Convert capacity to watt-hours (Wh), reduce that energy for battery aging and reserve losses, then divide by your phone’s time-weighted average power draw. The core calculation is runtime (hours) = usable battery energy (Wh) ÷ average power draw (W).
For example, a 5,000 mAh battery rated at 3.85 V stores about 19.25 Wh when new. If the battery is at 90% health and you assume 85% of the remaining energy is usable after reserve and conversion losses, usable energy is about 14.7 Wh. At a 1.5 W average draw, the estimate is approximately 9.8 hours. That is an illustrative calculation, not a guaranteed screen-on-time result: brightness, network conditions, radios, apps, temperature and the activities you perform can move the real figure substantially.

The calculation that gives you a useful estimate
Start with the battery’s rated capacity and nominal voltage. Capacity in mAh describes electrical charge; voltage tells you how much energy each unit of charge can deliver. Convert the two into watt-hours before comparing phones:

Then estimate how much of that energy can actually reach the phone’s electronics and display:
Usable energy (Wh) = new-battery Wh × battery-health fraction × usable-energy fraction
Finally, divide usable energy by the average power consumed across the period you care about:

Qualcomm summarizes the relationship as “Battery life = [Battery Capacity (Watt-hour)] / [Power consumption (Watt)].” The important word is average. A phone may draw little power while reading a static page, substantially more while using a weak cellular signal, and much more during gaming or camera recording. Your estimate is only as realistic as the activity mix behind that average.
Convert the label from mAh to Wh
Find the two inputs
Use the rated capacity printed in the specifications and the battery’s nominal voltage. Modern phone cells commonly have a nominal voltage in the high-three-volt range, but use the value stated for your model rather than assuming one. If a specification lists only mAh, the resulting comparison is approximate because voltage has not been accounted for.
Work the conversion
Suppose a specification lists 5,000 mAh and 3.85 V:
- Divide 5,000 mAh by 1,000 to obtain 5 Ah.
- Multiply 5 Ah by 3.85 V.
- The result is 19.25 Wh of nominal stored energy when the battery is new.
Nominal Wh is an energy rating under defined conditions, not the amount that will appear as usable runtime at the display. The phone reserves some energy, loses some in power-management and voltage-conversion circuits, and may shut down before the cell is completely depleted.

Why direct mAh comparisons can mislead
A 5,000 mAh pack at one nominal voltage does not contain exactly the same energy as a 5,000 mAh pack at another voltage. Even when two phones have similar Wh ratings, their displays, processors, modems, storage, cooling and software can require different amounts of power. Runtime is energy divided by power, so a phone with a smaller mAh figure can last longer if its average draw is lower.
Account for battery health and energy that is not available to the user
Apply the health fraction
If the operating system reports maximum capacity or battery health, express it as a fraction of the original rating. A displayed health of 90% becomes 0.90 in the calculation. Using the 19.25 Wh example, a first-order health adjustment gives:
19.25 Wh × 0.90 = 17.325 Wh
Allow for reserve and conversion losses
Not all of that adjusted energy is delivered to the workload. A practical estimate can multiply by an assumed usable-energy fraction. With an illustrative 85% fraction:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems17.325 Wh × 0.85 ≈ 14.7 Wh usable
At a 1.5 W average draw:
14.7 Wh ÷ 1.5 W ≈ 9.8 hours
The 85% value is an assumption for illustration, not a universal efficiency rating. Reserve behavior, converter efficiency, battery temperature, calibration and the phone’s shutdown threshold differ by model and operating state. If you do not know a suitable fraction, report a range rather than presenting one highly precise number.
Understand what “battery health” does and does not mean
A health percentage is a useful first-order correction, not a perfect fuel gauge. It may be estimated by software, can change after calibration, and does not describe instantaneous voltage sag or temperature-related performance. Two batteries showing the same health percentage can deliver different results in cold conditions or under a high current load.
European Union rules define battery endurance in cycles as the number of charge/discharge cycles until usable capacity reaches 80% of rated capacity. That regulatory definition helps describe aging, but it does not promise that every phone will provide a fixed runtime at exactly 80% health.
Build an average power draw from your actual day
Do not substitute a single screen-on-time number for a usage profile. A phone can spend hours with the screen off while still using energy for synchronization, cellular registration, notifications, location services and accessories. Instead, divide a normal day into activity blocks and weight each block by how long it lasts.
List the blocks that matter
- Screen-on web browsing or reading
- Video streaming and local video playback
- Gaming, including short sessions and long sessions
- Camera photography and video recording
- Navigation and GPS tracking
- Voice or video calls
- Music playback, with the screen on or off
- Messaging and social applications
- Background synchronization, downloads and updates
- Standby with radios connected and the display off
For each block, record its duration and an average power value measured or estimated under the same conditions. Multiply power by time to get watt-hours for that block, then add all blocks:

Energy for a block (Wh) = average block power (W) × duration (hours)
Total daily energy (Wh) = sum of every block’s energy
Your weighted average draw over the modeled period is:
Average draw (W) = total daily energy (Wh) ÷ modeled hours
Use the resulting average with usable battery energy. If you are estimating time from a full charge to empty, the modeled period is the entire interval. If you are estimating whether a workday will fit, model only the workday and include the standby or active use that occurs during it.
Use a worksheet instead of guessing one “typical” wattage
| Activity block | Duration to record | Power value to obtain | What can change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browsing or reading | Hours per day | Average draw during representative sessions | Brightness, refresh rate, page complexity, Wi-Fi or cellular data |
| Video streaming | Hours per day | Average draw while streaming at your usual resolution | Codec, screen brightness, speaker volume, network quality |
| Gaming | Minutes or hours per day | Average draw during the game and graphics setting you use | Frame rate, 3D load, temperature, network activity |
| Camera | Minutes per day | Average draw while previewing and recording | Stabilization, high-resolution modes, computational processing |
| Navigation | Hours per day | Average draw with GPS and the display in your normal state | Screen brightness, route recalculation, weak signal, temperature |
| Calls and messaging | Hours or message sessions | Average draw for cellular, Wi-Fi calling or messaging | Signal strength, call type, screen use |
| Standby and background work | Remaining hours | Average idle draw with your accounts and radios enabled | Push notifications, synchronization, location checks, accessories |
When you lack measurements, make separate low, typical and high assumptions for each block. Keep those assumptions visible. A range such as “about 8–11 hours for this profile” is more honest than “9.43 hours” based on uncertain inputs.
Why the same phone can last much longer or shorter
Display settings
The display is often one of the largest active loads. Brightness, refresh rate, resolution, high-dynamic-range video and an always-on display alter both active and idle consumption. A fixed 120 Hz mode can require more energy than an adaptive mode, while maximum outdoor brightness can dominate a short session. Record the settings you actually use when building a profile.

Cellular and Wi-Fi conditions
Cellular transmission and reception become more demanding when the phone is far from a tower or moving between coverage areas. A strong Wi-Fi connection can use less energy for some tasks, but the result depends on the radio, access point and workload. Compare phones on the same network mode and in the same location when possible.

GPS, camera and sustained processing
Navigation keeps location hardware active and usually keeps the display awake. Camera recording adds sensor, image-processing and storage work. Games and other sustained workloads raise processor and graphics power and can heat the device; as temperature rises, efficiency and performance management can change.
Background software
Applications that synchronize frequently, scan location, maintain live connections or perform uploads can consume energy even when the screen is off. A newly restored phone may also spend hours indexing photos, downloading updates or rebuilding cloud caches. Treat that period separately from settled standby behavior.
Temperature and battery condition
Heat accelerates energy loss and can trigger thermal controls. Cold conditions can temporarily reduce available capacity and cause voltage to sag under load. Battery age, charging history and calibration also affect the energy that reaches the system.
Use standardized endurance results correctly
A published endurance number is useful when you understand its test scenario. The European Union’s standardized phone scenario combines web browsing, video streaming, data transfer, video playback, gaming and standby measurement. The resulting endurance per cycle is the time a fully charged phone lasts in that defined typical-use scenario; a 10-hour result means roughly 10 hours under that scenario, not 10 hours for every owner.
The EU energy-efficiency index combines measured endurance with nominal voltage and rated capacity. That is why a capacity-only ranking is incomplete: the index recognizes both stored energy and the measured ability to turn it into endurance.
Use standardized results as calibration points. If your day includes more navigation, weak-signal cellular use or gaming than the standard scenario, expect a different result. If your use is mostly reading on Wi-Fi at moderate brightness, your result may be higher. Do not combine a laboratory endurance figure with an unrelated screen-on-time claim as if they measured the same workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Report a range and disclose the conditions
Apple cautions that battery claims depend on the cellular network, location, signal strength, feature configuration and usage, and that actual results vary. Samsung gives similar qualifications for network connection, signal strength, settings and other conditions. Those limitations are not fine print to ignore; they are the variables that determine whether an estimate transfers to your day.

When publishing or comparing an estimate, state:
- Battery capacity, nominal voltage and the resulting Wh calculation
- Battery-health fraction and any assumed usable-energy fraction
- Screen brightness, refresh-rate mode and always-on-display status
- Wi-Fi, cellular or mixed network use, including weak-signal conditions
- GPS, camera, gaming and video workloads
- Background synchronization and standby behavior
- Ambient temperature and software version
- Whether the figure is measured, modeled or taken from a standardized test
For a comparison, hold brightness, network mode, application versions, volume, workload duration and starting charge constant. Qualcomm recommends a standardized usable display brightness such as 200 nits for comparisons; without a controlled brightness, a display setting can overwhelm a small efficiency difference elsewhere.

