What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The most reliable way to evaluate an AI coding assistant is to test it on a representative sample of your own repository, score the resulting changes beyond simple pull-request acceptance, map exactly what data leaves your environment, and calculate cost per accepted change. Vendor demos and a single benchmark number cannot answer which tool is best for your codebase.
Start with a decision, not a leaderboard
“Which AI coding tool is most accurate?” has no universal answer. Results change with the task, programming language, repository history, model, agent harness, permissions, prompt, and software version. A tool that handles documentation well may struggle with a cross-module feature or a security-sensitive refactor.

Set a decision rule before testing. For example: adopt a tool only if it reaches a target test-pass rate on your team’s feature and bug-fix tasks, introduces no unacceptable security findings, meets your data-retention requirements, and stays within a measured cost per accepted change. This prevents an impressive demo from becoming an expensive or risky default.

Define accuracy as software quality
Accuracy is not the same as producing code that compiles or a pull request that a reviewer eventually accepts. Score the complete engineering outcome.
| Metric | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance criteria | Whether the requested behavior is implemented, including edge cases and compatibility requirements | A syntactically valid change can still solve the wrong problem |
| Automated tests | Existing tests that pass, new tests added, and tests that fail or were weakened | Tests provide repeatable evidence of behavior |
| Review outcome | Accepted as proposed, accepted after minor edits, major rework, or rejected | Captures the practical cost of human correction |
| Regression | Failures in unrelated modules, performance changes, API breaks, and migration issues | Local success can hide damage elsewhere |
| Security and reliability | Findings from static analysis, dependency checks, secret scans, threat review, and fault testing | Generated code may be correct-looking but unsafe |
| Effort | Prompt preparation, supervision, debugging, repair, review, and test time | A fast first draft is not a saving if engineers spend longer fixing it |
Report these measures by task category rather than only as one average. A tool with a high overall score can still be unsuitable if its failures cluster in the work you do most often.
Build a representative task set
Use real work, with sensitive details removed or access controlled, instead of toy prompts. Sample the mix your team actually handles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude the full task mix
- Bug fixes: Reproduce a known defect and define the expected correction.
- Feature work: Specify behavior, interfaces, error handling, and compatibility constraints.
- Tests: Ask for missing unit, integration, or property tests without allowing the tool to weaken existing assertions.
- Documentation: Update API references, examples, migration notes, or operational runbooks from the current code.
- Refactors: Change structure while preserving externally observable behavior.
- Upgrades: Move a dependency or runtime version and handle deprecations.
- Routine maintenance: Improve logging, configuration validation, build scripts, or small repetitive changes.
Keep acceptance criteria and expected outputs for every task. A clean baseline should build and pass its tests before the tool is introduced. If a task has no objective way to determine success, rewrite it or exclude it from the accuracy score.
Control contamination and variance
Keep some tasks private or newly authored when benchmark contamination is a concern. Do not let one participant reveal a solution to another. Use the same repository snapshot, instructions, test commands, and time budget for each tool. If a tool requires indexing, allow the same preparation period and record it.

