Estimate runtime with this equation: runtime (hours) ≈ battery capacity (Wh) × usable-energy factor ÷ appliance draw (W). A 1,000 Wh station running a steady 50 W load, for example, gives 1,000 × 0.8 ÷ 50 = 16 hours using Jackery’s rough planning factor. That is an arithmetic estimate, not a guarantee: the station must also support the appliance’s continuous and startup demand.

The reliable way to plan is to separate three questions: how much energy the battery stores (Wh), how much power the appliance needs (W), and whether the station’s inverter can deliver that power. The steps below show how to calculate, check, measure and improve an estimate without confusing those limits.

The runtime formula and what each number means

Portable power stations advertise stored energy in watt-hours (Wh). Appliances draw power in watts (W). Dividing watt-hours by watts produces hours, but an AC appliance cannot normally use every labeled watt-hour because the station’s inverter and other systems consume energy.

The factor represents the portion of the rated battery energy that reaches the appliance. It is a planning assumption, not a universal efficiency rating. Two manufacturer methods commonly cited for estimating are:

Guidance Factor Formula Qualification
Jackery Support, published July 2, 2026 0.8 Battery capacity × 0.8 ÷ device power Jackery calls this an approximate calculation and notes that actual runtime varies with use and environmental conditions.
EcoFlow planning formula Approximately 0.85 Battery capacity × approximately 0.85 ÷ load power EcoFlow identifies conversion losses, standby use, temperature, connection type and battery management as factors. The article’s publication date is not stated.

Pick one factor, state it beside your calculation and use the same assumption when comparing stations. Do not present 0.8 or 0.85 as a guaranteed efficiency for every model, outlet or operating condition.

How to calculate power-station runtime step by step

  1. Read the station’s capacity. Find the battery rating in Wh in the model’s specifications. This is stored energy, not the maximum wattage the station can deliver at one moment.
  2. Find the appliance’s representative draw. Use a wattage specification, measured consumption or a defensible average for the period you care about. A label may show a maximum or nominal value rather than what the appliance draws continuously.
  3. Choose and disclose a usable-energy factor. Use 0.8 for the rough Jackery method or approximately 0.85 for EcoFlow’s planning formula. If a manufacturer supplies a model-specific usable-energy figure, prefer that documented value.
  4. Multiply capacity by the factor. This gives an estimated usable watt-hour budget. For example, 1,000 Wh × 0.8 = 800 usable Wh under the Jackery assumption.
  5. Divide by watts. With a steady 50 W load, 800 Wh ÷ 50 W = 16 hours. This is the arithmetic illustration published in the Jackery-based guidance, not a laboratory runtime result.
  6. Check output compatibility separately. Confirm that the station’s continuous AC output exceeds the appliance’s running demand and that its inverter can handle any startup surge. A result in hours does not prove that the appliance can start.

Using the same 1,000 Wh and 50 W illustration with EcoFlow’s approximate 0.85 factor gives 1,000 × 0.85 ÷ 50 = 17 hours. The difference comes only from the planning assumption; it is not evidence that one station will run longer than another.

Wh capacity is not the same as W output

Capacity answers “how much energy is stored?” Output answers “how much power can the station supply now?” A station can have enough Wh for a long runtime calculation yet still fail to start an appliance if its inverter’s continuous or startup rating is too low.

Continuous demand

Compare the appliance’s normal running wattage with the station’s continuous AC output rating. When several devices will operate at once, add their simultaneous running demand and compare that total with the continuous rating. Leave practical headroom rather than treating the rating as an exact target.

Startup demand

Motors and compressors can draw more power when starting than they do after they are running. Check the station’s documented surge or peak capability against that startup requirement. Runtime arithmetic based on the lower running wattage cannot account for a failed startup.

Outlet and connection limits

The calculation also depends on how the appliance is connected. EcoFlow specifically lists connection type among the variables affecting usable energy. A figure calculated for an AC outlet should not automatically be applied to a USB or other output without checking the station’s specifications and the relevant conversion path.

