An AI agent identity management platform is worth buying only if it does more than create a service account. It should give every agent a distinct, attributable identity; issue and revoke tightly scoped credentials; enforce authorization at the tool and data boundary; preserve the human or service principal behind delegated work; and produce tamper-evident evidence of each decision and action.
Evaluate those capabilities with real workflows, not a feature-name checklist. NIST’s current concept work and preliminary guidance treat agent identification, delegation, authorization, provenance, and prompt-injection impact as active design questions, so a vendor label such as “agent IAM” does not prove coverage.

What an AI agent identity platform must control
An agent is a software workload that can interpret a goal, choose tools, and take actions over time. Its security identity therefore has to survive more than one API call. A useful platform connects five controls:
- Identity: a distinct record for the agent, workload, or ephemeral task instance, with an accountable owner and purpose.
- Authentication: cryptographic proof that the workload presenting a credential is the expected agent in the expected execution context.
- Authorization: a separate decision about whether that agent may perform a particular action on a particular resource under current conditions.
- Delegation: a verifiable chain showing who or what authorized the work, including the originating human when the agent acts on someone’s behalf.
- Evidence and response: records that connect identity, policy, approval, action, result, and revocation or investigation steps.
These controls must be enforced outside the model’s own reasoning loop. An agent can request an action, but it must not be the authority that expands its own permissions. The policy decision point and the enforcement points at tools, APIs, data stores, and retrieval systems should remain under organizational control.

Why a service account alone is not enough
A shared human login or a static, broad token makes attribution and containment difficult. If an agent, operator, or compromised integration uses the same credential, an investigation cannot reliably establish who acted or what should be revoked. A single long-lived token also turns prompt injection or a stolen secret into access to every system covered by that token.
A dedicated service account is an improvement, but it answers only part of the problem. You still need to know which deployed instance used it, what task it was performing, whose authority it was using, which policy version permitted the action, and whether the permission should have changed when the task changed. The account must also have a lifecycle: issuance, renewal, rotation, expiry, emergency revocation, and retirement when the workload shuts down.
Understand the standards status before comparing products
There is no single settled “AI agent IAM” standard. NIST’s agent identity concept work asks open questions about essential metadata, delegated authority, binding an agent to a human identity, tamper-proof action logs, and prompt-injection impact. NIST’s public-comment summary identifies workload identity, sender-constrained credentials, authorization decision interfaces, event sharing, provenance, and delegation binding as important building blocks, while noting that agent-specific profiles are still being developed.

NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Artificial Intelligence, initial preliminary draft (December 2025), says in control PR.AA-05: “AI systems should be treated separately from other types of entities within a network and require their own set of permissions and authorization policies.” Treat that document as a preliminary profile, not a final certification target. NIST also describes agent authenticator work as early phase and recommends evaluating existing IAM practices against current standards and best practices.
For implementation, established mechanisms are more dependable than a proprietary “agent identity” label. The NIST comment summary names OAuth Demonstration of Proof-of-Possession (DPoP) and mutual TLS with workload identity as mature building blocks. OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) calls for short-lived, minimally scoped, cryptographically signed tokens, explicit allow-lists or default-deny controls, policy decision point isolation, step-up authentication for critical operations, and structured decision metadata. The question is how a platform composes those mechanisms for your workflows.
Eight buying criteria that expose real capability
1. Identity inventory and ownership
Start by asking what exactly receives an identity. A production deployment may contain a persistent orchestrator, several model-backed workers, short-lived task agents, tool adapters, and child agents. The platform should let you distinguish those entities rather than collapsing them into one application account.
Inspect the directory or inventory record for each representative agent. It should support, at minimum, an owner, business purpose, environment, capabilities, lifecycle status, and relevant model or runtime provenance. NIST’s concept paper treats the question of which metadata is essential—and which fields should vary by task—as unresolved. Evaluate whether the platform can model that uncertainty instead of forcing every workload into a static template.
Tests to run
- Register a persistent agent and an ephemeral task identity. Confirm that both are attributable in logs.
- Change an owner, purpose, environment, or runtime and verify that the change is versioned.
- Stop a workload and search for credentials, sessions, queues, and child identities that remain active.
- Deliberately deploy an unknown agent and confirm that discovery, quarantine, or an ownership exception is generated.
Good results include an inventory view, ownership attestation, lifecycle states, and orphan detection. A dashboard that lists only applications or service accounts is not an agent inventory.

