To estimate a car’s on-road price in India, start with the dealer’s current ex-showroom quote, then add the road tax and registration charges for the state or Union territory where the car will be registered, an actual insurance quote, and any optional products or other itemized charges you choose. GST is ordinarily already included in the ex-showroom price, so adding GST again usually counts it twice.
What the on-road price includes
The on-road price is the amount shown in a dealer’s purchase quote for getting the car registered and insured for delivery, plus any other products or services included in that quote. It is not one nationally fixed calculation: road tax, registration-related fees, insurance and optional items can vary by jurisdiction, vehicle and transaction.

Use this as an estimate formula, not as a universal statutory equation:
Estimated on-road price = current ex-showroom quote + local road tax + registration and number-plate charges + insurance quote + chosen optional add-ons or other itemized charges.

Ask for a written, itemized quote. The total is useful only if you can see what it includes, which registration location it assumes, and which charges are statutory versus optional. A dealer’s stated total is not a substitute for checking the registration jurisdiction’s applicable rules.
Think of the quote as a set of separate decisions rather than a mysterious premium over the sticker price. The ex-showroom figure gives you the starting vehicle price; the location determines which local tax and registration rules apply; the insurer and coverage determine the insurance amount; and your choices determine whether accessories or service products are included. This makes it easier to spot whether two totals differ because of a real price advantage or because one includes more products or different coverage.
Start with the ex-showroom quote—not a second GST calculation
The ex-showroom price quoted by a manufacturer or dealer ordinarily already reflects GST on the vehicle. Begin with the current price for the exact model and variant you are considering. Do not calculate GST as a new addition to that figure unless the written quote expressly says GST is excluded.

Car GST categories stated in the 2025 official FAQ
The GST Council’s 2025 FAQ states the following rates and category descriptions. The revised rates took effect on 22 September 2025, according to a Ministry of Road Transport and Highways/Press Information Bureau release. Rates and rules can change, so confirm the current treatment when obtaining a quote.
| Category described by the GST Council FAQ | GST rate stated in the 2025 FAQ | How to use it when estimating |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol, LPG or CNG small cars with engine capacity up to 1,200 cc and length up to 4,000 mm | 18% | Use the category only to understand the vehicle’s GST treatment. Do not add 18% to an ex-showroom price that already includes GST. |
| Diesel small cars with engine capacity up to 1,500 cc and length up to 4,000 mm | 18% | Both the stated engine-capacity and length limits matter for the FAQ’s small-car description. |
| Mid-size and large cars exceeding 1,500 cc or 4,000 mm | 40% | Check the vehicle’s classification and current official rules; the rate is not a separate addition to a GST-inclusive quote. |
| Qualifying utility vehicles meeting the FAQ’s described criteria | 40%, without compensation cess | Confirm that the specific vehicle qualifies under the official definition; do not infer its treatment from the marketing label alone. |
The 22 September 2025 effective date matters: older articles or price breakdowns may describe an earlier GST structure. The figures above are what the official FAQ and ministry release say for the 2025 changes, not a guarantee that no later notification has changed the treatment. Use a current dealer quote and verify later official notices if the transaction is being priced after that change.
In practice, the rate table is a cross-check, not a calculator for the final amount you pay at the dealership. A car’s GST category does not tell you its state road tax, registration charges or insurance premium. It also does not establish the final ex-showroom price for a specific offer, since the dealer’s current quote and any discount must be checked separately. If you are comparing an older advertisement with a current quote, ask the dealer to confirm the price and applicable tax treatment as of the quotation date rather than relying on a cached price list.
Add the road tax for the actual registration location
Road tax is a major reason the same car can have different on-road prices in different places. There is no state-neutral road-tax amount in the official material cited here. The relevant state or Union territory may prescribe a calculation based on the invoice or sale amount, ex-showroom price, vehicle category, fuel type, value bands or another local basis. Do not apply a rate or schedule from one jurisdiction to another.