Use a realistic appliance draw

The wattage printed on an appliance is not always the wattage it uses throughout an entire session. A stable load makes the simple formula most useful. Jackery’s examples of relatively steady loads include laptops, fans, phone and tablet chargers, and small humidifiers.

Stable loads

For a device whose consumption stays close to one level, use that representative wattage in the denominator. If the device has selectable modes, calculate each mode separately or use the mode you actually intend to run.

Loads that cycle

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners can switch compressors or fans on and off. Jackery says its approximate method is not suitable for variable or high-startup devices such as these. For a cycling appliance, an average over a representative period is more informative than assuming the compressor runs continuously, but there is no universal measurement protocol in the cited guidance. Record the conditions and period used so another person can understand the estimate.

Why averages can mislead

A low average may hide a high startup spike. Conversely, a brief high reading may not represent an appliance’s normal operation. Treat the average and the startup check as separate inputs: one estimates energy consumption over time, while the other tests whether the station can deliver the initial burst.

How to find the appliance’s actual draw

If the appliance’s real consumption is unknown, an optional plug-in electricity usage meter can help with compatible AC appliances. Use the meter to observe the device in the operating mode and conditions you plan to use, then record a representative value in watts. The meter is a measurement aid, not a substitute for checking the station’s output rating.

A practical measurement sequence

  1. Connect the meter between the wall outlet and the appliance, following the meter’s safety instructions.
  2. Run the appliance in the intended mode long enough to capture normal behavior, including any cycling that matters to your use case.
  3. Note both the ordinary running reading and any visible startup or peak indication the meter provides.
  4. Use the representative running value in the runtime formula, and compare the startup observation with the station’s surge specification.
  5. Repeat under unusually cold, hot, heavily loaded or high-performance conditions if those conditions are part of your plan.

Measurements from a wall outlet include the building’s AC supply path, while a station’s own conversion losses may differ. Use the result as a better load estimate, not as a promise of exact station runtime.

Losses and conditions that shorten a theoretical result

Even a correctly copied wattage can produce an optimistic number if the calculation ignores the station’s own consumption. EcoFlow identifies several influences:

  • Conversion losses: the inverter changes battery power into AC power and is not lossless.
  • Standby consumption: the station may use energy while its output circuitry, display or control systems remain active.
  • Temperature: operating conditions can affect available energy and performance.
  • Connection type: different outputs can have different conversion paths and limits.
  • Battery management: protective and control systems influence how much of the nominal capacity is available.

These are the reason to use a disclosed planning factor rather than dividing the label Wh by watts and treating the result as exact. For critical loads, EcoFlow recommends checking the manufacturer’s data and measured consumption.

How to size a station from a runtime goal

You can rearrange the same relationship when you know the appliance draw and desired hours:

Required battery capacity (Wh) ≈ appliance draw (W) × desired runtime (hours) ÷ usable-energy factor

For example, the 50 W load running for 16 hours consumes 800 Wh at the appliance. Dividing 800 Wh by the 0.8 planning factor points to approximately 1,000 Wh of nominal capacity. That is a sizing estimate; the selected station still needs suitable continuous and startup output.

For one steady appliance

Use the appliance’s representative watts, multiply by the hours you need, and divide by the factor you have chosen. Then compare the result with available station capacities. A station with more Wh provides a larger energy budget, but it may not be the lightest or most suitable option for your output requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For several appliances

List devices that will run simultaneously and add their running watts for the output check. For energy planning, calculate each device’s watt-hours for the time it will operate, then add those energy requirements before dividing by the factor. Do not assume every device runs for the full period if your schedule turns some off earlier.

For a critical appliance

Use conservative, measured consumption where possible, include the appliance’s startup behavior, and verify the station’s manufacturer specifications. EcoFlow’s guidance is to check measured consumption and model data for critical loads rather than relying only on a generic formula.

Solar input changes the energy balance, not the output rating

Solar charging can counteract some of the energy an appliance consumes while the station is operating. That changes the net battery balance, but it does not increase the station’s inverter output rating. A station that cannot supply an appliance’s running or startup demand will not become compatible merely because a panel is connected.

