How to Evaluate a Web Data Extraction API for Your Application

Choose a web data extraction API by testing it on your application’s real domains, URL types, fields, traffic pattern, and governance requirements—not by selecting the longest feature list. Build a fixed reference set, run a workload-specific pilot, measure field-level correctness and operating behavior, model the complete bill, and review security and contractual terms before you commit.

A successful HTTP response or valid JSON only proves that a request completed syntactically. It does not prove that prices, names, dates, availability, or other values are present, current, complete, or taken from the intended page. Your acceptance criteria must therefore cover both extraction quality and service behavior.

Start with the workload your application actually has

Vendor documentation is useful for discovering available modes and billing units. It is not evidence that an API will reliably access your target sites or extract your required fields. Define the workload before comparing providers so every candidate receives the same inputs and is judged against the same standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write a workload specification

Record these items in a short, versioned document:

  • Target domains and representative URLs: include the exact sites, paths, URL parameters, locales, and page variants your application will process.
  • Output schema: list every required field, its type, normalization rules, and whether it may be empty.
  • Quality thresholds: set acceptable error rates for missing, incorrect, duplicated, malformed, stale-looking, or unnormalized values.
  • Volume and schedule: estimate pages per run, runs per day or month, seasonal peaks, and expected growth.
  • Concurrency and latency: define normal and peak parallelism, timeout limits, and whether work is interactive, queued, or asynchronous.
  • Geography: specify regions, languages, currencies, and localized variants that affect the response.
  • Retention: state how long raw pages, extracted data, logs, and screenshots may be stored and how deletion must work.

Do not assume every URL needs a browser or an AI extraction step. A straightforward HTML page may be cheaper and faster over HTTP, while a JavaScript application or an interaction-heavy flow may require rendering and actions. Classifying URLs first prevents you from paying browser or structured-extraction charges where they add no value.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Classify the URL set

Split representative URLs into four practical groups:

  1. Static HTML: the required content is in the initial HTTP response.
  2. JavaScript-rendered: the browser must execute scripts before the fields appear.
  3. Interactive: extraction requires actions such as clicking, typing, waiting, scrolling, selecting a tab, or submitting a form.
  4. Known failures or challenges: pages that return errors, incomplete content, access challenges, or inconsistent layouts.

Give each group enough examples to expose layout variation. A pilot made from one easy URL can hide failures on pagination, regional versions, logged-out states, or an updated template.

Create a fixed ground-truth set

Manually check the expected values against the source pages and preserve those cases for every provider. Include normal pages and deliberately difficult cases. For each field, record the source value, the normalized value your application expects, and whether an empty value is legitimate. Keep the set unchanged during the comparison; changing examples between vendors makes the results impossible to interpret.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test rendering and extraction modes on those URLs

For every provider, identify how a request selects plain HTTP, browser rendering, structured extraction, and interaction actions. Record the actual response, not just the option shown in the documentation.

Verify the rendering path

Check whether the content required by your schema is available in the HTTP response body or only after browser execution. Confirm how the API handles redirects, cookies, delayed network calls, lazy-loaded content, pagination, and regional variants. If interactions are required, reproduce the complete sequence and verify that the final page—not merely the initial shell—is sent to extraction.

Firecrawl’s product documentation describes Chromium-based rendering, schema-based JSON output, HTML and Markdown formats, and actions including click, type, wait, and scroll. Its documentation states: “Every scrape runs in a real Chromium instance, so React, Vue, Next.js, and other SPA frameworks render the same way they would in a browser tab.” That is a vendor product statement, not an independent accuracy or success-rate test; your URLs still determine whether the mode works.

Score fields, not just responses

For each ground-truth case, compare every expected field:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Presence: did the field appear when it should?
  • Correctness: does it match the checked source value?
  • Completeness: are all items, pages, variants, and records included?
  • Normalization: are dates, numbers, currencies, units, and whitespace in the required form?
  • Traceability: can an engineer identify the source URL, timestamp, status, or extraction diagnostic behind the value?

Count missing, incorrect, duplicated, malformed, and stale-looking values separately. A provider that returns valid JSON with the wrong price should fail the same acceptance test as a provider that times out.

Inspect useful metadata

Determine whether responses expose the status code, final URL, retrieval timestamp, content type, request identifier, rendered-versus-HTTP mode, and extraction diagnostics. These details make it possible to distinguish a source-site change from a parser defect and to replay or suppress bad records safely.

Measure reliability under representative load

Run the pilot repeatedly over a representative interval and at the concurrency your application expects. A single successful run says little about queueing, throttling, transient failures, or target-site variation.

