If the channel owner is under 16, YouTube does not let them start a livestream on their own channel. A supervised child account also has channel creation and livestreaming turned off. An under-16 child may participate only in a stream hosted from an adult-owned account, with the adult visibly present and actively co-creating. For a channel owner aged 16 or older, livestreaming may be available after the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
Can a child-owned YouTube channel go live?
YouTube’s current guidance sets 16 as the minimum age for livestreaming. That means an under-16 child cannot enable live streaming on their own channel; there is no setting or equipment that overrides the rule. A stream that does not meet the minimum-age requirement may be taken down, and the account may temporarily lose livestream access. YouTube also says streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat disabled and other feature access restricted. These rules are separate from the audience setting on a video or channel. Marking content “made for kids” does not change the creator’s age eligibility.
What an under-16 child can do: participate in an adult-hosted stream
If a family wants an under-16 child to appear live, YouTube’s stated route is for an adult-owned account to host the stream. The adult must be visibly present and participate in the stream as much as the child; having a parent nearby, or granting access by itself, does not make the child eligible to host independently.

- Use an adult-owned account and channel. The adult—not the child—hosts the stream.
- Have the adult start the stream. YouTube says an adult can be granted editor, manager, or owner channel access to start a stream through Live Control Room. That access does not replace the adult’s obligation to be visibly present and actively co-create.
- Agree on the stream and safety plan beforehand. Decide what will be shown, who will moderate, and how the child can stop if they feel uncomfortable.
Do not change a child’s birth date, switch to another channel to bypass an active restriction, or treat a supervised account as a workaround. YouTube warns that using another channel to evade a livestream restriction is prohibited circumvention and may lead to termination.
How an eligible creator aged 16 or older enables livestreaming
For a creator who is at least 16, livestreaming is available only if the channel meets YouTube’s account requirements. Verify the channel and confirm it has had no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days before setting up a stream. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and certain game-console methods; a webcam is only needed for the computer webcam method.

Start a webcam stream on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube using the eligible channel.
- Select Create → Go Live → Webcam.
- Enter the stream title and description, and choose its privacy setting.
- Check that YouTube has selected the intended camera and microphone.
- Select Go Live when ready. Follow the current on-screen controls if the interface has changed.
YouTube’s webcam instructions say the privacy default for creators aged 13–17 is private. The creator can choose public, private, or unlisted, but a parent or trusted adult should discuss who can see the stream before its visibility is changed. See YouTube’s webcam-stream setup steps.
Supervised teens are a separate case
YouTube distinguishes supervised teen accounts from supervised child accounts. A supervised teen needs a Google Account and their own channel, but that does not change the independent minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. A teen who is under 16 still cannot start a stream on their own channel.

Protect a child who appears in a permitted stream
YouTube’s minor-safety guidance recommends planning privacy and moderation with a parent or trusted adult. Before going live, review the camera view, stream visibility, and embed settings together.
- Do not reveal a full name, age, home location, school, or phone number.
- Check the background and anything shown on screen for address, street, or other location clues.
- Make sure a trusted adult is nearby or knows who the child is streaming with and for how long.
- Use moderation tools; consider having a trusted adult moderate chat.
- If someone makes the child uncomfortable, stop the stream and tell a trusted adult.
What “made for kids” changes—and what it does not
“Made for kids” is an audience designation, not an age-eligibility setting. It does not make an under-16 creator eligible to livestream. For livestreams designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled for livestreams and Premieres, although contextual ads may appear. Choose the audience designation that accurately reflects the content and applicable YouTube rules; do not change it just to recover features.

Common problems and what to check
- “Go Live” is unavailable on a child’s channel: If the channel owner is under 16, this is an age restriction, not a missing setting. Use the adult-host route only if the adult is visibly present and co-creating.
- A supervised child account cannot create a channel: YouTube turns off channel creation and livestreaming for supervised child accounts. Changing the content-viewing setting does not enable either feature.
- An eligible 16-or-older creator cannot start a stream: Check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. Do not try another channel to evade an active restriction.
- A teen’s webcam stream starts as private: YouTube says private is the default for webcam streams for creators aged 13–17. Review visibility with a parent or trusted adult before changing it.
- Chat or other features are missing: Check whether the content is designated made for kids; that designation disables several chat, comment, notification, and monetization features listed above.
