How to Enable XMP or DOCP to Get Your DDR4 RAM’s Rated Speed

If your DDR4 kit is advertised at a higher speed than your computer currently reports, the memory profile may simply be disabled. Restart the computer, enter its BIOS/UEFI setup, enable the available XMP profile—or DOCP on some ASUS AMD boards—save, and reboot. Then verify the reported memory speed in firmware or the operating system. The exact menu names, available profile and stable result depend on the memory kit, motherboard BIOS and processor.

XMP and DOCP do not replace the memory’s hardware. They load preset speed, timing and voltage values stored on the module. Intel classifies running compatible memory with an XMP profile as memory overclocking, so compatibility and stability checks matter even when the profile is supplied by the memory manufacturer.

Why DDR4 may run below the number on its label

A DDR4 kit can contain a tested performance profile without having that profile enabled at the factory-default BIOS setting. The computer may therefore boot at a conservative speed that is compatible with a broad range of processors and motherboards, while the packaging advertises a faster tested configuration.

The advertised figure is normally associated with a profile containing three linked settings: memory speed, timing and voltage. Enabling the profile asks the motherboard to apply that combination rather than relying only on automatic defaults. The profile is stored on the memory module; it is not a software performance mode that can be enabled from Windows after startup.

There is no single guaranteed outcome for every DDR4 system. A profile that works on one board may fail on another because the memory controller in the processor, the motherboard firmware, the board’s electrical layout and the particular memory modules all affect operation. Treat the kit rating as a tested target, not a promise that every compatible-looking combination will run at that setting.

XMP and DOCP: what the labels mean

XMP on Intel and other supported systems

Intel Extreme Memory Profile, usually shown as XMP, is a set of tested values written by the memory manufacturer for compatible DDR4 or DDR5 modules. Intel describes loading an XMP profile through BIOS or a tuning application and characterizes operation with compatible XMP memory as overclocking. The profile combines speed, timing and voltage so you do not have to enter each value manually.

A motherboard may expose more than one stored profile or more than one interpretation of a profile. Read the choices presented by your firmware and use the profile that corresponds to the kit’s advertised specification unless your motherboard manual recommends a different option. Do not assume that a profile with a similar name has identical timings or voltage.

DOCP on some ASUS AMD boards

DOCP means Direct Over Clock Profile. ASUS uses that label in its example for applying an XMP memory profile on supported AMD-platform boards. In that situation, the memory can still contain an XMP profile even though the BIOS control is called DOCP.

DOCP is not a universal name for every AMD motherboard. Other vendors and BIOS versions may use different labels, and some AMD boards expose their own memory-profile terminology. Follow the manual for the exact board rather than searching for a particular word that may not exist in its firmware.

Check these items before changing BIOS settings

A few checks reduce the chance of a failed boot and make it easier to identify the cause if the profile does not work.

  • Identify the motherboard model and BIOS version. Menu locations and profile names can change between models and firmware releases.
  • Confirm the memory type. This procedure is for a DDR4 kit with a stored profile. Do not select a DDR4 profile for a different memory generation.
  • Read the kit label or documentation. Note the rated speed and, if listed, the profile’s timing and voltage. You will use these values when checking the result.
  • Check the motherboard’s memory support list (QVL). A kit appearing on the board vendor’s qualified-vendor list is useful compatibility evidence, although absence from a QVL is not proof that a kit cannot work.
  • Check processor and motherboard limits. The maximum practical DRAM frequency depends on the memory, motherboard and CPU together. A profile can be present and still be unsuitable for a particular combination.
  • Keep a recovery path available. Know where the board’s clear-CMOS pins, reset button or documented BIOS-recovery procedure is located before you save a new memory setting.

Save any important BIOS customizations or record them first. A failed memory setting can return the firmware to defaults, which may also remove unrelated settings such as boot order, fan curves or virtualization options.

Enable XMP or DOCP in the BIOS/UEFI

The following sequence is a general flow. It is not a universal menu map; use your motherboard manual when a label or location differs.

