Start with the bank’s filings, not its earnings-per-share headline. Reconstruct how interest income, funding costs, fees, expenses and credit-loss provisions produced the quarter’s profit; then test the result against asset quality, deposits, liquidity and capital. Compare the bank with its own history and genuinely similar peers, using aligned periods and definitions. This process can reveal what changed and where the risks lie, but it cannot by itself establish that a share is attractively priced or suitable for you.
Start with the reporting period and the bank’s business mix
Before interpreting a ratio or growth rate, establish what the bank does and exactly which period its figures cover. A bank focused on consumer deposits and loans can have a different earnings profile from one with substantial commercial lending, securities, fee businesses or operations in particular regions. A peer with a different mix may be useful context, but is not automatically a fair comparison.

In the bank’s SEC filing and investor materials, identify the quarter-end date, the major business lines, any significant balance-sheet changes, and whether a merger, acquisition, sale or portfolio transfer affected the figures. The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile provides an industry-level view of earnings, lending, deposits and asset quality; it is useful context, not a replacement for the issuer’s own disclosures. The FDIC says the profile is published about 55 days after quarter-end, a stated cadence rather than a guarantee for every release.
Keep period comparisons straight. Quarter-over-quarter results can be affected by seasonality or a change concentrated in one quarter; year-over-year comparisons use a different base; year-to-date totals cover multiple quarters. Do not compare a single quarter’s amount with a year-to-date figure as if they covered the same span. Note whether a reported change is in dollars, percentage terms, or a per-share measure.

Rebuild earnings instead of relying on EPS
Trace the income statement through its main drivers: net interest income, noninterest income, noninterest expense, and the provision for credit losses or a provision reversal. Earnings per share compresses these moving parts into one figure. It does not tell you whether the result came from recurring business, a temporary gain, changing credit expectations, or a shrinking share count.
Separate operating performance from one-off effects
For each material change, ask what caused it. Did interest revenue rise because the bank held more earning assets, earned higher yields, or both? Did fee revenue improve in an ongoing business, or reflect an unusual transaction? Did costs grow more slowly than revenue, or did a one-time expense distort the period? Did a lower provision reflect better observed credit performance, or a change in management’s estimate of future losses?
Check the filing’s discussion of unusual gains and charges, acquisition effects, restructuring, portfolio changes and other items the bank identifies as nonrecurring. “One-time” is a description to verify, not a guarantee that a similar cost or gain cannot recur. When management presents adjusted or non-GAAP results, read the reconciliation and compare them with the corresponding GAAP figures. An adjustment does not become irrelevant merely because it is excluded from an adjusted measure; consider whether the item is genuinely unusual and whether the bank applies the definition consistently across periods.
The Federal Reserve’s December 2025 Supervision and Regulation Report: Banking System Conditions illustrates why the components matter: in its sample period, revenue growth and lower provisions outweighed higher expenses. That example is about the report’s sample, not a universal explanation for bank earnings or a finding about any particular institution.
Ask whether the profit change is repeatable
Build a simple bridge from the prior comparable period to the current one using the figures the bank reports. Separate changes in interest income and interest expense, fee income, operating costs and credit-loss provision. Then identify which drivers appear tied to ongoing business and which depend on temporary events, unusually favorable assumptions or a balance-sheet change that may not persist.

A quarter with higher earnings is not automatically a stronger quarter. Revenue could rise while funding costs rise faster; a large provision reversal could lift profit even as risk indicators worsen; or expenses could fall temporarily while underlying operating costs remain under pressure. The point is not to predict the next quarter from one result, but to understand what the result depends on.
Interpret net interest income and margin in context
Net interest income is the difference between interest income on assets and interest expense on funding. Net interest margin (NIM) relates net interest income to average earning assets. The Federal Reserve describes NIM as measuring the difference between interest income and interest expense relative to interest-earning assets. Read the bank’s own definition and calculation alongside the reported figure: presentation conventions can affect whether two banks’ numbers are directly comparable.
NIM is not a standalone score. It can change with asset yields, funding costs, the mix and volume of assets and liabilities, and the timing of repricing. A margin increase may reflect better pricing, but it may also reflect a changing balance-sheet mix. A decline may arise even while interest income grows if the cost of deposits or other funding rises faster.
Inspect the drivers behind the reported margin
Review the filing for discussion of:
- Asset yields: How much the bank earns on loans, securities and other earning assets, and whether new or repricing assets are changing the average.
- Funding costs: What the bank pays on deposits and borrowings, and how quickly those costs are changing.
- Balance-sheet mix and volume: Whether the relative amounts of loans, securities, interest-bearing deposits, noninterest-bearing deposits and other funding have shifted.
- Repricing and maturity: How fixed- and floating-rate assets, liabilities and securities maturities affect the pace at which rates feed through.
- Rate sensitivity: What the bank’s modeled scenarios say about possible effects of rate changes, and the assumptions underlying those scenarios.
Distinguish reported results from modeled sensitivity. A scenario is not a prediction that rates will move as assumed or that the resulting earnings change will occur. It is a conditional estimate whose usefulness depends on the assumptions and the bank’s actual balance sheet.
Definitions may also differ in how banks present interest income. In its Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2026, KeyCorp explains that net interest income can be affected by the volume, pricing, mix and maturity of earning assets and interest-bearing liabilities; noninterest-bearing deposits and equity; derivatives; interest rates and competition; asset quality; and fair-value accounting for acquired assets and liabilities. That filing presents net interest income on a tax-equivalent basis to aid comparison across taxable and tax-exempt income. This is an issuer-specific example, not a convention to assume for every bank. Check the bank’s definition, any reconciliation and the basis used for the prior-period and peer figures.

