Estimate an AI chatbot interaction’s operational carbon emissions with this equation: emissions (gCO₂e) = energy per interaction (Wh) ÷ 1,000 × electricity carbon intensity (gCO₂e/kWh). You need an energy estimate for the prompt and response, plus the carbon intensity of the electricity serving the workload. If the provider does not disclose those inputs for your session, report a scenario or range—not a measured personal footprint.
A useful published reference is Google’s May 2025 measurement for the median Gemini Apps text-generation prompt: 0.24 Wh of energy and 0.03 gCO₂e. That is a dated, provider-specific result with a stated measurement boundary; it is not a universal value for every chatbot, model, prompt, region or date.

What the carbon-intensity factor means
The factor expresses how many grams of carbon-dioxide equivalent are associated with one kilowatt-hour of electricity. It varies by grid, location, time period and accounting method. A workload using the same amount of electricity can therefore have different operational emissions on different grids. A provider’s market-based accounting may also recognize contractual clean-energy procurement, while a location-based factor describes the physical grid mix.
A published reference point—and what it does not prove
Google reported the following results for the median Gemini Apps text-generation prompt using May 2025 data. Google applied its 2024 average fleetwide grid carbon intensity to the measured energy per prompt for the emissions figure.

| Google’s comprehensive serving measurement | 0.24 Wh | 0.03 gCO₂e | 0.26 mL | Median text-generation prompt; provider-specific, based on May 2025 data; not independently verified and not representative of every prompt or future performance. Google Cloud’s disclosure |
| Active accelerator electricity only, for the same median prompt | 0.10 Wh | 0.02 gCO₂e | 0.12 mL | A narrower boundary calculated in Google’s technical paper; it omits parts of the comprehensive serving-system accounting. Google’s 2025 technical paper |
The comprehensive result includes more than the instantaneous electricity of an accelerator. Google’s method accounts for full-system dynamic power, production-scale utilization, CPUs and memory, idle machines, data-center overhead and other elements described in its methodology. The active-accelerator figure is consequently not a competing answer to the comprehensive figure; it answers a narrower question.
Do not present 0.24 Wh or 0.03 gCO₂e as the footprint of an arbitrary ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or other chatbot interaction. Prompt length, model behavior, region, utilization and the accounting boundary can all change the result. Google also says the published claims have not been independently verified.
A practical method when your provider gives no telemetry
1. Define what you are counting
Write the system boundary before choosing numbers. The narrowest common boundary is active accelerator electricity during inference. A broader operational boundary can include CPUs, DRAM, networking, idle capacity, cooling, power-delivery losses and other data-center overhead. Decide whether you are estimating operational electricity emissions only or adding embodied hardware emissions. Keep water consumption as a separate metric rather than converting it into CO₂e.
- Operational electricity: emissions from electricity used to serve the interaction.
- Embodied hardware: emissions associated with manufacturing and deploying servers, accelerators and related equipment.
- Water: cooling and associated data-center water use, reported in milliliters or liters rather than folded into the electricity result.
State the boundary in the first sentence of any result. “Operational electricity, whole serving stack” and “active accelerator only” are not interchangeable labels.

