Finally, examine customer, infrastructure, competitive, and portfolio risks. “AI stock” describes a theme, not one business model: chip designers, cloud providers, infrastructure suppliers, and companies adding AI to existing products can have very different economics.
Start by locating the company in the AI economy
Before looking at a growth rate or valuation multiple, pin down what the company sells, who pays for it, and where AI-related sales appear in its reported segments. A chip designer may sell into data-center buildouts; a cloud provider may charge for computing capacity; an infrastructure supplier may provide equipment or services; and an established software or consumer company may incorporate AI into products it already sells.

These positions are connected, but not interchangeable. Several companies can benefit from the same wave of AI investment while depending on the same customers, cloud partners, suppliers, or capital-spending cycle. Kiplinger’s October 1, 2026 commentary on the AI supply chain makes this a useful way to map exposure: follow spending and counterparties across layers rather than treating each ticker as an independent bet.

If the company has not separately quantified it in the cited material, say so; do not infer AI-specific sales from broad segment growth or management’s use of AI terminology. A growing cloud, software, or data-center segment can contain both AI and non-AI business.

How do you tell whether AI revenue growth is real?
Reported revenue growth is a starting point, not proof that AI is producing durable, profitable returns. Check several periods and segments, and distinguish organic growth from growth attributed to acquisitions where the company provides that breakdown. Then test what it costs to produce and deliver the additional sales.
Read growth alongside margins and cash
- Revenue: Compare year-over-year and, where useful, sequential results. Identify which products, customers, and segments drove the change.
- Gross and operating margins: Check whether the business is retaining more revenue after direct delivery costs and operating expenses. Consider whether product mix, pricing, or one-off items explain a change.
- Operating cash flow and free cash flow: Compare cash generation with reported earnings. Free cash flow is commonly calculated as operating cash flow minus capital expenditures; use the company’s stated definition if it differs.
- Reinvestment: Track capital expenditure, research and development, working capital, and other costs required to sustain growth. Faster sales growth is less compelling if each additional dollar of revenue requires disproportionately more investment.
Ask whether incremental AI revenue appears to outpace the added costs and capital needed to serve it. There is no universal margin threshold: a capital-intensive business may have a different profile from software, and comparisons are most useful between companies with similar business models and accounting.
Use company disclosures to test the story
Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K says offerings including AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and enterprise AI solutions may monetize differently from its historical consumer and enterprise products, potentially affecting revenue growth rates and margin trends. The filing also says Alphabet prioritizes user experience before monetization when developing new offerings. This is a company-specific disclosure, not proof that every AI product will monetize slowly or in the same way.

The same filing describes increased investment in technical infrastructure for AI and expects operating costs such as depreciation, energy, equipment, and network capacity to rise because AI requires more compute power than Alphabet’s historical offerings. For an investor, the practical test is whether monetization and customer adoption can support those ongoing costs as well as the upfront investment.
NVIDIA’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, says growth in fiscal 2027’s second quarter and first half was driven by data-center products for accelerated computing and AI solutions. It also discusses supply constraints and the possibility that demand estimates will be inaccurate. That distinction matters: customer interest is not the same as the company’s ability to deliver, a customer’s ability to deploy, or revenue recognized in a particular period.
Evaluate valuation against what the price requires
A stock’s valuation is the price paid for uncertain future business results. A high multiple is not, by itself, proof that a company is overvalued; a low multiple is not proof that it is cheap. The useful question is what growth, margins, and competitive durability the current price appears to require—and how the valuation could change if those expectations are missed.
| Measure | What it compares | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings (P/E) | Share price, or market capitalization, relative to earnings per share, or net income. | Specify whether earnings are trailing or forecast, and whether they are reported or adjusted. P/E is not meaningful when earnings are negative. |
| Price-to-sales (P/S) | Share price, or market capitalization, relative to revenue. | Sales do not show how much profit or cash the company keeps. Compare margins and growth as well as the chosen revenue period. |
| Enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) | Enterprise value—typically equity value plus debt, less cash—relative to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. | Check the definition of EBITDA, the period used, and capital intensity. EBITDA excludes depreciation even though infrastructure assets can require substantial investment. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow relative to market capitalization or enterprise value; the chosen denominator should be stated. | Check the company’s free-cash-flow definition, capital expenditure, and whether the period is trailing or forecast. A yield does not establish that cash flow will persist. |
For any comparison, record the share-price date, earnings or cash-flow period, accounting basis, and whether the figure is actual or forecast. Do not compare multiples built on different definitions as if they were equivalent. Growth, margins, dilution, capital requirements, and balance-sheet risks all affect what a multiple means.
The BIS 2026 Annual Economic Report describes elevated valuations for firms at the core of AI development and implied long-term earnings growth for large corporations above historical benchmarks. It also notes that sustaining high growth can become harder as companies mature and claim a larger market share. This supports scenario analysis, not a blanket verdict that every AI stock is overvalued.
Use scenarios rather than a single growth story
- Set a base case: Estimate a defensible path for revenue growth, margins, and reinvestment based on the company’s disclosures and competitive position.
- Stress the assumptions: Ask what happens if customer deployments take longer, growth slows, or infrastructure costs rise faster than monetization.
- Consider the upside case too: Identify what evidence would be needed for stronger adoption, pricing power, or lower delivery costs to justify higher results.
- Compare the outcomes with the price: Decide whether the current valuation leaves room for weaker results or requires an unusually strong outcome. A scenario is an analytical tool, not a price target or guarantee.
No current share-price multiples or cross-company stock ranking are established here, so current prices and comparable valuation data must be checked from a dated, consistent market-data source before drawing a conclusion about a specific stock.