For each task, log:
- Repository commit and relevant branch state
- Language, framework, build system, and test command
- Tool name, model, version, plan, and enabled features
- Prompt text, attached files, and conversation turns
- Permissions granted, including file writes, terminal commands, network access, and pull-request creation
- Elapsed time and human interventions
- Final patch, test results, review changes, and security findings
Run a controlled evaluation
- Freeze the baseline. Start from the same commit, verify that the build and relevant tests pass, and capture the baseline test output.
- Give the task and repository instructions. State acceptance criteria, forbidden changes, required tests, style rules, and security constraints. Do not coach one tool with information withheld from another.
- Limit permissions deliberately. Begin with read-only access when possible. Enable writes or command execution only when the workflow requires them, and record every permission.
- Allow a fixed interaction budget. Set a consistent time, turn, or intervention limit. Log follow-up prompts rather than silently rescuing a failing attempt.
- Run the prescribed checks. Execute the same unit, integration, build, lint, static-analysis, and security commands for every result. Record failures, timeouts, and tests that were skipped.
- Review blind where practical. Remove tool names from the initial review so reviewers judge the patch against the same rubric.
- Measure repair effort. Count edits, additional prompts, debugging time, and review time needed to reach an acceptable change.
- Repeat enough to expose variance. A single run is anecdotal. Repeat tasks or use multiple equivalent tasks, and report sample sizes and uncertainty.
Do not change the task after seeing a weak result. If a clarification is necessary, provide the same clarification protocol to every tool and record it.
Use a scoring rubric that exposes failure modes
A practical scorecard combines binary gates with measured effort. A task should not receive a high score merely because it passed a superficial check.
| Area | Suggested recording |
|---|---|
| Functional completion | Meets all acceptance criteria: yes/no, with failed criteria listed |
| Test evidence | Baseline tests passed, new tests meaningful, failures introduced, and coverage of changed behavior |
| Review quality | Accepted unchanged, minor revision, major revision, or rejected; list reasons |
| Regression risk | New failures, API or schema breaks, performance concerns, and migration hazards |
| Security | Vulnerabilities, insecure defaults, secret exposure, unsafe dependencies, and unresolved findings |
| Human cost | Minutes spent preparing, supervising, repairing, testing, and reviewing |
| Resource use | Model requests, credits or tokens where disclosed, latency, and rate-limit events |
Keep raw outcomes as well as a summary score. Publish pass rates by category, confidence intervals or other uncertainty estimates when sample sizes permit, and every critical failure. A weighted score can help rank options, but it must not override a hard security or privacy failure.
Why pull-request acceptance is insufficient
Acceptance can reflect reviewer time, deadline pressure, or a willingness to repair a patch. It does not prove that the implementation is secure, maintainable, or correct under untested conditions. Require tests and review evidence, and inspect changes that touch authentication, authorization, payments, data handling, concurrency, or infrastructure even when all automated checks pass.
What large-scale evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A 2026 observational study by Pinna, Gong, Williams, and Sarro analyzed 7,156 pull requests across five coding agents in the AIDev dataset. It reported 82.1% acceptance for documentation tasks versus 66.1% for feature tasks, a 16-percentage-point gap. That difference is evidence that task mix matters; it is not a guarantee for your repository.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
The study reported Codex acceptance ranging from 59.6% to 88.6% across nine task categories. It also reported 92.3% documentation and 72.6% feature acceptance for Claude Code, and 80.4% fix-task acceptance for Cursor. Some comparisons had sparse observations, and the authors called for code-quality measures beyond acceptance. Treat these figures as a reason to stratify your own benchmark, not as a current product ranking or a prediction of correctness, security, or productivity.
Map the privacy boundary before sharing code
Treat repository context as data sent to a service. For every exact product mode and plan, document what leaves the workstation, who processes it, how long it is retained, and who can access it.
Inventory transmitted material
- Current file and nearby lines
- Other open files or editor tabs
- Repository name, path, branch, and file metadata
- Prompts, conversation history, terminal output, and tool results
- Indexed code, embeddings, snapshots, and generated patches
- Secrets or credentials that may appear in files, environment variables, logs, or command output
Use a test repository containing canary strings to verify documented behavior where your policy allows, but do not place real credentials in an evaluation. Configure secret redaction and review terminal output before it is submitted.
Questions to answer for each plan and feature
- Is processing local, hosted by the vendor, or sent to a separate model provider?
- Which region stores prompts, outputs, transcripts, indexes, snapshots, and logs?
- Are interactions used to train models, and what opt-out or contract applies?
- What are the retention and deletion periods for each data type?
- Can administrators restrict repositories, models, extensions, network destinations, and data export?
- Are access logs, encryption details, incident notices, and deletion guarantees available?
- Do terms differ between individual, business, and enterprise plans?
GitHub Copilot examples
GitHub says Copilot can send nearby editor code, other open files, repository and file information, prompts, and workspace context to its model. Its product information states that Business and Enterprise data are not used to train GitHub models, while interactions from individual subscribers may be used for training unless the subscriber opts out. GitHub also documents different default retention by access path: for Business and Enterprise IDE chat and completions, prompts and suggestions are stated as not retained; other access and uses are described as retaining prompts and suggestions for 28 days. Confirm the current terms for the exact feature and plan you will deploy.
Cursor Cloud Agent examples
Cursor’s Cloud Agent documentation describes an agent running in a cloud virtual machine with a cloned repository, dependencies, configured secrets, and network access. It says conversation state and artifacts are persisted, Cloud Agents run in Privacy Mode, and most models operate under zero-data-retention agreements, while model-specific details still apply. The documentation describes transcript retention as indefinite by default with on-demand deletion and virtual-machine snapshots on a rolling 90-day inactivity window. These statements concern Cloud Agents, not every product mode. Treat cloud execution, configured secrets, and network access as separate approval decisions.