2. Describe the workload
Record the inputs that drive computation. At minimum, note the model or model class, approximate input and output tokens, whether extended reasoning or test-time computation is enabled, and whether the response includes image, audio or video generation. Also note tool calls, retrieval, agent loops and the number of turns.
| Workload characteristic | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Input tokens | Longer context requires more processing and memory movement than a short prompt. |
| Output tokens | Generating a long answer keeps the model and serving system active longer. |
| Reasoning or test-time scaling | Additional internal tokens or repeated computation can multiply energy use even when the visible answer is short. |
| Model class and size | Different architectures and parameter counts require different accelerator time and memory. |
| Modality | Image, audio and video generation generally have different workloads from text generation; do not reuse a text estimate without saying so. |
| Agentic workflow | Multiple model calls, retrieval steps and tool actions accumulate emissions across the workflow. |
| Serving conditions | Batching, utilization, hardware generation and power-use effectiveness change energy per request. |
3. Obtain an energy estimate
Use a provider’s production measurement when it publishes one for a matching workload and boundary. If that is unavailable, use a transparent modeled estimate or calculator. A model-derived number is not a meter reading; label it accordingly.
Microsoft Research’s September 2025 analysis illustrates the scale of uncertainty. For frontier-scale models on an H100 node under its stated workload, utilization and power-usage-effectiveness assumptions, it estimates a median 0.34 Wh per query, with an interquartile range of 0.18–0.67 Wh. In a test-time-scaling case using 15 times more tokens, the median rises to 4.32 Wh. These are modeled deployment scenarios, not measurements of every chatbot session. Read the assumptions in Microsoft Research’s September 2025 analysis before applying them.
An independent May 2025 benchmark by Jegham and colleagues reports estimates above 33 Wh for some long prompts on o3 and DeepSeek-R1 under its defined infrastructure-aware workloads. That figure is a benchmark estimate for those long prompts, not a universal per-query value. Its difference from provider production measurements demonstrates why workload and system boundary must accompany every number. See the published benchmark.
4. Select a carbon-intensity factor
Use a factor that matches the serving geography and date as closely as possible. Record whether it is location-based or market-based and whether it represents an annual average, a marginal factor or another basis. If the provider does not reveal the serving region, do not imply that you know where your request was processed. Instead, calculate scenarios using clearly labeled regional or grid assumptions.
5. Do the unit conversion
Suppose a documented scenario estimates 0.50 Wh for an interaction and you choose an illustrative grid factor of 300 gCO₂e/kWh. The arithmetic is:
0.50 ÷ 1,000 × 300 = 0.15 gCO₂e
This is an example of the method, not a measurement of a particular chatbot. If the same workload occurs 100 times, the corresponding scenario total is 15 gCO₂e, assuming the energy and carbon factor remain unchanged.

6. Report uncertainty with the result
A responsible estimate includes the date, model or model class, prompt and response size, energy source, serving geography or grid factor, system boundary, carbon-accounting basis and evidence type. If any of those are unknown, say so. Give a range when multiple plausible energy values or grid factors apply; do not average incompatible calculators and call the average precise.

How to construct a range without pretending to know your session
When provider telemetry is unavailable, use scenarios that bracket the workload rather than one spurious point estimate. For example, Microsoft’s modeled frontier-scale query has a 0.18–0.67 Wh interquartile range around a 0.34 Wh median. A high-compute scenario with 15 times more tokens has a 4.32 Wh median. You can pass each energy value through the same carbon-intensity factor to produce low, central and high operational-emissions scenarios.
| Scenario input from the published model | Energy value | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Lower quartile | 0.18 Wh | Lower end of the modeled frontier-scale query distribution |
| Median query | 0.34 Wh | Modeled frontier-scale query under the study’s stated assumptions |
| Upper quartile | 0.67 Wh | Upper end of that modeled query distribution |
| Test-time scaling | 4.32 Wh | Median in a scenario using 15 times more tokens |
These values are not a ready-made personal footprint. Select the scenario whose workload resembles yours, disclose that it is modeled, and multiply by your chosen grid factor. If your task includes unusually long context, extensive reasoning, multimodal generation or many agent calls, a simple short-query scenario may understate energy.
Why two credible estimates can differ by orders of magnitude
Workload and response length
A short factual exchange and a long answer with hidden reasoning are different computational jobs. Token count, decoding steps and repeated internal passes can dominate the result. A request that triggers image, audio or video generation should be estimated separately from text.
Model and serving setup
Model architecture, accelerator type, memory footprint, batching and achieved utilization affect energy per interaction. Laboratory benchmarks may run at a utilization level unlike a production service. Production measurements may include idle capacity and overhead that a hardware-only benchmark excludes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnergy boundary
Counting only active accelerators produces a smaller number than counting the complete serving stack. CPUs, DRAM, networking, cooling, power conversion, idle servers and data-center overhead can be material. Before comparing two figures, verify that both use the same boundary.
Carbon-accounting basis
Grid intensity changes by region and time. A market-based result can reflect contractual clean-energy procurement, while a location-based result follows the physical electricity mix. Neither basis should be silently substituted for the other.