Assess credit quality and the cost of losses
Use several credit measures together. Delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, provisions and the allowance for credit losses describe related but different aspects of credit risk. A single favorable ratio cannot establish that the loan book is sound, and a provision or reserve figure is not itself a forecast of realized losses.

|---|---|---|
| Delinquencies | Loans behind on required payments, according to the bank’s reporting categories. | Look for direction over time and differences among loan types; definitions and delinquency stages matter. |
| Nonperforming loans | Loans classified as nonperforming under the bank’s reporting conventions. | Compare with prior periods and inspect which portfolios account for the movement. |
| Charge-offs | Loans the bank records as uncollectible, in whole or in part. | Use alongside portfolio balances and other credit indicators; charge-offs reflect recognized losses, not all possible future losses. |
| Provision for credit losses | A period expense, or reversal, that affects current earnings and the allowance. | Find out whether the change reflects observed performance, portfolio growth, updated expectations or another disclosed factor. |
| Allowance for credit losses | A balance-sheet estimate for credit losses under the bank’s accounting framework. | Read its movement and assumptions with the underlying exposures; a larger allowance is not automatically evidence of either strength or weakness. |
Break out exposures by material loan type and geography where disclosed. An aggregate credit measure can hide a deterioration concentrated in a particular portfolio. Examine the bank’s discussion of underwriting, criticized or classified assets, collateral values and changes in assumptions, rather than relying only on a headline allowance-to-loans ratio.
The Federal Reserve has identified commercial real estate and consumer exposures as areas to watch in banking conditions reports and, in its 2025 report, tracked nonperforming-loan, loan-loss and reserve ratios. Those observations are reasons to examine a bank’s actual portfolios, not evidence that every bank has the same exposure or that a named category is necessarily deteriorating at the institution you are evaluating.
Read deposits, loan growth and funding as one picture
Loan growth is more informative when viewed beside deposit balances, deposit composition, funding costs and wholesale borrowings. If loans expand faster than deposits, the bank may need other funding or may use available liquidity; the implications depend on its balance sheet and funding mix. Growth alone does not establish that the bank can fund loans cheaply or maintain its margin.
Check how deposit balances are changing and whether the mix between interest-bearing and noninterest-bearing deposits is shifting. Consider deposit costs alongside asset yields: a bank can add loans and still face margin pressure if it must pay more to retain or attract funding. Review disclosed deposit concentration and uninsured deposits, as well as management’s discussion of cash, available liquidity, securities valuation and borrowing capacity.

The Federal Reserve reported that deposits rose at most banks in its large-bank sample in 2025 Q3 while loan growth outpaced deposit growth. The observation is a dated result for that sample, not a statement about the funding position of a particular bank today. Use it as context for why both sides of a bank’s balance sheet deserve attention, then assess the issuer’s own disclosures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Evaluate capital, risk and shareholder distributions
Regulatory capital ratios, including Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) where applicable, provide a standardized view of loss-absorbing capacity. Interpret them with risk-weighted asset growth, the bank’s earnings, balance-sheet risks and distributions such as dividends and share repurchases. A reported ratio is not a guarantee against losses, and movements can reflect changes in both capital and the risk-weighted assets used in the calculation.
The Federal Reserve’s December 2025 report gave a median CET1 ratio of 11.0 percent for its sample of 22 large banks at the end of 2025 Q3. The figure is a dated sample statistic, not a ratio for every bank, a minimum, an investment target or a universal definition of adequate capital. The report also noted that earnings, shareholder distributions and risk-weighted-asset growth influence quarter-to-quarter ratios.
Read the issuer’s definitions for regulatory ratios and distinguish them from tangible common equity or other non-GAAP measures. They are not interchangeable. Consider whether capital is being generated internally and how distributions interact with growth and risk. A high distribution may be relevant to shareholder returns, but it also affects capital accumulation; the significance depends on the bank’s circumstances.
Make comparisons that can actually support a conclusion
Start with the same bank’s quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year history, then compare it with peers selected for similar scale, business mix and geography. Align reporting periods and check that the measures are calculated on the same basis. Differences in accounting presentation, tax-equivalent adjustments, business composition or acquired portfolios can make a superficially similar ratio misleading.

The FDIC Quarterly Banking Profile offers industry measures and groups institutions by size. The Federal Reserve’s large-bank results describe a defined sample. Both help place a result in context; neither substitutes for the bank’s own filing or establishes how an individual share should perform.
Use a consistent comparison set across the dimensions that matter to the bank:
- Earnings mix and the degree to which major revenue and expense changes appear recurring.
- NIM, asset yields and deposit or other funding costs, using consistent definitions.
- Loan and deposit growth, funding mix and the bank’s disclosed liquidity position.
- Asset quality and credit costs, broken down by material portfolio where possible.
- Operating expenses and the bank’s explanations for significant changes.
- Capital measures, risk-weighted assets and distributions.
For every apparent improvement, ask whether it came from underlying volume or pricing, a shift in mix, a temporary item or a change in assumptions. Write down the period and definition beside each figure so that a comparison does not silently change basis partway through.
Turn the review into a decision without overstating what it proves
A useful conclusion should distinguish what the quarter shows from what remains uncertain. Summarize the main drivers of earnings; the evidence for or against recurring revenue and cost trends; the direction of credit indicators; the relationship between loans, deposits and funding costs; and the capital context. Identify any material portfolio or balance-sheet change that limits comparisons with earlier periods or peers.
Then keep the company analysis separate from the share valuation. Quarterly results describe the bank’s reported business and condition for specified periods; they do not settle what expectations are already reflected in the share price, whether the price is attractive, or whether the investment fits a particular investor’s risk tolerance and circumstances. The figures can inform those questions, but no single quarter or ratio answers them.
