Pay particular attention to Section 280E disclosures, debt maturities and whether cash comes from operations or new financing.
Start with comparable reporting periods
Before comparing figures, confirm the company’s fiscal year-end, reporting currency, consolidation scope and whether each filing covers a full year or an interim period. Compare like periods, not simply the same calendar years. Canopy Growth’s 2026 annual report, for example, presents fiscal years ended March 31, 2026, 2025 and 2024; treating those as calendar-year results would misalign the comparison. See Canopy Growth’s filing [c002].

Use the company’s own definitions when comparing adjusted EBITDA or free cash flow. These are not interchangeable with cash from operations, and companies may calculate non-GAAP measures differently.

Begin with the cash flow statement, not net income or adjusted EBITDA alone. Compare operating cash flow across multiple years or quarters, then investigate movements in receivables, inventory, payables, accrued expenses and taxes. A single positive period does not establish that cash generation is repeatable.
#1 Best Overall
Earnings and cash movement can diverge. Ayr Wellness Holdings, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K reports recurring accounting losses alongside positive net cash flows from operating activities in 2025, 2024 and 2023. The filing also reports $85.676 million in cash and cash equivalents at December 31, 2025; these are Ayr-specific figures, not sector benchmarks. Read Ayr’s 2025 Form 10-K [c001].
Bridge operating cash flow to cash available for obligations
Operating cash flow is not the same as cash left over to service debt. Build a simple analytical bridge:
- Start with cash generated by operating activities.
- Subtract capital expenditures, distinguishing sustaining investment from growth investment where the filing allows.
- Account for cash taxes and interest payments.
- Compare what remains with scheduled principal repayments and other required uses of cash.
This is an analyst’s framework, not a universal company-reported measure. If a company presents free cash flow, check its stated formula before comparing it with another issuer’s figure.

How much liquidity is available for the next year?
Cash on the balance sheet is only one part of liquidity. Compare unrestricted cash and working capital with current liabilities, expected operating needs, required investment and debt obligations due within twelve months. Check whether reported cash is restricted or otherwise unavailable for general use.
Then test management’s liquidity statement against the numbers. A forecast that available funds can support operations depends on assumptions about operating cash flow, financing access and planned spending; it is not a guarantee. Ayr’s 2025 filing discusses cash and working capital and management’s view that cash plus anticipated operating cash flow could support the next twelve months. That assessment applies to Ayr and its stated assumptions, not to the sector as a whole. See the filing [c001].
Map debt by amount, cost and due date
For every material borrowing, record more than total principal. The debt notes and liquidity discussion should help you identify:
Rank #3
- Principal outstanding and the maturity date.
- Coupon or effective interest rate, and whether the rate is fixed or variable.
- Amortization requirements and any large balloon payment.
- Collateral, guarantees and whether the debt is secured or unsecured.
- Conversion, call or put provisions that can change when or how cash is due.
- Covenant tests, the company’s disclosed compliance or waivers, and any breach or default.
Read covenant definitions closely: tests may depend on liquidity, adjusted EBITDA, fixed-charge coverage or other measures defined in the agreement. A cited issuer filing describes significant cash needs for debt service and discusses liquidity and adjusted-EBITDA covenants, illustrating why the terms matter alongside the principal balance. See the illustrative debt and covenant disclosure [c007].

To answer “How much debt does the company have, and when is it due?”, reconcile the balance-sheet debt figure with the debt note and maturity schedule. A headline total alone does not reveal whether repayments are spread out or concentrated in a near-term refinancing wall.
Treat Section 280E as a cash-flow issue
Tax disclosures can materially affect the cash available for interest and principal. Issuer filings describe Section 280E as limiting deductions for businesses treated as trafficking in controlled substances, potentially creating substantial current tax expense even when book income is modest or negative. The actual treatment and exposure depend on the issuer’s facts and legal position.

Review cash income taxes paid, accrued taxes, uncertain tax positions, amended returns, examinations and disputes. Read management’s explanation of its interpretation, but distinguish that position from an established resolution. Do not assume one company’s tax treatment applies to another. Related issuer disclosures explain 280E exposure and tax uncertainty in specific company contexts. Separate operating performance from financing
A cash balance can rise because the business generated cash, but also because it sold assets, borrowed or issued shares. Identify the source in the cash flow statement and related notes. Debt can add interest expense and refinancing risk; equity issuance can dilute existing shareholders. Trulieve’s 2026 interim filing describes cash, operating activity and debt or equity offerings among liquidity sources, an example of why these flows should not be conflated. See Trulieve’s 2026 interim filing [c006].
Stress-test the cash picture
Use disclosed sensitivities and maturity tables where available, and consider how liquidity would change if:
Best Value
- Sales fell or gross margins compressed.
- Customers paid more slowly, or inventory became harder to sell.
- Tax payments accelerated or an uncertain tax position became payable.
- Refinancing was unavailable when debt matured.
- The company breached a covenant and faced a waiver, repayment or other remedy.
This is scenario analysis, not a forecast. Its purpose is to reveal which assumptions the company depends on to meet ordinary operating needs and contractual payments.
Compare companies on the same basis
For a multi-company review, align fiscal periods, currency and accounting scope, then compare the following measures and disclosures:
- Operating cash flow trend and volatility.
- Cash, working capital and near-term liabilities.
- Capital expenditures, cash taxes and unresolved tax exposures.
- Debt principal, interest burden, security and maturity concentration.
- Covenant headroom, compliance and reliance on waivers.
- Dependence on new borrowing, equity issuance or asset sales.
Check each issuer’s definition of adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow before treating either as a comparable measure. Company filings are snapshots: balances, tax positions and liquidity outlooks can change with later reports.
