How to Ensure Your Company Website Is Driving the Most Sales

To find out whether your company website is driving sales, define the outcome that matters, make sure it is measured, trace how visitors reach it, and fix the biggest points of friction. A rise in traffic alone does not show that the site is producing purchases or qualified leads.

Define what a sale means for your business

Choose the primary outcome before judging the website. Depending on the business, that could be a completed online purchase, a qualified lead, a booked consultation, or another action that creates business value. Digital.gov recommends setting performance goals and key performance indicators before using analytics to improve a site: Digital.gov analytics guidance.

Then map the steps that lead to that outcome. For an online store, useful diagnostic events might include a product-page visit, add to cart, checkout start, and purchase. For a service company, they might include a landing-page visit, form start, completed form, and a lead qualification step. Track only what your analytics setup can reliably record, and distinguish the final outcome from the steps that precede it.

Check that your measurement works

Before redesigning pages or changing calls to action, confirm that the desired conversion is being recorded and that you can examine important stages of the visitor journey. Google describes Search Console as a way to review organic search queries and clicks, while analytics tools help assess what happens after a visitor arrives and how conversions occur: Google Analytics guidance.

  • Search Console: Use it to understand how people find the site through Google organic search, including the queries and clicks reported for your property.
  • Analytics: Use it to measure on-site behavior and conversions, provided the relevant events and reporting are configured correctly.

These tools answer different questions; neither substitutes for a properly defined business outcome. Product interfaces and measurement features can change, so check the current documentation for setup details rather than assuming an event is tracked because a report exists.

Trace the path and find where visitors get stuck

Review the pages closest to the outcome: key landing pages, product or service pages, forms, and checkout steps. Look for points where visitors stop progressing, and inspect those pages on both mobile and desktop. A useful review asks whether the offer is clear, the next action is easy to find, navigation supports the task, and forms or checkout steps are understandable.

  • Can a new visitor tell what the company offers and who it is for?
  • Is the next action clear, and does it lead to the expected page or step?
  • Do forms explain required information and provide useful labels and instructions?
  • Do mobile layouts make important information and controls usable without awkward scrolling or accidental taps?
  • Do errors, unexpected page shifts, or slow responses interrupt the task?

Do not assume a universal button color, layout, or conversion rate will work for every company. The relevant question is whether a specific change helps your own visitors complete the defined outcome.

Assess loading, responsiveness, and visual stability

Google’s Core Web Vitals describe three aspects of real-world page experience: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) concerns loading, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) concerns responsiveness, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) concerns visual stability. Google’s stated good-experience targets are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP below 200 milliseconds, and CLS below 0.1. These are diagnostic thresholds, not sales-lift estimates or guarantees of search rankings: Google’s Core Web Vitals documentation.

Use the Search Console Core Web Vitals report to review eligible groups of URLs using real-user field data. It groups similar URLs and may omit groups without enough data, so it is not a complete page-by-page inventory. For a specific URL that needs diagnosis, use a live page test as a complement to field reporting.

A strong score is not a sales result. Google says good Core Web Vitals reports or third-party scores do not guarantee top search rankings, because page experience involves more than those metrics: Google’s page-experience guidance. Treat the measures as clues about usability and technical friction, then verify whether a change affects the business outcome you defined.

Check accessibility and trust

Customers need to be able to use the site to access its goods and services. Review text contrast, visible labels, form instructions, keyboard use, and whether meaning depends on color alone. The U.S. Department of Justice’s guidance for businesses open to the public explains that the ADA applies to goods and services offered online and gives examples of accessibility barriers: DOJ guidance on web accessibility and the ADA. This general guidance is not a legal assessment of a particular business or jurisdiction.

Trust signals should be real and accurately presented. The FTC says reviews should reflect genuine customer feedback, and commercial relationships such as affiliate links should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Prioritize fixes and evaluate the result

Do not tackle every possible improvement at once. Prioritize issues by their likely effect on the defined outcome, how many important pages or visitors they affect, and the effort required to resolve them. A broken form on a high-value landing page may deserve attention before a minor issue on a rarely visited page.

  1. Write down the baseline: Record the conversion measure and the period you will use to compare results.
  2. Choose a focused change: Address one clear source of friction where possible, rather than altering many parts of the journey simultaneously.
  3. Check implementation: Confirm that the page works across relevant devices and that conversion measurement still records the intended event.
  4. Compare like with like: Review the same outcome and comparable time periods, taking account of meaningful changes in traffic or campaigns.
  5. Keep, revise, or undo: Retain a change only if the evidence supports it; if the result is unclear, investigate measurement and context before claiming success.

For sites with enough measurable activity, a controlled experiment can help compare alternatives. Testing and behavior-analysis tools vary in capabilities—such as A/B testing, heatmaps, recordings, form analysis, and funnel analysis—and in implementation burden, traffic needs, integrations, privacy requirements, and price. Examples of providers include Convert and Zoho PageSense; a landing-page builder such as Unbounce may fit a different need. Check current features and terms directly, and choose based on the capability your team needs, not a promise that a particular product will increase sales.

If a company uses experimentation or analytics software, account for its privacy requirements and the skills needed to implement and interpret it. A test cannot compensate for an unclear success measure or broken conversion tracking.
