To change a fighter’s appearance in Invincible VS, open the character-select or loadout screen, highlight the fighter, and cycle through an owned color variant or alternate costume. Community guidance generally uses left and right to move through recolors and down to open alternate costumes, but the game’s official materials do not provide one universal button map for every platform or control layout.
If a skin is locked, check its requirement in Character Mastery or Collection, earn it through the required level or mode, or install the platform add-on included with the Deluxe Edition. The steps below separate color variants, alternate costumes, earned rewards, Deluxe bonuses and separately sold add-ons so you can identify exactly why a cosmetic is unavailable.

Quick method: equip a skin before a match
- From the main menu, enter the mode’s character-selection or loadout screen.
- Highlight the character you want to customize.
- Use the character-select controls to cycle through owned color variants. Community reports commonly describe left and right as the recolor controls.
- Open the alternate-costume choice. Community reports commonly describe pressing down to reach that group.
- Select the owned variant or costume, confirm it, and start the match.
- If the appearance is unavailable, open its requirement in Character Mastery or Collection. For Deluxe content, download the associated add-on from your platform store, then restart the game or return to character select.
These directions describe the practical flow reported by players. Button prompts can differ by platform, accessibility setup or remapped controls, so follow the on-screen prompt in your current build when it conflicts with the sequence above.
Color variants and alternate costumes are different items
Color variants
A color variant keeps the fighter’s underlying model and costume while changing its palette. It is normally selected alongside the character’s default appearance. Character-select cycling can make a recolor look like a separate costume, so read the item label and preview before confirming.

Alternate costumes
An alternate costume is a distinct outfit or visual model for that character. Story Mode and other progression routes can award alternate costumes, and Deluxe or store add-ons can provide additional outfits. A costume remains tied to the character for which it was created; unlocking one fighter’s outfit does not create a universal skin that can be applied to the rest of the roster.
What you can and cannot combine
The available selector determines whether a color and costume can be combined. Do not assume that a recolor can be layered over every alternate costume. If the menu presents separate entries, select the exact combination shown there; if it presents only one appearance slot, that build treats the item as a single cosmetic.
Detailed instructions in the character-select menu
1. Enter the correct selection screen
Start from the main menu and enter the mode in which you intend to play. Depending on the mode, the game may show a character-select screen immediately or a loadout screen before the match setup. Skin choices made in one mode may not be visible until you reach that mode’s own fighter-selection step.
2. Highlight the fighter
Move the selection cursor to the character whose appearance you want to change. The cosmetic controls act on the highlighted fighter, not on the player profile as a whole. If a second player is selecting simultaneously, verify which side of the versus screen currently has focus.
3. Browse owned recolors
Use the displayed left/right prompt to move through the color variants you own. If nothing changes, check whether the cursor is still on the character tile rather than on a team, stage or assist option. Locked entries can appear in the sequence without becoming selectable.
4. Open the alternate-costume group
Use the alternate-costume prompt shown by the game. Community guidance describes down as the usual way to reach that group, but a remapped or platform-specific layout can change the input. Once the group opens, move through the costumes and read each requirement or lock message.

5. Confirm and launch
Confirm the highlighted owned item before starting the match. A preview is not always an equip action: some screens let you inspect a cosmetic without applying it. Return to the fighter tile and verify that the chosen portrait or model reflects the appearance you selected.

If you move from a local match to Story, Arcade Ladder or Ranked, revisit the character-selection step. This confirms that the selected appearance is available in that mode and that the game saved the choice rather than merely previewing it.
How cosmetics are unlocked without buying them
Skybound Support identifies two primary unlock routes: leveling Character or Player levels and completing specific modes. Playing matches contributes to leveling. Arcade Ladders, Story Mode and Ranked Mode award cosmetics, with Story Mode specifically including alternate costumes.
Character levels and Character Mastery
Character-specific progression is the most direct place to look when a fighter’s cosmetic is locked. The official progression information says Character Mastery contains 20 rewards plus 3 Prestige Rewards. Its reward categories include skins and color variants. The requirement shown on the locked item is the authority for that cosmetic; do not substitute a general player-level requirement simply because both systems use levels.
Player Level
Player-level progression can award account-wide presentation items such as badges, titles, backgrounds, art, music, arenas and frames. It can therefore unlock useful profile and match-customization content even when it does not unlock the specific fighter skin you are seeking. Check the item’s category before grinding a level that cannot satisfy its requirement.

Arcade Ladders
Arcade Ladders are a named cosmetic route. Some rewards require completing a particular ladder or a ladder associated with a character. The reward text may also specify a season, so record the season listed before assuming the item remains available indefinitely.

Story Mode
Story Mode includes alternate costumes. Certain rewards require a difficulty setting rather than a number of ordinary matches. For example, the Mark Grayson Invincible skin requires completing Story Mode on Viltrumite difficulty during Season One or later, according to the June 30, 2026 Season One patch notes.
Ranked Mode
Ranked matches can award cosmetics tied to a count of completed matches or to a season. The Invincicast Invincible skin, listed in the June 30, 2026 Season One patch notes, requires completing 10 Ranked matches in Season One. This is a completion requirement, not a win-rate requirement as stated in that reward listing.
Where to check an unlock requirement
- Open the main menu’s Extras section.
- Choose Collection.
- Find the character, skin or color-variant entry.
- Open the locked item to read its requirement, mode and any season wording.
- For character-based rewards, also inspect Character Mastery and its reward track.
- After meeting the requirement, return to Collection to confirm the item is claimed, then revisit character select to equip it.
Collection is also the best way to distinguish an unearned item from a missing download. An item with a gameplay requirement needs progression; an item associated with a Deluxe entitlement or store purchase needs the relevant platform license and installed content.