  1. Restart and enter BIOS/UEFI. Reboot the computer and use the key or procedure documented for the motherboard or system. Common keys vary by manufacturer, so use the on-screen prompt or manual rather than guessing.
  2. Switch to the full configuration view if necessary. Some firmware opens in a simplified or EZ screen. On ASUS’s documented example, selecting Advanced Mode exposes the tuning controls.
  3. Open the memory or overclocking section. In the ASUS example, the path is Advanced Mode → Ai Tweaker.
  4. Find the profile selector. ASUS places it under Ai Overclock Tuner. Other boards may put it under an overclocking, memory, tweaker or advanced-frequency menu.
  5. Select the available profile. The ASUS example uses XMP I for supported XMP memory on an Intel board and DOCP for XMP memory on an AMD board. Your firmware may show one profile, several profiles or a differently named option.
  6. Review the resulting values. Check that the proposed memory speed resembles the kit’s rating and that timing and voltage values are populated. Do not manually raise voltage or timing values merely because the profile did not appear.
  7. Save and restart. Use the firmware’s Save and Exit command, confirm the changes and let the system reboot. Do not interrupt power during memory training or the restart cycle.
  8. Verify after startup. Return to BIOS/UEFI or open the operating system’s memory information and compare the reported speed with the selected profile.

What to do when your board uses different labels

On a non-ASUS board, look for the same function rather than an exact phrase. The control may be called XMP, a memory profile, an overclocking profile or a vendor-specific equivalent. The relevant choice is the one that reads the profile stored on the DIMM and applies its speed, timing and voltage values.

Intel directs users to the motherboard vendor or system manufacturer for system-specific controls. This is important on prebuilt computers, where the firmware may hide memory-overclocking options even when the installed modules contain an XMP profile.

How to confirm that the rated setting took effect

Check in BIOS/UEFI

Re-enter firmware and look for the DRAM frequency or memory-status readout. ASUS documents checking DRAM frequency after applying the setting. Compare the displayed value with the profile you selected, taking note of the label used by that firmware.

Check in the operating system

In Windows, open Task Manager and go to Performance → Memory, the location identified in MSI’s guidance. Other operating systems and utilities may place the value elsewhere or use a different label. A firmware screen may report a base memory frequency while an operating-system utility presents a data-rate-style value, so compare the same type of measurement rather than assuming that differently named numbers are contradictory.

Confirm more than a screenshot

A displayed speed proves that the setting was accepted and reported; it does not by itself prove long-term stability. If the computer crashes, freezes, restarts unexpectedly or produces memory errors after the change, treat the profile as unstable on that system even if the BIOS still shows the target value.

Compatibility factors that determine whether XMP or DOCP works

Factor What to check Why it matters
Memory module Whether the DIMM contains an XMP profile and which speed, timing and voltage it specifies The BIOS cannot select a profile that is not stored on the module.
Motherboard QVL entries, supported memory generation, firmware options and maximum documented DRAM frequency The board must expose the profile and electrically support the requested setting.
Processor Integrated memory-controller support and the processor’s documented memory limits The CPU’s memory controller participates in achieving and maintaining the target speed.
Firmware version Current board-specific BIOS guidance and any notes about memory compatibility Menu names, training behavior and compatibility can change between BIOS versions.
System stability Successful boot plus reliable operation after the profile is enabled A saved value is not a useful result if the system cannot operate reliably.

ASUS recommends using memory listed on the board’s QVL and notes that maximum DRAM frequency is related to the DRAM, motherboard and CPU specifications. MSI likewise notes that an XMP option appears when the module provides an XMP profile and warns that missing processor or motherboard support can cause memory overclocking to fail.

Troubleshooting when the profile is missing or fails

The XMP or DOCP option is not shown

  • Confirm that the installed kit actually contains an XMP profile. A kit can operate at standard defaults without offering an overclocking profile.
  • Check that you are in the advanced firmware view; simplified modes may hide tuning controls.
  • Verify that the motherboard firmware supports the memory generation and profile function.
  • Check whether an OEM or prebuilt-system BIOS has disabled memory overclocking controls.
  • Read the board manual for its equivalent label instead of assuming it must say XMP or DOCP.