2. Authentication and credential lifecycle
Trace one credential from deployment through shutdown. The platform should issue a credential only after the workload and execution context are verified, bind it to the expected workload where possible, and support renewal, rotation, expiration, and immediate revocation. Prefer short-lived credentials with the smallest practical scope. Sender constraints such as DPoP or mutual TLS reduce replay risk because possession of a bearer string alone is not sufficient.
Ask whether a credential is bound to a specific runtime, cluster, region, device, or attested workload, and what happens when the agent moves. Test emergency revocation against a long-running session: does the next tool call fail, or can an already issued token continue for its full lifetime? Determine how clock skew, failed renewal, key compromise, and control-plane outages are handled.
Evidence to request
- An issuance and renewal sequence for a new task.
- Rotation records showing old credentials becoming unusable.
- Revocation behavior for active sessions and queued work.
- Cryptographic verification details and replay protections.
- Separate treatment of development, test, and production credentials.
OWASP AISVS specifically favors short-lived, minimal-scoped, cryptographically signed tokens in federated or multi-system deployments. A platform that relies mainly on static secrets in environment variables fails this criterion even if it calls the secret an “agent credential.”

Authentication answers “which workload is this?” Authorization answers “may it perform this action on this resource now?” Evaluate those decisions independently. Policies should express the agent, action, resource, task scope, environment, risk signals, and delegated authority as needed. Default-deny or explicit allow-lists are appropriate for sensitive tools.
Test enforcement at the actual boundary: the API gateway, function, database, file store, retrieval index, ticketing system, or cloud control plane. A model-side instruction such as “do not delete production data” is not an authorization control. The policy decision point should be isolated from the agent execution environment, and policy enforcement points should reject calls even when the model is manipulated.
Representative authorization tests
- Allow a read operation on an approved dataset and verify the decision at the data service.
- Attempt the same operation against an unapproved dataset and confirm a denial, not merely a warning in the agent transcript.
- Attempt a write operation when the task was issued read-only.
- Change the risk context, resource classification, or task scope and confirm that authorization is re-evaluated.
- Try to have the agent call its own policy or credential administration interface and verify that privilege expansion is blocked.
NIST IR 8596’s preliminary draft calls for AI systems to have their own permissions and authorization policies and applies least privilege. OWASP AISVS adds explicit allow-list or default-deny controls and policy decision point isolation. Use those statements as control expectations, not as proof that any particular product implements them.
4. Delegation and human context
Many agent workflows begin with a human request and pass through an orchestrator, one or more sub-agents, and downstream tools. Draw that chain before evaluating a platform. At every hop, identify the caller, the authority being delegated, the allowed actions, the target resources, and the expiry.
When an agent acts “on behalf of” a person, the effective authorization should remain linked to that human or to the service principal that legitimately initiated the work. A child agent should inherit a narrower scope, not silently receive the parent’s full rights. Crossing a trust boundary, moving from read to write, or changing the target system should trigger reauthorization according to policy.

