When critics and players disagree, neither side automatically has the better answer. Metacritic’s Metascore is a weighted aggregate of selected critic and publication reviews, while Steam’s User Review score is the share of positive recommendations among qualifying player reviews. Treat them as different evidence streams: align the game’s platform and version, check how many reviews and which dates are represented, read the repeated reasons behind the ratings, investigate unusual spikes, and then give the most weight to issues that affect the way you plan to play.
What the two scores actually measure
A score gap is meaningful only after you identify what each number includes. The two systems do not survey the same people, use the same scale, or ask exactly the same question.

Metacritic’s Metascore
Metacritic describes a Metascore as a weighted average of reviews from selected critics and publications. For games, it converts the publications’ own scores to a 0–100 scale; the numeric scores are supplied by those publications rather than assigned by Metacritic editors. Metacritic also assigns different weights to publications, so the result is not a simple count of every critic and it is not a player-satisfaction percentage. User votes are not included in the Metascore.

Steam’s score is a recommendation balance: the proportion of positive recommendations versus negative recommendations in qualifying reviews. Reviews from players who purchased the game on Steam count, except for games that do not require a purchase. Steam provides both recent and all-time views, shows review history, and can use language-specific scoring when a language has enough reviews. By default, Steam excludes periods it identifies as off-topic from the score calculation, while keeping those reviews available to read.

Because the inputs differ, a disagreement can reflect audience, platform, timing, sampling, review standards, or a genuine difference in the experience. The numbers alone cannot tell you which explanation applies.
A repeatable process for resolving a score gap
1. Match the platform, build, and release state
Start with the version you would actually buy. A PC launch review may describe different performance, controls, matchmaking, or downloadable content from a console edition. A review written before several patches may not describe the current build of a live game.
Compare like with like wherever possible:
- Use reviews for the same platform, or mark platform-specific comments separately.
- Check whether each review covers launch, a later patch, a full release, or Early Access.
- Look for changes to performance, progression, pricing, online features, or required accounts.
- Remember that Metacritic says it uses the first review and score from each tracked publication. A publication’s later score change may therefore not be reflected in the aggregate.
If you cannot align the versions, do not treat the two scores as a clean head-to-head comparison. Read the technical and service-related comments with extra care.

Record the number of critic reviews and player reviews, not just the headline score. A percentage based on a small set of ratings can move sharply after only a few additional reviews; a percentage supported by a much larger set is less sensitive to any one post.
There is no universal review-count threshold that makes a score trustworthy. Use volume as a measure of uncertainty, not as a pass/fail rule. Also note whether the player figure is recent, all-time, or language-specific. A current recent score can describe the present build more closely, while an all-time score preserves the full history of the product.
3. Replace extreme ratings with concrete reasons
Read representative positive and negative reviews rather than relying on the highest and lowest numbers. Sort recurring comments into categories that affect your purchase:
- Performance, crashes, loading, controller support, or other technical stability.
- Core loop, pacing, repetition, difficulty, or progression.
- Controls, interface, accessibility, and readability.
- Single-player content, co-op, matchmaking, servers, or other online features.
- Monetization, required purchases, subscriptions, or aggressive incentives.
- Changes made by patches or the condition of the game at launch.
One vivid complaint may be a personal mismatch. Several independent reviews describing the same reproducible problem are stronger evidence, especially when they come from the platform and version you intend to use.

