Enable WhatsApp’s extra sign-in protection from Settings > Account > Two-step verification. Tap Enable, create the credential WhatsApp requests, and add a recovery email when offered. Two-step verification is separate from the one-time registration code sent by SMS or phone call: the code proves control of your number during registration, while the second credential helps stop someone who has obtained that code from taking over your account.
For stronger protection, use the official WhatsApp app, keep your recovery email secure, review linked devices, and consider a passkey and app lock as separate layers.

What WhatsApp two-step verification protects
WhatsApp describes two-step verification as an optional security feature that uses two forms of authentication, such as SMS plus a password. Meta says it helps prevent an account takeover even if someone gets your one-time passcode. In practical terms, a person attempting to register your number on another device needs more than the SMS or call code: they also need the WhatsApp two-step credential.
The credential is not the same as the registration code. WhatsApp sends a one-time code by SMS or voice call when a number is being registered. You must never give that code to another person. Two-step verification adds a separate account-protection secret that you create and keep private.

The six-digit PIN is being replaced by a password
WhatsApp’s current Help Center guidance says the old six-digit PIN is being upgraded to a full password. Depending on the version and rollout reaching your account, the setup prompt may ask for a longer alphanumeric password and may permit special characters. Follow the credential format shown in your app rather than assuming that only six digits are accepted.
Choose a credential that you can retrieve safely but that another person cannot guess. Do not reuse it for email, banking, social networks, or any other service. A reused secret lets a breach elsewhere undermine the protection you just enabled.
How to enable two-step verification
- Open WhatsApp settings. On your phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification.
- Start setup. Tap Enable. WhatsApp will display the credential requirements that apply to your account.
- Create the credential. Enter a private PIN or password as requested, then enter it again to confirm. Use a value you do not use anywhere else. Store it in a secure password manager or another private method you trust; do not save it in a public note or send it in a chat.
- Add a recovery email. When WhatsApp offers an email address, enter one that you control and can access. Confirm it if WhatsApp asks for verification. The email creates a recovery route if you forget the two-step credential and can help you recover access without an SMS or phone connection.
- Finish and check the status. Return to Settings > Account > Two-step verification. The screen should offer management options rather than asking you to enable the feature again.
- Record what you changed. Note where the credential is stored and which email address is attached. This prevents a future lockout caused by forgetting both the secret and the recovery route.
Never disclose the WhatsApp registration code, your two-step credential, or an approval request to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. WhatsApp support will not need you to post a secret in a group or send it to a supposed friend.
Manage the credential and recovery email later
Use Settings > Account > Two-step verification whenever you need to change the credential or update the recovery email. Review the email whenever you change email providers, lose access to an old inbox, or suspect that someone else can read it. A recovery address is only useful while the account remains secure and accessible to you.
Protect the email account with its own unique password and available sign-in protections. If another person controls that inbox, they may be able to use recovery messages to interfere with your WhatsApp account. Keep the address current, but do not replace it with an account you cannot reliably access.

What to do if you forget your WhatsApp credential
If a recovery email is attached
Use WhatsApp’s in-app recovery option when it appears. The verified email gives WhatsApp a way to help you regain access without relying solely on an SMS or phone connection. Follow the instructions shown in the app and check the correct inbox, including its spam or filtered folders.
After access is restored, immediately choose a new credential you do not reuse elsewhere and confirm that the recovery email is still yours. Then review trusted and linked devices for anything you do not recognize.
If no recovery email is available
The available recovery choices depend on the account’s state and the prompts WhatsApp presents. Do not guess at a password, accept help from an unsolicited “support” contact, or send anyone your registration code. Use only the recovery flow inside the official app and the account-security instructions provided by WhatsApp.
There is no safe shortcut around the credential. A person offering to bypass it, asking for a code, or requesting remote access to your phone is treating your account as a target, not helping you.
If the account has already been taken over
Turning on an additional feature after an intruder has control does not itself restore your account or remove that person. WhatsApp’s account-security guidance says to recover the account first. Once you regain control, enable two-step verification, add or correct the recovery email, and inspect devices and sessions for anything unfamiliar.

Two-step verification, passkeys, and app lock are different controls
These features address different parts of the security chain. Two-step verification protects the registration process with a secret you create. A passkey uses the security capability already built into your device. App lock helps stop someone who is holding an unlocked device from opening WhatsApp. They can be used together rather than treated as substitutes.

Set up a WhatsApp passkey
When the option is available, go to Settings > Account > Passkeys and follow the device’s enrollment prompt. The passkey is tied to the device’s fingerprint, Face ID, or screen-lock code; it is not the same secret as your WhatsApp two-step credential and does not replace the registration code in every situation.
Passkeys are a convenience and a separate layer. Losing access to the enrolled device or its screen lock can affect how you sign in, so keep your normal account-recovery information current. Meta reported that more than one billion people used a WhatsApp passkey in its August 2026 security announcement; that published figure does not change the setup requirements on your particular phone.
Use app lock for local privacy
WhatsApp also offers app lock. On supported phones it can require biometrics, while WhatsApp Web, Windows, or Mac can use a password. This control is aimed at someone who can physically access an already-unlocked device or computer. It does not replace two-step verification, which addresses registration and takeover attempts.
Check for unfamiliar devices and sessions
Two-step verification does not make every existing session disappear. Review your device list regularly, especially after lending your phone, using a public computer, changing phones, or responding to an unexpected security message.

