How to Enable Two-Step Verification on Roblox—and What Replaced the Account PIN

To protect a Roblox login, sign in, open Settings > Security, choose a two-step verification (2SV) method, and complete the prompts. Roblox requires a verified email address before 2SV can be enabled. The old Parent PIN is no longer the current parental-control system: Roblox now uses linked parent-privilege accounts. For protection of your own sign-in, use 2SV rather than looking for a new account PIN.

What you can enable on a Roblox account

Roblox’s current account-security control is called 2-Step Verification (2SV). It adds a second check after a password sign-in. Roblox lets you select one 2SV method at a time:

• Email verification codes
• Codes from an authenticator app
• A security key, including a physical key or a biometric method managed by compatible device hardware

In some sign-ins, Roblox can also ask an already logged-in mobile device to approve or deny the attempt. That approval prompt is a separate login challenge, not an additional 2SV method you select in the settings.

Roblox recommends authenticator-app 2SV. The best choice depends on which devices you have and where you can reliably receive a challenge. Consider whether you can reach your email inbox while traveling, whether you will keep the authenticator device, and whether every device and browser you use supports a security key.

2SV should be understood as protection for particular sign-in flows, not a demand for a code after every possible authentication event. Roblox documents that passkey sign-in bypasses the listed 2SV challenge. Email OTP sign-in also bypasses email 2SV, while Roblox says authenticator-app codes are requested for password sign-in or Email OTP login. This difference matters when you test the setup.

What you need before setup

• A working Roblox account and its password
• A verified email address on that account; Roblox requires verification before 2SV can be turned on
• For authenticator-app 2SV, a compatible authenticator app on a mobile device. Roblox gives Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Duo, and Twilio Authy as examples.
• For security-key 2SV, authenticator-app 2SV must already be enabled. Your browser, operating system, and device must also support the key or biometric security-key function.

Check the email address before starting. If it belongs to an old inbox, a school account, or an address you cannot open on another device, update and verify an address you control first. Do not enable a method and then immediately discard the device or inbox that receives the challenge.

Have a recovery plan ready before switching on protection. Generate backup codes after setup and keep them somewhere private; losing the primary method without another verification method can leave you unable to regain access.

How to turn on 2-Step Verification

1. Sign in to the Roblox account you want to protect.
2. Open Account Settings. On the website, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner. In the mobile app, open the three-dot More menu, then select the gear icon.
3. Select Security.
4. Find the 2SV option you want and turn on its toggle.
5. Complete the method-specific prompts. Roblox may ask you to scan a setup code, enter a code from an inbox or authenticator app, or register a security key.
6. Finish the confirmation screen, then generate recovery codes from Settings > Security > recovery codes.

The labels and prompts can differ by method and device. If the 2SV controls are unavailable, first make sure the account’s email address has been verified. Stay signed in until you have confirmed that recovery codes were created and stored safely.

After activation, make a controlled test: sign out of a browser or use a device where you are not already signed in, then try a password login. This lets you confirm which challenge Roblox presents while you still have access to the email inbox, authenticator app, or key.

Which verification method should you choose?

Only one of these 2SV methods can be selected at a time. A passkey is therefore not a way to make every other login flow demand another code: Roblox specifically documents passkey sign-in as bypassing the listed 2SV challenge.

Email versus an authenticator app

Email avoids installing another app, and it can be convenient if the verified inbox is always available. Its weakness is dependence on that inbox and on the email account’s own security. An authenticator app produces the code on the enrolled device, so it does not require waiting for a message, but losing or replacing that device makes recovery planning essential. Roblox recommends the authenticator option for this reason.

When a security key makes sense

A key is an optional upgrade for someone who already uses authenticator-app 2SV and wants a physical or device-managed credential. It is not needed for email or authenticator protection. Before registering one, verify that the browser, operating system, USB or wireless connection, and biometric hardware you intend to use are supported. Keep a recovery option available even if the key is your preferred daily method.

Set up email 2SV

Email is the simplest option if you consistently control the verified inbox attached to the account.

1. Open Settings > Security and enable the email 2SV toggle.
2. Read the message Roblox sends to the verified address.
3. Enter the code in the Roblox prompt and complete activation.
4. Test a later password sign-in while you still have access to that inbox.

Email 2SV is tied to password sign-in. If you enter an Email OTP or use a passkey instead, Roblox says the normal 2SV challenge is bypassed. Keep the Roblox message and code private; forwarding the message or showing the code to someone else can give that person the second step.

Set up an authenticator app

1. Install a supported authenticator app on your mobile device. Roblox lists Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Duo, and Twilio Authy as examples.
2. In Roblox, open Settings > Security and enable authenticator-app 2SV.
3. Follow the on-screen enrollment prompts, which may require connecting the app to Roblox and entering its current code.
4. Complete the confirmation and save your recovery codes.

When Roblox asks for an authenticator code, use the code currently displayed in the app rather than an older code copied earlier. The code changes, so waiting too long can make a previously visible value unusable.

Roblox says authenticator-app 2SV is its recommended method. It avoids dependence on an email inbox during each password login, but you must keep access to the enrolled device or maintain another recovery method. If you replace the phone, do not erase the old authenticator setup until you have confirmed that the new device or a recovery option works.