Capture an operational metric set

  • Completion rate, separated by URL category and domain.
  • Latency distribution, including median and high-percentile values rather than one average.
  • Timeouts, HTTP 4xx and 5xx responses, blocked pages, and incomplete renders.
  • Retry count and the final outcome after retries.
  • Field-level correctness and completeness for each run.
  • 429 responses, rate-limit headers, queue time, and behavior when concurrency is reached.

Keep raw request and response identifiers so a failed extraction can be investigated. Compare the same concurrency and timeout policy for each candidate; otherwise the benchmark measures your client settings instead of the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design retries and queues deliberately

Document which failures are safe to retry and make requests idempotent where possible. Use bounded exponential backoff for transient failures, honor provider retry guidance and rate-limit headers, and send permanently failed URLs to a review queue rather than silently dropping them. Persist job state so a worker restart does not duplicate charges or records.

Apify’s API documentation describes global and per-resource limits and 429 responses when a limit is exceeded. Its published global limit is 250,000 requests per minute (API documentation accessed October 13, 2026); this is a documented ceiling, not a recommended workload target or an uptime promise. Firecrawl’s scrape documentation says jobs wait in a queue when concurrent-browser capacity is exceeded. Your pilot must measure the resulting wait time and determine whether your user-facing deadlines remain acceptable.

Separate documentation from a service-level commitment

Feature pages do not establish reliability. Ask for the service-level terms that apply to your plan, review support and escalation commitments, and examine status history where available. The comparison in this article does not establish a neutral, provider-to-provider uptime or target-site success benchmark.

Model total cost using your request mix

Compare a complete workload cost, not a headline rate. Build low, expected, and peak scenarios and include every option your request actually uses.

Include all billable components

  • Requests by URL category and target-site tier.
  • Browser-rendered requests and screenshots.
  • Structured extraction, custom attributes, or other model-assisted options.
  • Output size, network, storage, or retention charges where applicable.
  • Retries, failed or blocked responses, and duplicate work caused by restarts.
  • Minimum commitments, monthly caps, overage rates, and account-suspension behavior.

Recalculate the model when the browser-rendered share, field count, retry rate, or concurrency changes. A low unit price can be outweighed by rendering, extraction, or repeated-failure costs.

Published billing examples

Provider and item Published figure Qualification
Zyte automatic extraction $0.27–$1.07 per 1,000 per data type Zyte pricing documentation accessed October 13, 2026; page undated. The amount varies by data type and is subject to change.
Zyte screenshots $1.34 per 1,000 Zyte pricing documentation accessed October 13, 2026; page undated. Check the live page for current terms.
Firecrawl JSON-format LLM extraction 4 credits per page Firecrawl billing documentation accessed October 13, 2026; page undated. Credit units are not directly comparable with another provider’s currency price.
Apify global API limit 250,000 requests per minute Apify API documentation accessed October 13, 2026; page undated. This is a documented limit, not a target throughput or availability guarantee.

Zyte documents five HTTP and five browser request tiers, with the target site and request type determining a base tier. Its documentation also describes custom-attribute charges based on input and output tokens and states that spending limits can suspend an account when the maximum monthly charge is reached. Firecrawl describes a base rate of one credit per page for most formats, with option costs added; verify the plan and overage rules that apply to your account.

Check integration fit in a small prototype

Implement the simplest representative request in the same language and deployment environment as the application. A successful curl command is not enough if production needs asynchronous jobs, strict schemas, or regional routing.

Verify the request and response contract

  • Authentication method, secret storage, rotation, and least-privilege access.
  • SDK availability, maintenance cadence, supported runtime versions, and generated clients.
  • Response formats such as HTML, Markdown, JSON, screenshots, links, and metadata.
  • Batch or asynchronous workflows, pagination, webhooks, and cancellation.
  • Error bodies, request IDs, rate-limit headers, and usage reporting.
  • Schema validation, custom parsing, retries, cleanup, and observability your team must maintain.

Firecrawl documents Markdown, HTML, JSON, screenshots, links, metadata, and interaction actions. Zyte documents an authenticated single-URL extraction endpoint and extraction input from either browser-rendered HTML or an HTTP response body. Apify documents endpoint behavior and rate limits. Treat these as shortlist information; the prototype should determine how much application code is required for your schema and failure handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test deployment and ownership

Trace the data flow from your worker to the provider and back. Check outbound-network requirements, regional processing, secret exposure in logs, and whether your team can reproduce a failed request. Compare a hosted service with any self-managed alternative in terms of operational ownership, patching, browser maintenance, scaling, and incident response.

