apply the same rule to every company in the comparison.
Best Value
Normalize the comparison
- Use the same fiscal period or explain the mismatch.
- Convert currencies consistently and identify the exchange-rate convention.
- Separate organic growth from acquisitions and divestitures.
- Use GAAP figures for the headline comparison, then show non-GAAP measures with reconciliations.
- Compare burn in absolute dollars and as a percentage of revenue; a larger company may have larger burn but lower burn intensity.
- Adjust for different lease classifications and capitalized development policies before drawing a free-cash-flow conclusion.
Interpret the combined profile
A durable AI business usually combines revenue that renews or expands, gross margin that is stable or improving after compute costs, operating expenses that grow more slowly than gross profit, and enough liquidity to reach breakeven without repeated distressed financing. No single threshold proves quality; the trend and the explanation matter.
| Profile | Signals | Follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| Strengthening economics | GAAP revenue grows with renewals, gross margin recovers as utilization rises, burn per incremental dollar of revenue falls, and liquidity covers the plan without a near-term raise. | Are these improvements repeatable across cohorts and capacity cycles? |
| Growth with infrastructure pressure | Revenue and ARR rise, but GPU, cloud, power, or lease costs push gross margin down. | What utilization, pricing, or model-efficiency improvement is required to reverse the margin trend? |
| Promotional or timing-driven growth | Forward ARR or bookings increase while recognized revenue, collections, or deferred-revenue conversion lag. | When do contracts activate, and what renewal evidence supports the annualization? |
| Financing-dependent expansion | Large capacity commitments and persistent operating cash outflow leave a short self-funded runway. | Can the company raise capital before the stress case occurs, and on what dilution or debt terms? |
| Concentrated risk | A small number of customers, partners, or government contracts account for a large share of revenue or receivables. | What happens to margin and runway if the largest relationship is delayed or lost? |
Common analytical mistakes and how to correct them
Treating ARR as revenue
Correction: show ARR beside, not instead of, GAAP revenue, deferred revenue, RPO, and cash collections. Preserve the company’s definition and measurement date.
Using net loss as burn
Correction: start with operating cash flow, add capex and lease payments, and normalize exceptional working-capital movements. Explain treatment of stock compensation and other noncash items.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ignoring infrastructure outside cost of revenue
Correction: read lease, purchase-commitment, and capex notes. A cloud minimum or data-center deposit can create a cash obligation before the related revenue appears.
Comparing non-GAAP margins without reconciliations
Correction: place GAAP gross margin first, list every exclusion, and assess whether the excluded item recurs or requires cash replacement.
Assuming a financing will happen
Correction: calculate runway with existing liquidity, then add a separate financing case. Include timing, dilution, debt service, covenants, and the possibility of a delayed or unavailable market.
Projecting one quarter indefinitely
Correction: use several quarters, identify seasonality, and test customer activation, renewal, collections, utilization, and capacity costs under slower-growth and high-cost scenarios.
A practical review sequence
- Download the latest audited filing and interim filing.
- Extract GAAP revenue, cost of revenue, operating expenses, cash, debt, capex, and lease payments into a period-by-period worksheet.
- Read the revenue-recognition, customer-concentration, commitments, stock-compensation, and liquidity notes.
- Record the precise definitions and dates for ARR, bookings, billings, usage, RPO, and any non-GAAP margin.
- Reconcile ARR and bookings to revenue, deferred revenue, RPO, receivables, and collections.
- Calculate GAAP gross margin and identify the infrastructure and product-mix drivers of each change.
- Calculate operating-expense ratios and determine whether gross profit is growing faster than the expense base.
- Calculate actual and normalized burn, then divide available liquidity by normalized monthly burn.
- Run base, high-compute-cost, slower-growth, financing-delay, and capacity-expansion cases.
- Write the conclusion as a set of linked observations: revenue durability, margin direction, operating leverage, burn intensity, liquidity, and financing risk.
The final judgment should explain not merely whether the company is growing, but what must be true for that growth to become durable cash generation. If the answer depends on a metric that is not GAAP revenue, an infrastructure cost that is not yet visible in the income statement, or a financing that has not been secured, state that dependency plainly.
