First locate the specific editable control, then use the framework’s keyboard or form-input operation, submit only when appropriate, and verify the resulting page state. In Selenium, the usual method is send_keys (or sendKeys/SendKeys in other bindings). In Playwright, locator.fill() is generally the simplest choice for ordinary fields.
What “enter text” means in a scraper
A static parser can read the HTML that a server returns, but it cannot type into a live browser control. To enter text, your program must drive a browser, identify an input, textarea, or content-editable element, interact with it, and usually trigger the page’s next action.
Typing alone does not guarantee that a form was submitted, that validation passed, or that a result loaded. Modern sites may also render controls asynchronously, replace elements after JavaScript runs, require a particular event sequence, or reject automated traffic.
How to enter text with Selenium
1. Open the page and locate the intended field
Selenium supports locators such as name, ID, CSS selector, XPath, class name, and other strategies. Prefer a selector tied to meaningful structure. A selector that matches several controls can send text to the wrong field.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html")
text_box = driver.find_element(by=By.NAME, value="my-text")
finally:
driver.quit()
When a field belongs to a particular form or panel, first locate that container and search within it. This narrows the result and makes the script less sensitive to unrelated controls elsewhere on the page.
2. Send the text to an editable element
Use Selenium’s element keyboard method:
text_box.send_keys("Selenium")
Selenium’s “Interacting with web elements” documentation describes this operation as: “The element send keys command types the provided keys into an keyboard interactable element.” Typical targets are text inputs and content-editable elements. Sending keys to a non-editable element can raise an invalid element state error.
Other language bindings use the corresponding method name, such as sendKeys in JavaScript-style bindings or SendKeys in .NET examples. The principle is the same: locate the element first, then send keys to that element.
3. Replace existing text when necessary
If the field already contains a value and your task is replacement rather than appending, clear it first:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →text_box.clear()
text_box.send_keys("New value")
clear() applies to an editable, resettable text field or content-editable element. It is not a universal operation for every DOM node. If a custom widget does not respond correctly, click it, select its existing contents with keyboard commands, or use the widget’s documented interaction pattern.
4. Submit through the page’s control
Find the applicable button or submit control and click it. Selenium’s interaction guidance favors clicking the form button rather than relying on a separate submit shortcut.
submit_button = driver.find_element(by=By.CSS_SELECTOR, value="button")
submit_button.click()
5. Read and verify the result
After the click, locate a result element and inspect its text or other state. A successful click is not proof that the server accepted the value.
message = driver.find_element(by=By.ID, value="message")
print(message.text)
Complete Selenium example in Python
The following sequence follows Selenium’s documented first-script pattern: navigate, locate by name, locate the button, enter text, click, read the result, and always close the browser.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html")
text_box = driver.find_element(by=By.NAME, value="my-text")
submit_button = driver.find_element(by=By.CSS_SELECTOR, value="button")
text_box.send_keys("Selenium")
submit_button.click()
message = driver.find_element(by=By.ID, value="message")
print(message.text)
finally:
driver.quit()
The example is a documentation pattern, not a guarantee that every target site has the same names or IDs. Inspect the target page and substitute selectors that belong to its markup.
Wait for fields that load asynchronously
A field may not exist when get() returns. Use an explicit wait for a condition that represents readiness, such as presence or visibility of the field, and then interact with it.

from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 20)
text_box = wait.until(
EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.NAME, "my-text"))
)
text_box.clear()
text_box.send_keys("Selenium")
Choose the condition for the page: presence may be enough for a hidden-to-visible transition, while clickability is better when overlays or disabled states are possible. Avoid adding arbitrary sleeps everywhere; they slow runs and still fail when network timing changes.
Choosing reliable Selenium locators
- Name or ID: good when the attribute is stable and unique.
- CSS selector: useful for semantic attributes, a form scope, or a precise relationship.
- Label association: inspect the control’s associated label and use a selector that remains meaningful if available.
- Placeholder: convenient but often changed by designers or localization.
- XPath: capable of expressing relationships, but brittle absolute paths should be avoided.
Check that your locator returns exactly the intended control. If it matches several nodes, narrow it to a form, dialog, or other structural container before sending keys.
