Start by checking what the product actually owns and how it is legally structured; the “crypto ETF” label alone does not tell you either. Then examine its prospectus, total costs, tracking and trading quality, and whether its risks fit your investment plan. This guide focuses on U.S. spot bitcoin and ether exchange-traded products (ETPs), while noting where the checks also apply more broadly.
1. Find out what the product holds
Determine whether the product holds bitcoin or ether directly or gets exposure through futures contracts. A spot product holds the crypto asset; a futures product holds futures contracts. Their strategies and risks are different, so compare products with the same type of exposure rather than treating every crypto-linked fund as interchangeable.
In its September 9, 2024 investor bulletin, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says spot bitcoin and ether ETPs are exchange-traded commodity trusts, not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even when a product is called an ETF. The SEC says futures ETPs hold futures contracts and are primarily structured as ETFs. These descriptions concern the products covered by that U.S. bulletin, not every crypto-linked product or jurisdiction. Check the specific product’s prospectus for its actual structure and strategy. 2. Read the prospectus and reports
Use the summary prospectus to get oriented, then consult the full prospectus and latest periodic reports for details. The SEC says spot bitcoin and ether ETP filings describe material factors that make an investment speculative or risky, and directs investors to find filings through EDGAR.

Look for the following disclosures:
- Objective and strategy: What asset or futures exposure is the product designed to provide, and what does it hold to pursue that objective?
- Risks: What could cause losses, tracking deviation, or operational problems?
- Custody and service providers: Who is responsible for safeguarding assets and performing key services, and what risks or arrangements does the filing describe?
- Share mechanics: How are shares created and redeemed, according to the filing?
- Fees and expenses: What recurring fund charges apply, and what other expenses could investors face?

3. Compare the costs you will actually bear
Read the standardized fee table and separate fund-level charges from the costs of buying or selling shares. Sponsor or operating fees are not the same as brokerage commissions or the bid-ask spread—the difference between the price buyers are offering and sellers are asking. The latter can affect your trade even when they do not appear as a recurring fund fee.

The SEC notes that fees reduce returns. Spot crypto trusts generally pay a sponsor fee from trust assets; because the trust does not generate income, paying that fee reduces the amount of crypto represented by each share over time. 4. Check tracking, spreads and premiums or discounts
A fund’s exchange price is not necessarily the same as its net asset value (NAV), the value of its assets less liabilities on a per-share basis. Compare the market price with NAV, and examine both the product’s reference price or benchmark and how closely its performance has followed it. Look at recent and historical premiums or discounts, as well as the median bid-ask spread, using the fund’s website and exchange information.

A premium means shares trade above NAV; a discount means they trade below it. That difference can matter when you buy or sell: you may pay more than NAV or receive less. For crypto ETPs, share prices can also diverge from the underlying asset because of changing investor demand, issuer issues, or broader crypto-market events. A favorable result on one day is not enough to establish consistent tracking or good trading conditions. 5. Compare products on the same basis
When several products are available, compare like with like. Record the relevant facts from each product’s current disclosures and trading information rather than selecting on a single headline number.

The SEC describes bitcoin and ether as highly speculative investments. Its investor bulletin warns about volatility, potential loss, tracking deviation, and fraud or manipulation risks in underlying crypto trading platforms. An exchange listing does not remove risks in the underlying crypto market. Before investing, consider whether you could tolerate the possible loss and how the position fits alongside your other investments.
