The real cost of a Steam Machine setup is not simply the advertised machine price. Calculate it from the exact storage and controller configuration, then add local tax and delivery, any display or controller you do not already own, optional storage, games, and missing peripherals.
Use this formula: real setup total = selected Steam Machine configuration + tax and delivery + controller (only if needed and not bundled) + display (only if needed) + storage expansion (optional) + games + peripherals or cables you lack. Keep one-time hardware purchases separate from optional recurring spending, and use your local checkout page for every price that can change.

Why the advertised machine price is only the starting point
A Steam Machine can be a complete gaming system, but it is not automatically a complete living-room setup. One buyer may already have a 4K television, a controller and an HDMI cable. Another may need a display, input device, extra storage and several games. Those two people can pay very different totals for the same computer.

Valve lists two NVMe storage capacities, 512GB and 2TB, and shows each with a controller-bundle option. That creates four purchasing choices rather than one universal base model. The retrieved Valve product text does not expose a complete current regional checkout price table, so the price shown at checkout in your country is the authoritative starting number.

A PC Gamer report dated June 22, 2026, reported starting prices of $1,049 in the United States and £879 in the United Kingdom. Those are dated secondary reports of starting prices, not a complete current price list, a guaranteed price in every region, or a total for a usable setup. Taxes, delivery, stock, currency conversion and the difference between bundle variants can change the amount you actually pay.
Choose the exact Steam Machine configuration first
Do not estimate from a headline price until you know both the storage tier and whether the controller is included. Record the configuration name, the local currency price, tax treatment, delivery charge and the contents of the box in your worksheet.
| Configuration choice | What it includes according to Valve’s product listing | Price treatment | Who should consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512GB, machine only | Steam Machine with 512GB NVMe storage; controller is not part of this choice | Current checkout price not stated in the retrieved Valve text; verify locally | Someone who already owns a suitable controller or plans to use another supported input device |
| 512GB with controller | 512GB NVMe Steam Machine and the controller bundle shown by Valve | Current checkout price and bundle difference not stated in the retrieved Valve text; verify locally | Someone starting without a controller and comfortable adding storage later if needed |
| 2TB, machine only | Steam Machine with 2TB NVMe storage; controller is not part of this choice | Current checkout price not stated in the retrieved Valve text; verify locally | Someone who owns a controller and expects a larger local game library |
| 2TB with controller | 2TB NVMe Steam Machine and the controller bundle shown by Valve | Current checkout price and bundle difference not stated in the retrieved Valve text; verify locally | Someone needing both more internal space and a controller immediately |
The 512GB and 2TB capacities are listed specifications, not promises of identical free space after the operating system and updates are installed. Check the storage shown by the system after setup before deciding how urgently you need expansion.

Use a worksheet that separates known costs from optional costs
Copy the following fields into a note or spreadsheet. Leave a line at zero when you already own the item, rather than adding a typical retail price that does not apply to you.
- Selected configuration: write 512GB or 2TB, machine-only or controller bundle, and the current local checkout price.
- Tax and delivery: enter the sales tax, VAT, customs charge, delivery fee and any order fee that appears before payment. If tax is included in the displayed price, record that fact so you do not add it twice.
- Controller: enter the current price only if your selected configuration does not include one and you need one. Enter zero if you already own a suitable controller or selected the bundle.
- Display: enter a television or monitor only when you do not already have a suitable screen. Record the screen price, stand or wall-mount cost if needed, and any delivery charge.
- Storage expansion: enter the price of a compatible high-speed microSD card only if you need more capacity. Keep this separate from the 2TB upgrade decision.
- Games: add the titles you plan to buy at the current Steam Store prices for your account’s region. A game you already own should be recorded as zero for this purchase.
- Missing peripherals and cables: add only items you lack, such as a keyboard for initial setup, a mouse for desktop tasks, an optical or wired network adapter if your location requires one, or a replacement cable after you confirm the box contents.
Add the first seven lines for your one-time setup total. Do not hide optional items inside the machine price: a television, extra storage and games are choices, not universal requirements.
Record the checkout price, not a search-result price
Prices and availability can change. At checkout, confirm that the selected storage and controller options remain selected, note whether tax is included, and save the final order summary. A regional storefront may show a different currency, delivery policy or stock status from a United States or United Kingdom report.
Check what is actually in the box
Do not assume a cable, stand, controller, keyboard or other accessory is included because a retailer photograph displays it. Use the current contents list for the exact configuration. If the listing does not state an item, leave it out of the estimate until you verify it.