Constrain agent permissions and secure the workflow
Repository-level agents can do more than suggest a line in an editor. A useful permission matrix makes the risk visible.
| Capability | Safer default | When to permit it |
|---|---|---|
| Read repository | Allow only required repositories and branches | Almost every evaluation |
| Write files | Use an isolated branch or workspace; require a diff review | When measuring end-to-end implementation |
| Run commands | Sandbox, block destructive commands, and capture output | When tests or builds are essential to the task |
| Network access | Disabled or allowlisted | Only when dependencies or documented APIs require it |
| Use secrets | Prefer short-lived, least-privilege credentials or none | Only for a controlled integration test |
| Create or merge pull requests | Require human approval and protected branches | After checks and review policies pass |
Require generated changes to pass normal code review, tests, dependency checks, and security analysis. GitHub’s responsible-use guidance warns: “Although the cloud agent can generate syntactically correct code, it may not always be secure.” A passing build is therefore a checkpoint, not authorization to deploy.
Calculate the real cost
Subscription price is only one component. Compare the cost of producing an accepted, reviewed change under the same workload.
Include every cost component
- License or seat fee, billed monthly or annually
- Included requests, credits, model calls, or agent minutes
- Premium-model consumption and overage rates
- Rate limits, queueing, and the cost of blocked work
- Engineering time for prompt preparation, supervision, repair, testing, and review
- Security, compliance, logging, storage, and integration work
- Training and change-management time
Use this measure for each task category:
Cost per accepted change = (allocated subscription and infrastructure cost + metered usage + human labor cost) ÷ accepted changes.
Recommended Free Tools
Allocate shared subscription cost consistently, such as by recorded usage or seats, and state the method. Compare tools on the same task set and period. Do not compare a capped subscription with uncapped API consumption without normalizing included usage and workload.
Best Value
Understand credit metering
GitHub documents AI credits priced at $0.01 USD per credit. Credits are used for chat, agents, CLI, and Spaces; under the described paid plans, inline completions and next-edit suggestions do not use credits. Consumption depends on the selected model and task complexity, and GitHub documents budgets and usage tracking. Plan inclusions and prices change, so verify the current terms before signing a contract.
Track credits or tokens per task, not just per month. A low-cost completion feature can coexist with expensive agent sessions. Set budgets and alerts where available, and stop an evaluation when it reaches a pre-approved limit rather than allowing an uncontrolled overage.
Compare viable tools on the same axes
| Axis | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Task accuracy | Completion, tests, review revisions, regressions, security findings, and repair effort by category |
| Context fit | Repository indexing, context limits, language and framework behavior, and adherence to project conventions |
| Privacy | Data sent, training use, retention, deletion, hosting, model provider, and contractual protections |
| Control | Model allowlists, permission scope, command and network controls, audit logs, and approval gates |
| Cost | Subscription, included usage, credits or metering, model choice, overages, and human review time |
| Workflow fit | IDE, CLI, web, and pull-request integration; deployment constraints; and learning curve |
Mark each claim as documented, observed in your evaluation, or unknown. Vendor documentation explains intended behavior but does not independently validate performance. Unknown privacy or retention terms should remain a procurement issue rather than being treated as “probably fine.”

Adopt
Adopt when the tool meets hard privacy and security requirements, improves measured outcomes on representative tasks, and has a sustainable cost per accepted change. Define approved plans, models, repositories, permissions, and review gates in writing.
Pilot with limits
Use a time-boxed pilot when accuracy is promising but sample sizes are small or controls are incomplete. Restrict it to non-sensitive repositories, disable network and secret access, set spending alerts, and schedule a re-evaluation after model or plan changes.
Reject or pause
Pause when critical vulnerabilities, unexplained data flows, unacceptable retention, uncontrolled spending, or repeated regressions appear. A high acceptance rate cannot compensate for a failed non-negotiable requirement.
