The reliable way to size a moving truck, trailer, or container is to inventory everything that will travel, estimate each item’s cubic-foot volume, total the allowances, and compare that total with the exact equipment’s published cargo capacity. Bedroom count is only a rough cross-check: two homes with the same number of bedrooms can require very different amounts of space.
Plan for items that do not stack efficiently, then have the provider verify the complete inventory before you book. The figures below are planning estimates, not a guarantee that a particular crew can load every item into a particular vehicle.

What “moving space” means
Moving capacity is usually expressed in cubic feet: length × width × height of the cargo area. A container provider may instead sell space by container count or trailer linear feet. Those measures are not interchangeable without the provider’s own conversion chart, so compare your inventory with the same measure used in the quote.

A mathematically smaller inventory can still fail to fit when furniture has irregular shapes, appliances cannot be stacked, boxes are weak, or access prevents efficient loading.

Start with a complete inventory
Walk every storage area
Move room by room and write down every object that will go, not just the furniture visible in each room. Include packed and unpacked cartons, closets, cupboards, pantry shelves, basement or attic storage, garage and shed contents, patio and yard furniture, sports and gym equipment, tools, seasonal decorations, and items stored at another address.
Mark unusual pieces separately: oversized cabinets, unusually deep sofas, safes, pianos, exercise machines, large appliances, fragile glass furniture, and anything that cannot be turned or stacked. A generic “miscellaneous” line hides the items most likely to change the required vehicle size.
Separate what is not moving
Create a second list for donations, sales, disposal, and items staying with the property. Do not subtract an item until you are certain it will not be loaded. Recheck the list after packing because last-minute additions are a common cause of an undersized rental.
Convert the inventory to cubic feet
Measure cartons by size
Count boxes by type rather than using one average box size. If a carton is labeled with outside dimensions, multiply length, width, and height in inches, then divide by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet. For example, a 18 × 18 × 16-inch carton is 2.999 cubic feet, normally rounded to about 3 cubic feet for planning.
The U.S. Moving Protection Organization uses about 3 cubic feet for a representative medium moving carton. That is an allowance, not a promise that every medium carton has the same dimensions or is packed to the same density. Use your actual box dimensions when available.
Use allowances for furniture and appliances
When exact measurements are impractical, apply a consistent allowance to each item and record the source of the allowance. Published examples differ:

- FULL-OPEN SIDE ZIPPER — PACK A DORM ROOM IN MINUTES: Unlike standard top-zip moving bags, our full-open side zipper unzips all the way down, so the bag lies completely flat on your bed or floor — just drop in comforters, pillows, and bulky blankets without digging, stuffing, or tilting, and unload just as easily. Lidded Storage Bins.Perfect for college move-in day, apartment moves, and loading your car fast.
- 93L EXTRA LARGE CAPACITY (29" x 14" x 13") — HOLDS UP TO 65 LBS, REPLACES 2+ MOVING BOXES: Each bag measures 29"L x 14"W x 13"H with a massive 93-liter (≈25 gallon) capacity — fits 4 king-size comforters, 36 pairs of jeans, or 60 T-shirts, yet at 56 linear inches it stays within most airlines' 62" checked-baggage size limit. The 6-pack moves a full dorm room or studio apartment in one car load — no more endless cardboard boxes.
- EXTRA HEAVY-DUTY 210 GSM FABRIC + REINFORCED STRAPS — NO RIPPED HANDLES AT 65 LBS: Thick 210 GSM woven fabric with extra-long straps stitched down the sides spreads heavy loads across the whole bag, so handles won't tear mid-stairs even when packed full of books or shoes. | Item | Planning allowance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Medium moving carton | About 3 cubic feet | U.S. Moving Protection Organization representative figure; replace with measured carton volume when possible. |
| Three-seat couch | About 30–50 cubic feet | Moving.com illustrative range; measure an unusually deep, reclining, or sectional sofa separately. |
| Three-cushion sofa | Roughly 50 cubic feet | U.S. Moving Protection Organization representative figure. |
| Queen bed | About 60–80 cubic feet | Moving.com illustrative range; include the mattress, box spring, frame, headboard, and dismantled parts. |
| Six-chair dining table | About 50–70 cubic feet | Moving.com illustrative range; leaf extensions and a heavy base can alter the total. |
| Large appliance | About 60–80 cubic feet each | Moving.com illustrative range; use the appliance’s packed dimensions when possible. |
The differences between these figures are a warning against mixing several charts casually. Select one methodology, apply it to the entire inventory, and note which allowances you used.