Delegation exercise
- Have a named employee request a bounded task through an orchestrator.
- Allow the orchestrator to create a child agent with only the resources and operations required.
- Inspect each credential and event for the originating human, parent agent, child agent, task identifier, and expiry.
- Change the child’s requested action to a higher-impact operation and verify that the original delegation does not authorize it automatically.
- Revoke the human request and confirm that queued and downstream work stops or is re-evaluated.
NIST explicitly lists delegated authority and binding agent identity to human identity among the questions under investigation. That makes delegation tracing a core evaluation task, not an optional enhancement.
5. Human approvals and high-impact actions
Make a list of irreversible or sensitive operations in your environment: payments, privilege changes, bulk deletion, account recovery, production configuration changes, and release actions are common examples. For each, define whether the agent may act autonomously, needs step-up authentication, or requires an explicit approval.
An approval request should state the action, target, scope, authority being granted, expiry, and the identity of the approver. The approval must be bound to the exact transaction or policy decision; a generic “approve this agent” switch is too broad. Test fail-closed behavior when the approval service, risk check, policy engine, or audit sink is unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMore prompts are not automatically safer. NIST warns that repeated approval requests can condition people to approve reflexively, weakening accountability. Measure prompt frequency and reserve human intervention for meaningful changes in risk or authority. OWASP recommends step-up authentication for critical operations and fail-closed behavior when policy, approval, risk, or audit checks fail.
6. Audit, evidence, and incident response
Request sample event records and conduct an investigation without relying on the agent’s chat transcript. You should be able to answer: which agent acted, under whose authority, with which effective permissions, under which policy version, on what resource, after what approval, and with what result?
Check integrity protection, timestamps, correlation identifiers, export formats, retention, and cross-system correlation with your SIEM or case-management process. NIST’s concept paper asks how action logs can be tamper-proof and verifiable and how actions can be bound back to human authorization. Its public-comment summary identifies provenance and audit evidence as an important layer. OWASP recommends structured decision metadata for high-risk actions, including authorization outcome, approval identifier, execution result, and policy version.
Investigation drill
- Select a successful high-impact action and retrieve the authorization decision, approval, tool call, and result.
- Select a denied action and confirm that the reason, policy version, and effective identity are recorded.
- Alter or remove a test event and verify that integrity controls detect the change.
- Revoke the agent and demonstrate how responders find and terminate active sessions, tokens, queues, and child work.
7. Prompt-injection and blast-radius controls
Assume that an agent will eventually process hostile instructions in a web page, document, email, tool response, or retrieved record. Test direct and indirect prompt-injection scenarios that attempt to expose secrets, invoke an unauthorized tool, change task scope, or escalate privileges.
The control plane should enforce boundaries independently of the model. Tools should be removable or scoped per task; secrets should be withheld unless a policy decision permits their use; sensitive actions should have an independent gate; and a compromised context should not grant access to unrelated systems. Evaluate whether the platform limits data returned to the model as well as actions sent to tools.

8. Integration, standards, and maturity
Map the platform against your existing IAM directory, workload-identity system, policy engine, secrets and key stores, cloud control plane, tools, and audit or SIEM stack. Determine which components are standards-based and which depend on proprietary agents, SDKs, or gateways.
Ask the vendor to separate mature building blocks from emerging agent-specific composition. Workload identities, sender-constrained credentials, authorization decision interfaces, event-sharing profiles, and provenance mechanisms have established patterns. Agent-specific profiles that bind identity, execution context, transaction, and delegation chain remain works in progress according to NIST’s public-comment summary.

Step 1: Choose workflows, not demos
Select at least three representative workflows: a low-risk read task, a delegated multi-step task, and a high-impact write or change. Include one workflow that crosses a trust boundary and one that involves an ephemeral child agent. Define the expected identity, permissions, approvals, evidence, and revocation outcome before showing the platform.