What the hardware means for your budget
Valve lists a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores and 12 threads, up to a 4.8GHz clock and a 30W TDP. The graphics processor is a semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 design with 28 compute units, a 2.45GHz maximum sustained clock and a 110W TDP. System memory is 16GB DDR5, supplemented by 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory.
| Specification | Valve-listed detail | Cost implication |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Semi-custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores/12 threads, up to 4.8GHz, 30W TDP | You do not buy a separate processor or cooler for the Steam Machine configuration |
| GPU | Semi-custom AMD RDNA 3, 28 compute units, 2.45GHz maximum sustained clock, 110W TDP | The graphics hardware is part of the machine price; an external graphics card is not a normal setup line item |
| Memory | 16GB DDR5 system memory plus 8GB GDDR6 VRAM | Memory is specified as part of the system; do not add a separate RAM purchase unless a later official upgrade option says otherwise |
| Internal storage | 512GB or 2TB NVMe | Choose between the two initial capacities, then compare the price of expansion with the larger model |
| Expansion | High-speed microSD card slot | Additional storage is optional and should be priced from a current local listing |
Valve marks some specifications as subject to change before availability. Treat the product page for the configuration you can actually order as the final authority on specifications and included hardware.
Decide whether you need a separate display
A display is an optional cost. If you already have a television or monitor with a suitable input, its cost is zero in your setup calculation. Valve lists HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs and positions the machine for either television or desk use.
| Output | Capability listed by Valve | What that does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI 2.0 | Up to 4K at 120Hz | It does not mean every game renders at 4K or reaches 120 frames per second |
| DisplayPort 1.4 | Up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz | These are output limits, not a promise of game resolution, frame rate or image quality |
Steam Support identifies 1080p as the default game resolution for an out-of-box experience and as the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. That is the clearest official description of the intended baseline. A display with a higher native resolution can still be used, but you should not price a premium 4K or high-refresh panel on the assumption that every title will run at its maximum specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you already own a TV
Check its available HDMI input, refresh-rate settings and location before assigning a zero display cost. You may still need a longer cable, a nearby power outlet or a way to route network traffic. Add those only when they are missing from your room.
If you are buying a display
Set a target based on how you will play: a 1080p television or monitor may match the default experience, while a higher-resolution or higher-refresh model costs more and may not improve every game. Include the screen, delivery, stand or mount and any adapter required by your chosen placement. Do not treat the maximum output figures as a requirement to buy an 8K or 240Hz panel.
Decide whether the controller bundle saves you money
Valve shows controller-bundle choices alongside the two storage models. Count the controller once: either it is included in the selected bundle or you add a separate purchase because you chose a machine-only configuration.

- Rechargeable wireless pro controller designed for Steam for Windows 11/10 & Steam Deck
- Dedicated buttons for quick access to Steam menus
- Capacitive Touch Thumbsticks, gyro sensor, programmable buttons, & more
- Also functions as an XInput controller for Windows 11/10 (wired mode only)
- Compatible with Steam and Steam Deck
The Steam Machine has a built-in wireless adapter for pairing with Steam Controller, and Valve says one adapter can pair with up to four controllers. That matters when you are budgeting for local multiplayer: the first bundled controller does not make three additional controllers free. Add each extra controller you actually need, using current regional prices.
If you already own an input device that works for your intended games, record no controller purchase, but verify compatibility and the connection method before ordering. Do not assume every Bluetooth, USB or console controller has identical support without checking current SteamOS documentation.
Compare 512GB, 2TB and microSD expansion rationally
The 2TB model costs more up front, while the 512GB model leaves the option of adding a high-speed microSD card later. The better value depends on the local price difference, the price and capacity of a suitable card, your download library and whether you want to avoid moving games between storage devices.
- Write down the local checkout price of the 512GB machine in the controller configuration you need.
- Write down the local checkout price of the equivalent 2TB configuration.
- Calculate the difference between those two configurations, keeping taxes and delivery consistent.
- Price a high-speed microSD card from a current local listing, including delivery and tax.
- Compare usable capacity, convenience and warranty considerations rather than comparing advertised gigabytes alone.
Expansion is optional because both listed models support a high-speed microSD slot. Do not buy a card automatically, and do not recommend the 2TB model without checking the current regional upgrade difference.
Budget for games without pretending there is one universal library cost
Games are separate from the hardware. Your cost is zero for titles already in your Steam library and varies for new purchases, editions, downloadable content and regional pricing. Make a list of the games you expect to install in the first month, then use the current store price for your account region. Keep discounts, bundles and temporary promotions dated in your worksheet because they can expire.
Recommended Free Tools
Storage planning and game spending are linked but not identical. A large library can justify the 2TB model or a microSD card, while a player who rotates a few games may be comfortable with 512GB. Do not convert the storage capacity into a guaranteed number of installed games; file sizes differ and updates consume space.
One-time costs versus recurring costs
The machine, controller, display, storage card, cables and games are normally one-time purchases. Electricity, internet service and optional game-related services are ongoing household expenses, not part of the machine’s purchase price.