4. Inspect the timeline
A sudden change in review volume or sentiment is a reason to investigate dates, not proof that the score is invalid. On Steam, review history and the timeline or histogram can show whether a large cluster appeared in a compressed period. Compare the wording and subject of reviews in that cluster with reviews before and after it.
Ask four questions:
- When did the change begin and end?
- Was there a patch, pricing change, server outage, announcement, or external event at the same time?
- Do the reviews discuss the game’s likelihood of making a future purchaser happy, or do they focus on an unrelated dispute?
- Did sentiment persist after the event, or return toward its earlier level?
5. Separate an anomaly from an irrelevant complaint
Steam defines a review bomb as a large volume of reviews posted in a compressed period to lower the Review Score. Valve says it investigates anomalous activity and removes periods it identifies as off-topic review bombs from the score calculation, while leaving the reviews available to read.
“Off-topic” is narrower than “negative.” The relevant question is whether the subject is unrelated to the likelihood that a future purchaser will be happy with the game. A complaint about an external event can still matter if it changes your willingness to support the product, affects access, or signals a problem you consider part of the purchase decision. A surge is therefore a prompt to examine the evidence, not a reason to discard every review in the period.
6. Apply your own decision criteria
Make a short list of what you need from the game before you read the final reviews. For example, you may require stable online co-op, low difficulty, strong accessibility options, a long single-player campaign, or no recurring monetization. Then mark whether each repeated criticism affects one of those requirements.
A well-reasoned review can still be unhelpful for a reader seeking a different genre experience. The useful question is not “Which crowd is right?” but “Which documented experience matches my intended use?”
How to read Metacritic without overclaiming
The score is a publication-weighted signal
Metacritic’s weighting means two sets of publications with the same average numerical scores could produce different Metascores if the outlet mix or weights differ. A high score indicates that the selected publication reviews, under Metacritic’s weighting system, were favorable; it does not estimate the percentage of players who will enjoy the game.
Use the score conventions as orientation, not a guarantee
Metacritic has reported that game-publication scores below 50 generally mean negative reviews, while scores in the upper 70s or higher usually indicate an unequivocally good review according to the conventions of the publications it tracks. These are broad conventions, not universal quality thresholds. A score in either range cannot account for your preferred genre, difficulty, platform, or accessibility needs.

Do not treat Early Access as a final verdict
Metacritic does not include Early Access reviews in the eventual Metascore and enables user ratings only after full release. Early impressions can reveal the direction of a project, but they are provisional evidence. Check whether a player score was formed during development and whether the features being criticized were later changed.

It is recommendation balance, not an average rating
A Steam score does not average stars or assign a numerical quality grade. It summarizes how many qualifying reviewers recommend or do not recommend the game. Two games with similar percentages can have very different review volumes, dates, and distributions.
Understand who qualifies
Steam says reviews from players who purchased the game on Steam count, except where a game does not require purchase. This makes the population directly relevant to Steam purchasers, but it does not automatically represent console players, players using another storefront, or people who received a non-purchase copy.
Use recent and all-time views together
The all-time score shows the product’s accumulated reputation. The recent score and review history help you judge the current state and identify changes. A large difference between them deserves a date-by-date explanation: it may reflect patches, a new expansion, a server or moderation event, a price change, or a temporary campaign.
Read the review text even when Steam excludes a period
Valve’s filtering changes the calculation, not the existence of the underlying reviews. If a removed period concerns an issue you personally care about, read it and decide whether it changes your purchase. The platform’s classification answers a scoring question; it does not decide your values.
Why critics and players can disagree without either being dishonest
Different audiences and play durations
Critics often evaluate a review copy on a deadline, while players may return to a game for weeks or months. Players can therefore expose long-term progression, endgame repetition, server reliability, or monetization that a time-limited review did not reach. Conversely, a critic may provide a more systematic account of the opening hours, narrative structure, or accessibility options than a short user review.
Different platforms and technical conditions
Frame-rate problems, input latency, loading times, graphics settings, and controller support can vary by hardware and operating system. A favorable console experience and a poor PC launch experience can both be accurate. Always connect a technical claim to the platform and build in which it was observed.

