Build a defensible estimate from several completed sales, then adjust for condition, configuration, included items, selling costs and shipping. Report a range and identify whether it is a gross sale price or your expected net proceeds.
Why a custom PC has no single resale formula
Used-PC value is determined by a narrow comparison set. A desktop with the same graphics-card family can sell for materially different amounts when the VRAM size, board partner, processor, memory generation, storage, power supply, condition or location changes. A local-pickup tower and a shipped marketplace sale are also different products because the buyer is paying for different convenience and risk.

Original build cost is historical spending, not current market value. A current new-parts subtotal is replacement context, not a used valuation: it can omit tax, delivery, the case, cooler, peripherals or software, and new asking prices do not show what buyers actually completed a transaction at. ComponentPrices.com summarizes the principle well: “A defensible resale comparison needs completed sales for the same parts, condition and market, plus selling fees and shipping.”

Because the title does not specify your parts, country, condition or selling method, no honest article can give one dollar figure for every custom PC. The method below produces a range you can defend and update when prices move.

Start with an exact inventory
Open the case or use your operating system and manufacturer documentation to record the complete configuration. Save model numbers and photographs; similarly named variants can trade at different prices.
- Processor: exact model and generation.
- Graphics card: exact model, board variant and VRAM capacity.
- Motherboard: manufacturer and model, including chipset and form factor.
- Memory: total capacity, number of modules, memory generation and rated speed.
- Storage: each drive’s capacity and type (NVMe, SATA SSD or hard drive).
- Power supply: make, model and wattage.
- Case and cooling: case model, CPU cooler, liquid-cooling radiator size and extra fans.
- Accessories and upgrades: Wi-Fi adapters, capture cards, operating-system license, original boxes, spare cables and included peripherals.
- Operating status: whether it boots, runs reliably, reaches normal temperatures and has any known faults, noise, instability or cosmetic damage.
Record what is missing as carefully as what is present. A tower without its Wi-Fi antenna, proprietary power cable, side panel or storage drive should not be compared with a complete, ready-to-use system. If a component was replaced, note the replacement model and the reason; an undocumented repair lowers buyer confidence even when the machine currently works.
Choose the market and sale format before searching
Set the geography first. Compare sales in the country and currency where you expect to sell, and keep local-pickup transactions separate from shipped transactions. UK and US observations should not be blended into one average without explaining the currency and market difference. Taxes, delivery costs, buyer expectations and available payment protections can all move the final price.

Decide whether your target is a local cash sale, a protected online transaction or another channel before you calculate. The same nominal item price can produce very different net proceeds once delivery and fees are deducted.
Find completed-sale comparables
Search for your exact component models and for complete systems with the same central configuration. Sold or completed listings are evidence of what a buyer actually accepted; active listings show only what sellers hope to receive.

- Search exact strings. Include the full graphics-card model and VRAM, processor model, memory capacity and storage. Add the case or system description when looking for whole-PC sales.
- Filter to completed sales. Record the transaction date, item price, buyer-paid delivery and the condition stated by the seller.
- Remove mismatches. Exclude bundles, laptops, accessory-only listings, broken or untested items, repair listings and systems missing a major component.
- Separate sale formats. Keep local pickup with local pickup and shipped sales with shipped sales. Do not mix a component auction with a complete tower.
- Collect several observations. One unusually high or low transaction should not determine the estimate. A wider price spread means you should publish a wider range or lower your confidence.
Include shipping in the comparable when the buyer paid it. For example, a buyer who paid a separate delivery charge still paid that amount to obtain the item; compare delivered totals consistently across listings. If the seller offered free delivery, account for the fact that the seller absorbed that cost when you later estimate net proceeds.
Write down the date window and number of usable sales. Prices are volatile, so a cluster of recent transactions is more useful than a much older result that happens to match the model number.
Summarize the evidence instead of chasing a precise number
For well-matched sales, use the median or a middle range rather than the highest result. The median reduces the influence of an outlier and communicates the uncertainty that naturally exists in a thin market. State how many comparisons you found, the date range, the geography and the assumed condition.
PC Atlas labels a target backed by at least three sales in its 90-day window as “Verified” and a target with fewer sales as “Estimated.” That is PC Atlas’s own methodology, not an industry-wide rule. You can use three recent, genuinely comparable transactions as a practical confidence checkpoint, but do not call a figure verified merely because three loosely similar listings exist.
If exact matches are scarce, use an adjacent model only as a clearly labeled proxy. Explain what differs—for example, a neighboring graphics-card variant or a different memory capacity—and reduce confidence. Never present an adjacent-model average as an exact valuation.

Use a range with a stated basis
A useful report has four parts:
- Likely gross range: the middle of the relevant completed-sale results.
- Condition assumption: fully working, tested and complete, or a specific limitation.
- Market assumption: country, currency, pickup or shipping and the sale-date window.
- Confidence: high when several recent exact matches cluster tightly; lower when matches are few, old or based on adjacent models.
Keep the asking price separate from the expected transaction price. You may list slightly above the middle of the evidence to allow negotiation, but the completed sales—not the initial ask—should anchor the expected outcome.

