Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) separately for every gaming account you use. Xbox consoles use the security settings of your Microsoft account, while PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam and Epic Games have their own account-level controls. Start from the platform’s official account page or console settings, choose a method you can reliably access, complete the confirmation code, and save any recovery codes before signing out.

The labels differ—PlayStation calls it 2-Step Verification, Steam calls it Steam Guard, and Microsoft and Epic use Two-Step Verification or Two-Factor Authentication—but each adds a second check after your password. The paths below reflect the English-language support interfaces documented by the platforms as of October 2026; labels and availability can vary by region, account and device generation.

What gaming-account 2FA protects

A password is one factor: something you know. Two-factor authentication adds a second factor, such as a code from an authenticator app, a text message, an email message or an approval prompt. A thief who obtains your password should still be stopped unless they can also satisfy that second check.

2FA is attached to an account identity, not automatically to every game installed on a console. For example, enabling two-step verification on the Microsoft account used by Xbox protects that Microsoft sign-in. It does not automatically enable 2FA on a separate Epic Games account, Nintendo Account or Steam account that you also use on the same console or PC. Enable the feature on each account that can sign in independently.

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Prepare before switching 2FA on

  • Identify every account: list your PlayStation Network, Microsoft/Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, Epic Games and any other publisher accounts used for purchases, cloud saves or competitive play.
  • Keep a usable recovery channel: verify that you can open the recovery email account and that any listed phone number still receives messages.
  • Install an authenticator app if you plan to use one: it must be on a device you control and can unlock when signing in.
  • Stay signed in while setting up: some services display a QR code or ask for a code immediately after you choose a method.
  • Record recovery information: save backup codes where you can reach them if your phone is lost, replaced or reset. Do not store them in a public note or share them in chat.
  • Use official settings: type the service’s known address yourself or open account settings from the console. Do not follow an unsolicited “security verification” link.

Quick comparison of the major gaming services

Service Feature name Where to start Methods documented by the service Important qualification
PlayStation Network (PS5/PS4) 2-Step Verification Account Management > Security, or console Settings Authenticator app or text message Sony tells users to record backup codes.
Xbox Microsoft account two-step verification Microsoft account Security > Manage how I sign in Email, phone or authenticator app SMS availability for personal accounts may change; Xbox 360 can require an app password.
Nintendo Account 2-Step Verification Nintendo Account settings QR-code setup with a smart-device app; a passkey can confirm identity if already enabled Follow the current prompts shown for your account.
Steam Steam Guard Steam account security settings Steam Mobile app or contact email The extra authorization is requested for logins from an unrecognized computer.
Epic Games (including Fortnite) Two-Factor Authentication Epic account Password and security Epic Authenticator, third-party authenticator app, email or SMS Some regional phone numbers are not supported; multiple methods can be enabled and one selected as primary.

Enable 2-step verification on PlayStation (PS5 and PS4)

Use Account Management in a browser

  1. Sign in to your PlayStation account’s Account Management page.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Find 2-Step Verification Status and choose Edit.
  4. Select Authenticator App or Text Message.
  5. If you selected an authenticator app, scan the displayed setup code in the app and enter the generated code. If you selected text message, enter the code sent to your registered phone.
  6. Choose Activate after the code is accepted.
  7. Record the displayed Backup Codes. Keep them private and accessible without relying on the same phone used for the authenticator.

Use a PS5

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Users and Accounts, then Security.
  3. Choose 2-Step Verification.
  4. Select an authenticator app or text message and complete the code prompt.
  5. Save the backup codes shown after activation.

Use a PS4

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Account Management > Account Information > Security.
  3. Choose 2-Step Verification, select your method and enter the verification code.
  4. Confirm activation and record the backup codes.

Sony also documents passkeys as another sign-in approach. The 2-Step Verification setup flow above specifically uses an authenticator app or SMS, so follow the options actually displayed for your account.

Enable two-step verification for Xbox through a Microsoft account

There is no separate console-wide Xbox 2FA switch that secures every gaming identity. Xbox sign-in uses the Microsoft account associated with the console.

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account Security page.
  2. Choose Manage how I sign in.
  3. Under Additional security, find Two-step verification and select Turn on.
  4. Follow the prompts to add or confirm an email address, phone number or authenticator app.
  5. Complete the test security code and finish activation.

When you sign in on a device that is not trusted, Microsoft can send the code to an email address, phone or authenticator app registered on the account. Add a method that you can still access if your primary phone is unavailable.

Microsoft SMS and older Xbox hardware limitations

Microsoft says SMS is being phased out as an authentication and recovery method for personal Microsoft accounts, so the choices shown to you may change. An authenticator app or reachable email is a more durable option when available.

Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Microsoft also states that Xbox 360 cannot use the regular security-code flow. After two-step verification is enabled, that older console may require an app password generated for the Microsoft account. This limitation should not be generalized to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

Enable 2-step verification on a Nintendo Account

  1. Sign in to your Nintendo Account and open the account settings.
  2. Choose the 2-Step Verification setup option.
  3. Use a smart-device authenticator app to scan the QR code displayed on the Nintendo Account screen.
  4. Enter the code generated by the app when Nintendo asks you to confirm the setup.
  5. Complete the prompts and verify that 2-step verification is shown as enabled in account settings.

Nintendo’s account flow notes that a passkey can be used to confirm your identity during setup if passkey authentication is already enabled. The exact confirmation screen can differ by account, so use the method presented after you open the current Nintendo Account settings.