For example, the Meghalaya Transport Department says, “Road Tax amount is dependent on the Sale Amount of the vehicle for all cars.” Its page describes one-time road tax for 10 years for a new private car, followed by tax every five years after that. That is a Meghalaya example, not a national schedule. Check with the transport authority for the place where the vehicle will actually be registered.
What to confirm about road tax
- The exact state or Union territory where the car will be registered—not merely where the dealership is located.
- The vehicle’s category and the price basis the authority uses to calculate tax.
- Whether the dealer’s quote includes the applicable road tax and how the amount was calculated.
- Whether the quote assumes temporary or permanent registration, and whether that changes any amount due at delivery.
- Whether the registration is under a special scheme. BH-series registrations may follow separate rules; do not assume the standard state calculation applies. Confirm current eligibility and tax treatment with MoRTH or the relevant transport authority.
The dealership’s location and the registration location are not necessarily the same. If you are buying from a dealer outside the state or Union territory where you intend to register the car, make sure the written quote states the destination registration jurisdiction. The applicable road tax and fees should be checked for that jurisdiction, not inferred from the showroom address. If the quote is provisional, ask which amount could change once registration is processed and who will confirm it.
Do not treat the Meghalaya 10-year example as a shortcut for estimating tax elsewhere. It illustrates that local schedules may specify both a basis for calculating the amount and a period covered by an initial payment. The applicable schedule, vehicle category and payment timing must come from the authority responsible for your actual registration. If the dealer has calculated a tax amount, request the calculation basis or supporting breakdown so you can check that the correct location and vehicle details were used.
Include registration, number-plate and financing-related charges
Registration and number-plate charges are separate items to inspect in the quote; do not assume they are part of the ex-showroom price. The Meghalaya Transport Department’s procedure lists a registration fee, an HSRP fee and a possible hypothecation fee when a car is financed. Those are examples from that department’s process, not a uniform nationwide fee schedule.
If you are taking a loan, check whether the quote includes a hypothecation-related fee and whether it is applicable to your registration. Ask the dealer to identify each charge and its basis. Confirm disputed or unclear statutory amounts with the relevant transport authority rather than treating a dealer’s label as proof that a charge is required.
These line items can be easy to overlook when a quote gives only one registration or “RTO” figure. Ask for the individual amounts, including any plate-related fee and any loan-related fee, and clarify whether the amount is an estimate or a confirmed charge. If you are paying without a loan, ask whether a hypothecation fee has been included in error. Conversely, if you are financing the car, check that the quote’s assumptions match the transaction and the applicable local procedure.
Use an actual insurance quote
Insurance is not a fixed percentage of the ex-showroom price. The premium depends on the insurer, vehicle, coverage selected and buyer circumstances. IRDAI’s policyholder guidance says own-damage cover is rated by individual insurers after rates are filed with the regulator; it does not provide a universal premium for a particular car or buyer. Obtain a live quote for the car and coverage you intend to buy.

Before comparing insurance prices, write down what each quote covers and which add-ons it includes. If the policies are not equivalent, a lower premium alone does not show that the overall offer is better. Ask for the insurer’s name and the coverage details behind the dealer’s figure, then request comparable live quotes. A quote should be tied to the actual vehicle and buyer circumstances; a generic percentage or rule of thumb cannot replace that check.
Separate required charges from optional dealer products
A quote may bundle items such as accessories, an extended warranty, a maintenance or service package, handling or logistics, a FASTag or other add-ons. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal lawful charge list or a standard price for these items across India. Ask the dealer to itemize each one and state whether it is optional, included in the written offer, or required under applicable local rules.
Do not accept a bundled total as a single unexplained “on-road” amount. Ask for a revised quote with optional products removed if you do not want them, and compare the revised total. Keep the itemized quote and the final invoice together so you can check whether the billed products and charges match what you agreed to.