For each line, multiply quantity by the allowance:
item volume × quantity = line volume
Add every line volume, including cartons that are still unpacked. Keep a worksheet with columns for item, quantity, dimensions or allowance, line volume, and notes about disassembly or special handling.
Apply a practical margin for awkward items
Moving.com suggests adding about 10–15% for items that are awkwardly shaped or cannot be stacked. Treat that as a rough recommendation, not a validated universal standard. Apply it after your consistent subtotal, especially when the inventory contains recliners, exercise equipment, outdoor furniture, fragile pieces that need protective space, or many partially filled boxes.
Do not use the margin to conceal an incomplete inventory. If you have not counted the garage, attic, shed, or outdoor area, list those contents first. A percentage cannot reliably compensate for a missing piano, second refrigerator, or large workshop.
Use room and bedroom estimates only as a cross-check
Room-based charts can identify an obviously implausible result, but they should not replace an inventory. The Home Depot Canada guide (2018) assumes about 150 cubic feet per fully furnished room and states that its recommendations are approximate rather than exact.

| Home type | Approximate volume | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | 250–400 cubic feet | Planning range; actual contents vary. |
| One-bedroom apartment | 400–600 cubic feet | Planning range; actual contents vary. |
| Two-bedroom apartment | 700–1,000 cubic feet | Planning range; actual contents vary. |
| Three-bedroom house | 1,300–1,800 cubic feet | Planning range; actual contents vary. |
| Four-bedroom house | 1,800–2,500 cubic feet | Planning range; actual contents vary. |
These ranges are prompts for questions, not targets. A minimalist four-bedroom home can require less space than a heavily furnished two-bedroom home with a full garage and storage unit.
Compare your total with the exact equipment
Capacity figures vary by fleet, body design, interior height, wheel-well layout, and the way a provider defines usable space. Never treat one company’s truck-length chart as a universal standard.
| Equipment or chart | Published capacity | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 12-foot truck | Up to 450 cubic feet | Example from The Home Depot Canada’s 2018 guide; not a current universal capacity. |
| 16-foot truck | 826 cubic feet | Example from The Home Depot Canada’s 2018 guide; verify the current vehicle specification. |
| 22-foot truck | 1,200 cubic feet | Example from The Home Depot Canada’s 2018 guide; verify the current vehicle specification. |
| 26-foot truck | 1,400 cubic feet | Example from The Home Depot Canada’s 2018 guide; verify the current vehicle specification. |
| 24–26-foot truck | About 1,700–2,000 cubic feet | Moving.com’s broader illustrative figures; they conflict with the older Canadian chart. |
| U-Pack moving trailer | Approximately 1,944 cubic feet | U-Pack’s stated loading space for its trailers; applies to U-Pack equipment. |
| U-Pack ReloCube | 308 cubic feet per container | U-Pack’s stated capacity for each ReloCube; applies to that container model. |
The conflicting truck figures are not an error you should solve by averaging. They describe different providers, vehicle specifications, or estimation methods. Obtain the exact model or current cargo specification in your quote and compare it with the same inventory total.

A worked example using one consistent method
The following is an arithmetic illustration, not a claim about a complete household. Suppose an inventory contains 20 medium cartons, one three-cushion sofa, one queen bed, one six-chair dining table, and one large appliance. Using the representative allowances above:
| Item | Quantity | Allowance | Line volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium cartons | 20 | 3 cubic feet | 60 cubic feet |
| Three-cushion sofa | 1 | 50 cubic feet | 50 cubic feet |
| Queen bed | 1 | 70 cubic feet (midpoint of 60–80) | 70 cubic feet |
| Six-chair dining table | 1 | 60 cubic feet (midpoint of 50–70) | 60 cubic feet |
| Large appliance | 1 | 70 cubic feet (midpoint of 60–80) | 70 cubic feet |
| Subtotal | 310 cubic feet | ||
A 10% awkward-item allowance would bring that partial example to 341 cubic feet; 15% would bring it to 356.5 cubic feet. The result is not a booking recommendation because the example deliberately omits wardrobes, kitchen contents, chairs, dressers, electronics, tools, and other belongings. Add every remaining line before comparing with equipment.

Choose between trucks, trailers, and containers
When a truck is the better fit
A rental truck is straightforward when you can load and unload on a defined schedule, the vehicle can reach both addresses, and the inventory fits the provider’s stated cargo volume. Confirm exterior height, ramp or lift-gate details, parking clearance, and whether a single trip is realistic.
When a trailer or portable container helps
Trailers and portable containers can be useful when loading time is flexible or when you are comparing provider-defined trailer feet or container counts. Ask how much usable length or cubic capacity is included, how additional space is charged, and whether the container can be positioned at both properties.
Compare options on the same evidence
- Use the identical item list and box counts for every quote.
- Compare published usable capacity, not only the vehicle’s exterior length.
- Ask how the provider handles bulky, fragile, or nonstacking items.
- Check whether one trip is required and whether the vehicle can be driven and parked at both addresses.
- Record whether each number is a planning allowance, a calculator output, or a stated cargo capacity.
Loading realities that change the fit
Cubic-foot totals assume the listed volume can be arranged in the available space. Real loading involves aisles, door openings, wheel wells, tie-downs, protective padding, and weight distribution. Furniture may need to remain upright, glass may need separation, and a safe or appliance may occupy a footprint that prevents boxes from filling the surrounding voids.
Disassemble tables, bed frames, shelving, and removable sofa sections when the manufacturer allows it, and label hardware in sealed bags. Measure the packed dimensions of unusually large pieces. Keep heavy items low and distribute weight according to the rental company’s instructions; a vehicle that has enough volume can still be unsafe if loaded incorrectly.