Step 2: Build the authority map
For each workflow, draw the human or service principal, orchestrator, model runtime, child agents, tools, data stores, and policy decision point. Mark where credentials are issued, where authorization is evaluated, and where events are recorded. Any undocumented hop is an accountability gap to investigate.
Step 3: Test the negative path first
Try an unapproved resource, an expired credential, a replayed request, a changed task scope, a missing approval, a policy-engine outage, and a prompt-injection payload. Record whether the platform denies the action, explains the decision, preserves evidence, and alerts the right team. A successful happy-path demo says little about containment.
Step 4: Verify lifecycle behavior
Deploy, renew, rotate, suspend, revoke, and retire the agent. Include long-running sessions and queued jobs. Verify that shutdown removes access from the agent, its child identities, tool adapters, and cached credentials.
Step 5: Run an evidence review
Give investigators only the exported records and ask them to reconstruct one successful and one failed action. Score the time and ambiguity involved. If the answer depends on chat history, undocumented vendor internals, or a human memory of who clicked approve, the evidence model is incomplete.
Comparison scorecard
| Evaluation axis | What strong coverage looks like | Failure signal |
|---|---|---|
| Identity granularity and inventory | Distinct persistent and ephemeral identities, ownership, purpose, environment, capability, lifecycle, and runtime provenance | One shared account for many agents or no orphan and unknown-agent discovery |
| Credential lifecycle and replay resistance | Short-lived, narrowly scoped, cryptographically verified credentials with rotation, expiry, revocation, and sender constraints | Static bearer tokens, unclear workload binding, or revocation that misses active sessions |
| Authorization and enforcement location | Policy decision point isolated from the agent, enforcement at tools and resources, default-deny or explicit allow-lists, contextual re-checks | Model instructions are treated as the control or the agent can modify its own permissions |
| Task scoping, delegation, and human binding | Constrained child scope, preserved authority chain, human or service-principal attribution, reauthorization across trust or risk changes | Child agents inherit broad parent rights or logs omit the originating authority |
| Approval controls and usability | Step-up checks for critical actions, transaction-bound approvals, expiry, clear prompts, and fail-closed behavior | Generic standing approval or a flood of prompts that encourages reflexive acceptance |
| Audit integrity and response | Verifiable, exportable records containing identity, permissions, policy version, approval, action, result, and correlation data | Chat-only history, mutable logs, or no way to terminate queued and downstream work |
| Prompt-injection blast radius | Independent permission boundaries, task-scoped tools, secret minimization, and gates for sensitive actions | Retrieved text can invoke tools, expose secrets, or broaden authority |
| Interoperability and maturity | Integration with existing IAM, workload identity, policy, secrets, cloud, and SIEM systems; clear distinction between mature standards and emerging profiles | Closed control plane, undocumented proprietary claims, or “agent IAM” branding without testable interfaces |
Common buying mistakes and how to correct them
Mistaking authentication for authorization
A verified workload can still be forbidden to delete a record or read a sensitive dataset. Require separate evidence for identity proof and each resource-level decision.
Best Value
Granting the orchestrator everything
Central orchestration is convenient but creates a large blast radius. Keep the orchestrator’s authority narrow and issue child credentials for the exact task and duration.
Logging the request but not the decision
An agent transcript shows intent, not effective authority. Capture the policy input, decision, policy version, approval identifier, tool call, and result in structured records.
Using permanent credentials for convenience
Long-lived secrets survive deployment changes and are attractive targets for replay. Replace them with short-lived, scoped credentials and test emergency revocation under realistic session conditions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Putting the model in charge of its own guardrails
Prompt instructions can be bypassed or manipulated. Enforce permissions in the gateway, tool, data, and cloud control planes, with the policy decision point outside the agent runtime.
Adding approval prompts everywhere
Prompts should correspond to a meaningful increase in impact or authority. Define risk tiers, show the exact transaction and target, expire approvals, and monitor for approval fatigue.
Assuming a standard label proves maturity
Ask which interface, profile, or control is implemented and how it behaves during denial, delegation, revocation, and failure. NIST’s current work makes clear that agent-specific composition is still evolving.
Questions to put in a proof of concept
- Can every deployed agent and ephemeral task instance be uniquely identified and assigned an owner?
- How are model, runtime, environment, task, and delegation context represented and versioned?
- Which credentials are short-lived, sender-constrained, and cryptographically verifiable?
- How quickly does emergency revocation affect active sessions, queued work, and child agents?
- Where is the policy decision point, and can the agent or its runtime alter that policy?
- Can policies constrain individual tools, APIs, data objects, retrieval sources, and operations?
- How is the originating human or service principal carried through each delegation hop?
- What causes reauthorization when scope, risk, target, or trust boundary changes?
- Which actions require step-up authentication or explicit approval, and how are approvals bound to transactions?
- Can investigators reconstruct a decision from exported, integrity-protected records?
- What independent controls limit a prompt-injection attempt to the minimum possible blast radius?
- Which integrations use open or established interfaces, and which require proprietary components?
Decision rule
Shortlist only platforms that pass all of the following: distinct and owned identities; a complete credential lifecycle; authorization enforced at real resource boundaries; constrained, attributable delegation; proportionate approval controls; verifiable audit evidence; independent prompt-injection blast-radius limits; and workable integration with the IAM and security systems you already operate.