The following examples come from the June 30, 2026 Season One patch notes. They illustrate how specific the conditions can be and why the wording in Collection matters.

These are examples, not a complete catalog. Seasonal reward lists can change, and a requirement that says “during Season One” should not be treated as a permanent route without confirmation in the current game. The October 13, 2026 Season Two patch notes announce additional premium and earnable cosmetics and document a Character Select fix affecting Titan’s Stone Skin Armor.
Deluxe Edition skins: why they may be missing
Skybound lists Conquest — Breakout and Allen the Alien — C.O.P. as Deluxe bonus skins. Owning the Deluxe Edition does not necessarily mean the bonus files are already installed. Skybound’s support guidance is to download the Add-Ons associated with the Deluxe Edition from your platform store.

Install the Deluxe add-on
- Open the store page or game-management screen for your platform.
- Find the add-ons associated with your Deluxe Edition purchase.
- Download and install the listed cosmetic add-on files.
- Fully close and restart Invincible VS.
- Return to Extras > Collection, then open character select and check the relevant fighter.
If the entitlement still does not appear after the add-on is installed and the game has been restarted, Skybound’s support instruction is to contact support. Keep your platform account, edition and purchase information available when reporting the issue.

Deluxe ownership versus a separate purchase
A Deluxe bonus is tied to the Deluxe entitlement and its add-on. A separately sold costume is tied to a store transaction. Installing the Deluxe files will not grant every costume listed in a platform storefront, and purchasing a single costume will not automatically grant the Deluxe bonus set.
Separately sold costume add-ons
The PlayStation listing includes paid costume add-ons such as Undercover and Overdressed, Double Dimensions, Battle Beast, Rex Splode — Towel, Bots & Monsters, Honest Abe, Diamond, Streetwear and GDA Prisoner, among other character skins. Availability and prices vary by region and can change, so check the store page for your own account and territory rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere.

The table’s “usually” qualification matters: always use the item’s own description for the definitive scope. A color variant and a distinct costume are both cosmetics, but they may appear in different selector groups and require different unlock routes.

The item is visible but locked
- Open the item in Extras > Collection and read the exact requirement.
- Check Character Mastery if the reward is attached to a fighter rather than your account.
- Check whether the requirement names Story Mode, an Arcade Ladder, Ranked Mode, a difficulty or a match count.
- Look for season wording. A Season One reward may be time-qualified even if the entry remains visible afterward.
The item is not in character select at all
- Confirm that you are highlighting the correct character.
- Use the alternate-costume input rather than only cycling recolors.
- Open Extras > Collection to see whether the item is owned, locked or absent.
- For Deluxe or store content, verify that the platform add-on is installed under the same account that owns the game.
The Deluxe skin is owned but still missing
- Close the game completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Check the platform store’s add-on or downloadable-content list.
- Download the Deluxe add-on associated with the edition.
- Restart the game and revisit Collection and character select.
- If it remains unavailable, contact Skybound Support as directed for missing Deluxe content.
The left/right/down inputs do nothing
Use the on-screen prompt in the current build and check your control-remapping settings. The left/right/down sequence comes from community guidance, not a complete official universal map. A patch, platform layout or custom control scheme can place the function elsewhere.

Check the current patch notes and Collection before assuming ownership was lost. The October 13, 2026 Season Two notes include a Character Select fix affecting Titan’s Stone Skin Armor, showing that selection bugs can be corrected in updates. Reinstalling a legitimately owned add-on may be appropriate only after verifying the platform license and the game’s installed content list.

How to decide which unlock route to use
Choose Character Mastery when the reward is fighter-specific
Use Character Mastery when the item is listed on that fighter’s reward track. This route is predictable because the track shows its own milestones, including the stated 20 rewards and 3 Prestige Rewards.
Choose Story Mode for story-linked alternate costumes
Story Mode is the relevant route when Collection specifies a story completion or difficulty requirement. Do not substitute ordinary matches for a difficulty-based condition such as Viltrumite difficulty.
Choose Arcade or Ranked when the item names that mode
An Arcade Ladder or Ranked requirement is mode-specific. For a match-count reward such as Invincicast, complete the number of matches stated by the item. For a ladder reward such as Rex Sloan, complete the named ladder rather than simply playing unrelated Arcade content.
Choose Deluxe or a store add-on when the item is premium
Premium cosmetics do not become available through Character Mastery unless the game explicitly lists them there. Verify whether your item is a Deluxe bonus requiring an add-on or a separately sold platform purchase.
Pre-match skin checklist
- Correct fighter highlighted.
- Color-variant group checked.
- Alternate-costume group opened.
- Item shows as owned rather than locked.
- Character Mastery or Collection requirement completed.
- Season qualification checked for time-sensitive rewards.
- Deluxe or store add-on installed when required.
- Selection confirmed before launching the match.
Following this order prevents the most common mix-up: treating a locked gameplay reward, an uninstalled Deluxe bonus and a separately purchased costume as the same kind of problem. Invincible VS uses all three systems, and each one is resolved in a different menu or service.