Set up security-key 2SV

1. Enable and finish authenticator-app 2SV first; Roblox requires that method before security-key 2SV can be enabled.
2. Return to Settings > Security and turn on the security-key option.
3. When prompted, insert or tap the physical key, or use the supported biometric security-key function on your device.
4. Complete the registration and store recovery codes separately from the key.

A physical FIDO security key is optional, not an account PIN and not a requirement for email or authenticator-app 2SV. A key that works on one browser, operating system, or device may not work identically elsewhere, so check compatibility before relying on it as your only sign-in method. Roblox gives YubiKey 5 as an example of a physical key.

Passkey sign-in bypasses the security-key 2SV challenge described by Roblox. Treat passkeys and registered keys as separate sign-in mechanisms when planning recovery. If you use more than one compatible device, test each one before traveling or removing another sign-in option.

Understand second-device approval prompts

Roblox may ask an already logged-in mobile device to approve or deny a new login. The prompt can show details such as the device, region, IP address, date, and time. Compare those details with what you just attempted.

• If you started the login, approve it only after checking the details.
• If you did not start it, deny the request immediately and change the Roblox password.
• Never approve a request merely because it appeared on your phone; an unexpected prompt can indicate someone else has your password.

An approval prompt is not a reason to share a code with another person. If someone claiming to be a friend, moderator, or employee asks you to approve a request you did not initiate, deny it and secure the account instead.

What happened to the Roblox account PIN?

If by “account PIN” you mean the old Parent PIN, Roblox no longer presents it as the current parental-control system. Roblox says Parent PIN has been replaced by accounts with parent privileges.

How parent privileges work

1. A parent or caregiver uses their own Roblox account.
2. That account is linked to the child’s account.
3. The parent manages parental controls from the parent’s device instead of entering a PIN on the child’s account.

Roblox’s parental-controls FAQ says the parent-privilege account generally must be age-checked as 18 or older in most regions and linked to the child account. The controls available depend on the child’s age. Regional age-check rules can differ, so follow the options shown in your account.

Do not follow older instructions that claim you can create a new Parent PIN. For an extra layer on your own Roblox sign-in, Roblox directs users to two-factor authentication, which is the 2SV setting described above. Parent privileges and 2SV solve different problems: parent privileges manage a child account, while 2SV verifies a person signing in.

Generate and protect Roblox recovery codes

1. Sign in and open Settings > Security.
2. Select recovery codes.
3. Enter the Roblox account password when prompted.
4. Save the displayed codes in a secure, private location that you can reach if your primary verification device is unavailable.

Roblox displays the codes only once. Each code is single-use. If you generate a replacement set, all previously generated codes are deactivated, so update your stored copy immediately. Do not leave a screenshot in a shared photo library or send the list through a public chat.

Roblox says recovery after losing the primary 2SV method requires two different verification methods in the account details. Its listed options include:

• A verified phone number for account holders aged 13 and over
• A passkey for all ages
• Saved backup codes for all ages

Set up distinct recovery options while you are still signed in. If you lose the primary method without enough backup methods, Roblox warns that you may be unable to regain access. A recovery code is not a replacement for a password, and generating a new set does not restore codes that were already used or invalidated.

Fix common verification-code problems

Email code never arrives

1. Check that you are looking at the email address associated with the Roblox account.
2. Search spam, junk, promotions, social, and other filtered folders.
3. Use Resend Code in the Roblox prompt.
4. If the flow is stuck, select Start Over and request a new code.

Roblox says an email 2SV code expires after 15 minutes. A code also stops working if it has already been entered incorrectly for that account, so request a fresh one rather than repeatedly retrying the same value. Make sure you are entering the newest message if several arrived close together.

Authenticator code is rejected

• Open the enrolled authenticator app and enter the code currently shown there.
• Do not use a code from an earlier time window.
• If another configured verification method is available, try that method.
• Contact Roblox Support if the current code and another method both fail.

You lost the primary method

Use a saved recovery code, passkey, or other verification method already recorded in the account details. Roblox’s recovery rules require two different methods in the account details when the primary 2SV method is lost; without sufficient methods, support may not be able to restore access.

The security key is not recognized

Try the key on the supported browser and operating system used during registration, check that it is connected correctly, and confirm that the device supports the required security-key or biometric function. Do not remove the authenticator method until another way to sign in has been tested.

Optional advanced protection: Enhanced Protection

Roblox also offers Enhanced Protection, described as phishing-resistant account protection. It is separate from the standard 2SV choices and has stricter setup and recovery requirements.

• A passkey is required.
• The account must have a verified email.
• You must add a secondary verification option: a verified phone number or backup codes.
• Email OTP and authenticator-app codes are disabled for 2SV challenges under Enhanced Protection.
• Password sign-ins require a passkey or hardware-security-key challenge.

Choose Enhanced Protection only after confirming that you can use the required passkey or hardware key and have the secondary option stored safely. Its phishing resistance does not remove the need for a recovery plan. Because email OTP and authenticator codes are disabled for its challenges, switching to this option can change how you recover from a lost device.
