How to Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts on iPhone and Android

To enable emergency alerts, use your phone’s built-in notification settings—no app or mailing-list signup is required. On iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts. On Android, go to Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts, although the exact wording and location can differ by manufacturer and Android version. In the United States, a compatible, powered-on phone must also be within range of an active cell tower and connected to a participating wireless provider for a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) to arrive.

The labels and alert categories shown on your phone depend on your country or region, carrier, device model and operating-system version. The instructions below reflect official platform guidance available on October 13, 2026.

iPhone and Android settings at a glance

Phone Main settings path Controls you may see Important limitation
iPhone Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts Regional government-alert categories; on supported iPhones, Local Awareness and Always Play Sound under Emergency Alerts Categories vary by region, model and carrier. Government Alerts are generally on by default, and some cannot be disabled in some locations.
Android Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts Alert types, sound and vibration, and a history of past alerts, depending on the device Manufacturers and Android versions can use different labels or menu hierarchies. Search Settings for “emergency alerts” if the path is absent.
Android Crisis alerts Settings > Safety & emergency > Crisis alerts A separate Google crisis-notification feature Crisis alerts are not the Wireless Emergency Alerts switch and are documented separately by Google.

How do I turn on emergency alerts on my iPhone?

Open the Government Alerts controls

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the notification page and find Government Alerts.
  4. Turn on each alert type you want to receive. The categories displayed are the ones offered for your region, carrier and iPhone.

In Apple’s U.S. example, the list can include National Alerts, AMBER Alerts, Public Safety Alerts and Emergency Alerts. Do not assume that this exact list appears outside the United States or on every iPhone. Apple says categories and availability differ by country or region, and some government alerts may not be switchable.

Adjust Emergency Alerts when those options are available

On supported iPhones, tap Emergency Alerts in the Government Alerts area to reveal additional controls. Local Awareness can improve the relevance of Emergency Alerts by using more precise location awareness where that option is provided. Always Play Sound makes Emergency Alerts play their alert sound even when the iPhone is in Silent mode. The names and availability of these controls depend on the iPhone, iOS version, region and carrier.

Understand the default state and carrier requirement

Apple says Government Alerts are on by default on supported iPhones. That default does not mean every possible category is present everywhere, nor does it guarantee that a particular alert will arrive. The iPhone must use a SIM or eSIM from a supported network provider for Apple’s government-alert service. If you recently changed carriers, moved an eSIM to another phone or are using a device from another market, check whether your provider and model support the local alert system.

Check the phone after an iOS update or SIM change

Menu labels can change with iOS updates, and a carrier change can alter which categories appear. After a major update or SIM/eSIM change, return to Settings > Notifications and confirm that Government Alerts is still present and configured as you expect. If it is missing, search Settings for “government alerts” and ask the carrier whether the device is provisioned for local emergency alerts.

Where are Wireless Emergency Alerts on Android?

Use Google’s general Android route

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Select Wireless emergency alerts.
  4. Choose the alert types and sound or vibration options you want enabled.

Google’s general help page also provides access to past alerts on devices that expose that history. The exact switches may be grouped differently: a manufacturer can place emergency-alert settings under a safety, security or advanced-notification submenu, or use a slightly different label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search Settings when the menu is different

If you do not see Wireless emergency alerts under Notifications, use the Settings search field and enter emergency alerts, wireless alerts or government alerts. Open the result that leads to the phone’s built-in alert controls rather than a third-party app. If search returns nothing, consult the help documentation for the phone maker and confirm that the handset and carrier support the alert system used in your country.

Review every option instead of relying on one master switch

Some Android phones present separate switches for different threat levels or message classes. Others combine them under a smaller number of headings. Read the description beside each switch and enable the categories relevant to your circumstances. Where available, review sound, vibration and alert-history controls so you know how the handset will behave when an alert arrives. A setting for test messages is optional; it is not required for ordinary emergency-alert reception.

Android Crisis alerts are separate from Wireless Emergency Alerts

Android includes another feature called Crisis alerts. Google documents it at Settings > Safety & emergency > Crisis alerts and says Crisis alerts are on by default. This is a separate Google alert mechanism, not the WEA control under Notifications. Turning Crisis alerts on or off does not substitute for reviewing Wireless emergency alerts, and changing the WEA options does not configure Crisis alerts.

If you want both kinds of notification, check both locations. Availability can depend on country, account, device and software version, so the presence of one feature does not prove that the other is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do test-alert settings need to be enabled?

