Enter a Fortnite island code from the lobby by opening Play, using the Search bar in the Play/Discover area, typing the 12-digit code in xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format, selecting the matching island, and choosing Play. On PC, you can also select Change above the Play button, open Island Code from the top navigation, enter the code, press Enter, review the island details, and click Play. Consoles support the same menus with controller navigation, and a code can also be entered at a portal console inside the Creative hub.
What a Fortnite island code is
An island code is the identifier used to open a published Fortnite Creative island. Epic describes it as a code provided in Creative that can be shared so other players can access the island. Codes use three groups of four characters, written as xxxx-xxxx-xxxx, for a total of 12 digits.

The code is tied to the island, not to a player’s account. Epic’s Creator Programs support documentation says that only public or privately published Creative islands have an associated island code. An island that has not been published does not have a code that other players can enter.

Use an island code when you already know the map’s identifier. A Support-A-Creator code and a custom key are different inputs, even though Fortnite’s search interface can accept several kinds of text. If the number you received is not 12 digits in the familiar three-part format, confirm what type of code the creator sent before trying again.

Fastest method from the Fortnite lobby: Play and Search
The Play/Discover search route is the most broadly applicable method on current Fortnite interfaces. It works with a keyboard and mouse on PC and with a controller on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
- Launch Fortnite. Wait for the lobby to load, then select Play.
- Open Search. In the Play/Discover area, choose the Search bar. Epic’s support instructions use this field for an island name, island code, creator code, or custom key.
- Enter the island code. Type all 12 digits in the
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxgrouping. Check each group before submitting. On a console, use the on-screen keyboard or controller input; on PC, type with the physical keyboard. - Choose the matching result. Check the displayed island title and creator against the information supplied by the map’s creator. This prevents launching a similarly named island or a result with a transcription error.
- Select Play. Once the title and creator match, choose Play to load the island.
This route is useful after an update because it is Epic’s general island-search path. If a particular shortcut or lobby arrangement has moved, return to Play and use the Search bar rather than relying on an older screenshot or a remembered menu position.
PC lobby route: Change, then Island Code
PC players have a second explicit route that goes directly to a code-entry screen from the lobby.
- From the Fortnite lobby, locate the Change button above Play and click it.
- On the top navigation bar, select Island Code.
- Enter the 12-digit code in
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxformat. - Press the keyboard’s Enter key to confirm the entry.
- Review the island information, including its title and creator.
- Click Play to launch the selected island.
The direct Island Code screen is convenient when you are already looking at the lobby’s game-mode selector and want to avoid browsing through other Discover categories. If the Island Code tab is not visible, use Play and the general Search bar instead.

Console instructions for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch
On PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, the procedure is the same in principle: open Play, reach the Play/Discover area, select Search, enter the code with the controller, verify the result, and choose Play. The labels are the same even though focus moves with the controller rather than a mouse.
Using the lobby search bar with a controller
- Start Fortnite and select Play in the lobby.
- Move the controller focus to the Search bar in the Play/Discover area and select it.
- Use the on-screen keyboard to enter all 12 digits, retaining the
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxgrouping. - Submit the entry using the on-screen confirmation control.
- Highlight the result whose title and creator match the code you were given.
- Select Play.
Controller layouts differ by platform and can be changed in Fortnite’s settings, so the confirm or back button may not be the same physical button for every player. Follow the on-screen control prompts rather than relying on a generic button instruction.
Using Change and Island Code on console
If your console lobby shows the same Change control above Play, you can follow the direct route used on PC: choose Change, open Island Code on the top navigation, enter the code, confirm it with the controller, inspect the island information, and select Play. When that tab is not available in your current layout, the Play/Discover Search bar remains the general route.
Entering a code from inside the Creative hub
You do not have to return to the lobby if you are already inside the Creative hub. Creative provides a portal-console method for entering an island code.

- Load Creative and press Play.
- Wait for the Creative hub to appear.
- Approach a featured or golden rift that leads to an island portal.
- Interact with the console positioned beside the portal. Epic documents that a console sits next to every portal.
- Choose the option to enter an island code, then type the 12-digit code in
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxformat. - Confirm the entry and review the island information before starting it.
The console beside another portal can accept an island code supplied by a developer. The important interaction target is the console itself, not simply the rift or the portal surface. If interacting with the rift does not open a code field, move to the adjacent console and use its code-entry option.
Which entry route should you use?

For most players beginning in the lobby, Play followed by Search is the shortest path. The portal-console route is primarily about context: it is practical when the Creative hub is already loaded. Direct Island Code entry is especially clear on PC when the tab is present.
How to check that you entered the right island
Do not launch the first result solely because its number looked familiar. Before selecting Play, compare the result with the information provided by the creator:

- Creator: Check the displayed creator name against the person or team that supplied the code.
- Code: Recount the digits and verify the three groups of four.
This check matters when a map has a common title or when a single mistyped digit leads to a different published island. If the title or creator does not match, return to the code field instead of starting the result.

Troubleshooting Fortnite island codes
The code is rejected or no island appears
- Re-enter all 12 digits and check the hyphen grouping:
xxxx-xxxx-xxxx. - Make sure you received an island code, not a Support-A-Creator code or a custom key. Those are different code types even though the Search bar can accept each type.
- Try searching for the island by its name in the Play/Discover Search bar. Name search is a fallback when a numeric entry does not surface the expected result.
- Compare the displayed title and creator with the original message. A result that looks similar is not necessarily the intended island.
The code used to work but now does not
Check whether the island is still published and available. Epic states that island codes are associated with public or privately published Creative islands; an unpublished island does not have an active island code for access. Ask the creator to confirm the island’s publication status and provide a current code if the map was changed or republished.
The search screen looks different after an update
Menu locations can change as Fortnite’s interface is updated. Start with the current general route, Play → Search, in the Play/Discover area. If you are on PC and the lobby still displays Change, look for Island Code on the top navigation. The Search bar is the safer fallback when a remembered shortcut is missing.
The Creative portal does not show a code field
Move close to the console beside the portal and interact with the console itself. In the hub, the rift is the visual entrance, but the adjacent console is the documented control for entering a developer-supplied island code. Select the code-entry option before confirming the number.
The controller will not enter the digits
First select the Search field or the portal console’s code-entry option so the on-screen keyboard receives input. Then enter the digits one group at a time and use the on-screen confirmation control. If focus has moved to another panel, back out to the code field and select it again; typing while a different menu element is focused will not populate the code.
The result is not the map you expected
Stop before selecting Play and compare the title and creator. Recount the digits in the code you entered. If either identity check fails, search again rather than assuming the creator renamed the island or that the result is an alternate version.
Code-format checklist
- There are 12 digits in total.
- The standard display groups them as four digits, a hyphen, four digits, a hyphen, and four digits.
- Use an island code for an island; do not substitute a Support-A-Creator code or custom key.
- A code corresponds to a public or privately published Creative island.
- Verify the island title and creator before choosing Play.
What happens after you select Play
After the correct result is selected and Play is confirmed, Fortnite loads the chosen Creative island. The entry procedure itself is software-only: a PC uses keyboard and mouse controls, while a console uses its controller. A special controller adapter, keyboard, headset, book, or other accessory is not required to enter the code.
If you are helping another player, send the complete code in its three four-digit groups and include the island title and creator. Those identity details give the recipient a way to detect a mistyped digit or a similarly named result before launching it.
