A published profit figure or high strike rate does not, by itself, show that a horse racing model has a real, repeatable edge. Start by checking that every selection and price was recorded before the race, that the full record includes losing bets, and that the stated return can be recalculated using realistic prices, disclosed stakes, and clear settlement rules. Then assess how the model was tested and whether its results hold up across more than one measure.
First check whether the record is complete and time-stamped
A credible results ledger should let you see what was selected, when it was selected, and the price available at that time. Look for dated, pre-race entries; a complete list of picks, including losers; and a record of corrections, voids, or other changes. A results page that shows only winners or selectively chosen periods cannot establish overall performance.
Check the scope as well: start and end dates, geography, race types, bet types, selection frequency, and whether the figures cover every eligible pick or only a named tier. Each selection should have a defined settlement rule. A provider’s description of its process is useful, but a self-maintained ledger is not an independent audit.
For example, Algohorse describes registering selections and prices before racing and retaining registered tips on its results page. That description makes aspects of its process inspectable; the page also says independent third-party verification is intended. That is not evidence that the record is already independently verified. Its live figures can change, so check the page directly rather than relying on a copied snapshot: Algohorse results.

Recalculate the return before trusting the headline
Profit and return on investment (ROI, also called yield in some betting contexts) are meaningful only when you know how they were calculated. Ask for the total number of bets, total stakes, stake size or staking rule, odds used for each selection, and any deductions such as exchange commission. The provider should also explain how it settles non-runners, voids, dead heats, each-way bets, and partial settlements.
- Check the formula: What does the provider call ROI or yield, and is the denominator total stakes?
- Check the prices: Are recorded odds tied to a timestamp and a specific source? “Best odds available” is incomplete without explaining when and where those odds were available, and whether a typical reader could realistically obtain them.
- Check the settlement: Are deductions and unusual outcomes applied consistently to every bet?
- Check the stakes: Can you reproduce the total from the stated stake convention and the individual results?
A profit total without total stakes is hard to interpret; a return percentage without odds and settlement details is hard to verify. Separate selection quality from staking. If stakes increased on winners or a staking formula was applied retrospectively, the resulting profit may look very different from the performance of the selections themselves. Compare level-stake results where possible, then assess any staking strategy as a separate risk decision.

Read strike rate alongside odds and sample size
Strike rate is the share of selections that win. It does not tell you whether a strategy made money: a low strike rate at longer odds can be profitable, while a higher strike rate at short odds can lose. Read it alongside average or typical odds, stakes, bet type, settlement, and the number of selections.
There is no universal number of bets that proves a model works. Results from a short record can be dominated by chance, and higher-odds strategies tend to have more variable outcomes and longer losing runs. Look for confidence ranges if provided, cumulative results, maximum drawdown, longest losing run, and how much of the total profit depends on one or a few unusually large wins. None of these measures alone establishes that future results will match the past.

Find out whether the test could predict future results
A retrospective backtest is more informative when the model’s rules were frozen before evaluation on genuinely unseen races. If the same data was used to develop or repeatedly tune a model, its historical results may overstate how well it will perform on new races. Ask whether every feature was available at the time of the supposed bet: information that only became available later can leak into a test and make it unrealistic.
Look for a forward test, too. Selections, timestamps, prices, and rules should be logged before outcomes are known, with changes tracked rather than quietly replacing earlier results. The British Racecourses guide to horse racing betting models warns that overfitting, variance, unrealistic prices, and information leakage can all produce misleading historical profitability. It recommends considering out-of-sample performance, calibration, closing-price results, drawdown, realistic prices, and forward testing together.

Use probability and market evidence as supporting checks
Calibration
If a provider publishes probabilities, ask whether they are calibrated. Across a sufficiently large group of selections assigned similar probabilities, the observed win rate should be close to the stated probability. A model can rank contenders reasonably well while still giving probabilities that are too high or too low for betting decisions.
Closing line value
Closing line value (CLV) compares a selection’s recorded price with a later or closing market price. Consistently beating a clearly defined closing reference can be useful evidence about the quality of the prices the model obtained, but it does not guarantee profit. Check which market and timestamp are used, how the odds are compared, and whether commission or other deductions are treated consistently.

Calibration can matter beyond racing, but cross-sport findings are not racing benchmarks. A 2023 study by Conor Walsh and Alok Joshi compared accuracy-based and calibration-based model selection in NBA betting experiments. It reported average ROI of +34.69% for the calibration-selected approach and -35.17% for the accuracy-selected approach in that study. Those results concern NBA experiments; they do not establish a target ROI or expected performance for a horse racing model.
Compare models only on like-for-like terms
Before ranking two records, align their scope and assumptions. A model covering one country’s flat races cannot be fairly compared with one covering a different geography, race type, or bet type unless those differences are made explicit. The same applies to time windows, selection tiers, odds source and timestamp, settlement rules, deductions, staking, and whether results are live or backtested.
Compare ROI and strike rate with sample size, odds profile, drawdown, losing runs, calibration, CLV, and out-of-sample evidence. If a material condition differs, explain the difference instead of treating the larger headline ROI as the winner. No universal ROI threshold establishes that a horse racing model has a durable edge.
Keep your own record if you are evaluating picks
A simple betting log can help you compare a provider’s selections with the prices and outcomes you actually observed. Record the selection, race and date, timestamp, available price, stake, bet type, settlement, and result before and after each race. This can help reveal differences between a published record and your own experience, but it does not independently audit the provider or make betting profitable.
