Estimate your 24/7 YouTube stream’s electricity cost by measuring the average power draw of the equipment you want to count, converting that draw to kilowatt-hours over the period, then multiplying by your utility’s applicable price per kWh. For example, at an assumed 100 watts and an assumed $0.20 per kWh, a continuous 30-day run uses 72 kWh and costs $14.40 in energy charges. Those inputs are illustrative, not a typical-PC estimate; use your own measurement and bill rate.
The formula: watts, hours and your electricity rate
Estimated energy cost = (average power draw in watts ÷ 1,000) × operating hours × electricity price per kWh.

First calculate energy: kWh = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours. Then multiply the kWh by your rate in dollars per kWh. Watts measure power at a point in time; kWh measure energy accumulated over time. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) explains these units in its electricity measurement guide.
For continuous operation, use the actual number of hours in your chosen period. A 30-day month is 720 hours; a 365-day year is 8,760 hours. These are arithmetic conversions, not predictions of how often a channel streams. Calendar months vary, so name the period behind any estimate.

Measure the equipment’s average draw
There is no universal wattage for a “YouTube streaming PC.” Draw varies with the computer, encoder workload and other equipment. A power supply’s rated capacity is not the computer’s actual operating draw. Measure the setup while it is doing the work you intend to estimate, over a representative interval.
Choose a measurement method
- Plug-in electricity usage monitor: For compatible plug-connected equipment, a monitor can report power and, depending on the device, accumulated energy. Check whether it measures only one device or the full setup, and whether its time resolution captures the operating period you care about.
- Utility meter or portal: Use interval data if your utility provides sufficiently detailed readings. EIA notes that some advanced smart meters can track individual-device use, but capabilities differ by meter and utility.
- Manufacturer telemetry or a stated assumption: If direct measurement is unavailable, use telemetry that reflects the workload if possible, or label an assumed wattage clearly. Do not present an assumption as a measured or typical result.
EIA describes electricity measurement tools and smart-meter capabilities, but does not endorse a particular retail monitor or provide a generic streaming-computer wattage.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Decide what equipment to include
List the devices drawing power at your premises that you want the estimate to cover: for example, the encoder computer, a dedicated encoder, continuously powered capture or audio equipment, and a modem or router. To estimate the incremental cost caused by streaming, leave out devices that would stay on anyway. To estimate the whole setup’s cost, include them and say so. The two totals answer different questions.

For a personal estimate, use your current utility bill or tariff rather than a national or state average. If your plan has time-of-use prices, use a weighted rate that matches when the equipment runs. Decide whether to include variable delivery, adjustment or other per-kWh charges in the estimate; keep fixed monthly customer charges separate because adding one device generally does not change them.

EIA’s Electric Power Monthly publishes state-by-sector average-price data in Table 5.6.A. The page listed July 2026 data, released September 24, 2026, with the next release scheduled for October 23, 2026. Treat those figures as benchmarks, not your personal tariff: EIA’s average retail price is a weighted average of revenue and sales, not the price charged to an individual customer. Its Electric Power Annual with final 2024 data explains that operating revenue can include energy, demand, customer-service, environmental, fuel-adjustment, miscellaneous and tax components. Published averages may therefore differ from the marginal per-kWh rate on your bill.
Worked example: a clearly labeled 30-day and yearly estimate
Assume a measured average draw of 100 W and a rate of $0.20/kWh. These are hypothetical inputs for demonstrating the arithmetic, not a tested computer or a claim about a typical U.S. rate.

| Period | Energy calculation | Energy charge |
|---|---|---|
| 30 days (720 hours) | 0.1 kW × 720 hours = 72 kWh | 72 kWh × $0.20/kWh = $14.40 |
| 365 days (8,760 hours) | 0.1 kW × 8,760 hours = 876 kWh | 876 kWh × $0.20/kWh = $175.20 |
Replace both assumptions with your measured average and applicable bill rate. The result scales linearly: doubling the draw, hours or rate doubles the calculated energy charge.
What this estimate does—and does not—count
This is the electricity cost of the local equipment you chose to include at your home or premises. It does not include viewers’ device electricity or YouTube’s remote infrastructure. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers resolution, frame rate and bitrate settings, and says the platform transcodes live streams into formats for different devices and networks; that workflow does not establish your PC’s power draw or quantify YouTube’s remote energy use.

Local hardware or a cloud service?
The formula above helps price the local-electricity portion of running your stream. A broader operating comparison should also consider hardware purchase and replacement, service fees, storage or archive needs, control, uptime needs, and dependence on your home power and internet. Keep electricity and any cloud-service charge as separate line items; a hosted service does not make a household electricity estimate equivalent to the total cost of operating a channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