Playwright alternative: fill ordinary fields
Playwright’s documented locator.fill() operation focuses the target and triggers an input event. It supports <input>, <textarea>, and [contenteditable] targets.
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
async with async_playwright() as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page()
await page.goto("https://example.com/form")
await page.get_by_role("textbox").fill("Selenium")
await page.get_by_role("button", name="Submit").click()
await browser.close()
Prefer a meaningful label when one exists:
await page.get_by_label("Email address").fill("[email protected]")
A placeholder locator can be useful when no label is available:
await page.get_by_placeholder("Search").fill("Selenium")
Use sequential keyboard input only when the page depends on each individual keystroke—for example, a custom editor, autocomplete logic, or per-character keyboard handling. Playwright documents press_sequentially() for that case and recommends fill() for most ordinary fields.
await page.get_by_role("textbox").press_sequentially("Selenium")
Special cases that require different handling
Content-editable editors
Target the element carrying contenteditable. Selenium can send keys to an interactable content-editable element; Playwright’s fill() also supports it. Rich editors may maintain an internal model, so verify that the application’s visible value and saved value agree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Typing may open a suggestion list rather than submit a value. Enter the text, wait for the options, select the intended option, and then verify the control’s displayed value. Do not assume that pressing Enter always chooses the first result.
Masked, numeric, or date inputs
These controls may transform each character. Send a format the widget accepts and inspect the final value. Clearing and retyping can be safer than appending to a partially formatted value.
Frames
If the field is inside an iframe, switch Selenium to that frame or use Playwright’s frame locator before locating the control. A correct selector in the wrong document still fails.
Shadow DOM
Controls inside component shadow roots may need a shadow-root-aware locator. Inspect the component boundary instead of assuming a normal document query can reach through it.

Bot checks and access restrictions
A framework API documents how an element interaction behaves; it does not promise that every site permits automation. CAPTCHA challenges, login requirements, rate limits, consent gates, and security policies can prevent the workflow. Follow the site’s terms and do not attempt to bypass access controls.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| NoSuchElementException | The selector is wrong or the control has not loaded. | Inspect the live DOM, narrow the locator, and wait for the appropriate condition. |
| InvalidElementStateException | The target is disabled, read-only, hidden, or not editable. | Locate the editable control, wait until it is enabled, or follow the widget’s interaction sequence. |
| ElementClickInterceptedException | An overlay, cookie banner, or another element covers the target. | Handle the overlay if the site presents it legitimately, then wait for clickability. |
| Text appears but the app ignores it | The control is a custom widget or expects keyboard events. | Use the real textbox, send keys sequentially when needed, select the suggestion, and verify the resulting state. |
| StaleElementReferenceException | JavaScript replaced the element after you located it. | Wait for the update to finish and locate the element again. |
| Click returns no visible result | Navigation or rendering is asynchronous, or validation failed. | Wait for a URL, result element, state change, or validation message, then inspect the page. |
Reliability, performance, and data-handling considerations
- Use stable, semantic locators and keep selectors close to the page behavior they represent.
- Create a fresh browser context or clean session when cookies and prior form values could affect results.
- Wait on meaningful state changes rather than fixed delays.
- Log the URL, locator, exception, and page state needed to reproduce a failure, while redacting passwords, tokens, and personal data.
- Reuse a browser process when appropriate for throughput, but isolate sessions when authentication or state must not leak between jobs.
- Keep submitted data minimal and protect credentials. Browser automation can expose values in screenshots, logs, traces, and crash reports.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a page rather than interacting with a form, ScreenshotNeo makes one HTTP request to capture it. Its consent handling accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I enter text in a field with Selenium?
Locate the editable element, optionally call clear(), then call send_keys("your text"). Wait for the element when the page loads it asynchronously.
When should I use Playwright fill instead of sequential typing?
Use fill() for ordinary inputs, textareas, and content-editable elements. Use sequential key input only when the page relies on handling each keystroke.
Why does typing not submit my form?
Text entry and submission are separate actions. Click the applicable button or follow the control’s documented keyboard behavior, then wait for and verify the result.
