To judge it, record the target’s horizon and publication date, rebuild the assumptions for revenue, margins, capital spending, utilization and cash flow, then test the valuation against company results, current guidance and credible downside cases.
This framework is designed for situations where no single company or current target has been specified. It shows how to compare analyst work without treating a consensus figure as ground truth.

Start by defining what the target actually says
Before judging whether a target is high or low, identify the security, the date and the forecast period. A target can refer to a different share class, currency or time horizon than the price you are comparing it with. A report issued before an earnings release may also be describing a business that has already changed.

| Field | What to record | Why it changes the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Security | Company, ticker, exchange, share class and split-adjustment status | Different classes can have different prices or voting rights; an unadjusted historical target can look wrong after a split. |
| Currency | Target and current price currency, plus any exchange-rate assumption | A target in U.S. dollars is not directly comparable with a price in another currency. |
| Publication date | Date the analyst issued or last updated the report | Use the latest earnings release, guidance change and industry event to test whether the report is stale. |
| Target date and horizon | For example, six months, 12 months or a specific fiscal year | The same company can justify very different values over a cyclical trough, a recovery year or a long-term expansion. |
| Target format | Point estimate or range; nominal or split-adjusted | A range communicates uncertainty that a single number hides. |
Write these fields at the top of your worksheet. Do not calculate an upside percentage until the comparison price and the target use the same currency, share basis and date convention.

Separate facts, guidance, objectives and forecasts
Analyst models often mix several kinds of information. Keep them in separate columns so an aspiration is not mistaken for a reported result.
| Evidence type | Meaning | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Company actuals | Revenue, margins, expenses, cash flow and share count already reported for a completed period | Use as the starting point and check the calculation against the filing. |
| Management guidance | Near-term expectations for the next quarter or year | Compare the analyst’s next-period estimates with the stated range, including currency and margin definitions. |
| Management long-range objectives | Multi-year goals that depend on market conditions and execution | Keep separate from actuals; assess what must happen for the objective to be met. |
| Analyst estimates | An external forecast built from assumptions about the company and industry | Inspect the model rather than treating the estimate as an independent fact. |
| Your scenarios | Bear, base and bull cases you construct by changing material drivers | Use to test whether the target works outside the analyst’s central case. |
TSMC’s Q2 2026 reporting page is a useful example of labeling: it presents completed-quarter results separately from guidance for Q3 2026. Its investor material also states strategic objectives for 2024–2029—revenue compound annual growth approaching 25% in U.S.-dollar terms, gross margin of at least 56% and return on equity in the high 20s through the cycle. Those are management objectives, not realized results or independent forecasts.
ASML’s July 15, 2026 release similarly separates Q2 results, Q3 guidance and a 2026 outlook. That layout illustrates the evidence trail you want for any semiconductor company: actuals first, the next-period guide second and longer-range expectations in a clearly marked section.

A price target is only as credible as the operating model underneath it. Start with revenue, but do not stop there.
Break revenue into products and end markets
List the forecast by product family, geography or end market whenever the company discloses enough detail. A model that says “revenue grows 20%” conceals whether the increase comes from data-center accelerators, smartphones, automobiles, industrial chips, memory or equipment. Those markets have different order patterns, pricing power and inventory cycles.
Check the bridge from the latest actual quarter to each forecast period. Identify volume, average selling price, mix, foreign-exchange and acquisition assumptions. If one customer or program supplies most of the growth, model what happens if its launch slips or its order rate normalizes.