Set up Steam Guard

Steam calls its second sign-in layer Steam Guard. Steam describes it as an additional level of security and uses it when a login comes from an unrecognized computer. Depending on your settings, Steam sends the code through the contact email address or the Steam Mobile app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to Steam and open your account’s security settings.
  2. Find the Steam Guard section and choose the option to enable it.
  3. Select the available delivery method, such as the Steam Mobile app or contact email.
  4. Enter the code Steam sends or displays.
  5. Finish the confirmation and keep access to the selected email account or mobile app.

If you suspect that your Steam account is already compromised

  1. Open Authorized Devices in Steam’s security controls.
  2. Use Sign out everywhere for sessions or devices you do not recognize.
  3. Change the Steam password from the official account page.
  4. Review the security of the email account and any accounts associated with Steam, then change those passwords if necessary.

Enabling Steam Guard does not replace reviewing active sessions. An unfamiliar authorized device can remain a risk until you revoke it.

Enable 2FA for Epic Games and Fortnite

Turn on a method

  1. Sign in to your Epic Games account.
  2. Open Password and security.
  3. Find Two-Factor Authentication and choose Set up for the method you want.
  4. Complete the code or approval prompt that Epic displays.
  5. Check that the account confirms the method is active. Epic’s documented flow includes a confirmation email.

Choose among Epic’s methods

  • Epic Authenticator: number-match prompts in the Epic Games app or Epic Games Store app.
  • Third-party authenticator app: time-based codes generated by an authenticator application.
  • Email authentication: a code delivered to the email address on the Epic account.
  • SMS authentication: a code sent to a registered phone number.

Some regional phone numbers are not supported for Epic SMS verification. If Epic reports that your number is unavailable, choose an authenticator or email method that you can reliably use instead.

Set a preferred method when several are enabled

Epic allows multiple 2FA methods and lets you select a preferred primary method. Keep at least one additional recovery route only if you can secure it; an abandoned email inbox or old phone number is not useful protection.

Why Fortnite players should enable it

Epic states that 2FA is required for some Epic Games Store free-game claims, Fortnite gifting and Fortnite competitive events. These requirements apply to the Epic account behind Fortnite, not merely to the console on which you play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the right verification method

When a service offers more than one method, decide based on access and recovery rather than convenience alone.

Method Advantages Risks and checks
Authenticator app Generates codes without depending on a text-message network and is available on several of the services above. You must keep the device or account containing the authenticator accessible; plan how to recover if the phone is lost.
Email code Works on a device with browser access and does not require cellular service. If the gaming account and recovery email share the same password or are compromised together, the second factor is weakened. Secure the email account separately.
SMS code Simple to use when the registered number has service. Numbers can change, messages can be delayed, regional support differs, and Microsoft says SMS availability for personal accounts is changing.
Number-match or app approval Can be faster than typing a code and helps prevent mistyping. It depends on the provider’s mobile app and notifications working on a device you control.
Passkey Can confirm identity without typing a one-time code when the account and device support it. Availability and setup differ by service; it is an additional sign-in approach, not the same setup flow described for every 2FA feature.

Use an authenticator app when you can maintain access to it and the service supports it. Otherwise, a well-protected email account is generally preferable to an obsolete phone number. Treat SMS as a convenience whose availability and reliability can vary.

Protect linked accounts and recovery email

Epic specifically notes that linked Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Facebook and Google accounts can be used to access an Epic account. A strong Epic password and 2FA are not enough if an attacker can enter one of those linked accounts. Enable the strongest available sign-in protection on each linked identity and secure the email address used for recovery.

The same principle applies to other platforms: a recovery inbox, phone number or connected identity is part of the sign-in chain. Use unique passwords, keep recovery details current and remove accounts or numbers you no longer control.

Recovery checklist after activation

  • Complete at least one real sign-in or test prompt so you know the method works before you need it.
  • Confirm the account settings page shows the method as active.
  • Store PlayStation backup codes in a private location separate from your phone.
  • Check that your recovery email can receive messages and is protected with its own strong password and 2FA where available.
  • Update a phone number when you change carriers or numbers; do not leave an old number attached.
  • For Steam, inspect Authorized Devices and revoke unfamiliar sessions.
  • For Microsoft, keep an accessible non-SMS method because SMS options may be reduced over time.
  • For an Xbox 360, create and use an app password if Microsoft’s sign-in flow requires it after two-step verification is enabled.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

The code is rejected

  • Check that the code belongs to the account you are currently editing.
  • For an authenticator app, use the newest displayed code; time drift on the phone can invalidate a time-based code.
  • For email or SMS, request one new code and enter only that latest message.
  • Return to the official account page rather than using a code request from an unsolicited message.

You lost the phone or authenticator device

Use the service’s backup code or another already registered method. PlayStation explicitly provides backup codes for this situation. If no recovery method works, use the provider’s official account-recovery process; do not give one-time codes to someone claiming to be support.

Your phone number is unsupported

Epic documents regional SMS-number limitations. Select Epic Authenticator, a third-party authenticator app or email instead. On Microsoft, SMS options for personal accounts may also change as the service phases them out.

A console still asks for a password after 2FA is enabled

Check whether the device is an older exception. Microsoft identifies Xbox 360 as unable to use the normal security-code flow and says an app password may be required. Do not apply that workaround automatically to newer Xbox consoles.

You enabled 2FA but another game account remains unprotected

Review the account identity shown in that game’s sign-in screen. A Microsoft account, Epic account, Nintendo Account, PlayStation Network account and Steam account are separate security domains even when they are linked or used on one console. Repeat setup in the unprotected service’s own account settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What 2FA does not do

2FA reduces the value of a stolen password, but it does not make phishing safe, recover deleted game items or protect a compromised email account automatically. Never approve an unexpected sign-in prompt, reveal a one-time code to another person or reuse the gaming password elsewhere. If you suspect compromise, revoke unfamiliar sessions, change the password and secure linked and recovery accounts before continuing to play.