- Review trusted devices. Return to Settings > Account > Two-step verification and inspect the trusted-device information WhatsApp shows there.
- Review linked devices. Open WhatsApp’s Linked devices area to see WhatsApp Web, desktop, and other multi-device connections. These are different from the trusted-device information associated with two-step verification.
- Question every unfamiliar entry. Check the device description and recent activity against computers and phones you actually use. A device you cannot identify should not remain connected.
- Remove anything you do not recognize. Use WhatsApp’s remove or log-out control for the suspicious entry, then change your two-step credential and secure the recovery email if you believe someone accessed the account.
- Investigate the cause. Look for shared computers, an unlocked phone, an unofficial client, or a social-engineering message that may have exposed your registration code or credential.
An unexpected request to approve a passkey, provide a registration code, or reveal the two-step credential is a takeover warning. Decline it, remove unknown sessions, and do not continue the conversation with the requester.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use only the official WhatsApp app
Unofficial WhatsApp clients can contain malware that steals authentication keys and lets attackers impersonate victims. Meta Engineering says Device Verification is designed to detect suspicious connections and block them without requiring an extra action from the user. Installing the official app and keeping it updated reduces the chance that a modified client will expose the account’s authentication material.
- Install WhatsApp through the official app distribution channel for your device.
- Remove modified or unofficial WhatsApp clients before entering a registration code or security credential.
- Do not install an app that promises hidden features if it asks for your WhatsApp authentication data.
- When a security prompt appears unexpectedly, stop and verify which device and app generated it.
A practical protection plan
Do this immediately
- Enable two-step verification from Settings > Account > Two-step verification.
- Create a unique credential in the format your app requests.
- Add and verify a recovery email you control.
- Stop sharing every SMS or voice registration code, even with someone claiming to be a friend or WhatsApp representative.
Do this after setup
- Review trusted-device information and the Linked devices list.
- Remove sessions you cannot identify.
- Set up a passkey at Settings > Account > Passkeys if your device offers it.
- Enable app lock when local access to your phone or computer is a concern.
- Keep the official WhatsApp app installed and avoid unofficial clients.
Repeat these checks
- Revisit the two-step-verification screen after changing phones, email accounts, or the credential.
- Review linked devices after using WhatsApp Web or a shared computer.
- Confirm that your recovery email still works before you need it.
- Treat an unexpected code, passkey approval, or credential request as a possible takeover attempt.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The menu or label looks different
WhatsApp is upgrading the former six-digit PIN to a longer password, so wording and fields can vary by account and rollout. Start from Settings > Account and open the two-step-verification entry. Follow the current prompt instead of looking for a fixed number of boxes.
The app asks for a password instead of a six-digit PIN
That is consistent with WhatsApp’s current password upgrade. Create a longer alphanumeric credential and include special characters if the prompt allows or requests them. Do not substitute your phone’s screen-lock code unless you have intentionally chosen that secret and accept the security risk; a unique WhatsApp credential is safer.

Confirm that you entered the correct address and that you can sign in to it. Check spam, junk, and filtered folders. Do not forward a verification message to anyone asking for it. If the address is no longer accessible, use the account’s in-app options to update it while you still control WhatsApp.
Best Value
A device appears that you do not recognize
Remove the unfamiliar linked session, then change the two-step credential and secure the recovery email. If you also received an unsolicited registration-code or passkey request, treat the event as an active takeover attempt and complete WhatsApp’s account-recovery steps before adding more features.
You lost the phone or its screen lock
A passkey depends on the enrolled device and its fingerprint, Face ID, or screen-lock code. Use the account-recovery method available in WhatsApp, including the verified email where applicable, rather than assuming the passkey can be recreated from memory. Once you regain access on a replacement device, review all trusted and linked devices.
You installed an unofficial client
Remove it and return to the official WhatsApp app before entering any new authentication information. Because unofficial clients may steal authentication keys, change your two-step credential, inspect linked devices, and secure the email account if you used the modified app while signed in.
How the protections fit together
Think of WhatsApp security as several checkpoints rather than one switch. The registration code proves control of the phone number. Two-step verification adds a separate secret to make takeover harder. A recovery email provides a route when that secret is forgotten. A passkey uses the device’s local security system for a faster sign-in experience. App lock protects conversations from someone physically using an unlocked device. Device and linked-session reviews limit the damage from computers or clients that should no longer have access.
The strongest practical configuration is therefore layered: use the official app, enable two-step verification with a unique credential, verify a secure recovery email, add a passkey if appropriate for your device, enable app lock where local privacy matters, and remove unfamiliar sessions promptly. No layer excuses sharing a registration code or approving an unexpected request.