No. Test alerts are optional and are not a prerequisite for receiving real emergency alerts. FEMA’s WEA testing guidance states that enabling or disabling test messages does not affect delivery of actual emergency alerts.

Where a test control exists, it may appear among Wireless emergency alerts on Android. Apple’s U.S. instructions for test alerts can differ by iOS version, and the control may not be shown in every region. Do not change Developer options merely to receive normal alerts; that is unnecessary. Enable a test category only if you deliberately want to participate in an authorized test and understand that test availability and labels vary by handset and operating system.

Why didn’t I get an emergency alert?

Enabling a setting is necessary for user-controlled categories, but it cannot guarantee delivery. For U.S. WEA, FEMA identifies several conditions that must be satisfied at the same time.

The phone was off, out of power or in Airplane Mode

The handset must be switched on and able to connect to the cellular network. A powered-off phone cannot receive a broadcast while it is off. Airplane Mode can disable the cellular connection required for the alert, so turn it off when you need normal mobile-network service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone was outside the active broadcast area

WEA uses geographically targeted cell broadcast. Compatible phones located in the designated area can receive the message; phones outside that area generally will not. The system is not sent to a stored list of individual phone numbers, so moving into or out of the affected area changes whether the broadcast reaches the device.

There was no usable cell-tower signal

FEMA says the phone must be within range of an active cell tower. A weak or unavailable cellular connection, a temporary tower outage or heavy local disruption can prevent reception even when the alert switch is enabled. Moving to a location with a cellular signal may help with future broadcasts, but it cannot recreate an alert that has already expired.

The carrier or handset was not participating

For U.S. WEA, the phone must be compatible with WEA and connected to a participating wireless provider. On iPhone, Apple additionally requires a supported carrier SIM or eSIM. An imported model, an older handset, an unsupported prepaid arrangement or a recently changed eSIM can affect eligibility. Contact the carrier with the exact model number and SIM status if the alert controls are missing or alerts never arrive.

The category was disabled or not offered in your region

Some alert categories are user-selectable, while others may be mandatory or unavailable depending on local rules. Compare the category shown on your phone with the type of message expected in your area. A missing category is not necessarily a fault: Apple and Google both explain that regional availability and labels differ.

You expected a WEA message from a mailing list or app

WEA is a carrier-delivered geographic broadcast, not a subscription service. You do not need to register a phone number, install an app or join a mailing list to receive it. Apps and local notification services can supplement official alerts, but they are not required for WEA itself.

How Wireless Emergency Alerts are delivered

In the United States, WEA messages are broadcast through participating wireless networks to compatible phones in a defined geographic area. The message is not addressed to a personal contact list. This design allows authorities to target phones physically present in the affected zone, including visitors whose numbers are registered elsewhere.

The broadcast model also explains several common surprises: two phones in the same household can behave differently if one is incompatible or disconnected from the participating network; a phone can receive an alert while traveling even if its home address is elsewhere; and a person outside the target area may not receive the message despite having every switch enabled.

Regional, carrier and version differences

Country and region

Apple explicitly states that Government Alert categories vary by country or region. The U.S. examples—such as AMBER, Public Safety and National Alerts—should not be treated as a universal list. Other countries use different authorities, names and broadcast standards. Before troubleshooting, identify which emergency-alert system your local authority and carrier support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manufacturer and Android version

Google’s Wireless emergency alerts path is general guidance, not a promise that every Android manufacturer uses the same hierarchy. A phone running a customized Android interface may put the controls under Safety, Security, Notifications or Advanced settings. Settings search is usually faster than opening unrelated notification categories one by one.

Carrier and SIM/eSIM

Carrier participation and SIM or eSIM provisioning can determine whether the controls appear and whether a broadcast is delivered. If the menu disappeared after changing providers, ask the carrier whether emergency-alert service is supported for your exact device and plan. Keep the device software current, but remember that an update cannot create carrier support where none exists.

A practical verification checklist

Use this checklist after setting up a new phone, changing carriers or traveling to another country:

  • Confirm the phone is powered on and not in Airplane Mode.
  • On iPhone, inspect Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts.
  • On Android, inspect Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts, or search Settings for “emergency alerts.”
  • On Android, separately review Settings > Safety & emergency > Crisis alerts if you want Google’s crisis-notification feature.
  • Enable the categories offered for your area and decide how you want sound and vibration handled.
  • On supported iPhones, decide whether Local Awareness and Always Play Sound fit your needs.
  • Verify that the carrier participates in the local alert system and that the SIM or eSIM is active.
  • Do not disable ordinary alerts merely because test alerts are unavailable; tests are optional.