No recurring subscription requirement for ordinary Steam Machine use is established by the official information cited here. Do not add a subscription to your total unless a specific service you choose requires one and you have confirmed its current terms. A useful estimate can be precise even when a current regional price is not known in advance. Use formulas tied to your situation instead of copying a foreign headline figure.
Player with an existing TV and controller
Total = local machine price for the chosen storage tier + tax and delivery + planned games. Display and controller lines are zero because the equipment already exists. Add a microSD card only if your capacity plan requires one.
First-time living-room buyer
Total = local machine-and-controller bundle price + tax and delivery + display + games + any missing peripherals. Confirm whether the bundle includes the controller you want and whether the box includes the cables needed for your placement before adding replacements.
Buyer deciding between 512GB plus expansion and 2TB
Option A = 512GB configuration + tax and delivery + microSD card. Option B = equivalent 2TB configuration + tax and delivery. Compare the two totals with the same controller choice, display assumptions and game list. The cheaper option is not automatically the better fit if convenience or future capacity matters more to you.
Using the reported US or UK starting figures
The reported $1,049 US and £879 UK figures can serve as dated starting-point references from June 22, 2026. They are not substitutes for the local checkout price and do not include your tax, delivery, display, controller choice, storage expansion or games. Label them as reported starting prices whenever you use them in a personal comparison.

Compare a Steam Machine with alternatives only on the costs that change
Valve describes SteamOS as an open platform that can be used on other living-room PC hardware. Valve also describes Steam Link as a way to stream games from an existing gaming PC to a television, using the existing computer’s horsepower. These are different paths, not identical Steam Machine configurations.
| Comparison question | Steam Machine purchase | Repurposed or built living-room PC | Existing PC with Steam Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront total | Machine configuration plus only the accessories you lack | Hardware, operating-system setup and any upgrades required to make the PC usable at the TV | Streaming hardware, display and controller costs, if missing; the gaming PC is an existing asset |
| What you already own | Existing TV, controller and cables can reduce the total | Existing case, processor, graphics card, storage and power supply may reduce the total | An existing gaming PC and a suitable home network are central to the calculation |
| Storage | 512GB or 2TB NVMe, with microSD expansion | Depends on the parts and upgrade path you select | Games remain on the host PC; the TV-side device needs enough space for its software |
| Performance target | Use the 1080p default and Verified testing resolution as the baseline; output limits are not render guarantees | Depends on the selected components, cooling and software configuration | Depends on the host PC, network quality and streaming settings |
| Convenience and compatibility | Purpose-built SteamOS appliance approach | More configuration responsibility and potentially more troubleshooting | No local rendering at the TV, but network latency and host availability matter |
For a fair comparison, price a complete usable setup for each path. Do not compare a Steam Machine bundle with the bare cost of a PC component, and do not treat streaming from an existing PC as equivalent to owning a second local gaming computer.
Common estimating mistakes and how to correct them
- Using the cheapest headline price: replace it with the exact 512GB or 2TB, machine-only or controller-bundle checkout option.
- Adding a controller twice: check the configuration name and count the controller either in the bundle or as a separate line, never both.
- Assuming a new TV is mandatory: test your existing HDMI or DisplayPort display first and assign a display cost only when you lack a suitable screen.
- Treating 4K/120Hz or 8K/60Hz as game performance: record those as output capabilities; use 1080p as the official default and Verified testing baseline.
- Adding a microSD card automatically: compare the local card price and your actual capacity needs with the 2TB upgrade price.
- Inventing a cable cost: verify the in-box contents before buying replacements.
- Ignoring tax and delivery: include the final checkout amount, not just the product-page subtotal.
- Converting a temporary sale into a permanent budget: record the date and region of any discount and recalculate when it expires.
- Calling a game library free: distinguish titles already owned from games you still intend to purchase.
- Adding an unproven subscription: keep recurring services out of the hardware total unless their requirement and price are confirmed.
- Assuming specifications cannot change: recheck Valve’s current listing because some specifications are marked subject to change.
A checkout-day procedure that prevents surprises
- Open the current regional Steam Machine product listing and select the intended storage capacity.
- Select the machine-only or controller-bundle option you actually need.
- Read the current specifications and in-box contents for that exact choice.
- Record the displayed price, currency, tax treatment, delivery charge and stock status.
- Confirm your television or monitor has a compatible input and that its location has power and the required cable.
- Check your controller plan: bundled, already owned or separate purchase.
- Decide whether 512GB is sufficient for your first group of games; if not, compare 2TB and microSD prices using the same region and tax assumptions.
- Add only the games and peripherals you will actually buy at this time.
- Save the final order summary and keep optional future purchases in a separate list.
Bottom line: calculate your setup, not somebody else’s headline
Start with the exact Steam Machine configuration and local checkout total. Then add tax and delivery, a controller only when it is not bundled and you do not already own one, a display only when you need one, optional storage expansion, games and missing peripherals. Valve’s 512GB and 2TB choices, controller bundles, microSD support and 1080p default help define the decision, but they do not create one universal “real cost.” Your existing equipment and your performance target determine the final number.