An online moving-space calculator can speed up the arithmetic when it lets you enter rooms, item quantities, and box sizes. Before trusting the result, check which inventory it includes, what allowance it assigns to each item, and whether it rounds the total.

- ULTRA-STRONG 200LB LOAD CAPACITY — Independently tested to support heavy-duty moves. Our signature wrap-around handles encircle the entire bag from bottom to top, creating a structural "cradle" that supports weight from the base. Combined with reinforced stitching, these bags won't snap or tear, even when packed with heavy linens, books, or kitchenware.
- THE SMARTER BOX ALTERNATIVE — Why buy expensive, bulky moving boxes that end up in the trash? One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag provides the same volume as a large box but is far easier to carry over the shoulder. When empty, all 8 bags fold down into a compact stack, saving you a massive amount of storage space in your closet or car trunk.
- COLLEGE DORM MOVE-IN READY — Save time and car space on move-in day. One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag is a dorm room lifesaver. To visualize the space: it fits 2 Twin XL comforters and 1 mattress pad, OR 6 standard pillows, OR 30+ sneakers and an entire semester’s worth of sweaters. It’s the ultimate heavy-duty solution for carrying everything from the trunk to the dorm room.
- INSTANT CONTENT IDENTIFICATION — Stop the "guessing game" on moving day. Each tote features a clear plastic tag pocket. Simply slide in a label to identify "Master Bedroom" or "Garage Toys" in seconds. This small design detail saves hours of unzipping and searching, making your organization system professional and efficient.
- PRO-GRADE PROTECTION — Crafted from high-density, water-resistant woven fabric with smooth #5 dual zippers. These aren't flimsy one-move bags; they are designed for years of reuse. Whether it's light rain during transit or long-term storage in a dusty attic, your clothes and linens stay pristine and protected.
Boxes and packing supplies: what affects the estimate
Count cartons by size as you buy and pack them. Medium moving boxes are a useful baseline, but books, dishes, linens, and wardrobe items often require different carton sizes or special boxes. Home Depot Canada’s guide pairs illustrative household categories with small, medium, large, and wardrobe-box quantities; use those categories as a checklist rather than as a universal box count.
Tape, stretch wrap, cushioned wrap, and moving blankets protect items but do not make the cargo area larger. Include the space occupied by packed protective materials when they remain with the load, especially blankets, foam, and boxed packing supplies.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Relying on bedroom count
Symptom: You select a truck solely because a chart says it suits a two- or three-bedroom home. Fix: Complete the item and box inventory, then use the bedroom chart only as a reasonableness check.
Using several charts as one formula
Symptom: You combine a sofa allowance from one source, a room multiplier from another, and a truck capacity from a third, then treat the sum as authoritative. Fix: Choose one item-estimation method and compare the result with the exact provider’s specification.
Forgetting nonliving areas
Symptom: The truck is full before the garage, shed, attic, patio, or storage unit is loaded. Fix: Walk those areas deliberately and list every bulky or seasonal item before booking.
Assuming nominal capacity equals usable fit
Symptom: The calculated total is just below the published capacity, but irregular furniture will not stack. Fix: Apply the source-specific 10–15% awkward-item allowance, measure oversized pieces, and ask the provider to review the inventory.
Failing to update the list
Symptom: New purchases, filled boxes, or a last-minute furniture decision push the load beyond the quote. Fix: Recount cartons and revise the equipment choice after packing is substantially complete.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- Walk every room, closet, storage area, garage, shed, basement, attic, patio, and yard.
- Separate moving, staying, donated, sold, and discarded items.
- Record quantities and packed dimensions for cartons whenever possible.
- Assign one consistent cubic-foot allowance method to furniture and appliances.
- Multiply each allowance by quantity and total the line volumes.
- Flag items that are fragile, unusually heavy, oversized, or difficult to stack.
- Apply the stated 10–15% rule of thumb only as an awkward-item margin, not as a substitute for missing inventory.
- Compare the result with the exact truck, trailer, or container model offered.
- Confirm access, parking, height clearance, loading time, and one-trip requirements at both addresses.
- Send the provider the complete, updated inventory and obtain confirmation before paying for space.