Estimate a part-out baseline by finding supported completed-sale values for the CPU, graphics card, motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, case and cooler. Add only components for which the market evidence is reasonably comparable. This total answers, “What might these pieces bring separately?” It does not automatically answer, “What will someone pay for my assembled PC?”
Then perform a separate complete-PC check using systems with similar performance, age, configuration and condition. A buyer may value a tested, cable-managed, ready-to-play tower differently from a box of separate parts, while a buyer seeking upgrades may prefer individual components. No universal bundle discount or whole-system premium is established by the available sources, so let matched sales decide rather than applying a fixed percentage.
Compare the alternatives on more than headline price:

PC Game Check’s August 2026 US guide estimates that parting out “sometimes” earns 15–30% more than a whole-system sale. That is an editorial estimate, not a guaranteed premium. The same guide says a typical gaming PC’s graphics card represents 50–70% of resale value and suggests adding 40–60% to a graphics-card value for the other components. Treat both figures as rules of thumb only; do not use them when actual matching complete-system sales are available, and do not assume they apply outside the guide’s US context.

Adjust for condition, completeness and proof of operation
Condition determines which comparables belong in your set. A fully working, tested computer should not be priced like a machine with an intermittent fault, unknown history or missing accessories. Describe cosmetic wear honestly, including dents, yellowed plastic, damaged ports, fan noise and scratches visible in photographs.
Prepare evidence a buyer can verify
- Clean dust from filters, fans and accessible surfaces without disturbing cables or components.
- Photograph the exterior, interior, serial or model labels where safe, and every included accessory.
- Show the machine powered on and display the exact CPU, graphics card, memory and storage in the operating system or firmware.
- State what was tested, such as booting, normal desktop operation and a representative game or workload, without claiming a performance benchmark you did not run.
- Disclose faults, repairs, overclocking, replaced parts and any component that is not included.
A 2026 US guide recommends cleaning the PC, listing exact specifications, showing that it runs and pricing against sold listings. These steps build trust but do not establish a fixed dollar premium. An electric air duster is optional equipment, not a valuation requirement; use safe, non-spinning-fan cleaning practices and follow the component manufacturers’ warnings.
Calculate gross price and net proceeds separately
Use this simple accounting sequence:
- Choose the likely completed-sale price from your comparable range.
- Add or subtract any delivery amount so the comparison uses the same delivered-price basis.
- Deduct the selling-platform fee that applies to your category and account.
- Deduct seller-paid shipping, packing materials, insurance and any local delivery cost.
- Report the remainder as expected net proceeds, not as the PC’s headline market price.
Fees and policies vary by platform and can change, so verify the current terms before publishing or relying on a specific percentage. Buyer-paid shipping must be treated consistently: either compare delivered totals throughout or compare item prices while separately accounting for who pays delivery. A listing that appears to sell for more can leave you with less after a high shipping bill, packing cost or fee.
For a part-out decision, calculate net proceeds for every component, not just the graphics card. Include the time required to photograph, list, answer questions, pack and resolve disputes. A theoretical component total is not superior if several low-value items never sell or if additional shipping consumes the difference.

Set an asking price without losing the evidence
Choose an asking price inside or slightly above the observed middle range only when your machine is cleaner, more complete or better documented than the comparables. A high ask can be justified by a transferable warranty, original packaging or unusually strong condition, but those benefits should be visible and explained rather than assumed.

Use a clear specification-first title and put the details near the top of the description. State the exact CPU, graphics-card model and VRAM, memory generation and capacity, storage type and capacity, motherboard, power supply wattage, case, cooler, operating-system status, included accessories, location and delivery terms. Say whether the price is firm, negotiable or pickup-only.
Photographs should answer the buyer’s first questions: Is the side panel present? Is the interior clean? Which ports and connectors are available? Does the system power on? Keep screenshots or a short demonstration ready, while removing personal accounts and data before sale. Back up files, sign out, securely erase storage and reset the operating system according to the drive manufacturer’s and operating-system guidance.
Common valuation mistakes
- Using the original receipt. What you paid may include launch pricing, tax, labor or upgrades that the used market no longer values.
- Using a new-parts cart as the answer. Replacement cost is not a completed used transaction and can omit several parts and costs.
- Anchoring on an active listing. An unsold high ask is not evidence of buyer demand.
- Mixing countries or currencies. A UK result and a US result cannot form one average without an explicit conversion and market explanation.
- Mixing working and faulty hardware. Broken, untested and repair listings belong in a different comparison set.
- Ignoring memory and variant details. Different VRAM amounts, board designs and memory generations can change demand.
- Counting a bundle as a component sale. A monitor, keyboard or game bundle can inflate the apparent value of the tower or part.
- Forgetting delivered cost. Shipping paid by the buyer still affects what the buyer spent; shipping paid by you reduces your net.
- Quoting false precision. Sparse or widely scattered sales support a range and lower confidence, not a number with two decimal places.
- Assuming a universal depreciation rate. No general, independent dataset establishes one age-based percentage for every custom gaming PC.
A repeatable worksheet
Keep one record for each comparable and one summary for your own listing.
- Write the complete inventory and note every fault or missing item.
- Choose the country, currency, pickup or shipping format and a recent sale window.
- Collect several completed sales for exact components and similar complete PCs.
- Remove bundles, accessories, damaged items, untested items and obvious model mismatches.
- Record item price, delivery paid by the buyer, date, condition and listing format.
- Calculate a median or middle range and note the number of observations and outliers.
- Build a separate component baseline and compare it with complete-system evidence.
- Estimate fees, packing and delivery to convert a gross price into net proceeds.
- Set an asking price, write the condition clearly and state your confidence and assumptions.
- Refresh the comparison shortly before listing because marketplace prices and fees change.
The final answer to “What is my PC worth?” should therefore read like a small market report: a range, the transactions supporting it, the condition and geography assumed, and the net amount you expect after selling costs. That is more reliable than a build-cost percentage, a single enthusiastic community reply or a current new-parts subtotal.