Model margins and operating expenses
Recalculate gross margin from the analyst’s revenue and cost assumptions, then connect it to operating income after research, development, sales and administrative costs. Ask whether the model assumes a product mix change, a price increase, lower component costs or factory utilization to produce the margin improvement.
Revenue growth without margin support may not create much per-share value. Conversely, a modest revenue recovery can produce a large earnings rebound when fixed manufacturing costs are spread over more units. The key is to identify which costs are fixed, variable or committed before the forecast period.
Distinguish semiconductor business models
| Business type | Typical model features to examine | Important valuation questions |
|---|---|---|
| Fabless designer | External manufacturing, design cycles, royalty or product mix and customer concentration | Are forecast launches on schedule, and can gross margin withstand competition or a larger customer’s bargaining power? |
| Memory producer | Commodity pricing, inventory cycles, bit output, utilization and large capital programs | Does the target require peak pricing to persist, or does it work at mid-cycle prices? |
| Foundry | Wafer capacity, process-node transitions, customer qualifications, utilization and yield | Can new capacity reach acceptable yield and utilization before depreciation weighs on margins? |
| Equipment supplier | Customers’ capital-expenditure budgets, order timing, backlog, service revenue and geographic exposure | Is demand supported by several customers and technologies, or by one investment cycle? |
Do not transfer the margin or multiple of one business type to another. A foundry’s depreciation and utilization profile is not interchangeable with a fabless designer’s cost structure.
Test utilization, capital spending and cash generation
Semiconductor operating leverage cuts both ways. STMicroelectronics’ 2024 annual report explains that weaker demand and price pressure can leave capacity unused, create unused-capacity charges, raise average unit costs and reduce gross margin. The same report says capital-expenditure decisions consider market trends, customer requirements and capacity utilization.
Ask whether capacity arrives before demand
For a capital-intensive company, map each major investment to the revenue it is supposed to support. Include construction, equipment installation, qualification, yield learning and the period needed to fill the facility. A model that books revenue as soon as a plant is announced is likely too aggressive.
Use at least two utilization cases. In the downside case, hold a portion of capacity idle for longer and include the resulting cost absorption. In the upside case, require evidence that orders, customer qualifications and supply-chain readiness can support the higher load.

Bridge earnings to free cash flow
Reconcile net income to operating cash flow, then subtract capital expenditure. Review working-capital assumptions for inventories, receivables and payables; a reported earnings recovery can consume cash if inventory is built ahead of uncertain demand.
Check depreciation against the installed asset base and planned spending. A target that depends on rapidly rising earnings but ignores the cash required for new fabs, tools or research is not a complete valuation.
Check the share count
Per-share value depends on fully diluted shares, not only the latest basic count. Include employee awards, convertible securities, buybacks and new issuance. Enterprise value can remain unchanged while dilution lowers the value assigned to each share.
Identify the valuation bridge
Once the operating forecast is rebuilt, determine how it becomes a target price. Different methods can produce different answers even with similar revenue forecasts.
Earnings or cash-flow multiples
For a price-to-earnings target, record the forecast earnings year and the multiple applied. A target based on next year’s earnings is not equivalent to one based on a normalized, mid-cycle year. For enterprise-value multiples, record debt, cash and minority interests before converting enterprise value to equity value.
Ask why the selected multiple is appropriate. A higher multiple requires durable growth, stronger returns on capital, lower risk or some combination. A cyclical company may deserve a multiple on normalized earnings rather than on an unusually high or low year.

Discounted cash flow
For a DCF, document the explicit forecast period, revenue and margin path, tax rate, depreciation, capital expenditure, working capital, discount rate and terminal assumptions. Small changes to the discount rate or terminal growth can move the result substantially, so show a sensitivity table instead of one unexplained output.