What to do when the setting is missing

  1. Use the Settings search field with “emergency alerts,” “wireless emergency alerts” and “government alerts.”
  2. Check whether the phone is running a manufacturer-customized Android interface or a region-specific iOS build.
  3. Install available operating-system updates, then search again; menu placement can change after updates.
  4. Confirm that a physical SIM or eSIM from the current carrier is active.
  5. Ask the carrier whether the exact model is compatible with the local emergency-broadcast system.
  6. If the carrier confirms support but the control remains absent, contact the device maker and provide the model, operating-system version and country of use.

How the two platforms differ in practice

The basic purpose is the same, but the controls are organized differently. iPhone places Government Alerts at the bottom of the main Notifications page and may expose Local Awareness and Always Play Sound inside Emergency Alerts. Android’s general route places Wireless emergency alerts under Notifications and may offer alert history, sound and vibration controls. Android also has the separate Crisis alerts page under Safety & emergency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That difference matters when helping another person. Do not tell an Android user to look for Apple’s Government Alerts heading, and do not assume an iPhone will have Android’s alert-history screen. Start with the operating system, then account for the manufacturer interface, country and carrier.

Sound, silence and alert behavior

Review sound and vibration choices rather than assuming that a silent phone will behave like an ordinary notification. On supported iPhones, Always Play Sound is specifically designed to play the Emergency Alert sound even when Silent mode is enabled. Android phones may expose sound and vibration settings within Wireless emergency alerts, but the labels and available controls differ.

If a life-safety alert is important to you, consider how you normally use Silent mode, Do Not Disturb and vibration. The emergency-alert page—not the general ringtone page—is the right place to check the controls documented for your device. Never infer from a missing sound option that the phone is incompatible; the manufacturer may simply combine that behavior with a broader alert category.

When traveling or changing networks

Because WEA is geographically targeted, the relevant factor is where a compatible phone is connected when an alert is broadcast, not the address associated with the phone number. A traveler can receive a local broadcast while visiting an affected area. Conversely, a phone outside the defined area may not receive the message even when all categories are enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

International travel adds another variable: Apple says Government Alert categories and availability vary by country or region, and Android menus can differ by market and carrier. Before relying on a familiar U.S. category abroad, check the local authority’s instructions and the roaming or local-SIM support offered by the carrier. A menu that is present at home may show different categories after a SIM or eSIM change.

Before you rely on an alert

Emergency alerts are one channel in an incident-response system, not a guarantee that every person will receive every message. Keep the phone charged, leave cellular service available when practical and learn the warning channels used by your local emergency-management authority. If you are in a region where alert names differ, follow the local authority’s explanation of which categories correspond to life-safety warnings.

The key distinction is simple: configure the built-in Government Alerts or Wireless emergency alerts control for your operating system, keep the handset compatible and connected, and treat Android Crisis alerts and optional test messages as separate features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are Wireless Emergency Alerts on Android?

The general Google path is Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. If that menu is absent, search Settings for “emergency alerts” or check the phone maker’s instructions.

Are Android Crisis alerts the same as Wireless Emergency Alerts?

No. Crisis alerts are a separate Google feature under Settings > Safety & emergency > Crisis alerts. Review both locations if you want both services.

Do I need to enable test alerts to receive real warnings?

No. Test alerts are optional. Enabling or disabling them does not affect delivery of ordinary emergency alerts.

Why didn’t I get an emergency alert even though it was enabled?

For U.S. WEA, the phone must be compatible, powered on, out of Airplane Mode, within range of an active cell tower and connected to a participating provider. The phone must also be inside the broadcast area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an app or mailing-list signup for WEA?

No. WEA is a carrier-delivered geographic broadcast to compatible phones in the target area. An app or signup is not required.

Why is the emergency-alert setting missing?

Menu placement varies by Android manufacturer, iOS version, region and carrier. Search Settings, install available updates, confirm the SIM or eSIM is active, and ask the carrier whether the exact model supports local alerts.

Will my phone receive an alert while traveling?

A compatible phone can receive a geographically targeted broadcast while connected in the affected area, even if its phone number or home address is elsewhere. Availability still depends on the local network and alert system.

The Bottom Line

Turn on the built-in control for your operating system: iPhone users should check Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts; Android users should check Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. Review Android Crisis alerts separately, treat test messages as optional, and remember that delivery also depends on a compatible, powered-on phone, an active cellular connection, the broadcast area and carrier participation.