The system reboots repeatedly or does not display an image

Repeated restarts usually mean the board could not train the selected memory settings. Turn the system off only according to the board’s instructions, then use its documented clear-CMOS or BIOS-recovery procedure. Some boards recover automatically after several training attempts; others require a reset. Do not keep forcing restarts without consulting the exact board procedure.

After recovery, the firmware may return to defaults. Boot with the profile disabled, confirm that the system is stable, then reassess the QVL, processor support and target speed. If the board offers more than one profile, a less aggressive stored option may be worth testing only when the manual identifies it as supported.

The computer boots but becomes unstable

Crashes, application errors, freezes or unexpected restarts after enabling the profile indicate that the selected combination is not stable in the current system. Return to BIOS, disable the profile or restore defaults, save and retest. Then check the board’s compatibility list and the processor and memory specifications before trying again.

Do not assume that increasing voltage manually will solve the problem. The documented material does not establish one universally safe voltage or one guaranteed stable speed for every DDR4 combination. Use only settings supported by the motherboard and memory vendors, and prefer a known-supported profile over improvised values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The displayed speed did not change

  • Confirm that you saved the setting rather than exiting without saving.
  • Check the profile selector again after reboot; some firmware reverts to automatic mode when training fails.
  • Make sure you are reading the intended memory field. DRAM frequency, effective data rate and general memory labels may be presented differently by firmware and operating-system tools.
  • Verify that the selected profile’s target actually differs from the default value.

You need to reset everything

Use the motherboard’s documented CMOS-reset or load-defaults procedure. The exact process varies by board and may involve a firmware menu, a rear-panel button, a two-pin header or removing power before using a jumper. Follow the board manual precisely, then reapply only the settings you can identify and verify.

Do you need to buy a different DDR4 kit?

No. If your current kit has a suitable profile and your motherboard and processor support it, enabling XMP or DOCP is normally a BIOS configuration change. Buying memory is relevant only when the installed modules lack a profile, are incompatible with the board or processor, or cannot operate stably at the desired setting.

If replacement becomes necessary, choose a DDR4 kit whose specifications match the motherboard’s supported memory type and whose exact part number appears on the board’s QVL when possible. There is no need to purchase a new kit merely because the advertised speed is not active before the profile is enabled.

How to choose between the available settings

When firmware presents several choices, use these decision points in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Profile type: select the label supported by your platform and board, such as XMP or the board’s DOCP-style equivalent.
  2. Compatibility evidence: prefer a kit listed on the motherboard QVL and a target that fits the processor and board specifications.
  3. Target values: verify that the speed, timing and voltage shown by firmware correspond to the kit documentation.
  4. Observed behavior: keep the setting only if the computer boots consistently and remains stable during normal use.

These criteria are more useful than choosing a profile solely because it has the largest number. The highest stored setting is not automatically the best setting for a particular CPU and motherboard combination.

What enabling the profile can and cannot tell you

Enabling XMP or DOCP tells the board to apply a manufacturer-tested combination of memory parameters. It can correct the common situation in which a high-rated kit is operating at a lower default setting. It does not guarantee a universal performance increase, because the practical benefit depends on the applications, processor and rest of the system. The available documentation does not establish one benchmark gain that applies to every DDR4 computer.

Likewise, a successful boot is only the first verification step. Check the reported setting, observe the computer for instability and keep the board’s recovery instructions available. If the profile cannot run reliably, defaults or a lower supported setting are preferable to repeated crashes or data corruption.

Bottom line

Enter BIOS/UEFI, locate the memory-profile control, select XMP—or DOCP where the board uses that ASUS label for an XMP module—save and restart. Verify the memory reading afterward, and judge success by both the reported speed and reliable operation. If the option is absent or unstable, investigate the module’s profile, the motherboard QVL, processor support and the exact BIOS recovery procedure instead of forcing manual values.