The McKinsey 2026 semiconductor analysis provides a useful methodological example: its DCF framework uses analyst-consensus estimates dated February 28, 2026. That as-of date matters. Consensus inputs are not timeless facts; a later earnings release can change the starting point before the valuation formula changes.
Sum-of-the-parts valuation
For a company with distinct segments, value each segment using operating assumptions and a method suited to that segment. Check that corporate costs, debt, pensions, investments and inter-segment revenue are included once—not omitted or counted twice. Reconcile the segment values to equity value and divide by the appropriate diluted share count.
Translate every assumption into price
Build a bridge that answers: what revenue, margin, cash flow and multiple must occur for the target to be reached? If a target requires both unusually high growth and a higher multiple, label the two assumptions separately. This makes disagreement between analysts visible instead of hiding it in the final number.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Forecast vintage | Which report incorporates the latest results, guidance, product announcement or policy change? |
| Horizon | Are the analysts valuing the same fiscal year or cycle position? |
| Revenue | Which products, customers and end markets explain the difference? |
| Margins | Does one model assume faster mix improvement, pricing power or utilization? |
| Capital intensity | Are capacity additions, depreciation and qualification costs modeled consistently? |
| Cash flow | Do working capital and capital expenditure support the stated free-cash-flow path? |
| Valuation | What earnings year, multiple, discount rate and terminal value are used? |
| Downside probability | Is risk reflected in the operating case, the multiple, the discount rate or nowhere? |
Highlight the two or three assumptions that explain most of the target gap. An analyst may be more bullish on demand but more conservative on margins; another may forecast the same earnings but apply a lower multiple. Those are different theses and should not be reduced to a consensus average.
Best Value
Build bear, base and bull cases
- Choose material drivers. Usually these include end-market growth, average selling prices, gross margin, utilization, capital expenditure and the valuation multiple or discount rate.
- Change a small number of drivers at a time. A transparent case might lower demand and utilization together, while holding unrelated assumptions constant.
- Recalculate the full income statement and cash flow. Do not change revenue without reflecting its effect on variable costs, fixed-cost absorption, taxes and working capital.
- Revalue each case consistently. Use the same method and share-count convention so the difference comes from operating assumptions rather than spreadsheet mechanics.
- Record the break-even condition. State the revenue, margin or multiple at which the target becomes achievable or fails.
ASML’s November 14, 2024 investor-day material illustrates scenario framing. It described a 2030 opportunity with annual revenue of approximately €44 billion to €60 billion and gross margin of approximately 56% to 60% under different market and technology scenarios. Those figures are an older, company-specific illustration—not current guidance for ASML or a forecast for the semiconductor industry. The useful lesson is to show a range tied to explicit conditions.
Stress-test semiconductor-specific risks
Demand and cycle risk
Test whether the forecast assumes an unusually strong order environment continues for every period. Run a case in which a major end market slows for several quarters, inventory is corrected and the recovery begins later. Semiconductor cycles can turn faster than a long-term narrative suggests.
Customer concentration
List the customers or programs responsible for incremental revenue. TSMC’s July 16, 2026 call transcript included an analyst question about larger customers and concentration as AI demand outgrew other end markets. The question identifies an issue to investigate; it does not by itself quantify TSMC’s concentration risk. Look for disclosed customer percentages, program schedules, contract terms and evidence that demand is broadening.
Pricing and product mix
Model price declines, competitive responses and shifts between high- and low-margin products. STMicroelectronics’ discussion of lower demand and price pressure shows why volume growth can fail to protect gross profit when prices fall or factories run below efficient utilization.
Technology transitions and policy
Review risk disclosures for process transitions, export controls, geopolitical events, supplier constraints and customer qualification delays. Synopsys’ September 30, 2026 investor-day release lists macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty, industry growth, competition, government restrictions and customer concentration among its risks. The categories are company-specific, but they are a useful checklist for any semiconductor model.
Capital structure and dilution
Inspect debt maturities, interest expense, cash balances, buybacks and potential issuance. A higher interest burden can reduce equity value even when operating profit meets the forecast. Conversely, a buyback can increase per-share value only if it is funded sustainably and executed at a sensible price.
A repeatable worksheet for any target
Use one row per analyst report and one separate section for your scenarios.
| Worksheet section | Minimum entries |
|---|---|
| Identity | Company, security, exchange, currency, publication date, target date and price basis |
| Operating model | Revenue by product or end market, gross margin, operating expenses, tax, depreciation, working capital and capital expenditure |
| Capacity | Existing utilization, planned additions, qualification timing, yield assumptions and unused-capacity charges |
| Cash and shares | Operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt, cash, buybacks and diluted shares |
| Valuation | Method, forecast year, multiple or discount rate, terminal assumptions and bridge to equity value |
| Evidence | Latest actuals, current guidance, long-range objectives and the date of each item |
| Risks | Demand, customers, pricing, technology, policy, suppliers and execution dependencies |
| Scenarios | Bear, base and bull outputs plus the assumptions that create each result |
Color-code inputs as reported, guided, management-objective, analyst-estimate or your own assumption. That simple labeling prevents an optimistic objective from silently becoming a model fact.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
- Using a stale target: Re-date the model after the latest results and guidance. If the report predates a material event, treat its target as historical context.
- Comparing unlike horizons: Align the fiscal year, cycle position and currency before comparing upside.
- Focusing only on revenue: Add gross margin, operating leverage, capital expenditure, working capital and dilution.
- Assuming utilization stays high: Model unused-capacity charges and higher unit costs in a demand slowdown.
- Using a peak-cycle multiple: Revalue normalized earnings and show what multiple compression does to the target.
- Ignoring customer concentration: Identify the specific customers or programs behind incremental demand and test a delay or loss.
- Mixing management goals with forecasts: Put long-range objectives in a separate evidence column and require an execution path.
- Hiding uncertainty in one number: Publish a range or scenario table with the drivers that separate the cases.
A practical decision rule
Give the most weight to a target whose assumptions are current, explicitly tied to company evidence, consistent with the company’s business model and resilient under a reasonable bear case. Treat a target as fragile when it depends simultaneously on peak demand, expanding margins, heavy new capacity coming online on time and a higher valuation multiple. The number is useful only after you can explain the operating and valuation bridge that produces it.