Worked comparison: why a smaller battery can win
Consider two hypothetical phones, not product measurements. Phone A has 20 Wh of usable energy and averages 2.0 W over your profile. Phone B has 18 Wh but averages 1.5 W:
| Hypothetical phone | Usable energy | Average draw | Estimated runtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone A | 20 Wh | 2.0 W | 10 hours |
| Phone B | 18 Wh | 1.5 W | 12 hours |
Phone B lasts longer because the lower draw more than offsets its lower stored energy. The example demonstrates the equation; it is not a claim about any particular model. When comparing real phones, obtain comparable Wh values and use matched workloads rather than assuming the larger mAh label will win.
Measure charging and accessories with a USB-C power meter
An inline USB-C power meter can provide empirical data for charger input, power-bank output or a USB accessory. One published meter specification reports voltage, current, power, accumulated energy in Wh and capacity in mAh, with peak recording and power-off data storage. Its stated ranges are 4–30 V, 0–12 A, 0–360 W, 0–99,999 mAh and 0–99,999 Wh.
Use such a meter to answer questions about the USB path: how much energy a charger supplied, how much a power bank delivered, or how much an attached device consumed. It is not a direct laboratory measurement of every internal phone discharge path. The phone can draw energy from internal circuits, radios and the battery-management system that the inline meter cannot see. Cable losses, charging protocol changes and meter accuracy also affect the reading.
- Place the meter inline between the charger and the phone or accessory.
- Reset accumulated Wh and mAh before the observation.
- Record the phone’s starting and ending charge, temperature and charging mode.
- Let the test run long enough to average short-term changes in current.
- Use the result to calibrate charger, power-bank and accessory assumptions, not to claim exact internal battery discharge.
Turn the estimate into a practical daily forecast
Forecast time to a target charge
If you want to know whether a battery will reach a target percentage, calculate the energy between the starting and target states rather than using the full nominal Wh. Multiply usable energy by the fraction of charge you intend to spend, then divide by your profile’s average draw. Leave a margin for signal changes, temperature and unexpected camera or navigation use.
Model light, mixed and heavy days
Create at least three profiles:
- Light: mostly standby, messaging, reading and short calls.
- Mixed: your ordinary combination of browsing, video, communication, music and background work.
- Heavy: sustained navigation, gaming, camera recording, high brightness or weak-signal cellular use.
Apply the same usable-energy estimate to each profile and vary only the activity durations and power assumptions. This produces a decision range: the light profile describes an easy day, the mixed profile describes planning, and the heavy profile shows when a charger or power bank becomes necessary.
Troubleshoot an estimate that does not match reality
The phone dies earlier than predicted
- Check whether cellular signal was weak or the phone spent time switching networks.
- Compare actual brightness and refresh-rate settings with the assumptions.
- Look for navigation, camera recording, gaming or hotspot use omitted from the profile.
- Inspect battery-health information and account for a degraded cell.
- Check for background synchronization, a stuck application or a recent indexing task.
- Consider heat, cold and software updates that changed power behavior.
The phone lasts longer than predicted
- Your assumed average draw may be too high for your real mix of standby and light use.
- Wi-Fi may have replaced higher-cost cellular activity.
- Adaptive refresh rate or brightness may have reduced display power.
- The nominal-to-usable conversion fraction may have been conservative.
Change one assumption at a time and keep a short log of charge percentage, activity, network and temperature. Replacing every input at once hides which factor caused the discrepancy.

A repeatable worksheet
- Copy the rated capacity and nominal voltage from the phone’s specification.
- Calculate new-battery Wh with
(mAh ÷ 1,000) × V. - Enter battery health as a fraction when the phone reports it.
- Choose and disclose a usable-energy fraction, or calculate a low and high case.
- List a normal day’s activity blocks and durations.
- Measure or estimate average power for each block under matching settings.
- Multiply each block’s power by its duration and sum the watt-hours.
- Divide usable energy by the resulting average draw.
- Repeat for light, mixed and heavy profiles.
- Compare the forecast with several real charge cycles and revise only assumptions supported by your observations.
This process gives you a transparent estimate that can be updated when your battery ages, your network changes or your habits shift. It also explains why two people using the same phone can report very different runtimes without either observation being wrong.
The Bottom Line
Convert mAh to Wh, reduce that energy for battery health and usable reserves, and divide by a time-weighted average power draw based on your own activities. Report a range with the brightness, network, workload, temperature and software conditions attached; a capacity label alone cannot predict your day.