Different dates in a changing product
Patches can repair bugs, rebalance progression, add content, or introduce new problems. A launch review and a current player review are evidence about different states of the game. The date attached to each comment is part of the evidence, not background detail.
Different standards and preferences
Reviewers may penalize repetition that a genre specialist enjoys, or praise a difficult combat system that another player finds inaccessible. A game can be artistically ambitious and still be a poor fit for someone who wants relaxed play, local multiplayer, or a particular control scheme.
Different incentives and sampling
Metacritic’s selected-publication weighting and Steam’s qualifying-player population are samples formed by different rules. Neither is a census of everyone who might buy the game. A score gap can therefore arise before anyone has expressed a bad-faith opinion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to investigate a possible review bomb
Use a review-bomb investigation as a structured check rather than a label you apply from the percentage alone.
- Locate the spike. Use Steam’s review history or timeline to identify the compressed period with unusual volume.
- Read a sample from the spike. Look for repeated subjects, copied wording, and whether the posts discuss the game or an external dispute.
- Compare adjacent periods. Read reviews immediately before and after the event to see whether the underlying complaint persists.
- Check platform treatment. Note whether Steam has identified the period as off-topic and excluded it from the score calculation.
- Make a personal relevance judgment. Even an off-topic period may matter to you if the event affects access, support, ethics, or your willingness to buy.
Valve has stated that its system does not know why a game is receiving anomalous activity and does not try to infer that cause automatically. The presence of a spike is consequently a signal for human inspection, not an automated explanation of the disagreement.
Comparing two games when both score streams are mixed
If you are choosing between games, place the evidence side by side instead of ranking headline numbers alone.

Statistical cautions worth keeping in mind
Percentages can create false precision. A score is an estimate produced by a particular population and calculation, not a probability that you personally will enjoy the game. Small samples are volatile, large samples can preserve outdated launch problems, and a recent sample can be current but narrow.
A 2024 study by Javier Coronado-Blázquez reported 0.88 validation accuracy for a model distinguishing negative ratings from review bombing in English-language Metacritic PC user-score aggregations. The authors describe working with more than 50,000 aggregations. That result applies to the study’s dataset and classification task; it is not a universal reliability score for online ratings and is not a ready-made test for an individual game.
Use formal studies as context for uncertainty, not as a substitute for reading the dated reviews attached to the game you are considering.

A practical worksheet for your purchase decision
Write the answers down before making a final call. This prevents one striking review or one dramatic percentage from dominating the decision.
- Define the purchase. State your platform, edition, intended play mode, and whether you are buying at launch or after patches.
- Capture both scores with dates. Record the Metascore, critic-review count, Steam recent score, Steam all-time score, and player-review count as displayed when you check them.
- Mark the evidence period. Separate launch reviews, current reviews, Early Access impressions, and reviews written after major updates.
- Extract recurring reasons. List the three or four most common concrete strengths and weaknesses, with the platform or mode attached.
- Flag unusual activity. Inspect any sudden review-volume change and note whether Steam classified a period as off-topic.
- Score personal impact. For each issue, label it essential, important, minor, or irrelevant to your planned use.
- Choose an action. Buy now when the current evidence meets your essentials; wait when the unresolved risk is central to your use; skip when a repeated, relevant weakness conflicts with a non-negotiable requirement.
When to trust a review more than a score
Give extra weight to a review that identifies a reproducible condition, names the platform and date, explains how it affects play, and matches your own priorities. A short recommendation with no explanation is weaker evidence than a detailed account, regardless of whether it is positive or negative.
Likewise, do not dismiss a negative review merely because it comes from players, or accept a critic score merely because it appears professional. The useful unit of evidence is the explained experience: what happened, under which conditions, and whether it matters to you.
Bottom line: treat disagreement as a research prompt
Critic and player scores disagree because they summarize different populations, methods, platforms, and moments in a game’s life. Metacritic is a weighted publication-review signal; Steam is a recommendation balance from qualifying player reviews. Align the version, examine counts and dates, read repeated explanations, investigate timeline spikes, and apply the findings to your own requirements. The final decision should be based on the issues you expect to encounter, not on choosing one crowd as universally trustworthy.