The amount solar contributes depends on the station, panel and conditions. The cited guidance does not provide a universal runtime extension figure, so do not promise that solar will extend operation indefinitely. Check the station’s supported solar input, connector requirements and charging limits before planning an off-grid schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to include solar in a plan

  1. First verify that the appliance can run from the station without solar assistance by checking continuous and startup output.
  2. Find the station’s compatible solar-input specifications and use only panels and cables within those limits.
  3. Estimate appliance consumption for the operating period using measured or representative watts.
  4. Treat solar generation as incoming energy that may reduce the battery’s net depletion; account for changing conditions rather than assigning a fixed universal extension.
  5. Keep enough stored energy for periods when solar production falls or stops.

Common runtime-estimation mistakes

Dividing Wh by W with no loss allowance

Capacity ÷ watts assumes every labeled watt-hour reaches the appliance. AC conversion, standby use and other conditions make that optimistic. State whether you are using 0.8, approximately 0.85 or a model-specific figure.

Confusing a high Wh number with appliance compatibility

Wh indicates stored energy; it does not establish the inverter’s continuous or surge capability. Perform the output check before relying on the runtime result.

Using a nameplate maximum as an exact average

A maximum label may overstate ordinary consumption, while a low observed average may hide startup spikes. Use a representative draw and a separate startup check.

Treating compressor appliances like steady loads

Air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers cycle and can have high startup demand. Jackery’s rough method is not intended for these devices without more careful measurement and compatibility checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming solar guarantees longer operation

Solar can offset consumption, but its contribution varies with the system and conditions. It does not change the station’s output rating or create an unlimited energy supply.

Reporting a calculation as a tested result

The 16-hour example is arithmetic based on a hypothetical 1,000 Wh station and 50 W stable load. Manufacturer factors are planning assumptions, and no universal independent runtime statistic is established by those formulas.

A repeatable checklist before you rely on the estimate

  • Record the station’s rated capacity in Wh.
  • Record the appliance’s representative running draw in W.
  • Identify whether the appliance is stable, cycling or motor-driven.
  • Choose a planning factor and write it beside the calculation.
  • Calculate estimated hours using capacity × factor ÷ watts.
  • Check continuous AC output against the running load.
  • Check surge or startup capability against the appliance’s starting demand.
  • Check the output type and connection path used in the calculation.
  • For unknown or critical loads, measure consumption and consult model-specific specifications.
  • If using solar, verify compatibility and treat generation as variable incoming energy rather than guaranteed runtime.

What to compare when choosing between stations

For runtime planning, compare the specifications that directly affect the calculation and compatibility:

Specification Why it matters Question to ask
Battery capacity (Wh) Sets the stored-energy budget used in the numerator. How many nominal watt-hours does the model provide?
Continuous output (W) Determines whether the station can sustain the appliance while running. Is the total simultaneous running load below this rating?
Startup or surge capability Determines whether motors and compressors can start. Does the peak rating cover the appliance’s startup demand?
Usable-energy guidance Sets a more realistic planning assumption than nominal Wh alone. Does the manufacturer publish a model-specific usable figure or test condition?
Solar-input compatibility Determines whether incoming solar energy can offset consumption. Are the panel, connector and input limits compatible?

Weight, port layout and charging features can matter in a purchase decision, but they do not replace the Wh, W, startup and solar checks needed for a runtime estimate.

Interpreting the answer responsibly

Report the result as an estimate with its assumptions attached: name the station capacity, appliance draw, factor, output connection and whether the load is stable or cycling. For the worked illustration, that wording would be: “A hypothetical 1,000 Wh station supplying a steady 50 W load is estimated at 16 hours using Jackery’s rough 0.8 factor; actual runtime may vary, and output compatibility must be checked separately.”

This format keeps the arithmetic useful without turning a manufacturer planning shortcut into a guarantee. If the appliance is critical, variable or motor-driven, prioritize measured consumption and the station’s documented continuous and surge ratings over a single headline number.