When you question an item, ask the dealer to identify what it covers and why it appears on the quote. A familiar label is not enough to establish that an item is mandatory, and the materials available here do not establish national rules or prices for every dealer-billed product. Keep the answer in writing. That gives you a clear basis to compare the revised quote and to resolve a difference between the offer and the invoice.
Build the estimate step by step
- Fix the vehicle and price basis. Record the make, model, exact variant, current ex-showroom quote and any discount. Ask whether the ex-showroom figure includes GST and whether the discount changes the price basis used for any other calculation.
- Choose the registration state or Union territory. Use the location where the car will be registered. Ask the dealer for the road-tax amount and calculation basis, then verify uncertain statutory figures with that jurisdiction’s transport authority.
- List registration and plate charges separately. Request the registration fee, HSRP or number-plate amount and any financing-related hypothecation charge as individual line items. Confirm which apply to your transaction.
- Get an insurance quote on a defined coverage basis. Record the insurer, policy type, coverage and add-ons. Compare like-for-like quotes rather than assuming a standard insurance percentage.
- Review every remaining line item. Identify accessories, warranty or service products, handling or logistics, FASTag and other additions. Ask which are optional, remove any you do not want, and verify the explanation for charges you are told are required.
- Add only the applicable amounts. Total the current ex-showroom quote, local road tax, applicable registration and plate charges, your insurance quote, and the optional or other itemized charges you choose. Do not add GST again to an ex-showroom price that already includes it.
- Save the written breakdown. Make sure it shows the registration state or Union territory, exact variant, price and discount basis, insurer and coverage, every fee, and each optional product. Compare it with the final invoice before paying.
A practical way to use the formula is to make a small worksheet with one line per quote item. Leave an amount blank rather than guessing when the dealer or authority has not confirmed it. Mark the source of each figure—for example, dealer quote, insurer quote or transport authority—so you know which numbers need follow-up. Add the confirmed figures only after you have matched the vehicle, price basis, registration location and coverage assumptions.
There is no defensible universal percentage to fill in for a missing road-tax or insurance amount. A blank on the worksheet is a prompt to request the relevant local calculation or live quote, not a reason to borrow another buyer’s total. Once the dealer issues an updated quote, check that it still uses the same variant and assumptions before comparing or budgeting from it.
Compare two dealer quotes on the same basis
A lower headline total is not necessarily a cheaper equivalent offer. Put the line items side by side and normalize the assumptions before deciding:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Quote item | What must match or be explained |
|---|---|
| Registration location | Same state or Union Territory. Different jurisdictions can have different road-tax and fee rules. |
| Car and variant | Same make, model and exact variant. |
| Ex-showroom price | Same price basis, GST inclusion and discount treatment. |
| Road tax and registration | Itemized amounts and the registration assumptions behind them, including any applicable plate or hypothecation fee. |
| Insurance | Same policy type, coverage, insurer basis and add-ons, or a clear explanation of the difference. |
| Optional products and other charges | Same accessories, warranty or service products and other chosen items. Remove unwanted optional items from both totals before comparing. |
If the registration location, insurance cover or optional bundle differs, the totals are not like-for-like. Ask both dealers to reissue the quote with matching assumptions rather than trying to infer a fair comparison from the final figures alone.