What risks should you check before investing in AI companies?
Read the company’s filings for risks that could interrupt growth or change its economics. The risk list should match the company’s place in the AI supply chain: a cloud provider’s power and data-center needs differ from a software firm’s monetization and customer-retention challenges.
- Customer concentration and spending: A small number of buyers can have an outsized effect on sales. Check both named direct customers and dependence on indirect customers or end markets.
- Capacity and delivery: Compute availability, supply commitments, data-center space, land, power, and network capacity can constrain deployment or create costly delays.
- Capital access and leverage: Customers and suppliers need financing to build and use infrastructure. Higher borrowing costs or reduced access to capital can slow projects.
- Energy and operating costs: Rising power, equipment, depreciation, and network costs can pressure margins even when demand is strong.
- Competition and execution: Alternatives, changing customer preferences, product quality, and the ability to deliver promised capabilities can weaken adoption or pricing power.
- Regulation and intellectual property: Evaluate the company’s own disclosures about legal, regulatory, data, and intellectual-property exposure; the relevant risks vary by product and jurisdiction.
- Partnership dependence: Commercial arrangements can provide access to compute, distribution, or investment, but may also impose spending commitments, switching costs, or information-sharing terms.
Customer concentration: distinguish the company from the sector
NVIDIA’s 2026 Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26 reports that one direct customer represented 16% of total revenue in fiscal 2027’s second quarter. For the first half of that fiscal year, three direct customers represented 16%, 15%, and 13%, respectively. These are NVIDIA figures for those periods, not industry-wide statistics. NVIDIA also says it derives significant revenue from a limited number of indirect customers, some of which may individually account for at least 10% of revenue.
The same filing reported NVIDIA gross margin of 75.0% in fiscal 2027’s second quarter, compared with 72.4% in fiscal 2026’s second quarter, and attributed the increase in part to product mix. Treat that as a period-specific company result, not a forecast or a general margin benchmark for AI businesses.

Partnerships can create both access and dependence
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s January 2025 summary of its study of partnerships between large cloud providers and AI developers describes arrangements involving equity or revenue-sharing rights, consultation, control or exclusivity terms, and commitments for developers to spend a substantial portion of partner investment on that provider’s cloud services. The FTC identified possible consequences for access to computing resources and talent, switching costs, and sensitive information. Those findings apply to the arrangements studied and should not be generalized to every cloud or AI partnership.
Shared infrastructure can connect portfolio risks
The BIS 2026 Annual Economic Report warns that a reversal in AI investment could have broader financial consequences in light of rising leverage and AI firms’ footprint in credit markets. It also identifies exposure among suppliers, including comparatively weakly capitalized engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, and discusses the possibility of asset-price pullbacks if exuberant risk-taking or inflation-related rate tightening changes.
For a portfolio, count economic dependencies, not just tickers. A chip designer, a cloud provider, and an infrastructure supplier may all be exposed to the same hyperscaler capital-spending decisions. Kiplinger’s October 1, 2026 commentary also notes that market-cap-weighted funds can become more exposed to companies whose share prices have risen. Check current fund holdings and weights in the fund’s own documents before measuring concentration.

- Business position: What AI-related product or service is sold, to whom, and in which reported segment? Is AI revenue separately quantified?
- Growth quality: What drove revenue growth, how concentrated are the customers, and is growth converting into margins and cash?
- Reinvestment: What capital expenditure, infrastructure, research and development, or working capital is needed to sustain growth?
- Competitive position: What alternatives can customers choose, and what disclosed evidence supports adoption and pricing power?
- Valuation: What future growth and margins appear necessary to support the current price, using dated measures with comparable definitions?
- Risk: How sensitive is the business to weaker customer spending, slower deployment, supply constraints, regulation, or execution problems?
- Portfolio fit: Do your other holdings rely on the same buyers, suppliers, cloud partners, or infrastructure spending?
This framework is educational and does not make a stock suitable for every investor. A company’s filings are the best place to verify its reported results and stated risks; update those figures with the latest filings and market data when evaluating an investment.
