Check what drove sales, how conditional the backlog is, and whether available funding can cover production, development, and working-capital needs.
Start with what kind of drone business you are evaluating
A company developing a new aircraft, a manufacturer fulfilling government contracts, and a distributor selling established products can have very different revenue patterns and cash needs. Before comparing growth rates, identify the company’s business model, segments, reporting period, and the stage of each major program. A development-stage aircraft maker may be spending ahead of commercial deliveries; a distributor may record sales and incur costs on a different cadence.

Use the same periods and segment definitions when comparing results. A quarterly growth rate against the prior-year quarter is not directly interchangeable with annual growth, and a change in segment mix can make consolidated growth look stronger or weaker than the performance of the underlying businesses.
Determine what is driving revenue growth
Separate the growth rate from its sources
Compare at least two consistent periods, then look for the reasons revenue changed: more units delivered, higher prices, acquisitions, new customers, product mix, or a single large delivery. Check management’s explanation against segment results and reported delivery activity. Growth concentrated in one customer, contract, or late-period shipment may be less repeatable than growth spread across multiple products and buyers.

AIRO Group Holdings reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $43.2 million, up 76% year over year, and a 64% gross margin in its August 13, 2026 results release. The company attributed growth to stronger drone-segment performance, partly offset by other businesses. That example shows why the headline growth rate needs context: segment mix and gross margin help explain both where growth came from and what economics accompanied it. AIRO also noted that revenue recognition in government-serving businesses can vary with contract timing, production schedules, and delivery milestones.
Read revenue alongside margin and collections
Gross margin helps show whether additional sales are contributing more or less after the cost of the products or services sold. Examine changes in margin alongside product and segment mix rather than assuming that higher revenue automatically means better economics.
Then check receivables and customer payment terms. A delivery near the end of a reporting period can contribute to recognized revenue before the customer’s cash arrives. That timing gap can make sales growth look healthy while operating cash flow remains weak. Inventory can create a similar cash burden when a company must buy components or build products before delivery and payment.
Do not use net loss as a substitute for cash use
Net loss and cash used in operating activities answer different questions. Net loss is an accounting measure; operating cash flow reflects cash movements from operations, with adjustments for items such as noncash expenses and changes in working capital. Joby Aviation’s 2025 Form 10-K reports $509.9 million of net cash used in operating activities in 2025, compared with $436.3 million in 2024—an increase of $73.6 million, or about 16.9% based on the reported amounts. The filing says operating cash use included noncash items such as stock-based compensation, warrant and earnout remeasurement, and depreciation and amortization. It also identifies future capital needs as dependent in part on revenue growth, the timing and amount of customer cash receipts, sales and marketing expansion, and development spending. Those figures describe past cash use; they are not, by themselves, a forecast of future burn.

Treat backlog as conditional visibility, not cash or guaranteed sales
Find out what the company counts
Backlog is meaningful only in light of its definition. Establish whether the reported amount includes signed orders, funded orders, options, expected deliveries, or a broader measure. Ask how much is funded, when management expects it to convert, and whether customers can defer, modify, or cancel orders. A large backlog with uncertain timing or substantial cancellation exposure may offer less visibility than the headline suggests.
One issuer’s 2025 annual report states: “Our backlog may not be indicative of future revenue and may not result in realized revenue.” The filing also says delivery schedules can change, customers may modify, delay, or cancel orders, and amounts may not be realized in expected periods or at all. This is a useful reminder to read the company’s own backlog qualifications, not just the total.
Test whether orders can be produced and delivered
Even a firm order must pass through the steps between demand and collected cash. Consider production capacity, component availability, certification where relevant, delivery acceptance, and customer concentration. A company may incur labor and material costs before it reaches a delivery milestone or receives payment. Therefore, backlog is not revenue, and recognized revenue is not necessarily cash already collected.
AIRO reported approximately $163 million of drone backlog as of June 30, 2026, excluding U.S. backlog, and said it expected the majority to convert to revenue over the next twelve months. The company also noted that government and defense revenue recognition varies with contract timing and delivery milestones. The amount is a company-defined, dated backlog figure and management expectation—not a guarantee of revenue or cash collection.

Build a cash-needs picture from the balance sheet and plan
Start with usable liquidity, not a headline cash number
Review cash and short-term investments, then identify restrictions and obligations that affect what is actually available. Include debt repayments, leases, supplier commitments, and customer deposits that may be refundable or conditional. A credit facility is not equivalent to cash on hand: availability may depend on collateral, eligible receivables or inventory, borrowing-base calculations, and other terms.
XTI Aerospace’s 2025 Form 10-K reports $16.7 million of cash and cash equivalents at December 31, 2025, and $36.6 million of cash used in operating activities during 2025. The same filing reports a $68.5 million net loss, a figure that should not be substituted for operating cash use. It describes up to $20 million of borrowing under an asset-based revolver established in February 2026, subject to eligible receivables and inventory. It also reports approximately $3.1 million of customer deposits, including aircraft pre-order deposits that are refundable and conditional in some circumstances. The revolver’s stated maximum should not be added to cash as if the full amount were unrestricted and available.
Estimate funding needs under more than one delivery scenario
Review operating cash flow across multiple periods, distinguishing recurring operations from financing proceeds and unusual one-offs. Add the cash demands implied by planned production or development, inventory, receivables, and capital expenditure. Then consider how delayed deliveries, slower collections, or higher production requirements could change the funding picture. A single cash balance does not establish a precise runway without assumptions about future cash flows and spending.

Treat these amounts as part of the cash-flow picture, not automatically as permanent funding.

Compare companies on consistent measures
Use a common set of questions for each issuer, but do not mistake examples from different companies and business models for directly comparable benchmarks.
- Growth: What period is being compared, what segments and customers drove the change, and did acquisitions or a single delivery materially affect it?
- Economics: How did gross margin change, and what does product or segment mix explain?
- Backlog: What is included, what portion is funded, when is conversion expected, and what modification or cancellation rights apply?
- Concentration: How dependent is revenue on a few customers or programs, or on government budgets and contract timing?
- Cash conversion: What do receivables, inventory, and payment terms suggest about the gap between revenue and collection?
- Funding: How do operating cash flow, capital expenditure, cash, debt, borrowing constraints, and likely financing needs fit together?
- Execution: What production or development spending and milestones must occur before cash generation could improve?
For example, one issuer’s 2025 annual report reported that four customers accounted for approximately 38%, 20%, 11%, and 11% of its revenue, and warned that program production and customer concentration could affect results and cash flow. Those are company-specific shares, not a measure of typical concentration across drone companies. Identify the issuer and period in the filing before applying such a figure to any comparison.
Keep guidance separate from reported performance
Forward-looking guidance is management’s view as of a stated date; it is not revenue already earned. XTI Aerospace’s prepared remarks for its fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results, dated April 15, 2026, gave 2026 revenue guidance of approximately $160 million or greater. The remarks described purchasing cycles weighted toward the second half and seasonality that tends to overweight the fourth quarter. Compare that guidance with actual reported results as the year progresses, and assess what delivery timing and cash collection would be needed to support it.