Also compare the dates of the quotes. A quote issued at a different time may use a different current ex-showroom price or reflect a changed offer. The 2025 GST changes took effect on 22 September 2025, so an older price breakdown may not describe the same tax structure as a current one. Ask each dealer to confirm the quote date and current price basis; do not try to correct an old total by simply adding or subtracting a GST percentage yourself.
When one dealer’s total is lower, identify exactly which row accounts for the difference. It may be a different discount, an insurance policy with different cover, a road-tax assumption for another registration location, or an optional product included only in one offer. If the line items do not explain the gap, ask for a revised itemization. Comparing only the final totals can conceal both genuine savings and missing or mismatched items.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep fuel taxes out of the purchase calculation
Petrol and diesel VAT affect the cost of fuel you buy after delivery; they are not part of the one-time on-road purchase estimate. The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell’s state-by-state VAT table, last updated 9 October 2026, concerns fuel taxes. Do not confuse fuel VAT with the road tax charged for registering a vehicle. Fuel belongs in a separate running-cost budget.
In other words, fuel VAT should not be added as another line in the dealer’s delivery-time total. It matters when you budget for running the car, and the rate varies by state and fuel, but it applies to fuel purchases rather than the vehicle’s registration. Keeping those budgets separate prevents a fuel tax from being counted as a one-time car-buying charge.
Why there is no reliable universal uplift percentage
There is no nationally representative figure in the cited official material for how much a typical Indian buyer should add to the ex-showroom price to reach the on-road price. A single percentage would conceal differences in registration jurisdiction, vehicle and price basis, insurance cover, financing and optional products. For a useful budget, obtain a quote for the actual car and registration location, then total its verified line items rather than applying a generic multiplier.
Where a charge or rate is unclear, the uncertainty is part of the estimate: have the dealer identify the basis in writing and check the applicable transport authority or insurer. That is more dependable than importing another state’s tax schedule or treating a bundled dealer total as a national formula.
Before you accept the quote
- Confirm the make, model and exact variant, and that the ex-showroom quote is current.
- Verify that GST is included in the ex-showroom figure; do not add it twice.
- Check that the road tax is for the actual registration state or Union territory and ask how its amount was determined.
- Read the registration, number-plate and any financing-related fee lines separately.
- Compare insurance on matching policy and coverage details, using a live quote.
- Ask for an explanation of every accessory, warranty, service plan, handling or other item, and remove products you do not want.
- Keep the itemized quotation and compare it with the final invoice before paying.
This final check does not replace the transport authority’s rules or an insurer’s quote. It ensures that the amount you are budgeting is tied to the right car, location and coverage, and that optional products have not been mistaken for unavoidable taxes or fees.

Is GST already included in the ex-showroom price?
Ordinarily, yes. Start with the dealer’s current ex-showroom quote and ask for written confirmation if its price basis is unclear. Do not add the GST percentage again unless the quote expressly says GST is excluded; otherwise you may count the vehicle tax twice.

How do I calculate the on-road price of a car?
Add the current ex-showroom quote, local road tax, applicable registration and number-plate charges, an actual insurance quote, and any optional products or other itemized charges you choose. Treat this as a checklist, not a single national statutory formula, because local rules and transaction details vary.
Does the same car have the same road tax everywhere in India?
No state-neutral road-tax amount is established here. The registration state or Union territory determines which local rules to check, and the basis can depend on the vehicle and local schedule. A Meghalaya Transport Department example describes one-time tax for 10 years on a new private car, followed by tax every five years; that is not a national schedule.
Is car insurance a fixed percentage of the ex-showroom price?
No. The premium depends on the insurer, vehicle, coverage and buyer circumstances. IRDAI says own-damage cover is rated by individual insurers after rates are filed with the regulator. Get live quotes and compare the same policy type, coverage and add-ons.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I include FASTag, accessories or an extended warranty in the on-road estimate?
Include them only if they appear as chosen, itemized products or charges in your quote. Ask the dealer what each item covers and whether it is optional or required under applicable local rules. The reviewed official sources do not establish a uniform national price or status for these dealer items.
Are petrol and diesel VAT part of the on-road price?
No. Fuel VAT applies to petrol or diesel purchases after delivery, not the one-time vehicle registration and purchase total. Keep fuel taxes in a separate running-cost budget.
Can I estimate the on-road price by adding a fixed percentage to the ex-showroom price?
A fixed uplift is not reliable because road tax, registration charges, insurance, financing and optional products can vary. Get an itemized quote for the exact vehicle and registration location, and total the amounts that apply to your transaction.
The Bottom Line
Start with a current, GST-inclusive ex-showroom quote for the exact variant. Add only the road tax and registration charges for the actual registration location, a live insurance quote, and itemized products or charges you choose. Confirm the assumptions in writing, compare like with like, and do not add GST twice or substitute a generic percentage for local figures.