Life-cycle scope
Operational electricity is only one environmental measure. Embodied accelerator and server emissions belong to a life-cycle assessment, not automatically to a per-prompt electricity calculation. Water consumption is another separate metric. Google’s technical paper describes a measure that includes electricity-related market-based emissions and embodied accelerator emissions, while its water metric covers cooling and associated data-center infrastructure. Label any expanded scope explicitly.
Evidence quality
Place direct production measurement, bottom-up modeled scenarios, laboratory benchmarks and consumer calculators in separate categories. They answer different questions and have different uncertainty. A more detailed-looking decimal is not necessarily more accurate.
Using online calculators responsibly
Calculators are useful for exposing assumptions and exploring scenarios, but they cannot usually observe the exact hardware, utilization, data-center region or electricity mix used for a private session.
InferenceCarbon
InferenceCarbon’s methodology describes assumptions for output length, provider serving sites, grid factors and uncertainty. It states that frontier-model energy is not publicly disclosed and that its figures are bounded estimates rather than meter readings. Record the methodology version and date with every result.
AIECO
AIECO’s methodology describes a pipeline that estimates tokens, output length, energy per token, data-center overhead and a regional grid factor. It explicitly presents the result as an estimate. Treat its output as a scenario, not provider telemetry.
What to record
- Calculator name, methodology version and access date.
- Model or model class selected.
- Input and output token assumptions.
- Geography, grid factor and location-based or market-based basis.
- Whether data-center overhead, utilization or embodied hardware is included.
- The resulting range, not just a single displayed number.
Do not combine outputs from tools that use incompatible boundaries or carbon factors. A calculator cannot establish the actual footprint of a private request unless the provider supplies the missing operational data.
Per-prompt emissions are not the footprint of AI as a whole
Repeated inference can dominate over time
Training a model may occur relatively few times, while inference runs repeatedly for every user and application. The OECD notes that inference can become more energy- and water-intensive over an AI system’s life cycle because of this repeated use. A small per-request estimate can therefore accumulate across a high-volume deployment.
Best Value
Water is related but not interchangeable
Water figures describe cooling and related infrastructure, not grams of CO₂e. Report water in milliliters or liters alongside, but not inside, the electricity-emissions equation. Google’s May 2025 median-prompt disclosure of 0.26 mL is a provider-specific water result with its own boundary.
Embodied hardware requires another allocation
To include manufacturing emissions, you need a life-cycle estimate for the servers or accelerators and a defensible way to allocate that impact across their useful life and workloads. Do not add an unspecified embodied number to an operational prompt estimate.
Aggregate demand matters
For a service, multiply comparable per-interaction scenarios by request volume, then revisit the assumptions as traffic, model routing, hardware and grid conditions change. The result is an operational-demand estimate, not a complete inventory of all environmental impacts.
A reporting template you can reuse
Use a statement that makes the assumptions auditable:
Scope: operational electricity for [model/workload], [whole serving stack or active accelerator only]. Workload: approximately [input] input tokens, [output] output tokens; [reasoning, tools or modality]. Energy estimate: [low–high] Wh, based on [production measurement, modeled scenario, benchmark or calculator], accessed [date]. Carbon factor: [value] gCO₂e/kWh, [location-based or market-based], for [region and period]. Calculation: energy ÷ 1,000 × carbon factor = [range] gCO₂e per interaction. Exclusions: [embodied hardware, water, training, idle capacity or other items not counted]. Confidence: scenario estimate; provider-specific telemetry for this session was not available.
This format prevents a scenario estimate from being mistaken for a universal chatbot number and makes later updates possible when better provider data become available.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Quoting one universal number: no source establishes an independently verified value for arbitrary providers, prompts, regions and dates.
- Confusing Wh and kWh: divide watt-hours by 1,000 before applying a gCO₂e/kWh factor.
- Mixing boundaries: do not compare active-GPU energy with whole-data-center energy without labeling the difference.
- Ignoring output and reasoning: a long or test-time-scaled response can use materially more energy than a short exchange.
- Hiding geography: carbon intensity is not a universal constant.
- Calling a calculator reading measured: public tools model undisclosed hardware and operations.
- Adding water or hardware emissions silently: keep water and embodied impacts as separate, clearly named metrics.
- Rounding away uncertainty: a range with stated assumptions is more honest than several decimal places based on unknown inputs.
Why standardized boundaries matter
Google’s 2025 technical paper concludes: “Without [a standardized, comprehensive measurement boundary], reported figures can vary by orders of magnitude for similar tasks, hindering transparency and accountability.” The point is methodological: two estimates cannot be meaningfully ranked until their workload, boundary and accounting basis are aligned.
The OECD report overview similarly calls on policy makers to establish measurement standards, expand data collection, identify AI-specific impacts, look beyond operational energy use and emissions, and improve transparency and equity. Those recommendations explain why a carefully qualified scenario is preferable to a falsely precise universal answer.