Review security, privacy, and source access before procurement

Technical performance does not settle whether your project may collect or retain the data. Ask for current evidence and read the contract that will govern your account.

Request procurement evidence

  • Security report, audit scope, and control coverage.
  • Data-processing terms, subprocessors, processing locations, and transfer mechanisms.
  • Retention defaults, deletion APIs, backup deletion, and customer-controlled limits.
  • Encryption, access controls, tenant isolation, and incident-notification terms.
  • Availability, support response, service credits, liability, and termination provisions.
  • Customer responsibilities and any restrictions on sensitive or personal data.

Apify’s security documentation states that its platform is SOC 2 Type II compliant and directs customers to its Trust Center for reports and controls. Its data-processing addendum says the customer must have a lawful basis or necessary consent for personal-data processing and provides a 72-hour notice period for known security incidents involving personal data processed on the customer’s behalf; that DPA was last updated July 8, 2026. Its general terms state that platform availability is not guaranteed unless otherwise agreed. Verify the current documents and negotiated terms rather than relying on a summary.

Zyte’s compliance materials describe vendor-provided controls including login restrictions for many sites, rate limiting, and IP-sourcing controls. These are statements about product controls, not legal advice and not a guarantee that your particular use is permitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the target site and jurisdiction

Before collecting data, review the target site’s terms and access restrictions, the sensitivity and ownership of the data, applicable privacy and intellectual-property obligations, and the project’s jurisdiction and purpose. Obtain permission or a licensed feed when required. A provider’s ability to fetch a page does not establish that your intended collection, storage, or redistribution is lawful; obtain project-specific advice from qualified counsel.

Use one scoring rubric for every provider

Score each candidate against the same evidence and set minimum gates before awarding points. If a provider fails a mandatory field-quality or access requirement, a lower price or more convenient SDK should not rescue it.

Axis Evidence to collect
Rendering and interaction HTTP versus browser behavior, JavaScript content, required actions, and results on the actual URL set.
Output quality Field-level precision and completeness, schema conformance, metadata, and diagnostics against the checked reference set.
Coverage and operating behavior Completion rate, latency, retries, limits, queues, and target-site-specific failures under representative load.
Total cost Full request mix, render and extraction options, retry behavior, volume tiers, commitments, and overages.
Integration Authentication, SDKs, response formats, batch processing, error handling, monitoring, and custom code.
Security and governance Current audit evidence, DPA, subprocessors, retention, deletion, incident notification, and contractual commitments.
Deployment and control Hosted versus self-managed operation, data flow, operational ownership, and maintenance effort.

Set pass/fail gates first

Examples of useful gates are: every mandatory field reaches the required accuracy on the fixed reference set; critical domains meet the completion threshold at peak concurrency; 429 and timeout handling does not lose jobs; retention and deletion meet policy; and the contract supplies the support and availability commitments your application needs. Only after those gates pass should you compare weighted cost or developer convenience.

Run the pilot as a repeatable decision process

  1. Freeze the specification. Version the URL categories, schema, quality thresholds, volume, concurrency, latency, geography, and retention requirements.
  2. Prepare the reference set. Manually verify expected values and preserve the source pages, timestamps, and normalization rules.
  3. Implement a common harness. Use the same timeout, retry, concurrency, logging, and field-comparison logic for every API.
  4. Test the cheapest suitable mode first. Use plain HTTP where the required content is present; add browser rendering or interactions only when the workload needs them.
  5. Repeat at realistic load. Capture completion, latency, errors, queueing, throttling, retries, and field correctness for each URL category.
  6. Calculate three cost scenarios. Include normal, expected, and peak volumes plus rendering, extraction, retries, storage, minimums, and overages.
  7. Complete the integration and security review. Confirm secret handling, response parsing, observability, retention, DPA terms, incident notices, and source-access obligations.
  8. Record exceptions and recovery. Define what happens when a page changes, a provider returns a 429, a browser job queues, or a field becomes empty.
  9. Make a documented decision. Keep the measurements, assumptions, contract version, and rejected alternatives so the choice can be revisited when the workload changes.

Know when not to select an extraction API

If no candidate meets the minimum field quality or access requirements, do not award points for low price. Revisit the source and the product requirement instead. Obtain permission or a licensed feed, reduce the required data, narrow the URL set, or build a controlled alternative whose maintenance and legal responsibilities you can support.

Likewise, do not treat a vendor’s feature description as a neutral benchmark. The documented figures above are provider-published mechanics and limits, not a ranking of accuracy, reliability, or value.
